Next in line!

Forget the cup. Forget Pardew. The only question of any importance for me at the moment is who will be the next manager, or should that be head coach?
Working within what we see as the main parameters of the job – and whether they are true or not is irrelevant for this exercise – which appear to be centred on budget constraints for new players and personal wage demands, who do you want next, and why?
The internet is full of shortlists for the job, so you should have no end of options available to you. I would imagine just about every possibility has been mentioned somewhere.
Having googled my way through many many of them, my vote goes to Lucien Favre.
I know almost nothing about the guy other than what I’ve read on the internet, but he may well fit the bill: he understands the head coach role, works with limited resources, works with young guys, plays a fast counter-attacking kind of football which would take Pard … er … the tactics of the last guy we had, to that coveted new level. He speaks French and English and has had some success with moderate sides.
I have no idea what his wage demands would be so it’s pointless me making any comments there, but perhaps a lucrative incentive package might help smooth the path.
So, for the sake of getting another thread running, throw your hat in the ring (rather than talking through it) …

  1. Baggies winning 6 points behind us and Toffees just equalised so 5 points behind us, getting awful tight in that 17 to 10 zone now 🙄

  2. Kim – You’re right about the relegation zone. WBA and Burnley both winning and if Palace get the new manager bounce we will only be 7 points off the bottom three and after today we will have lost something like 7 out of 9 games and 7 away games without a win.

We’re not safe yet and the club need to get the next appointment Bang on.

  3. Stu ,I predicted 16th finish and right now I’d bite your hand off for it. I don’t think in all honesty we’d of won if Percy was still here but the fact is we got some sticky games coming up . Saints are our bogey team and Hull are scrapping and Stoke are a right pain in the ****. Oh and guess who’s up after that, yep Percy’s lot 🙄

  4. We are really gonna miss Cisse too, typical just has he’s found form again too. Watch him come back crocked, bet the club have no contingency for that event either.

  5. Right, time to roll up the sleeves and get to work on some signings me thinks or ACON will screw us, needed Papiss today.

  6. it was a nothing game.we played really well in the first half and cabella thats the best hes played.wonder what would of happend under percy. 😉 🙂

  7. We played well in the first half but our finishing was poor, then we switched off and as soon as the first goal went in everyone just gave up. Chelsea were dog ****, they barely pushed for a second goal but when they had that they weren’t fussed. They were much worse than when we beat them a couple of weeks ago, so it’s annoying that we couldn’t actually get a point or three. Reckon if we could have bagged the first one or two we’d have got the win because Chelsea really weren’t all that and we just rolled over for them in the second half.

      (Quote)

  8. I thought we played better than when we beat them at SJP. They dominated that game and had something like 26 shots. Williamson again the weak link and when are we going to stop that diagonal free kick to him on the corner of the box?

      (Quote)

  9. we’re in a relegation battle. I hope the light has gone on at SJP, because everyone else recognises it.

Pity our finishing was **** today…

  10. We didn’t play a bad game. In fact we were the better team in the first half. Janmaat was completely out of position on the first goal. It was a quick short corner that caused the problem. Not so good for us in the second half. Cabella probably had his best game for us to date. Perez tried hard but was too isolated. Sissoko made his usual powerful runs. We’re going to get caught out on defense over and over again as Willo is too slow and that leaves Colo with too much to do. Dummett isn’t a great fullback is he?

      (Quote)

  11. Now is the time to act Ashley. Bring in a new head coach and let him pick his coaching staff. Give him some money for a CB or two and a couple of forwards if possible. Otherwise we are going to slide down the table quite a way. And you won’t like that will you MIke?

      (Quote)

  12. It is sad state of affairs when people say we are missing Cisse, who is an average forward. What I would interpret that as is we are missing a striker. Full stop

      (Quote)

  13. I think it’s more of putting things in perspective, Hitman. It’s very difficult to acheive anything of any note while running a transfer surplus which isn’t spent every year.

      (Quote)

  14. Hitman – Pardew oversaw the increase of financial value on several players who we then sold, so technically he is right. Now whether he personally improved them as players is up for debate 😆

      (Quote)

  15. Ah well at least Palace are losing today, it should ease the fears of some of those getting scared about relegation again 🙂

      (Quote)

  16. What a difference it makes to have a goal scorer. Kane has had one chance and its in the bag of the net.

      (Quote)

  17. NEWKIE cannot say Pardew improved players but bloody strange Cabella played like some say he can now Pardew is out of his hair

      (Quote)

  18. Ice – agreed I think players may have improved naturally but not really as a result of Pardew of our coaching but that’s not too out of the ordinary for a club like us. Cabaye probably improved with us but he definitely isn’t at PSG 😆

Cabella defo had a good game, though I doubt Carver had anything to do with it, some players just take time to adjust. I think he just needs that first goal to settle the nerves.

