Who do we sing for?

I have nothing against protests. In my life I’ve been in involved with protest marches against Apartheid, marches in support of Gay Rights, Peace marches, Anti-war rallies, Nuclear Disarmament, and many local government issues.

Sing it out loud
Sing it out loud

Protests are good; they are cathartic; they get hate, anxiety, frustration, anger out of the system. And they make you feel as if you are doing something, giving voice to an opinion and showing your feelings in a public forum. Many say that protests have no effect, that they are useless, powerless. I disagree. The solidarity of people is an incredible force, and the raised voices of public opinion is a massive noise that those in power cannot easily dismiss.

Make no mistake, a unified protest of ordinary people is a powerful thing.
However, as usual, what may be good in a social sphere may not be good in football. Just as people say that rules of running a large corporation do not apply to the running of a football club, the same applies to protesting.
The reason is that there are separate entities at play. On the one hand, you have the football team, which we all want to win; on the other hand, there are the people we want out of the club. Unfortunately, acting against one rubs off on the other.
The only way that I can see of separating them is by protesting in two different places. The team is most important, and they play inside St Jams’ Park, therefore the lads need support inside the ground.
Any protest against those we want rid of should be outside the ground.
I can’t see how raging against the regime from the stands can fail to rub off on the performance of the team. If the players are on a knife edge due to anxiety in the crowd, there is little chance of them relaxing into a game, and believe me one of the main things thing that coaches call out to young players is ‘relax’ (those faces Pardew pulled for Cabella a couple of weeks back were about the same thing – relax).
I’ve even read some stuff about fans supporting Hull, Bruce, Ben Arfa. In my view, this is not protest; this is hysteria.
Protest is focused (or it should be); hysteria is unfocused emotional excess.
It must never be forgotten that we sing for Newcastle United, but we protest against a regime we dislike.

  1. It should be noted that this was written before the Hull game, and even before Pardew mentioned hysteria.

I thought the crowd were very good at getting behind the team yesterday. Full marks to them. They did well. I’m pleased to see that the hysteria of some people on this and other blogs isn’t as widespread as the media would have us believe (or would try to whip up).

  2. Dear me. 😯 it sounds like Begas is a right Wolfie Smith! 😛

Power to the people. 😛 hmm foxy 😆

I find the Pardew out campaign, issuing placards and chanting on 5 mins as pathetic. I would understand if for one second, a change in manager was going to solve or cure the source of the problem but the simple facts are, it would amount to sticking a plaster over it. 🙄

I would gladly hold up an Ashley out placard. Now that’s not pathetic. That’s making an effort to drive out the problem, whether it would work or not, probably not in the short term but each protest is another brick in the wall.

  4. Bris…Thou doth protest too much methinks 😉

Pretty much agree, I was at the demo before the Hull game 6 years ago and no one will convince me that the atmosphere during the game afterwards didn’t contribute to that defeat. Obviously fans have aright to vent their anger but personally I think it should be kept to pre and post match and half time, so well done to the fans yesterday who on the whole gave the team their support when they needed it most.

Same, What an impact that day had in the long run

While im not particularly happy with the result, I am very happy to see Tiote and Cisse looking like their old selves. A fit & confident Cisse would make all the difference

  6. Deary me. 🙄
Placards against Ashley won’t work either.
Yesterday during the FCB song he was laughing and put a thumbs up to the crowd.
Personal insults and protests don’t yurt him anymore, he just laughs at us.
I totally disagreed with the protest on 5 mins. Have to support the team at that point in the match.
The time to turn on Pardew was when the game was lost. Strangely it was never lost yesterday.
Virtually the same team that couldn’t be bothered at Southampton dominated possession throughout the match. Some nice build up work and attacking thrust, let down by the lack of quality and numbers in the box.
A shocking gamble by Pardew to throw on Cisse, payed off, with 2 nice goals for the Lad.
Perhaps the team as a whole isn’t as **** as some would have us believe.
It’s hard to understand the change on performances from the same group of players. Colo said they were playing for Jonas, which is interesting.
So Pardew survives for a few more weeks, despite setting out with the same defensive game plan at home to an average mid to low EPL team.
“sack Pardew” wont go away though. Rightly or wrongly. The shocking stats of his reign are there in Black and White.
    NUFC deserves better.

