Game On! Newcastle v Everton

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
Tonight it’s the visit of Everton we’re covering, and you can catch and contribute to all the immediate action and reaction here in this very article.

A second home game in succession will leave United fans hopeful of a second win in succession against a strong Everton side who have their eyes on a late run at the Champions League spaces.

However, as I said in my match preview (online here, a win for United would close the gap on Everton which could catapult us into contention for a late charge at that final Europa League space. Not that the club would find it worthwhile but still…

If you’ve used the link in the last paragraph to have a nosey at the match preview then good on you. If you haven’t, do so, because it’s full of injury news for both sides, some waffle about the season to date, a look at the history of the fixture and some stats and facts thrown in for good measure.

Our game is once again not being shown live here in the UK. For some reason the media are preoccupied with two teams from Manchester who also go head-to-head this evening. However the good news is that our friends overseas are broadcasting the game so hopefully picking up a stream shouldn’t be too much of an issue and those unable to go to the game in person can still watch it. There are usually some links posted in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will be available roughly one hour prior to kick-off and is usually posted in the comments before we can get it published fully so if you’re not twitterised and can’t get it off there take a look below. We will of course update it the site as soon as possible.

That neatly wraps it up and covers all my bases so now it’s up to you guys and girls to dissect the team news, the match and anything that may come to pass as and when it happens. I’m working so have fun.

Howay the lads!

  1. I think the key for Pardew is ensuring there is an actual decent game plan at home to break the “lesser” teams down-after all that is where the majority of “enjoyment” and goals come from for most sides.

We have a pretty good away record-I think we have won seven away which is as many as Chelski and those games suit our counter attacking style. But at home people don’t want to see counter attacking (unless of course we’re already a few goals up) plus it usually suits the opposition. We have pace and power on the break but now we need some real nous and a consistent performer who can help us unlock teams at home. And someone to sort out our woeful set pieces ffs. Some teams have scored 15 or so goals from set pieces. How many do we have, one or two?

  2. Completely agree on the home game plan.
On the whole we have done well against teams we have been expected to struggle against (shitting myself for the Liverpool game though…).
It’s definitely been the weak spot this year.

  3. I think we’ll buy or loan a fairly decent striker in the summer. Ashley won’t spend much, but surely he’ll do the bare minimum to ensure we stay in the league – and I don’t think he wants a scare like last year. Not when he’s so close to actually being in the position to make a profit on us 😯

      (Quote)

  4. I just can’t see who would bother coming to us on loan if they were that good. Remy was a bit of a unique case, nobody going down this year has anyone of his class. So then it comes to good players for the top sides who aren’t getting games-maybe hernandes?

Lukaku i imagine will want to move permanently, or stay at chelsea. We need to buy someone decent and I would say to the tune of 15 ish mil to ensure quality. then another 15mil for a creative centre/attacking mid. There’s 20mil of profit for Ashley to then do what he likes with. Ideally we’d also get a real winger and back up for Debuchy but I guess we won’t go for either. I’d like to see Haidara at right back more often than Mbiwa if we aren’t going to get a dedicated right back.

      (Quote)

  5. Newkie – I’d rather see Haidara at left back mate. He’s a real leftie and they’re pretty rare. And @376 – Hatem’s the man.

      (Quote)

  6. Georgio-Haidara would probably be my first choice left back as well for now, but basically what I’m after is a full back at right back, any of them, rather than M’biwa. I know he is on a decent wedge and wants to play but I don’t think it’s doing him any favours playing there.

      (Quote)

  7. Re Benny, I want him in the team but I think he is too selfish to fulfill the proper playmaker role. I’d rather see him on the wing in 4-3-3 or as a second striker. Not sure his long range passing his up to the job as a playmaker and would rather having him running at people than trying to pick out their runs from further back.

      (Quote)

  8. so Everton manager has been told he will be given 20 mil in summer to buy up to 3/4 players 🙄 ime guessing Luka will be out of his range then

      (Quote)

  9. Newkie – seems to me he’s changing his game. He’s not trying to dribble through as often as he used to and his range of passing and vision is very good. Watched the Norwich game and he played a few beautiful through balls from deep. He’s creating chances far more than he used to. He needs an arm round him and a confidence boost like “here son you’re in for the rest of the season.” What’s to lose. Agree about Mbiwa though he just cannot play there. I like him but like others he’s been messed around so much. Against Everton (a) at 3-0 down Pardew took off him and Hatem and sent them to the naughty step for a long long time. They were far from the worst offenders but it’s ruined their season. **** management.