      (Quote)

  19. We have the worst goal difference in the top 12 at -8. And now we have only 2 frontline CB’s. Predictions for the rest of the season unless Mike steps in? Grim I’m afraid. And Southampton next. We don’t play well against them. Could be a -11 goal difference by the time that match is over.

      (Quote)

  20. Mikey boy the first to text Pardew to congratulate him I see. He’d probably do the same if Palace beat us.

In other news it’s reported Garde was in London today for talks with Charnley.

      (Quote)

  21. @Ice sweet. got £50 riding on it 😎

I reckon we’ll have a new manager and a couple of players within the next fortnight

      (Quote)

  22. Credit to Carver today mind. I honestly thought it would be men against boys today and we’d take a real beating. That wasn’t the case and we were all over them in the first half – Cabella being the best player on the pitch IMO.
I think Chelsea’s quality won through in the end, and that was the difference today.

So, we are speaking to Remi Garde then. I think we’ve been linked with better … and worse, so by that token I suppose that makes him average. But is he more or less average than Pardew?!. Also, will he be given money to spend?

      (Quote)

  23. Sharpy I agree Carver deserves some credit as the team seemed to have a bit of get up and go, we just seem to be missing a cutting edge to put our chances away. Oh and the CBs are bad we still need a real good CB or 2.

      (Quote)

  24. DAVE spot on mate,more-so with Willo and Drumment played outside his c/b role, need another c/b at least, attack as much as you like but with a doe-heed in defence your fooked

      (Quote)

  25. @Sharpy. good account. my thoughts also.

Krul has said thats one of the best performances of the season. I agree, first half we lost the containing shackles and went for it, but quality shone through.

Hopefully a new manager will play a similar style, with players due back I reckon our squad is more for attack than defending… as our defenders arent the best 😛

      (Quote)

  26. Ice my heart always sinks when I see Willo in the line up, I watched him wrestle with Costa even after he got his yellow, the guy is Championship at best and a team like our’s shouldnt be relying on him for 50% of our games over the last few season.

      (Quote)

  27. Never got to see the second half unfortunately, but that first half really was brillinat, and we should have scored at least 2 goals on the balance of play. A good solid first half performance with Sissoko and Janmaat excelling, Cabella buzzing all over the place with Perez somewhat subdued. The first Chelsea goal came at a bad time, and was completely against the run of play.

Can we play this well against supposed lesser teams ? Don’t think so 🙁

      (Quote)

  28. Big D, Willo gives his very best every game, it’s just the bloke is not good enough. That was Pardew’s standard line, defending bad players… it just doesn’t work mate, not at this level..

      (Quote)

  29. Sharpy – Any money NUFC spends on players will be financed by a sale. Doesn’t matter who the manager is as they wont have a choice who comes in.

      (Quote)

  30. Ice yeah I think I know the ones your talking about, is it called Tattoos after dark or something simular ?.

MM I know willo tries his best but for me his best isnt good enough, my mate that plays for my local irish premier league team would teach him a lesson and a EPL player should be better than that . On your question can we play against lesser teams that is a problem I have with our team we seem to be able to up our game against the big teams but against a lesser team we just never seem to give it our all

      (Quote)

  31. Willo was **** today and Colo turns to **** when paired with him 🙁 I actually think Willo is scared of the ball sometimes. Nice enough guy like but I don’t think he is comfortable at PL level .

      (Quote)

  32. Big D @1094, I’m with you all the way. That’s the way I see things too. What a pity our finishing today was so *****…though there is no doubting we went for it in the first half, and Sissoko was immense.

      (Quote)

  33. DAVE kna mate one is a compo tattoo master the other is how some guys do cover ups on **** tats, two diff shows

      (Quote)

  34. MM 100% mate but for me we just lack that goal scorer and the CB , it wouldn’t cost a fortune but I don’t think we’ll get the players we need unless we lose one of our best. Which is a shame.

Kim for me Willo is **** every game not just today

      (Quote)

  35. Just been on the Chronicle web site…man oh man there are some real knackers over there 😯 😯

big D…I’m not so sure mate, maybe we are not too far away, we just need tightening up, and Centre half is a critical position… it’s a tragedy that we haven’t done owt because next season we will have 3 senior centre halves all over 30, and only 1 of them, Collo, is any good. A shocking state of affairs.

      (Quote)

  36. I’ll say one thing for Carver, he talks very well. I got the feeling with Pardew that he was reluctant to have a go at the players, but reckon Carver would give them some home truths- especially about the poor defending for the first goal

      (Quote)

  37. Stuart79, I wouldn’t necessarily say Carver speaks “very well” as such, but he does speak the truth, which after 4 years of Pardew’s lies is a real bonus. Pardew cushioned bad players too much to the media imo..

