The real reason United fans aren’t sad to see Pardew go

The myth behind the man
The myth behind the man
If, as expected, Alan Pardew is confirmed as Crystal Palace manager it leaves our club with a position to fill.

From the outside it looks as though Pardew has done a decent job at United with some sections of the media branding our treatment of him unfair during recent rumblings of discontent.

We keep hearing that we finished fifth, that we have unreasonable expectations, that our final league positions have been alright. Apparently we expect Champions League football and should just pipe down because we’ve won nothing for years and should just be happy with staying in the Premier League.

However I’ve stumbled across a page of facts that at least paint a fairer picture of why so many fans were becoming unhappy. As I said in a previous article, you can’t dine out on a fifth placed finished forever, but I’d like you all to cast your minds back to the end of the 2011/2012 season where times were happier and we’d just unexpectedly qualified for the Europe League. Now I’d like you to take a look at the table below…

Points table

All of these statistics have been compiled since we finished fifth so there are two complete seasons plus the games we’ve played this season which is quite sizeable example in fairness. They also compare with teams who have remained in the Premier League for the entire period. So, starting from the top left….

Games Won: These stats cover a total of 95 league games of which we’ve won 32. That’s a win ratio of just over 33%.

Games Lost: Of the 95 games, we’ve lost 45 which is 47% of our league games since the 2011/2012 season.

Clean Sheets: It’s not good reading here either as we’ve managed to maintain a clean sheet on just 21 occasions. Granted it’s unfair to land all of that at the feet of Pardew but there are signs that the defence needs work which have gone unheeded.

Failed to Score: We’ve fired blanks in 33 of these of these 95 games. Only Stoke and Aston Villa have failed to find the net more than us.

Goals For: Not good reading here either with just 107 goals scored, or an average of just over one per game.

Goals Against: A total of 153 goals conceded – 1.6 per match – the worst of the 15 teams sampled.

Goal Difference: A net goal difference of -46 which has only been ‘bettered’ by Aston Villa and their goal difference of -55.

Total Points: We’ve amassed 113 points – just under 1.2 each game.

Some of them aren’t bad but others are chronic and should help with why some fans have just had enough. Remember we’re not even talking about the waffle, flannel, headbutts, pushes, swearing, record losing streaks, historic runs of derby defeats and other incidents that have happened on his watch.

I’ve written this because I was stood having a coffee yesterday and was talking about football to a colleague. The subject came up about Pardew to Palace and his response was the same as many on the outside have said – “I thought he was doing OK for you lot,” he quipped. After a while pointing things out he got where we’re coming from.

So if you find yourself in a situation like that, whip this article out on your phone and show people that all has not been rosey in the garden of St James’ Park for some time and that we’re not a reactionary bunch. We’re just fed up with the excuses.

Agree or disagree?

  1. And let’s get this straight as well – we are left with Carver for now and by default because Pardew quit like the snake he is. If Mourinho quit Chelsea would we be obliged to support his former deputy? Not f#cking likely, me old China. So, why is the Troysta expecting undying support for Carver?

  2. Eric: I have no idea why you’d want Carver as the manager. Surely even you can think of better options.

  3. BrisV:

Here are some better options for Manager than Carver:

    A glowworm
    Brittney Spears
    Paul Hogan

  4. And BrisV: I have one more suggestion for a better manager than Carver:

    Donald Underwood: he’s my Dentist.

  5. Sorry, a couple more that are better than Carver, both dead, but that doesn’t mean they would be any worse than Carver:

    Skippy

Steve Irwin: Yes it is a reely good oideea to ploy around with dinegerous aneemals and feesh. Wite, theres a steen-rey. Moybee we can ploy with thet – oh f@ck.

  6. They will give anybody a chance the extremists.

Two games and Carver is getting slaughtered.

  7. If there is anyone out there who still argue that the clubs policy isn’t to get knocked out of the cup early need to look at the stats. One FA cup win in 5 years says a different story. Maybe the FA should be looking into this as it’s more or less match fixing.

      (Quote)

  8. its difficult to say if it was fixed. it would be the easiest excuse for our woeful record. but surely the players wouldnt be told to throw the game so they would still try their best. (you would hope).

You can understand the manager fielding a weakened team but we didnt have many fit players & it was only a slender defeat. The team wasnt that bad given the poor performances of Tiote & Colo of late.

