Changing of the Garde!

To be totally honest I do not know what to believe when it comes to who will be our next manager. On one hand we have Remi Garde who seems to be the odds on favourite at the moment but there are conflicting reports about whether he will start straight away or at the end of the season.

Will he or won't he?
Will he or won’t he?

So there is some media confusion around his appointment. You can’t help but feel that they are clutching at straws due to the secretive way the club goes about its business.

There are also reports that three other candidates that have been interviewed as well. Once again, how true this is, I am not so sure, at least the report is a positive one. We have had a number of managers rule themselves out of the role lately so its nice to hear that a few candidates are interested. Mind you I am glad that the likes of Bruce and Hoddle have ruled themselves out. It was nice of them to do so even though there was a good chance that club was never interested in them in the first place!

Now we have the special one saying that John Carver should get the job after our game against Chelsea. It is is a glowing endorsement, it is not often Jose compliments a manager other than himself! Nothing personal against Carver but I think we need a clean break from the coaching team we have had for the past four years. It’s time for some fresh ideas and coaching .

So if I were to pick from the candidates that we have been linked with, I would be choosing Remi Garde. To me, he feels like a good fit for the players we have. For those who are unaware of his record here it is.

Games played -117

Games won – 60

Games drawn – 26

Games lost – 31

Win percentage 51.28%

Not a bad record in anyone’s language but whether he can translate that kind of success to the premier league is anyones guess.

So as it stands Remi Garde is the one to take us forward but I don’t doubt for a second that we may sign someone else from out of the blue. One thing that the Ashley era has taught us is that nothing is certain until the dotted line has been signed. I just hope we can get that signature sooner rather than later no matter who it may be. Uncertainty around leadership never bodes well no matter what environment you ply your trade in. So hopefully Charnley is working hard behind the scenes to get the deal done. Until then, I guess all we can do is wait and speculate!

  1. Essentially, Sharpy you’re saying we have one of the most ridiculously lob sided squad in the league.

  2. So I see Paul Jewell has resigned from WBA after only a week. Wonder if he’s had a job offer from somewhere ❓ ❓

    Wouldn’t he be a typical Ashley appointment…

      (Quote)

  3. lol Ive been saying Paul Jewell all along. he’s a rough diamond, lets get behind him 😆

  4. I really don’t mind the time that they are taking getting a new head coach in, but it would be good to see something positive in the meantime like – either a new signing or 2 or the likes of Aarons & Sammys contracts get sorted.
If the head coach is to have no say on transfers or players remaining then the 2nd 2 things could still be worked on.
The results haven’t been going our way recently so the club could do a lift about now I reckon.

      (Quote)

  5. Sharpy – The club have needed a lift for the past 7.5 years so don’t hold your breath for one now.

  6. if we don’t get any new appointments this window, Coach or players than the protests need to start. we’re a bunch of mugs at Newcastle.

We need to crank up the pressure on Ashley. 👿

      (Quote)

  7. Stu – I wouldn’t have went that far mind, but you’re right, I won’t be holding my breath either.

What did you mean about lop sided squad mate?

‏@KHeneage Defoe for Altidore + cash is done (via @TSN_Sports) Amazed #SAFC caved and paid cash on top of Altidore to get Defoe. Big pressure on him.

      (Quote)

  9. Just that you mentioned players who are getting older, no experience or just ***** in your statement above.

      (Quote)

  10. How much for Defoe? He’ll probably keep them up this season, but he can’t have much more left in the tank, and meanwhile that’s a big chunk of any transfer budget gone. Wow.

As for us, I’m just looking at where the 13 points we need will come from. if we’re lucky, Saints won’t ring their ‘A’ game after extra-time and penalties this evening and we can get a point on Saturday…

      (Quote)

  11. GTE – Listening to the Sunderland supporters the only thing they’re missing is goals and that’s what Defoe will bring so they might be quite happy to ‘blow’ their kitty on the one thing they need.

In fairness that’s why our transfer policy is flawed as it restricts who we can bring in where as other teams are happy to bring in any player who will help them achieve their ambitions – however limited them ambitions are. Ashley will be looking at us thinking we are achieving our ambitions so in his mind we won’t need to bring anyone else as it might only push us up the league by 2 or 3 places. Ashley will ask, what the point in that is for an extra £10m. If we were really building slowly he would see it as a long term improvement too but he doesn’t.

      (Quote)

  12. Stu – get ya. Yeah that’s certainly how I see our striking options anyway, but actually the same could be said about our CB options at the moment. Hardly great for the spine of the team.

Kim – I read that Sunderland are paying around £14m and paying Defoe 80k p/w for a 32yr old 😯
That may be different if Altidore is part of the deal like.

I also saw the MYM article too, smart move by Roma I say. But I’d be interested to know if he has any recall clause in his contract now Pardew has gone.