      (Quote)

  38. Kimtoon @1105: he has no sense of irony or perspective, wasn’t he fined a total of 160k by club and league?

They are probably going to rely on Lascelles or whatever his name is coming in as the new centre back but they have to make a move now. They have to let Taylor go, let him run the contract down because you cannot rely on him to be fit. Williamson has to be dropped from the squad, he is always pointing to other players saying the player in possession should give the ball to them and not to him.

We are in dire need of another centre back so why not now even if it costs a couple of million extra – use the money from Roma, as I doubt MBiwa will be giving up that lifestyle any time soon.

If we get Garde, have him confer with Carr and get the best available Frenchy, f@ck whether he is out of contract in the summer. Or buy Scott Dann from Palace. They were using the Willo free kick and corner routines today except Dann is actually good at positioning and heading and it works.

  39. i’d just like to bring up a point about the first chelsea goal. haven’t seen a replay yet, so maybe i am wrong, but wasn’t colo off the pitch when chelsea took the quick corner ? shouldn’t the referee stop the game until both sides are 11 v 11 ? just look often how long referees take to blow there whistle to allow free kicks and corners to be taken in normal circumstances, but yesterday the ref just didn’t allow the toon to regroup as such. its not sour grapes at the end of the day, just one of the whol array of small decisions by the referee, the others being ignoring the constant fouling by fabregas, which changed the game in the end. the ref or linesman could or should have stopped the game to allow the toon to get 11 men on the pitch. the ball had gone out of play and the game had been stopped, but hats offf to chelsea for seizing the opportunity, a mourinho move if i have ever seen one !

      (Quote)

  40. Good to see Carver giving Remy confidence and starting him. He was like a new player. Makes you wonder why he’s never played this good before…hmmm i wonder 🙄

  41. Was listening to 606 last night and apparently Villa fans were fighting with each other in the stands . Got to say Villa are dreadful and look like relegation fodder, no doubt they’ll survive as they always do .

      (Quote)

  42. Hope they announce the Garde signing soon..seems to be some legs in the rumours but before anyone jumps down my throat. .I am still treating them as rumours and not as fact simply because it fits in with what I think! 😉

      (Quote)

  43. Mark , Cabella can take a lot of heart from yesterdays performance. He started off a bit poor but after 10 mins he got into his stride and was running rings round them. a wonderful display. Perez was constantly being fouled by them and took a couple of nasty knocks. I was angry with the ref as he wasn’t clamping down on it quick enough, and Fabregas was the main culprit imo . In the end they just had that step up in class up front, I knew they wouldn’t be as loose second half and they were beating us to every ball like we had beaten them first half. We really should of capitalised on our dominance first half but hey ho,such is football.

      (Quote)

  44. Can’t say for sure Kim..but I think he will get the best out of our lads and get some pass and move football happening…it seems that he has a certain style that he wants his football to be played.. which is more than I can say for the last bloke..he had no discernable style at all

      (Quote)

  45. Great to see Aussie being positive again. I’ll give it 4 weeks and he’ll be on Carvers back for being Clueless. 😛

      (Quote)

  46. Interesting stat Sky Sports are running with; Pardew has won more points from losing positions this season than any other manager. Another stick used to beat Pardew that’s snapped.

      (Quote)

  47. Apparently Pardew has 10% more hair than any other manager currently plying their trade in the PL.. 😛
What a loss to our club! I wonder what the pardew out neggas have to say about that! 😛

      (Quote)

  48. Aussie, Certainly going to be interesting if he arrives, just hope he can handle the pressure as it’s a very different league. All the same plenty of foreign coaches have adapted here so hopefully he’ll be fine . Perhaps he can twist Jabbas hand on the pressing CB and forward issue 😉

      (Quote)

  49. Aussie – Have you seen Lyon play?

To play Devils advocate here but I always thought Lyon use to win the French league, had the best players and had a good youth system but when I saw Garde’s record over his last three years it was something like 3rd, 4th, 5th. What is the reason why their form has dipped from winning the league often before Garde was appointed to finishing at best 3rd?

      (Quote)

  50. Is Terry Venables a Chelsea fan?, I only ask as he was watching us play Chelsea yesterday and I would of thought he would of gone to the Spurs match. Not that I’m worried Jabba would be daft enough to hire someone who’s been out of management for yonks like.

      (Quote)

  51. Stuart..nah mate…just going off french fan opinions and what some pundits have stated.. if he tries to get us playing free flowing football I won’t be bagging him out if we drop points.. I want to at least be a bit entertained when I watch us play. Do you? Please don’t say its the players mate..Pardew wouldn’t know attractive football if he tripped over it in the tunnel on the way out on to the pitch!

      (Quote)

  52. Firstly Aussie, are you going to try and answer my question about Lyon’s form since Garde took over?

      (Quote)

  53. Hitman – I doubt we’d be talking to Garde if that happened and I doubt it would be on Twitter either. A shame all the same.
