Changing of the Garde!

To be totally honest I do not know what to believe when it comes to who will be our next manager. On one hand we have Remi Garde who seems to be the odds on favourite at the moment but there are conflicting reports about whether he will start straight away or at the end of the season.

Will he or won't he?
Will he or won’t he?

So there is some media confusion around his appointment. You can’t help but feel that they are clutching at straws due to the secretive way the club goes about its business.

There are also reports that three other candidates that have been interviewed as well. Once again, how true this is, I am not so sure, at least the report is a positive one. We have had a number of managers rule themselves out of the role lately so its nice to hear that a few candidates are interested. Mind you I am glad that the likes of Bruce and Hoddle have ruled themselves out. It was nice of them to do so even though there was a good chance that club was never interested in them in the first place!

Now we have the special one saying that John Carver should get the job after our game against Chelsea. It is is a glowing endorsement, it is not often Jose compliments a manager other than himself! Nothing personal against Carver but I think we need a clean break from the coaching team we have had for the past four years. It’s time for some fresh ideas and coaching .

So if I were to pick from the candidates that we have been linked with, I would be choosing Remi Garde. To me, he feels like a good fit for the players we have. For those who are unaware of his record here it is.

Games played -117

Games won – 60

Games drawn – 26

Games lost – 31

Win percentage 51.28%

Not a bad record in anyone’s language but whether he can translate that kind of success to the premier league is anyones guess.

So as it stands Remi Garde is the one to take us forward but I don’t doubt for a second that we may sign someone else from out of the blue. One thing that the Ashley era has taught us is that nothing is certain until the dotted line has been signed. I just hope we can get that signature sooner rather than later no matter who it may be. Uncertainty around leadership never bodes well no matter what environment you ply your trade in. So hopefully Charnley is working hard behind the scenes to get the deal done. Until then, I guess all we can do is wait and speculate!

  1. Injuries starting to bite for Southampton; Had a sneaky feeling for us for saturday anyway but certainly without Shneiderlin, Wanyama, Alderwereld, Yoshida and Mane

IMO Theres no reason why we cant get on a run again looking at our next month or so

  2. I’d agree with that, CC – back end of the season we have a decent run-in, (last 6 games all winnable), and the next run of games is also kind…bit of a bar steward run in between, so if we can pick up anything like decent points in the next month we can expect to finish top-half. Drop too many points under Carver and we’ll limp to the end of the season. A lucky win on Saturday would be a good start.

  3. There’s no easy games in the premier league. I wouldn’t say that we have won any of our games comfortably this season. Our best score line has was 2-0 against West brom and they certainly played well enough to get something out of the game.

Cisse’s on african cup of nation’s duty. We our still struggling with Colo and Willo at the back. Trying to find a new manager which is taking forever and an owner in hiding because the transfer windows reopened. Things look very grim at the moment. The word no ambition springs to mind and as a reward for getting knocked of the cup they get a nice holiday for the second year running.

  4. So were delaying appointing someone who will have no say on transfers to avoid making transfers

I like Lineker but hes talking utter bollocks

It wouldnt surprise me in the least if we didnt sign Niang and/or Munoz before a head coach

  5. I’d like Cabella to get the same freedom as he did against Chelsea personally. Then, I would consider dropping Gouffran for either Rivière or Armstrong. I’m not bashing Goof coz he works hard, but he is no goal threat this season from what I’ve seen of him. Colback & Sissoko will chip in with afew goals from midfield. Perez is doing his bit and I think it’s only a matter of time for Cabella. I think we should give Riv or Armaz a chance.

  6. Yao Carver says we could know about the head coach by the Hull game which just so happens is about at the end of the transfer window… Mmm…

In other news I see Jabba has offered to loan Rangers £10m as long as they offer up Ibrox and their training complex as security. He’s lrobably using the money were paying him back to bank roll Rangers.

Ashley is like no other football club owner I have ever met. He doesn’t give money, he loans it. He see’s clubs as business’ and we for that reason his football clubs will never be successful football clubs. NUFC for instance is 70% reliant on the TV money. We have very little other substantial income as he has shrunk everything else.

He’s the enemy to football and he needs to go! How the PL can say he’s a fit and proper football club owner is beyond me.

      (Quote)

  7. hes after the land ibrox is on,thats why he wants sd on the ibrox deeds.if it all goes tits up for rangers sd will have the land and will build a massive sd depot on it.

  8. Stu@387, Totally agree, he is a modern day mountebank, you just need to substitute the quack medicines for sports tat. In my humble opinion he is a deceiver of grotesque proportions where the Toon are concerned and little more than a school ground bully with his business tactics. He is vile and the behemoth of all my nightmares. 👿

“It wouldnt surprise me in the least if we didnt sign Niang and/or Munoz before a head coach”.

