Janmaat joins as Debuchy departs!

Going Dutch with Daryl...
Going Dutch with Daryl…
Newcastle have completed the signing of former Feyenoord defender Daryl Janmaat.

24-year-old Janmaat joins the United having put pen to paper on a six-year-deal for a fee believed to be around £5 million. He becomes our sixth signing of the summer to date following the arrivals of Ayoze Perez, Jack Colback, Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere.

He was a regular for his previous club Feyenoord making a total of 74 appearances for the Dutch club, scoring five goals along the way. He also chipped in with seven assists last season but couldn’t do enough to help his team win the league, losing out to Siem De Jong’s Ajax in the end.

His good form earned him a call up to the Netherlands World Cup squad where he started two group games and put in a few impressive performances before being dropped for the knockout rounds. He did make three very good substitute appearances in the latter rounds and even set up the third goal in Netherlands’ final game against Brazil.

This is what he had to say in his first interview as a Newcastle player:

“Newcastle is a fantastic club, with a big history and a great stadium. I have also been told all about how great the fans are,” said Janmaat.

He added: “This is the perfect move for me, and I am really looking forward to being with the team and getting started here at Newcastle. I think we are going to have a great season.”

This is Mr Pardew’s take on the signing:

“We are delighted to bring Daryl to the Club. He is the perfect example of a modern full-back; someone who is good defensively but offers a real threat going forward as well.”

Adding: “Daryl had an excellent World Cup and we are looking forward to him continuing that form for Newcastle.”

Here is a quick YouTube video of Janmaat in action. Just to whet your appetite a little…

Another signing done, the squad is shaping up nicely and the atmosphere around the club has improved dramatically in the last few days though there are still grumbles here and there. Is he an improvement on Mathieu Debuchy? Well that is up for debate and I’m sure debate it we will but I’m just glad we have got him in before letting Debuchy join Arsenal.

What are your thoughts on Janmaat and the summer transfers in general? Is letting Debuchy go for a fee in the region of £10m and replacing him with a player at half the price a good piece of business?

  1. Disapointed if Ings is the striker; He had a fine season but his previous record suggests it was a one off (Just like Burnleys stay in the PL will be)

Shola also had a better than 1 in 2 record in the championship, Hardly a ringing endorsement for standard of the division…

      (Quote)

  2. Aye

Aye, though he let a big lead slip today from 7 lead down to 2. I suppose that means a little drama for the fans.

    CC

agree. if we are really wanting another striker i think it will be someone from abroad. Riviere is better than Ings.

      (Quote)

  3. Agree with CC , why pay money for a player untried in the premiership when we could give the 2 Adams a go ? after all at some point our bairns need to be blooded .

      (Quote)

  4. The lad might have a great season and sign for a top club next summer, But id rather see how he fares this season against quality defenders

There has to be better out there if weve got (allegedly) £15m to play with

      (Quote)

  5. Well it looks like I’m on me own with Ings then 😆
But that’s ok, I still believe he’s right for us. He’s strength, pace and style of play is excellent for such a young lad. He plays through the middle – the width of the box, and scores all kind of goals – headers, sitters, outside the box, left or right foot.
I’m not suggesting he’s the complete CF at 21, but I honest see his value soaring.

CC – don’t forget that Shola had PL players creating his chances. Ings hasn’t had Nolan and Barton to play off.

I wouldn’t pay £15m for Ings, but I’d go as high as £8m for the lad.

Or, buy Grenier for £10m now, then pay £4-5m for Ings in Jan when he’s only got 6 mth left on his contract.

  6. SHARPY your not on your own mate I think he’s worth a shot at 4/5 mil we both know how hard the CCC is to play in,certainly harder than some lge abroad at the lower end,we couldn’t even give Shola away from the PL,as you know some fans even rated him ffs, stick to your view mate, one mans meat and all that 😉

      (Quote)

  7. Nothing against Ings but there doesn’t seem to be a recent history of CCC strikers doing well in their first year in the Prem…..or am I imagining that???

      (Quote)

  10. Ice – add Jay Rodrigez to that list as well mate.
No I won’t be swayed, coz I genuinely believe the lad would be good for 12 to 15 goals per season with De Jong and Cabella behind him.
£4-5m would be great but I’d go as high as £8m – which would leave plenty for a CB as well.