      (Quote)

  10. Georgio
Yep – nothing to lose from doing that (except maybe dropping a whole 1 PL place) but could be shitloads to gain. A confident Cisse and HBA, coupled with a few signings would really change our feelings going into next season.

      (Quote)

  11. Where do we think Remy will be off to in the summer?
I don’t think he’s actually good enough for a CL or CL chasing team.
I think the most he’d get are Everton. Spurs/Arsenal really need to set their sights higher if they are looking for guaranteed top 4 or a title challenge.
    So somewhere else in Europe?
Looks like QPR aren’t going up so he’ll definitely be on the market.

      (Quote)

  12. Ice-that’s unless Moyes comes in with another stupid bid and gifts them a load more cash. Fellani for 27.5 mil so maybe they will give 80 mil for Baines? 😆

Georgio-I agree, he did pick out some lovely passes in that game and recently he made Cisse’s goal and but for a woeful finish from Anita, should have yet another assist. He is not the greedy/lazy one trick pony many see him to be. I still think we need another playmaker though, Benny is someone who can pull off some magic and win us matches on his own but it’s not good for him to have to shoulder the burden of creating everything himself. Need someone else to take charge of that, preferably someone who will last 90 minutes at it as Cabs and Benny always tired after 60/70 if they started. I’d like someone in the centre with a bit more creativity and better set piece skill than cabaye-they don’t have to tackle or track as much-leave that entirely to Tiote because he is being asked to create chances or shoot and he is completely wasted at doing it.

Agree we should defo be giving Benny more playing time. I wanted to give De Jong til the end of the season to see if he would be worthwhile but he doesn’t even seem hungry for it and he’s playing for a move-if we aren’t going to buy him as seems likely get Benny on.

      (Quote)

  13. Solano-Remy is better than Podolski or Giroud for my money, but they would need to offload one surely because they cant play them all. I think Arsenal should really be aiming higher too, if they had gotten Suarez for the 40-45 mil in the summer instead of Ozil they would have won the league I reckon, or at least still be in a good shout of winning it.

Spurs used to be cautious with their money but after 27 mil on Soldado, 17 mil for Remy would be a steal surely.

Alan well finish 8th or 9th regardless of tomorrow, Southampton are far weaker defensively than they are going forward. Stop worrying so much about defending and try to hurt the opposition ffs

  15. Think Southampton will have to much movement for us sadly!

By the way my son is at Uni in Sheffield and is trying to raise some cash for charity by doing a sponsored hitchhike across Europe, anyone who would like to donate even a pound will realise that helping those less fortunate than ourselves not only helps raise them from the depths of despair but also raises your own personal mojo; this in turn makes you more likely to be successful in life and extremely attractive to the opposite sex…. (honest).

    Every little helps

    Thanks in advance

  16. I agree with you Steve I think Southampton will win tomorrow. I doubt our midfield will create enough chances and Pardew will make the team sit deep and it’s only a matter of time till we concede a goal then more will follow. LDJ isn’t making an impact and Cisse’s to unpredictable but most likely to miss the goal if he gets a chance. We need to strengthen in the summer and we are safe until then so Ashley doesn’t give to tits about weather we win or lose.

      (Quote)

  17. CC – totally agree with you mate, and love the look of that line up.
What’s Pardew got to loose by dropping Anita or De Jong?, neither have brought much if anything in the last 3 games.
I also think that Haidara would add a bit of natural width and might even be able to deliver a cross into the box 😯

It won’t happen but it bloody should.
It’s all well and good saying we need to strengthen in the summer (and we do) but if you aren’t playing the likes of Haidara, Marv and Benny – then how do you know how much you need to strengthen?.

I also heard that Haidara is on a Jonas contract by the way, but I don’t know the terms of it. I believe it’s either on so many appearances he gets a pay rise or the club we bought him from gets a bonus payment.

  18. Quote from Pardew “Mike like his teams to be attacking just like me”. This bloke is such a gobshite. How many teams does Mike have? How much does he know about football? Just like ‘midfield clogger negative coach’ me. Can’t stand him. And he’ll produce an entirely predictable defeat tomorrow.