      (Quote)

  13. Pretty sure Defoe will help keep them up. what ever they paid for him or his wages is of little consequence really as survival will be paramount due to the rich rewards on offer. The future re-negotiated TV deal looks to be eye watering,( I posted details the other day) and every club will be desperate not to miss out and move heaven and earth to secure their place. Apart from us that is who seem to think we can do it on the cheap 🙄

      (Quote)

  14. Kim – That’s the problem with Ashley’s model and attitude. You get away with it for a while but sooner or later he will have pissed off just about every other club so they will start doing the same.

      (Quote)

  15. Kim – wages wise I agree, if he gets them the goals to move them up the league – particularly when each higher position carries greater reward. My initial thought was if it is £14m, then that’s excessive. But when you consider the fee for McCormick and Shane Long for example – maybe not. But at 32 for a striker who has depended on his pace, I would think his contribution may be short lived. If he was 30 and they were going to get 2-3 good seasons out of him for that money then I could understand it.

I agree with Stu, and have posted on here many a time about our transfer policy being all wrong. Having the experience of older players in the squad and team buys time for younger ones coming through. I’m not talking throughout the team, but in certain positions it would make sense. In the summer for example, I was making a case for signing Lescott on a free – better than Saylor and Willo (IMO), would have been good for a couple of seasons, by which time the likes of Satka, Streete and Good would be ready to take over.

      (Quote)

  16. bit worrying that teams below us are looking to bring players in to make them stronger for the last half of the season, and we arnt..the troll might be reet about relegation fodder

      (Quote)

  17. One thing keeps playing on my mind. Probably unreasonably but it was Graham Carr being spotted at Blackpool’s game last week. Lee Clark hasn’t been seriously mentioned but nothing would surprise me with this lot of cheaper than chips.

Where’s the bloody centre half we desperately need?

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy @321, All good points, but I still think it’s a good buy for them, I don’t see them struggling to win games now, mind you they didn’t struggle against us even without him 🙄 Got to agree with Hitman@322, all the teams below us are bringing guys in to try and ensure safety while we waste time looking for a coach . If Jabba thinks we are already safe then that cocky attitude is very likely to see us sink.

      (Quote)

  19. Or even deader! Must be the snow Kim or else everyone’s bored to fck with the endless speculation circumnavigating the same iceberg. I blame Pards!

      (Quote)

  20. Georgio, It’s sad that we have nowt to engage us, no chance or sniff of any in coming players, just press rumours of outgoings or loose tongued players declaring love for bigger clubs 🙄 🙁 . As for new manager talk that’s no different to the lack of transfers really.

      (Quote)

  21. Georgio, We only got a light dusting here overnight, got storms and high winds coming tonight apparently. Christ a I really talking weather in the middle of the transfer window 🙄 😆

In other news my home town team face West Ham in the cup, oh the irony, I gave up on City years back for the lack of ambition and foul ownership and constant selling of best players. 🙄

      (Quote)

  22. KIM I think some bloggers are sick of some people going over the same **** time and time again wanting a answer to **** or ripping others views just imo like but other sites seem to have gained some bloggers I see, strange,if your talking weather how’s lewis?

      (Quote)

  23. Ice, Agree mate as soon as a new article goes up it soon becomes the same old argument 🙁 Think it’s partly due to the lack of effort on the part of the club, there is sod all to debate .Lew is a bit better thanks Ice but it takes him ages to get over a virus. He’s given it to me now the ******, still rather me than him . I been reading Eds blog a bit more lately but not commented on there, prefer this one when it’s lively tbh.

      (Quote)

  24. Ice, I bet the fans are **** a hoop, they know he’ll get them the goals to stay up.
Pity our owner doesn’t get us the defender and forward to ensure we do too.

      (Quote)

  25. KIM re-our owner,I love everybody,some I love to be around,some I love to
avoid, some iI would love punch in the bloody mouth

      (Quote)

  26. Stuart79@340, yeah, didn’t you know, we’ve brought in Ayoze Perez and Riviere 😉 …take your pick 🙂

      (Quote)

  27. Hitman@341, is that the same Collo who has tried so hard to gtf from the toon over the last 3 years, despite him being our capitano and paid a **** load of money ?
Aye, you’re right, you couldn’t make it up 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  28. Looks like we’re saddled paying Ben Arfa’s salary for the rest of his contract.
Another foux pas somewhere along the line ? 😕

The radgies at the toon contribute to an oversight which costs the club tens of thousands, yet can’t get the bairns signed up for a few dollars more..

I suppose Roma will be wondering whether or not to play Mbiwa for the 20th game…or let him sit tight. Could be a bit uncomfortable for Mbiwa ?….maybe they will send him back to the toon…a bit like Ben Arfa’s contract being curtailed at Hull ?

      (Quote)

  29. MM at 344 so it’s not surprising the club fuked up on their due diligence 😉 .

Hitman the same guy that convinced them to take his mate that cant even get on the bench 😆

      (Quote)

  30. Munich, I thought the club cancelled his contract? Pretty sure we aren’t paying his wages, he just wont be getting any cause hes not at a club, which ain’t our problem. Getting mapou back are we? Well we are desperate, id rather play dummet in the centre but beggers can’t be choosers. Defoe will keep scum up and altidore is worthless so not bad business tbf.