      (Quote)

  11. SHARPY just for you.grab him i say

Newcastle have been told they can sign Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier for €8-10 million

      (Quote)

  12. @Ice

I just enjoy keeping my foot on top of Santii’s head and rubbing his nose in it. 😛

I’m surprised we are in for another midfielder. We need a striker as a priority.

      (Quote)

  13. TROY 😆 😆 could we not push jong up top he can there, and bring him in,plus imo its a c/b we need

      (Quote)

  14. @Ice

Sam D Jong is a midfielder and to push him up front is just another case of square pegs. No doubt if Pards did that he would be criticised for it.

Why not forget about Grenier and ‘sign a natural forward.

And yes, you’re right. We need a CB as well.

As I’ve said recently, I’m not impressed by the squad in the least.
    It’s still pathetically under strength.

A mid table outfit at best. Without another new quality striker then we will struggle.

      (Quote)

  15. Ice – that’s £6.5 – 8m mate 😯 That’s a feckin steal!!.
We really should be signing him for that price I reckon.

Hell we could get Grenier and Ings for that £15m.

      (Quote)

  16. TROY come on now you know pardew is a master at tactics and jabba wants to win the lge 😀 😀 😀

  17. SHARPY thats what i was trying to tell Troy, the guys a steal, would defo have been in WC if not for injury

      (Quote)

  18. Lads, it’s pointless having a pile full of midfielders and trying to please them by playing one up front just to keep them in the team.

That’s £5m -£7m that could be spent on a natural striker.

  20. Troy – it depends on what formation we go with mate. Look at how many midfielders Arsenal and Chelsea have, and they weren’t littered with CFs last season.

If you consider that there is every likelihood we will see Benny, Marv, Jonas and Obertan leave – then I would argue that we would benefit from having Grenier.

We need another CF, but if we can get Grenier for around £7m – that would leave £8m for a CF. If that doesn’t buy a CF then it would cover the cost of loaning one – Remy cost £5m last season.

As for CB. I think one would have to leave first anyway. I don’t see us getting another in while we have 4 senior CBs already.

      (Quote)

  21. Kim – well that’s good news about Arsenal anyway. If we do go for him they would without doubt have been huge competition

  24. Grenier want’s champions league club. They can afford to pay out 8 million while Ashley plays the waiting game. I’m extremely disappointed with are strike force Very weak and one injury away from catastrophe.

      (Quote)

  25. Perez might not ever make it. Riviere might need a certain period of adjustment. Cisse might not ever fully recover. Campbell and Armstrong aren’t ready. I fear our team need that someone special up front.

      (Quote)

  26. Interesting words from Pardew: “Sydney and Wellington will provide us with two very tough games, and that is something we will relish.

“Through these games, they will also be able to gauge themselves against us and get a good indication of where they are at compared to an English Premier League side.

“We are looking to change our style of play a little bit this year, and this trip will be a good process for its evolution.

So a change in style of play 😯 The players we have signed are an indication that things may change but the cut and thrust of the premiership can certainly destroy game plans if the players aren’t up for it.. Time will tell. 😕

Well done to Rory as well!! 😛

      (Quote)

  27. Troy I am a big Obertan fan and I think it’s very unfair that Pardew won’t play him. His got great pace and would probably make a good striker ?
We have an incredible manager Alan Pardew so why doesn’t he use him. I think most people on this blog would throw there season ticket in the bin if he left.

      (Quote)