Although it sounded like we werent too fussed to be there…

  9. Just hope Carver does not get the job.what a two faced git he is,praising toon fans yet only a couple of weeks ago he had a right “go” at the away fans and had to be held back, just like Pardew full of ****

  10. Like the list of managers popping up today, I expect some truth behind them as they arent the sort of names likely to be plucked from thin air.

    Advocaat, Garde, Tuchel, Favre

Theres no saying all of them if any would want the job but its nice to see some outside the box thinking rather than the usual suspects Sky linked us with straight away Bruce, Pulis, Curbishley, Sherwood

  11. It’s just the teams they pick. They know we have a poor squad so the chances of us winning a game putting out a team like we do are slim. We beat City and that’s not exactly a regular occurrence in cup games.

Simple reality is that it just didn’t matter who was in charge in the dig out, it was the same selection process and same result.

  12. its getting a bit hard to scroll through almost 1300 comments on the tablet, just copy and paste summin from one of the rags 🙂 .there was defo orders from above to field a weak team imo.

  13. Pardews Gash aka Mark@1291 …just watched the Cabella goal, there is no way he was offside … At the same time, with a porous defence that probably wouldn’t have been enough to see us through. Still really unfortunate for the goal to be disallowed…

I think we’ll be ok once all of our big hitters are back, and Carver gets a chance to get them playing the way he wants.

  14. can you not just stick a page jump in the html at the top of page to go to the bottom of the page. ❓

  15. I also think this charade about a short list of managers inc Garde, Hoddle, McLaren etc.. Is rubbish. Why not just come out and say it’s Carver? It’s so we should think the club have been through many potential coaches and they found Carver to be the best candidate…

  16. Lads I have done a quick article about the fa cup and yesterdays game. But who do I send to , Toonsy or Aussie? I need email address.

  17. Stuart79: unless a coach comes to SJP for an interview and we see him at Newcastle airport I think it will be just a sham. If we end up with Carver that will be a joke as he doesn’t have the credentials to manage NUFC. That is not laying into Carver after two games, I wouldn’t have even given him a single game, not even as caretaker. In fact, I would have sacked him ages ago and especially after his fan rant.

  18. KIM@1302 is it not the “contact” at top of thread? Big Dave would know, but its Sunday he will still be drunk 😆
Hope you and Lewis are good”’

  19. Has there been a sighting of Seim De Jong yet? I don’t expect him until March as the team covered up the extent of his injury. In fact, we didn’t even hear that he had an operation until he announced it himself on Twitter. Up until then, it was a knock or a bruise according to the club, even though he was on crutches for 6 weeks. This is the level of transparency we deal with at our club so it is no wonder we have no clue about the next manager.

  20. Hitman @1307, I wouldn’t have a problem with Hoddle at the toon.
He managed England, can talk French, and can handle the media. He’s also old enough and hard skinned enough to go his own way.
He’ll also happily bite the pillow which is a prime factor in managing the toon..

  21. Toonsy, get Kimtoons article up there…1310 posts and I’m sick of seeing Pardew’s dish at the top of the page.. 😆

  23. Eric sykes@1306, I reckon we won’t see the best of DeJong before next season. The bloke hasn’t had a chance to get up to speed with the EPL yet.. I think him and young Perez will form a great link up partnership..

      (Quote)

  24. Ice, when I did the last article I sent Toonsy a message via the contact thing but no reply. Ended up sending it to his Email, will try that if I can . It’s just a shorty one so folk can get on again.

  25. MM: I think De Jong is a good player, mainly based on the fact he was captain at Ajax and they don’t make bad players captain. However, his injury record scares me. It is a bit like the Taylors, you just worry that there is another “season ending injury” around the corner.

  26. Eric @1313 a wud but a cannot get a word in for yee and the other radgy taaalking ***** man.. 😆

  27. Ice, Lew has a cold which is always a mini disaster with him, just waiting for it to go on his chest now 🙁 We managed the whole of November and December with out him getting ill though which was a bonus.