      (Quote)

  31. If Aslhley goes to the end of the window without hiring a new “head coach” and then appoints Carver and doesn’t bring in any players it means he is finished with us in the summer. That would be good news indeed.

      (Quote)

  32. He will start to panic in late February and March as we slide steadily down the table but he thinks we have just enough points to escape relegation He knows his methods don’t work and he’ll get caught out eventually and get us relegated so he will sell up in the summer.

      (Quote)

  33. It’s simply a matter of money. He will bail on us before he can relegate us again and lose more money. And those are all my thoughts for the day. Carry on mates. 😀

      (Quote)

  34. Stuart79@345 … no mate, that’s a yes 😉

    Big D 😆 😆 😆 some signing that bloke was wasn’t he 😥 😳 😳 😳

Newkie, I hope so mate…we don’t wanne be carrying HBA on his wedge…hope the contract has been cancelled…though most probably his contract with Nice has also been declared null and void… btw I was just summising a bit with Mbiwa…he is still wors at the end of the day, until he makes his 20th appearance that is..

      (Quote)

  35. Munich-yeah pretty sure it was straight up cancelled like Ranger and Bartons mate. Fair play to Roma its probably a cheeky attempt at a haggle, especially as were supposed to be paying most of the wages. The sale of mapou might have meant funds for a defender but now? Hmm..

      (Quote)

  36. Firstly, Munich, how many goals have Riveire and Perez scored between them? Not as many as Ba, so the answer is no we haven’t replaced him.

Secondly, I see the players are off to Dubai after the Southampton game for a wamt weather training camp as we’re out of the FA Cup. Does that sound like a club who’s going to appoint a new coach/manager?

John Carver’s Black and White Army… Oh dear the form book strikes again. 😯

      (Quote)

  37. Stuart79@354, Riviere and Perez maybe did replace Ba. They just haven’t scored as many goals as him yet.

There again, you probably knew the answer to your own question when you posed it. What kind of answer did you expect 😉

      (Quote)

  38. Riv replaced shola I think. There was no intention to replace ba, but thankfully Perez has turned out to be a gem. I still think we need a centre back most of all. And rather the another striker id be tempted to get a winger and ship out Jonas, oba etc

      (Quote)

  39. warm-weather training 😈 bunch of tossrs

A good display of passion this week in the FA cup. make u fking sick. I hope season ticket holders really re-evaluate their position next year. we can’t keep feeding this fat ***** or we’ll never get rid of him

      (Quote)

  40. so anything happened to the 5 interviews that we’ve held this week? Ashleys probably paid a reporter to release some rumors and we havent even spoken to potentials…

      (Quote)

  41. Keep the heads up lads. This season is building up to another disastrous finish as with last season. Ashley has completely lost the plot as usual. If we sink rapidly down he’ll wake up again but it will be too late. Just scraping by won’t cut it anymore with the supporters. At least I hope it won’t.

      (Quote)

  42. Wanyama and Schneiderlin are both out for Saturday. That might give us a chance, plus they really did not play well against Man U. I don’t know which game the pundits watched but on my TV they were overrun.

      (Quote)

  43. @Eric

Southampton played totally resilient throughout. ManU had Mata, Di maria, rooney and Persie with only 3 at the back. S’ton had nearly the same shots but more on target.. 1 😛

thats 3 players out unless Alderweireld recovers.

      (Quote)

  44. Tim Krul urges Newcastle United board to come up with some clear decisions 😯 looks like Kruls wanting out 😀

As if the fat tw**s gonna listen to Krul, he doesnt even listen or speak to his parents.

      (Quote)

  45. Mark: Mata missed an open net from four yards. Man U’s final ball was terrible and they snatched at everything. They created a ton of chances and on any other day would have won easily. But, that’s over and I am just glad that an opponent has some injury problems because we seem to have had so many.

      (Quote)

  46. I heard we booked the Dubai trip while Pards was still here. Probably got better deals on the flight and hotel. 🙄

      (Quote)

  47. Well I was at graft last night and work with a couple of mackems. They are not buzzing about the Defoe deal at all and from what they were saying (being in Facebook n blogs themselves) is that seems to be the general feel throughout.
A very short sighted deal for a massive fee for them.

I went in expecting to get it rammed down my throat – yous haven’t got a manager and aren’t signing players – we get Defoe type of thing. Far from it – they were waiting for me to take the **** as it happened.

      (Quote)

  48. Sharpy – Most would wait until they know whether they’d still be in the FA Cup. Of course knew that answer…

      (Quote)

  49. So we will wait until the end of Jan to appoint carver which means we dont have to sign anyone 😕 😕

    Predictable yet highly frustrating 👿 👿 👿