  28. I was gutted when Shola left the club. We will never find a better striker than him. Sad but true.

  29. Got to love the call of “I want to play champions league football”
It basically founded on the fact that the top champions league clubs are big spenders (generally) and will offer a good wedge of coin for players. So the players and their greedy agents will get a nice payday if indeed a club comes in for them. However, there are only so many starting spots in the top CL teams and there seems a greater amount of players banging on about wanting to “play champions league football”. Now here is a list of all the champions league teams 2013 – 2014.
    FC Bayern München (GER)
    2 FC Barcelona (ESP)
    3 Chelsea FC (ENG)
    4 Real Madrid CF (ESP)
    5 Manchester United FC (ENG)
    6 Arsenal FC (ENG)
    7 FC Porto (POR)
    8 SL Benfica (POR)
9 Club Atlético de Madrid (ESP)
    10 FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
    11 AC Milan (ITA)
    12 FC Schalke 04 (GER)
    13 Olympique de Marseille (FRA)
    14 PFC CSKA Moksva (RUS)
    15 Paris Saint-Germain FC (FRA)
    16 Juventus (ITA)
    17 FC Zenit (RUS)
    18 Manchester City FC (ENG)
    19 AFC Ajax (NED)
    20 Borussia Dortmund (GER)
    21 FC Basel 1893 (SUI)
    22 Olympiacos FC (GRE)
    23 Galatasaray AŞ (TUR)
    24 Bayer 04 Leverkusen (GER)
    25 FC København (DEN)
    26 SSC Napoli (ITA)
    27 RSC Anderlecht (BEL)
    28 Celtic FC (SCO)
    29 FC Steaua Bucureşti (ROU)
    30 FC Viktoria Plzeň (CZE)
31 Real Sociedad de Fútbol (ESP)
    32 FK Austria Wien (AUT)

So why don’t Mr Grenier and his colleagues that bang on about CL footy go and play for Celtic or Anderlecht of FC Zenit if they are desperate to play champions league football?
Can’t see it happening 😕 Not glamorous enough perhaps?

      (Quote)

  30. Forget about Grenier, he’s very talented, but we already got de Jong who’s a bit similar & who should become very important. Forget Lacazette, we signed Riviere who’s not as talented, had the attrbutes to make it in PL, like Remy. We need to sign Andy Carroll back, he left with unfinished business, and if we can bring his best, he’s the guy I want. No mention to the job he can do in set pieces one of our major weakness and the fact he can creates goals for de Jong ala Nolan
    Krul
    Janmaat Dier Coloccini Haidara
    Colback Tioté
    Sissoko S. de Jong Cabella
    Carroll
With Riviere Carroll Armstrong Cissé, we have many different options who could work in function of opponents or away/home.

And dont say Carroll=Hoofball; with clevers players we have to be able to play small or big during a game. Playing Big is part of the game and still works with a real target man and pace, skills and unselfishness around.
And get that Eric Dier lad.

      (Quote)

  31. Carroll….no thanks…..people still think he a good striker based on 1/2 a season of good football.. I remember arguing with Troy when he was banging on about Carroll being a better option than Ba (when we first signed Ba) 😆 Oh how the gloss has worn off poor old Andy!! I do admire the romantic notion that he will come good when he comes back home!! The prodigal son -13 “Not long after that, the young Andy got together all he had, set off for a distant Liverpool and there squandered his wealth in wild living… how biblical!! 😛 😆

      (Quote)

  32. Ba is better than Carroll, I have no doubt, but think Carroll could be great addition for us

      (Quote)

  33. Carroll would definitely add a physical presence up top.. we have been lacking someone that will give centre backs a torrid time physically! I would have him back but only for the the numbers mentioned above 6-8m… not worth anything more than that..

Without a quality forward in and a CB of quality we will struggle as the depth of forwards and decent defenders is poor. We have too many weak fringe players that need shipping so that better players can come in .

      (Quote)

  53. Icedog @ 512: Just so that this doesn’t turn into an urban myth for the season, Pardew didn’t say they wanted champions league this year. He said they were aiming for champions league, but doing it in an educated way – that could mean over a few seasons, as that would be the sensible way to build up to it. There was no mention of doing it this year.

Just saying. These things have a habit of becoming myths – like the ‘we’re not interested in the cups’ ‘we don’t want to be in the Europa League’ ‘we are aiming for 10th’ sort of thing.

Mind you, unless Pardew ups his game over the next few years it won’t matter how educated the approach is.

      (Quote)

  54. Bris this sure sounds like he’s talking about this year though.

“We can’t afford to do that, so we are trying to do it in a more educated way.” “Trying to bring in players that we think can make that step. This year we are as well set as at any time that I’ve been at the club, to make a go of it.”

      (Quote)

  55. I know its hard geting rid of players but if we can get rid of at least 2 cb and bring 2 in il be a lot happier weve lost any team morale that was there with so many players coming and going so think we might as well change as many as we can on the centre backs front

      (Quote)

  56. if they done it right ya probally wound not need to buy players for at least a couple of years so he might splash the cash and go the whole hog this summer