      (Quote)

  19. CC, I like that line up mate ,says goals to me, as you say take it to them and stop worrying about them especially at home like. But will he go with a line up like that, will he hell 🙁

      (Quote)

  20. Georgio@393, Agree mate ,there is nothing that suggest to me that Pards sets us up to attack. Every game is pretty much a carbon copy of the last with the odd exception. We start off trying to get an early lead that we can then sit back on all game with a few late counters. If we can’t snatch the lead in the first 10/15 mins we then sit back all bloody game and try a few wonder subs in the last 15 mins when we’re likely losing by then, you can time the subs and the names almost to the second it’s so predictable . I don’t see Pards as a proactive manager at all I’m afraid, for me he often looks like a rabbit caught in headlights when we’re under the cosh. If Mike likes attacking footie and I’m sure he does , he needs to employ a more forward thinking modern coach imo. Pards has players with pace, creativity and ability to scare/run at the opposition at his disposal but fails too often to utilise them and I don’t understand why Mike doesn’t see that, the rest of us do.

      (Quote)

  21. Kim – most people on here would pick a better team than Pardew! Imagine how Benny, Marv, Haidara, Mbiwa must feel seeing Obertan, Shola, De Jong getting game time year after year. We have enough good players to have a decent team thanks to Graham Carr. When Pards gets his pick of who to buy it’s Obertan, Elliott and De Jong and he’d like Bent,Tomkins etc
The time is passing, years flowing by with him in charge. Makes me really angry 😥

      (Quote)

  22. Georgio – that’ll be why Mike is first in his seat EVERY home game. The bloke can’t wait to watch his beloved NUFC rip teams apart with their attacking flair and he’s first with the Ola’s when we start showboating.

What a crock of ****!. But what’s most worrying is that I think he genuinely believes it. I don’t think it’s bullshit because I honestly think he believes every word he said.

      (Quote)

  23. Sharples@398…I don’t think Inter are the appeal that they once were. Both the Milan sides are struggling at the moment, I reckon there could be a good chance of Gomis coming to the toon, of course we need to hoy the money at him, cos he knows as a Bosmann he can demand more.

Regarding Cashley not spending the “Sky footy money” as such. We are not the only club who will be receiving a huge windfall from Sky, in fact every club is receiving big bucks, and will, most probably, spend a larger portion of it. Whereas spending money doesn’t always guarantee success, if we DON’T spend, then we slip even further back. We have to spend money just to maintain the status quo. 1-2 good payers with a couple of good loanees every year is the way to go if you ask me.

  24. What a strange way Pardew has with him. “when you have a small team it’s going to have an effect’ says Alan. And “Put on top my personality – which we all know is a little bit of a winning mentality – and I want to make sure we want to win.” A small team? A little bit of a winning mentality? It sounds pathetic really.

      (Quote)

  25. The big drawback with Gomis being on a free is wages but more importantly his bloody agents and hangers on, the French lads seem to have as many as the African lads now 🙄

      (Quote)

  26. G2 ,He talks total bollocks for me mate, the **** he comes out with often leaves me baffled and bewildered tbh.

      (Quote)

  27. Pardew one of the most defensive managers I know. Attacking mentality since when ? Most of his games he wins by the odd goal and we are lucky not to lose because either there all over us or it was 50/50 in most cases. He speaks utter rubbish. Ashley will spend big in the summer, sounds like we tried but they wanted to much money. Its a scam to make you by a season ticket so Ashley can **** on your cornflakes again .

      (Quote)

  28. On Gomis don’t know a lot about him,on reading up on him tends to play when “he”fancys it,is also know to cause bother in the dressing room a number of times, also top PL clubs have looked at him and said no thanks, but would suit a middle of the lge. club, that’s all I really found about him

      (Quote)

  29. Having trouble coming on here lately, but I’ve finally gotten through again. Yes it all sounds like more bollocks from Alan. He probably has no clue as to how much Ashley will spend this summer. And as for the rest of it? Small team? A little it of a winning mentality? Give over Alan. It’s making you sound even more pathetic than usual.