  7. Bris – from your previous thread.
Let me be clear, I said earlier in that thread that I am an NUFC fan more than a Pardew hater, and will go into every game wanting the 3 points. I was pleased we salvage a point, but disappointed and annoyed we went 2 goals behind in the first place.
I actually don’t hate Pardew at all, I just think it isn’t working.
I didnt analyse or armchair manage anything yesterday. You said you were happy with what you saw and I didnt feel we offered enough.
It’s great that we showed heart, had lots of possession and played some half decent football – but it was a game what we needed to win! – it was a game PARDEW needed to win to ease some of the pressure.
It’s my opinion (as a fan) that playing 1 up front doesn’t give us enough in the final third – regardless of how well we do behind that. It’s also my opinion that he is destroying Rivieres confidence by leaving him up there alone.
Funnily enough, Pardew himself said on MOTD that he is putting too much on Rivière and we aren’t getting the service and support to him. He also said that while the performance was better, 2-2 at home to Hull isn’t good enough and we should be winning those games. I thought his post match comments were excellent yesterday actually.

  8. This mess will not get better until the Fat Jabba has left. That’s not going to happen anytime soon while we continue to turn up and 50,000 fans takes their seats. I’m not going anymore and will cancel my ticket in January and return when Jabba has gone.

We need to get attendences down to 35,000 and then Jabba will start to realise he’s taken us far too much more granted and will realise it’s not working, sponsors will be up in arms and he will know the end is nye for him.

    No other way.

The soul’s been ripped out. What’s the point in mid-table finishes to relegation battles with a player turnstile at our now glorious stepping stone of a club.
I’m not even angry anymore. the club needs rid of Ashley no matter the cost.

many many yrs because of jabba,I pick and choose games I go to and there’s not many and buy nowt when I do go,its just my protest its not much but I feel better, now re protests I agree with Brivs thread but until fans really get together we will never shift him but as you know mate a lot of people are all wind and water that’s life Ime afraid, jabba does not live and breath in this area unlike past owners of the club so it has little effect on him, until we get together it will fail to remove him

  13. I want Ashley out as much as anyone, but I don’t believe there is a single thing the fans can do to quicken that up – other than buy the club, but that isn’t going to happen.
Boots is right. This bloke isn’t fat, it’s the thickness of his skin that makes him look fat!. We don’t turn up and the money stops coming in – It won’t affect Ashley, it will affect the money spent on the club or transfers or play wages.
If the club have come out and said we have Ashley until the end of next season (at least), then that will be the case. He is the core of all things wrong at the club, but how do you get rid of him?.

      (Quote)

  14. Ice – I know what you’re saying, but Cisse actually celebrated WITH Pardew – or gave him a high five at least. I’m not sure their relationship is as bad as the media make out. Pardew gave Cisse the no. 9 shirt again this season, so that would suggest he’s always been in his plans.
Cisse looked sharp yesterday, better than he has in a long time. I get the feeling he is over the injury, he’s just not match fit.

      (Quote)

  15. I disagree. I actually think putting Cisse on was one of the things Pardew got right yesterday – providing it doesn’t have a detrimental effect on Cisses recovery.
The manager is there to make those calls. It was a calculated risked which worked yesterday as Cisse bagged 2 goals – as many as he had got in he’s previous 30 odd games.
I agree that if it results in Cisse being sidelined again, when was it worth it?. But there is nothing saying that Cisse is injured that I’ve heard of – so actually, it may well have resulted in boosting Cisses confidence getting back on the score sheets.

      (Quote)

  16. Yes, it was a desperate last roll of the dice from Percy. It paid off this time, but he never learns. Even after the Je Dong incident.
I must say though that Cisse seemed happy enough to go on, and his goals will boost his confidence no end.
It’s great to see him smiling again.

  17. There are a few articles today that say Pards went against doctors advice putting Cisse on yesterday

    Over to Alan Pardew;

“Fortunately the doctor was on a course this week so he didn’t get a say.

“He has worked hard Papiss but he’s had wastage on his muscle after the injury and it is not quite as strong as it perhaps should be.

“We worked really hard on that and he has just come back.

“His legs are fine but he hasn’t really kicked a football but we’ve seen enough to know he’ll sniff a goal out.

“Papiss came off the bench and showed an example, maybe to Emmanuel (Riviere), that pessimism in the box can get you rewards.

“I feel sorry for Manu, he is twenty four years old, come to this football club, trying to carry the number nine shirt on his own, and never had a chance to rest him. He’ll have learnt today.”

      (Quote)

  18. I think Pardew playing De Jong was an act of desperation, and had he got the CF in the transfer window that he needed, then maybe De Jong would have got the time to recover properly.
I think Pardew was clearly hoping for a win before the international break to take some of the pressure off. Play De Jong, get the win then De Jong would have the break to rest up. It didnt work that way, and it was a bad call from a desperate man.

