Siem signs on!

A better de Jong?
A better de Jong?
I had almost finished writing an article late last night when news broke which meant I had to pretty much bin the whole thing.

Never mind. I’ve had a nice couple of weeks in Turkey enjoying the culture (Efes, Raki, Quad Bikes etc) so don’t mind starting again.

Anyway the subject of the planned article was that basically that during all the time I’ve been away stationed in some mountains somewhere not too far from Syria, in a land forgotten by the internet, that nothing has changed.

Less than 12 hours after my return, and no more than five minutes before publishing a fresh article which you’ve no doubt been waiting for, there has been a change and we’ve managed to sign former Ajax captain Siem de Jong.

The 25-year-old has signed a six-year contract with the club for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £6m-£7.5m – a reduction on the £15 million Ajax were looking for last summer, presumably as the Dutch club fear losing him for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

Born in Switzerland to Dutch parents, de Jong has represented Holland at every level and currently has six full international caps with two goals to his name. During is time at Ajax he racked up 244 appearances in all competitions over seven seasons, scoring 78 goals operating mainly as an attacking midfielder with occasional stints as a striker when required. Here is a video of him in action.

The lad has shown class in the Dutch league but only time will tell if he can replicate that in what is a much tougher league. Maybe I’m just being overly cautious after the failed loan spell his brother Luuk had with us last season? I don’t know. I’d be ecstatic if it worked out though.

This is now our third summer signing following the arrivals of Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez earlier on the summer, but more still needs to be done if we are to have a squad anywhere near ready for the new season which is now approximately seven weeks away.

Maybe this is just the start of that process?

Can’t believe the world cup is almost over. Its going to be so strange. Though our first pre season game is on Tuesday i think so we haven’t that long to wait.

and in World Cup Football news… it has been announced that Germany will loan their World Cup trophy to Greece! 😆

  14. Good to have a new man. Now we just need a couple of defenders, a couple of forwards and a wide player (and no I don’t mean richie) or two and we can really compete for that 10th spot 😆

      (Quote)

  15. Well done Lee Charnley … again!.

Fantastic signing of a player who clearly wants to be at NUFC.

Hands up again, I thought Cabella was going to rumble on the whole window until we failed to sign him and the ‘we tried’ excuses came out again.

In Carr we trust …. In Chanaz we trust 😛

Now go get 2 centre forwards please 😉

      (Quote)

  16. The Cabella & Stevo D Young signing does hint at a little ambition being shown by the regime… this will fly in the face of all the neggars on here. 😛 However, I am sure they will find a way to put a negative spin on it.

“The regime should have bought Cabella last transfer window; all they are trying to do now is sell season tickets” 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Panic buys Aussie get it right!! That fat cockney finally spent some of the Carroll money.

Still need 14 more players to even have the same quality as last seasons squad of *****.

      (Quote)

  18. I have a feeling that if we have a bad run this season coming, Pardew will be gone.. The only reason he survived last season is because the regime did not back him in the transfer market and they cut him some slack! The way we are going at the moment with the players we are bringing in (with more to come hopefully), Pardew will have no excuses. It will be crunch time for him. 😕

  19. Anyway I’m of back to sleep. I might dream of supporting a club that doesn’t have a Star Wars character as the owner. 😎

    p.s tw@t!!

Whey first working day of the week, taking wor lass to Phys, if we haven’t signed anyone by the time I get back there’ll be hell on! 👿

  27. Morning campers. Well a very enjoyable world cup over apart from the non appearance by England of course. Was hoping the Argies would win (nothing to do with drawing them in our office sweepstake) but alas it was not meant to be. Good to hear the Toon are making progress with much needed signings although not impressed we are losing both Debuchy and Mwiba. Debuchy going was always going to happen but Mapou is a case of gross mis management by that ‘genius’ of a manager we have. I think Mapou had very good potential and he played well alongside Willo. The way he was treated when Collo came back was disgraceful. Having read the comments I can see many are willing to give Pardew another chance this season. Well I’m afraid I can’t wipe the slate clean. Hope to god that by some miracle he manages to get the best out of these new signings but with his record I’m not convinced.Good to know for definite we are not interested in the cups so hopefully the fans will stay at home and not bother spending their hard earned. If we have nothing to look forward to except mid table mediocrity hopefully Pardew has studied teams during the world cup and learnt some new tactics so at least it is entertaining to watch. Would be happy with Ba or Remy if we could pull either off even if it’s just another loan.

      (Quote)

  28. Just read this on the UTD111 site 😆 😆 😆

Nevertheless – let’s just pause here and say “well done” to Lee Charnley and his team at Newcastle United who have managed to shake off the transfer doldrums of the Kinnear period and get some good signings over Alan Pardew’s imaginary “Line”.

Well done Lee! That should help sell some season tickets!