      (Quote)

  30. Is Benny still completely out of shape? So he won’t be starting then I suppose. Can we pot one before we start sitting back and defending? It seems unlikely. We will lose the possession game early on I would think and Southampton will break us down eventually. No Krul, no Debuchy, no Remy. Weak on the flanks, and at fullback. It doesn’t sound promising.

      (Quote)

  31. It will be Gomis on a free for us this summer. And a nice cheap young striker from somewhere. Then we’ll make a derisory bid for Grenier and possibly Cabella as well at the end of the window with the rotor turning on the helicopter.

      (Quote)

  32. No, I’m serious Kimtoon lass. We will try to outspend ManU this summer but fall slightly short. I would say they will outspend us by about 50 to 1. So if they spend 200M we’ll be in there for 4 M and have very balanced books indeed. Yes, it’s looking very good balanced books wise. 😆

      (Quote)

  33. So Mike is providing some cash for Pardew in the Summer transfer window.
    It wont be very much.
Pards is looking at player contracts next month and there will be a few out of contract players moved on.
Nevertheless I expect Gosling to be given a new contract to replace Cabaye and Shola a new contract to replace Remy.
A couple of youngsters may get promoted to the bench.
Total cost – signing on fees for Gosling and Shola.
    Happy days—— for Ashley.

      (Quote)

  34. G2 Ashley needs to prove himself in the summer and get several players over the line before I believe it. Talk is cheap where Mr Pardews concerned.

      (Quote)

  35. Thing is we get this bull **** every window , the old Mike is ready to back me routine and we need some strikers and what have you ,along with Mike knows we’re a bit short on numbers and we’ll be looking to bring bodies in. Which is quickly followed by, well we tried very hard but just couldn’t quite get them over the line so we go with what we got which I’m happy with and we’ll revisit it next window bla bla bla, meh. 🙄 Nah I’m not swallowing anymore of that bollocks, prove me wrong and Iwill happily eat humble pie, the ovens already on. 😉

      (Quote)

  36. Our lot have no option this year, they MUST invest or they will be in for a turbulent season next season. As always we’ll wait to see how things go before panic buying in January. Pathetic really.

      (Quote)

  37. Dave , I’m sick of hearing the same **** every window now, doesn’t Pards realise Jabba is making him look a prize *** over and over again. The one time he splashed the cash properly was when his asset was in peril jan before last .I don’t consider £9m on Cisse big money really not in todays transfer market .

      (Quote)

  38. what a sleaze-ball Pardew is. We like to have teams on the back foot? do we??
Mike likes an attacking team, just like me..really, so why sell our best attacking midfielder?

I hope Pardew doesnt talk **** all season and into the Summer with more bullshit promises of players ‘already identified’ etc. as we’ll sign nobody of any worth but we will certainly sell some of our best players. Just like our play. two steps back one step forward. 🙄

      (Quote)

  39. Kim – re Gomis. I think I’d rather we paid his cling ons a kings ransom that BMG £8m for De Jong to be honest. I hate the idea of agents profiting in such a way, but at least we’d end up with a CF who can score goals. £8m could get us a decent CF really and I’d even rather try and get Jordan Rhodes from Bburn for that money than waste it on De Jong.

Kim – re Benny, if Rob Lee says he should be playing then that’s good enough for me!. I wish he was at Newcastle in some capacity!, the blokes a legend.

      (Quote)

  40. Sharpy, Agree, loved him too mate. His point about Ginola not always doing his bit like they find with Benny was interesting too, he said they let it go cause he could win a game much like Benny can . Wonder how many of the squad feel that way about Hatem 😕

      (Quote)

  41. KIM think there are a few players that just don’t get with Benny even somethat won’t even pass to him on the pitch, tiote for one, does not bode well now does it

      (Quote)

  42. Ice, nope mate it don’t. Lots of issues at the club at the moment, one way or another it all needs sorting. Reckon Hatem will be away come summer anyway.

      (Quote)

  43. Any other team outside of the top 6 in the EPL would find a place for HBA in there team. It’s just wor lot who don’t seem to get it 😕

Maybe the De Jong foul really did knack him, though having said that he had seemed to have shown a full recovery before he seemed to go off the ropes a bit after his series of niggly hamstring injuries and the onset of his Dickmans pies diet. ? Maybe Ben Arfa has peaked, and this is as good as it gets ?