  28. Eric Sykes@!§!%; i HOPE YOU#RE RIGHT about DeJong, and as you say we have to give the bloke a chance, he has a canny pedigree on paper at least.
There again so did his brother …and Anita…and we got sold a serious pair of donkeys ears with those two wasters !…

      (Quote)

  29. Total Radgy: fantastic response. When is your next comedy special? Just write something interesting about the players, the club, the managerial situation…

      (Quote)

  30. Right, have emailed article to Toonsy. hopefully not too busy to put it up if he’s happy with it.

  32. Well said Psychs 😉

I can’t abide these whinging ninnies who complain they can’t get on the blog but when it’s quiet they are never there anyway, or if they do, it’s normally one or two posts about football thenn they get onto their favourite subjects, TV, the soaps or favourite foods. Dear me FTSOTB 🙄

      (Quote)

  33. It’s a pity there’s nowt happening at the toon that would warrant a new article like …. Nee access to this one for about 200 posts now like 🙁 👿

      (Quote)

  34. Pardew reckoned we needed to be better at retaining the ball. Then the bloke plays Williamson and Tiote, two blokes who couldn’t retain the ball to save there lives ! If there are two players at the toon who are uncomfortable on the ball, then those two sum things up ! There again ball retention doesn’t necessarily mean goals, but without the ball it is even more difficult to score goals !.. Get the ball to Perez and Cisse and we will score goals, we need to get the midfield and the defensive spine of the side sorted out.

      (Quote)

  35. MM you called it mate a bloody shower,a rookie keeper so let’s put a greatdefender in there to help him bloody willo, when will these so called coaches learn putting poor.players or out of form players (tiote) on the field just brings the so calledbetter players down to their level trying to cover their *** end result total ****

      (Quote)

  36. Icedog@1331, you have played footy at a good level mate …there are too many senior players passing the buck at the moment, expecting someone else to do the business.
Thats what I like about young Perez, he always tries to make something happen, and looks forward… ditto young Armstrong…

Our central defence and a lightweight midfield is our problem if you ask me. Too much brawn and not enough intelligence in our midfield play. Hopefully De Jong can help sort out the problems…

      (Quote)

  37. Eric Sykes av got nowt to say to you, you’ve got nee idea kidda … keep playing your daft games with the other knackas

      (Quote)

  38. MM I rate De Jong highly but afraid it will be next season until we see the real player,I agree with you on those two young players along with young Aarons we have pace and forward thinking young kids, now we just need some other players to forget there egos and work for the team

      (Quote)

  39. Icedog, spot on there mate…
We also need more intelligence in our midfield… we need someone to wrestle the ball off Tiote because the bloke is trying too hard, surely someone with common sense can coach this out of the bloke ?

Imagine if we had a central defender who could actually carry the ball forward and pass the ball into the openings, instead of shiting in there pants and just lumping it forward…

      (Quote)

  40. So Radgy @1334: what is the f2cking point of you coming on and saying anything? Have a bit of a moan and slither away. Pathetic.

At least Troysta brings a different point of view and between his woo hoos is semi-coherent and makes a f@cking point, unlike you KIDDA.

      (Quote)

  41. Total radgy, I was wondering the same thing myself.
We are going to need him in January though.

Wouldn’t it be funny if the likes of Vukic, Abeid, Perez, Collback etc went on to form the backbone of the team ?

      (Quote)

  42. Ah OK Radgy, you said something. That’s better. If you have ever read anything on here you will see that Troysta likes and agrument and sometimes I am in the mood to give him one 🙂

      (Quote)

  43. agrument 🙂 that’s why I normally stay away from making fun of spelling mistakes on the internet.

      (Quote)

  44. Carver said:

“Daryl Janmaat had a problem with his groin; Moussa Sissoko – both of his hamstrings were tight and I didn’t want to risk that; Fabricio Coloccini had a problem with a nerve leading into his buttock; Steven Taylor we lost because of a snapped Achilles. Even the morning of the game, we had Jack Colback travel with us despite having a tight hamstring.”

Yeah, right. And I don’t want to go into work on Monday after a long New Year’s weekend and picked up a bit of a hamstring, the flu, dengue fever, bubonic plague or something. Carver is having a larf. We have two weeks before Southampton (after a throwaway Chelsea game) and we have never been concerned about niggling injuries under Pardew – witness Cisse playing against Leicester at home against Doctor’s orders.

      (Quote)

  45. I wouldn’t normally question keeping a player out as a precaution but it just seems so bloody convenient, especially given the statements made about how cups are pretty meaningless for us now. They should refund the 4,000 fans that went to Leicester their money.

      (Quote)

  46. Kimtoon: it is not like Man City in the League Cup where it was a roll of the dice and we expected nothing. This is Leicester, bottom of the League, we are talking about. We should have put the best team out. The FA Cup is also much bigger than the League Cup. How gullible do they think we are?

      (Quote)

  47. I have also seen a million times players say that during a long season they are always playing with minor knocks and injuries, and it is just part of the game. It makes a mockery of Carver’s excuses and that is what they are, excuses. Carver is useless and the sooner he leaves the better.