      (Quote)

  29. No they are not panic signings but lets not kid ourselves they know without fresh faces we’d really be at risk of relegation this season. It won’t do season tickets sales any harm either I would imagine. If he sees us as a business rather than a football club then he’ll be aware he has to keep the customer happy. He is also back dating his ex wife and maybe he’s a happier bunny right now 😕 what ever, I’m just pleased to see new faces in but we still need more imo. Credit to Charney&co, good job so far, but still need that striker of quality and RB in place.

De Telegraaf report #Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat close to a move to #Newcastle United. €6 million fee #NUFC

      (Quote)

  31. Kim – Ashleys ex wife stung him for £50m last time round, so maybe this new found spending spree is his way of making sure she doesn’t get her hands on any more 😛 😆

Re Lacazette – £16m seems alot like. If we can get Rivière in for the reported £4.7m then that would be a decent buy. I reckon Ba or Remy would cost around £8m and if we could get either of those in I think that would be one hell of a transfer window.

Cabella, Rivière and Janmaat in the same week would be outstanding.

How are we doing with our English/Homegrown quota though?!

      (Quote)

  32. Sharpy , Aye she did, fair play to her too, I’d want that living with him .

Nice if we could get Janmaat in this week, not sure about Riviere really mate, is he that good ❓ also don’t want an young overseas player holding back our young lads chances . Desperately need that quality striker in though .

      (Quote)

  33. Kim – who would you want for that quality striker? I haven’t seen enough of Lacazette to even know if he hints at being one and at £16m???? Maybe its euros. If we were to go that far I’d go the extra and get Bony or Lukaku in.

      (Quote)

  34. Kim – you’d settle for £50m?! 😕 😕 😆

If Rivière cost more I won’t want him but at that price it’s fairly low risk really and we lost 3 CFs last season. I don’t think he’ll get in the way of the Adams, I think Armaz should go out on loan for the season and I’d loan Campbell to a Championship side til Jan then bring him back. I’m not sure he’s ready yet and I don’t think his stint at St Mirren really progressed him much – if at all.
Rivière would get around 10 goals per season I reckon, but I think we still need a 15 goals plus CF as well.

      (Quote)

  35. Sharpy17 I’m actually shocked that Newcastle signed Carbella “shocked”. I thought Ashley wasn’t willing to spend that much, so hands up I was wrong. However, if we could get Ba and Remy back I would be extremely excited for the next season.

      (Quote)

  36. Cabella seems like a bit of a character.

Could do with strikers to score the chances him and De Jong will create… 🙂

      (Quote)

  37. TERRY

Good of you to hold your hands up.

If we get a couple more players then I have a feeling there will be fans almost expecting us to get top 6. That will be really tough but would be nice to target it!

We’re really just one striker away from having the most complete squad we’ve had for years. Last summer I felt we were missing LDJ/Gomis and after he arrived we were bloody missing Cabaye.

      (Quote)

  38. Delighted with the business thus far; De Jong, Cabella and Janmaat are superb signings, Ive even started to think positively about Colbacks arrival which if nothing else gives us natural balance in midfield and with Portos record of unearthing gems their disapointment at missing out on Perez is encouraging.

Bring back Remy or Ba and roll on next season

      (Quote)

  39. TDS – see you’re at the LDJ again 😆 How about just big guy? Who woud you go for at CF? Lacazette seems a lot at 16m

      (Quote)

  40. GEORGIO

True…but most of us last summer were thinking of one of those two coming in…

I’d love Lukaku and think we would be an excellent move for him unless a top CL club wants him as their number 9. Bony too, but we’ve seen some players star in their first season and then struggle.

Honestly…I don’t really care that much who and I certainly don’t care how much. It’s always a bit of a gamble signing players…so I just care that they get suitable guys in and then Pardew has a chance to turn them into a team.

I know some of you guys watch lots of European football and trawl YouTube for videos of players we’re linked to. Not my areas of expertise…I don’t ever recall seeing SDJ or Cabella play…

      (Quote)

  41. Aussie@1029 😯 rather you than me, I doubt the lad who “got caught” this morning will be doing it again…that’s if he even runs again. 😕

Cabella’s a good signing, likes to go over a little easy but that seems to be the norm these days. Grenier would have been my prefered option but I’m canny happy like.
Janmaat and a couple of strikers and a good solid CB and I’ll be owa the moon…not asking too much is it? 😉

      (Quote)

  42. Ba, Lukaku, Lacazette, Remy – if we can get any of these, or players of similar quality, that would be a good squad, after a strong summer business. Exactly who depends on so many factors…

      (Quote)

  43. Richie, it was back in the mid 90s and even tho I went to the run I had no real intention of actually doing it. Let me just say that one should not make brave promises to their mates while drunk and expect to be let off in the morning! Glad I did it but I bricked it the whole way! 😯

      (Quote)

  44. I guess when you’re only used to drinking Fosters then go to Europe and have a “proper” beer it’ll make you do strange things 😉 😆
It was the last day today, the lad was running wi bits of his thigh flapping about, worst one I’ve seen this week. Still, if you play with fire…
