That possibility is now a thing of the past thanks to a brace from Papiss Cisse who scored his fifth and sixth league goals of what has been a stop-start campaign for the Senegalese striker.
Of course this isn’t the first brace he’s scored against Chelsea with two spectacular strikes earning us a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge a few seasons ago. This time around his goals were of a different quality as he joined the game from the bench and demonstrated the knack of being on the right place at the right time proving that if you provide him with enough service he can and will score goals.
It was backs against the walls stuff for a lot of the game with United seemingly happy to let Chelsea have the ball in their own half whilst stifling any room for the more creative players within the Blues’ ranks to stamp their mark on the game. The likes of Diego Costa, Fabregas, Hazard and Willian were quiet on the day by all accounts.
That was to be expected as Jose Mourinho’s side have been drawing praise from all quarters but in the end it was the determination of United that won the day despite ten (well, 16 actually) very tense minutes at the end of the game following Steven Taylor’s dismissal for a silly second yellow card being punished immediately by Didier Drogba heading beyond Jak Alnwick but the visitors were unable to find an equaliser.
It’s a notable achievement for a Newcastle side that just a few months ago was floundering at the foot of the table yet now find themselves in and around the European places. It is of course early days and we’re not even halfway through the season but winning games isn’t a bad habit to be getting into.

Sissoko was a huge miss against Arsenal. Their defence was shaky and we never tested them. I said weeks ago that the upturn in fortune was due to players being missing. Willo, Cisse, Tiote, Gouffran were all back and we were again pathetic! They’re all really poor footballers. Leave them out for god’s sake. Perez was the only one who played well.
Riviere is like a stray dog on the pitch. Offers nothing. Fairy weight Cabella isn’t much better. £16m wasted. Pardew needs to tell Sammy he doesn’t have to run for the corner flag every time he gets the ball. Cut inside sometimes – you’ve got the skill.

This style is heavily reliant on Sissoko, but what other choice do we have? Pardew will stick to it because it’s the only way to keep the ever present pressure off, hence we’ll struggle to develop ways of coping without him and when we are without him we’ll go on a dismal run of form and the cycle starts again.

Troy I had my doubts about Carbella in january. I said he would need a certain period of adjustment but at 12 million ? It seem’s like a very bad deal to me. Siem De Jong has been injured most of his time here and seem’s like another bad signing. Riviere can only score against a reserve premier league side in the capitol one cup. I have always said, buying so many new players in one go was not sensible. You can’t expect them all to hit the ground running. We were forced into it though, by the continuing transfer policy of leaving the squad threadbare in quality.
Successful sides are normally stable. Buying one or two players per season to strengthen and freshen things up.
Not the toon. It’s a case of having a poor squad, selling the best players and bringing in untested premier league players and hoping. It just leads to mid table mediocrity.
But back to your point. Cabella and De Jong may well be major players for us next season. You certainly can’t say the money is wasted.