  21. Cissé went to see Pardew after his goal, and for me he’s been the most mismanaged player under AP, remember when he played on the wing?? But always worked hard to give his best, remember how many Papiss Cissé grabbed us the win in stoppage time?? AP knows that he can rely on him. And the difference between this season and the last is that we badly need a closer. Last season, Cabaye played to attract more and more interest, as for Rémy. For me the return of 433 is needed, because with Cabella working hard ang getting better, he’ll create chances as other players.

  22. Am I the only to thing Dummett’s critiscism is very unfair? And that he coped well by playing his way, he’s a defender 1st and that helps the back5 and that allows to Janmaat to bring more in offense. Dummett plays short, no nonsense, and plays hard, and I think that with him and Tioté back, we defend better.

    —Ameobi—————————–Cabella

Or something looking like that and go get the win there. And need to bring Ferreyra back, he’s better than Riviere. And sign Carroll in January

I bet it doesn’t mention that? Is it coincidence that when he’s lost our best and most influential players we hav struggled?

I think it was Fergie who said if you want a good team you need good players, if you have average players you will have an average team.

    Not rocket science.

  30. The rumours you’ve all heard are true mates. Yes, Pardew has promised Mike a win this season. He is going out on a limb but that’s the sort of man he is. His direct quote:
“Mike if I’m honest I think we have a win in us this season. I’m not saying it will be pretty. I’m not saying it will thrill you but we will win one.”

  33. Of course we all realize that Mike’s long term goal is to drive us all completely mad. I’m well on the way (99.7%, I had myself tested). But aside from that does he have any other goals? To have the least well run club in all of League Football? Hmmmm. Let’s see, 91 other clubs. We’re bottom of the Prem but that leaves a long way to go. Back to work Mike.

  35. Are the rumours true that Pardew has promised Mike a win this season you ask yet again? As Official Club Journo it’s my duty to look into this. It seems highly unlikely on the face of it. Dear Mr. Hobbit
I’m having nightmares after watching our games on the telly. And me dad wakes up screaming as well. Me poor mam is beside herself with worry. Do you have any advice?
Thanks for that Sammy. It’s a difficult time for all of us. Slip some anti-depressants in your poor dad’s evening refreshment. As for yourself I recommend my new book 1001 Tales of Happier Times at Newcastle United. Stories of happy times with Sir Bobby and KK. Makes lovely bedtime reading Sammy.
    All the best.

…and yeah mate I’m fine, hows you?

      (Quote)

  38. Lads,,, let’s look at this from a slightly different angle. Ok we’re bottom of the table again. There are some very decent clubs above us. Many of them have wonderful caring owners who actually think about their clubs……Now….Where was I going with this???? Oh never mind!!!! Harrumph!!!

      (Quote)

  39. Stu – I’m sure Pardew would, if he didnt have to work within the policy Ashley has set. I’m sure there are 28 yr old plus aged players that Pardew would still like to buy. I’m sure Pardew would love to spend more than £10m on a player. I’m sure Pardew would love to sign a couple of English players – Shelvey and Townsend I believe were on his wish list. But if they aren’t for sale, or are out of the policy, then we won’t buy them and they move onto another on the list – usually a French one 🙄
But I don’t believe that Pardew doesn’t have a say, he just doesn’t get his first choice option – which I agree isn’t much better like.
Other than Chucky – I don’t believe he had any input in Chuckys signing at all.

Kim – I bet Keane going in there has had a big impact. Their CM looks really solid since he went in.
If Pardew is staying then a new coach would be a good idea IMO, but I’m not sure who would want to go in to the club as things stand just now.

      (Quote)

  40. Kim – very early in the season, and Villa, like Swansea and West Ham look artificially high because that’s what the odd result can do. If we’d taken the chances created against Villa, Palace and Hull, or, if Cisse had been fir for all of those games, our **** squad can easily, yes with a bit of luck, have been sittting on 7 or 9 points.

For once couldn’t see the game – my little ones brought a bug back from school which made me sleep out cold from Sat. Lunchtime to just now. So, what did I miss – lucky Pardew, or we just needed a goalscorer (and still need a CB)?

  42. The lad who scored a brace for Leicester today was playing for Brighton last season, and Vardy who got MOTM today was playing for Fleetwood 2 years ago. No one will convince me their squad is any better than ours.
So we have an average squad – who are young and have plenty of potential. We also have a bang average manager, who along with his players is performing well below average. If Pardew isn’t capable of getting the most out of this young squad, then we replace him with one that can. That to me is also not rocket science.

We looked like never scoring until Pards chucked a still recovering Cisse on to grab two late goals and secure a point to temporarily lift us off the bottom.

I honestly believe we have players who are capable of giving more, but not under Pardews direction.
Tory – what summary do you neeed ? most of the stats are self explanary.
But if you really need a summary, take a long hard look at the league table. That’s a good enough summary for the last 4 years for me.
