Next in line!

Forget the cup. Forget Pardew. The only question of any importance for me at the moment is who will be the next manager, or should that be head coach?
Working within what we see as the main parameters of the job – and whether they are true or not is irrelevant for this exercise – which appear to be centred on budget constraints for new players and personal wage demands, who do you want next, and why?
The internet is full of shortlists for the job, so you should have no end of options available to you. I would imagine just about every possibility has been mentioned somewhere.
Having googled my way through many many of them, my vote goes to Lucien Favre.
I know almost nothing about the guy other than what I’ve read on the internet, but he may well fit the bill: he understands the head coach role, works with limited resources, works with young guys, plays a fast counter-attacking kind of football which would take Pard … er … the tactics of the last guy we had, to that coveted new level. He speaks French and English and has had some success with moderate sides.
I have no idea what his wage demands would be so it’s pointless me making any comments there, but perhaps a lucrative incentive package might help smooth the path.
So, for the sake of getting another thread running, throw your hat in the ring (rather than talking through it) …

You will never hear Colo speak now-a-days. he spoke fluent English with a strong Sunderland accent after he was taught by a Mackem for 4 years. He was ribbed so much in training he’s turned mute. really sad story actually but true…

  2. And there is a suggestion that former Arsenal midfielder Garde, who stepped down as boss of Lyon at the end of last season to take a sabbatical, would prefer to wait until the summer before taking up the role.

plenty points to keep us in the Prem. I’d rather make the right choice even if we had to wait..

  4. It’s probably that all potential coaches were looking at are wanting to wait until the summer to see if something better comes up. Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be too difficult to find something… : 🙁

  5. Why the hell would he not take the job now? Surely it has to be paper talk, I could understand it a bit with De Boer but it’s not like Garde is doing much really. Even with De Boer, kinda shows they aren’t jumping at the chance to manage us, which is a shame.

So Swansea have almost tripled their money on Bony then, not bad business, be interesting to see who they bring in. He was worth a punt but sadly we missed out on a player who would definitely have suited us, and most importantly, made a profit. Speculate to accumalate Mike 🙂

  6. Mark, I don’t agree mate, we had more points this time last season and look how close we came to dropping. It’s awful tight between 17 and 10th place at the moment and we got some tricky games coming up. We are rudderless at present, they need to make a statement pdq, either to say we have a new coach or that Carver has it or has it until summer. The latter would be unwise because the players won’t know for sure who the next coach will be and it could well unsettle them. I for one will not be comfy until we reach 38/40 points. I get the feeling they will let this drag on all month until the window ends, it’s the perfect cover for not signing anyone other than a loan and it’s foolhardy in the extreme if they do that imo.

but as hitman says, probs DM bullshit

  8. MM I agree with you on Collo apart from that crappy sound clip that the pleasant mr Prem put up I have never heard him speak.
For a so called Club captain you would imagine he would do more like most other captains

  9. Lads and lasses, thanks for the engagement there regarding my post concerning Collo. Can’t really understand why so much venom from Premandup it’s probably the frustration from Pardew deserting us has perhaps gotten to him ? 🙁

Maybe there is an issue with Collo’s sponsors or something which prevents him from speaking about the toon, but as a talisman captain he really his pretty much under the radar.
There again, I live abroad, so maybe the people living in the UK see and hear a lot more for him, or perhaps he is more visible on the clubs web site ? I’ve never seen the bloke give an interview after a live game ala Cisse, Dummet or Krul..

  10. No MM, that’s not the reason.
First off apologies as Kim says at 1200 it was a bit harsh.
I was reacting to what looked like yet another slagging off of our club. In this case our captain. So I thought I check the facts. Type Coloccini interview english into Google and up pops an interview. So I post it and you start slagging me off. “Is that the best I can do?” So I overreacted.

Your point that he doesn’t do enough since is our captain is valid.

  11. MM I live in the UK so no you havent missed owt, unless I have missed him doing post match stuff on MOTD or Sky but I dont think I have, but i’m sure if I have I will be put right 😉

  13. I see Lazacette is scoring goals for fun. To think we wouldn’t pay £12.5m for him. Great example of why we are going nowhere.

      (Quote)

  14. Stu, Yeah 2 again today, he won’t come to us now, he’ll either stay and play CL footie with them or go to a big club outside France. Even if we got Garde there is no chance of Lacazette joining the likes of us, we have missed that ship for sure. Short sighted by Jabba not going for him before, same as the Bony issue.

2 IS IT TIME TO TAKE THE SHACKLES OFF FOR REMY CABELLA?

Whatever John Carver told Remy Cabella before he ran out at Stamford Bridge, it worked a treat in the first half.

It was just a shame that it unfolded shooting towards the Chelsea fans and away from home, because if Cabella can produce that at St James’ Park any Geordie fan knows it will raise the roof.

Carver said: “If he performs like that then he can get our fans on the edge of their seat.”

Chief scout Graham Carr does not sign players he does not believe can light the stage at St James’.

But Alan Pardew, obssessed with tracking back and defensive discipline, could not get a tune out of Cabella.

Carver clearly told Cabella to go out and do what he does best and make a menace of himself.

His swerving runs were a sight for sore eyes as he cut through the Chelsea defence, made chances and won free-kicks. He was like a slalom skier at times.

Yet one fantastic run that saw him weave his way down the touchline and get chalk in his boots even had the Special One drooling.

More of the same please Messrs Carver and Cabella.

  16. Premandup @1217, don’t worry about it mate. Apology accepted.

I wasn’t trying to wind you up by the way, maybe the use of the term “mate” can be misconstrued .. not sure how though.

Judging by the few responses which I provoked we all come to the conclusion that as Capitano Collo is really low profile for a “big club” like the toon, where the fans eat, sleep and drink NUFC. I’m pretty sure that the whole reticence scenario at NUFC from Ashley, Charnley Collo downwards only made the situation worse.. Of course Pardew stepped up to the plate and enthusiastically filled the void of silence..and in the end at lot of punters got fed up listening to his blather and soundbites..

Collo as captain gets off scot-free at the end of the day… We are probably the only club in the EPL where the captain keeps his kisser firmly shut 🙂 ..

  17. Stuart79@1223, Southampton really did look a tough nut to crack. Next week will be a real test, although having witnessed our first half against Chelsea I’m strangely optimistic. Don’t know why really !

That’s why although it aint gonna happen I would love to see De Boer at the toon. The cloggy’s are always good, no matter what they do, and at Ajax they are building a fantastic group of winners working in the background, a bunch of ex players are there I believe, a bit like the dynasty at FC Bayern… Ronald Koeman and both of the De Boer brothers Frank and Ronald were great players, obviously Frank is doing well as a manager too..

  18. I think I’ll go on the Guardian web site and take the pinkle out of the Mancs… 😈 😈 😈 😈 I know what Louis Van Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal is capable of, I watched it transpire at FC Bayern. The bloke has a max 3 year shelf life then has to move on… thats assuming that the Mancs don’t take to his bumptuous abruptness and hound him out beforehand… I would imagine the toon fans would be like pussycats compared to scorned red devils fans, especially with City bossing Manchester for the last few years..

  19. Colo doesn’t manage well any more with a poor partner like Willo. Any normal club would have taken care of this deficiency long ago. But we still sit on our hands. It’s ridiculous. The remainder of the season is going to be a tough struggle in my opinion with not enough goals in the side and a porous defense. What does Ashley expect to happen? I think he just wants us to stagger through it and finish somewhere around 12th to 15th. That’s probably what we’ll do as well. Boring Ashley. Useless lack of ambition.

      (Quote)

  20. Southampton were brilliant defending the lead today. They looked totally calm and collected. ManU never looked likely to draw even. I have to say I loved watching the Mancs have another loss shoved down their throats.

  21. Sounds like we’re in for an excellent footy match against the Saints next week. It’s nice to see the Saints emerging from the dolldrums after so many years. They were always one of the better mid table clubs who had fallen into oblivion for various reasons..
A bit like the toon could have done if it weren’t for Ashley’s money 😉

  25. Dave, aye, I said that earlier mate. Perfect cover for not being active in the transfer market this window. If they don’t address the burning CB and forward issue we could be in serious trouble .

  28. The scary thing is it is the 11th of Jan and we don’t even have any transfer targets mentioned except a winger. There is the small matter of a new manager but you think they would have had their ducks in line if we were looking for CB and CF? I have heard Ings because of his contract situation but that seems far fetched.

  29. I suppose it is not unprecedented for NUFC to buy someone out of the blue – Gouffran, Santon, Perez?

  30. We still have the same three centre backs as we had when we were in the Championship… Is that progress?

      (Quote)

  31. Kim I don’t want to sound over ambitious here but does it really take another week to find a manager ? He can either say yes/no. I would be happy if we just get a centre back in. Williamson needs upgrading and STaylor made of glass. Just to freshen the back four slightly. I would rather have some top class winger LW and RW instead.

      (Quote)

  32. Stuart79 no it dangerous mate. The day will come when Colocini and Williamson leave and who’s going to replace them ?

  33. The trouble with buying french players is they need time to adjust to the premiership. Two defenders adjusting to this league could get us relegated.

  34. Now there are reports that Garde wouldn’t want the job until the summer. Christ, does anyone want the gig now apart from JC?

    How the mighty have fallen.

      (Quote)

  35. I wouldn’t mind Carver getting the gig game by game until the end of the season. I was impressed by them at Chelsea. At least whilst we are safe give him an opportunity. It’s not as if there’s a top manager walking over hot coals to take the job.

I don’t mind if he’s ugly, angry and shyte. I know Betsy cares about that but I don’t.

  37. Haha. Betsy. You and Mad Eric Psycho sing from the same hymn sheet. Easy to get you mixed up. 😉

I just think Carver should be given a chance until the end of the season to see what he can do. The players obviously like him. That is of course, there’s not a manager lined up that is going to play better football than Pards, entertain us and get better results.
You did bleat on fir this for 4 yrs but I’m yet to see light on the horizon.

  38. Eric Sykes – It is interesting indeed and if we get a new manager in soon, then hopefully our great scouting network are fully aware of these players available for free and they can agree on bringing at least a couple of these in.

A lot of French players available so Garde may approve.