I’m not sure if that’s a double negative or not?! – do you think we will sign those players or won’t?.

  12. CC – I thought you were being quite specific to those 2 players 😆
I think Munoz would be a good signing, but Niang looks a bit similar to Sammy to me. Also, if Roma are sending MYM back, do you think they will be looking to sign a CB now? – I hope so coz I like the idea of MYM and Munoz replacing Willo and Saylor.

  13. KIM at last (I think) people are starting to twig that jabba just does not care about football (fans) or history of clubs he only sees it as a means of making money,I don’t think he is a fit person to own a football club, there is only one way to shift the fat greedy git and that is to boycott the club/clubs.but Ime afraid it won’t happen

      (Quote)

  14. Ice@398, Agree, I’m afraid we are not Newcastle United more un united 🙁 As long as fans flock to the stadium and line his pockets and help advertise SD with full stadium he won’t go anywhere sadly. This guy understands one thing only, money. There should be match boycotts and his stores should be targeted too. Cause as much disruption to his business as possible, it’s the only way. For all the Toon fans who still think he is our saviour, I would like them to tell me why Rangers fans are so opposed to him getting involved with their club. Truth is they and everyone in football has watched what’s happened at Toon and now realise what a conman he is. They are gonna do their damndest to stop him because they have the benefit of seeing what’s next.

      (Quote)

  15. KIM toon fans have always be the same they flock to SJP no matter what even years gone bye people making millions from the fans in one way or the other as my old dad said put 11monkeys on the pitch with black/whitesshirts on the fans will turn up,KK got it dead right when he said toon fans turn out because its their weekend entertainment like cockneysgo to the theatre toon fans go to the game! sadly I don’t think it will change

  16. Ice, I understand it in a way, the back the team not the regime thing, yet how much **** do people want to suffer before they say enough. 😕

      (Quote)

  17. We don’t want any more suffering. Let’s strike back. We need sack Ashley posters for everyone going to a home game.

  18. KIM its got me beat mate,I can only speak for my self and a few mates,as a young guy I was playing the game myself so mid-week games I went to,but we used to say wait until next year we will be good, the club would make one big signing to con us back again year in year out it went like that, but if we saw a good game it kept you going for another week, another thing that beats me is players/managers twisting about the amount of games they have to play, chirst years ago it was nothing to play more than 60 games a season, rant over lol

  20. Just looking at Lazacette’s record this season and the value that Lyon have put on him now. What a joke! We wouldn’t increase our offer to €15m apparently and now he’s probably worth an additional €5/€10m and will likely increased as he looks like a top class player.

Just another reason why our transfer policy is bollocks!

      (Quote)

  21. KIM I see you had loaned him,not dishing him but that’s about his top level imo, hope he helps to push them on

  22. Icedog: when Carver “rested” Ayoze for the FA Cup he had played in 14 games. That same weekend Alexis Sanchez had already played 34 times for club and country. As much as the fake injuries that tells you that the club have no respect for the fans. Millwall are even refunding fans’ money for a bad way performance. There are 4300 fans who went to Leicester who may as well have gone to the theatre for all the entertainment they got – I have been dragged to many plays (no not pantos) and was usually praying for intermission so I could grab a few drinks to dull the senses.

  23. What is NUST saying about our lack of a head coach or manager? I haven’t heard much from them lately. It’s rapidly becoming another farce at the club. Wait til the end of the window to appoint someone so you don’t have time to bring in players. Absolute bollocks.

  24. ES don’t forget mate players back then played with a diff ball real bad pitches and didn’t have the medical guys they have now, best you could hope for was sponge and cold water its only the last 7/10 years the medical side has come to the fore, players now are soft shites everything is done for them

      (Quote)

  25. Stu – I think we could have met Lyons asking price and it wouldn’t have made a difference. Lacazette said he would only leave Lyon for a top club playing CL footy.

      (Quote)

  26. Ice, It was the sight of an infested sponge and ice cold water that made most players get straight back up 😆

      (Quote)

  27. G2: when have NUST ever done anything worthwhile? I don’t really follow what they do but those sorts of things are usually run by a bunch of well intentioned busy bodies. Occasionally, they will back a local businessman (usually “property developer”) who has some hare brained idea to take over the club and then it turns out they weren’t worth anywhere near the money they said they were and the “consortium” they put together had only raised a tenner.

  28. What is wrong with the Geordie nation? Putting up with this pox for 8 years now. You couldn’t run a club worse than this as far as ambition is concerned. I’m about ready to spit bullets.

      (Quote)

  29. G2, Well the club can’t have it both ways, if they want a coach rather than a manager then there are no excuses why no players cannot come in. It certainly won’t stop them selling any.

I met a fairy today who granted me one wish. “I want to live forever,” I said.
“Sorry,” said the fairy, “I’m not allowed to grant wishes like that.”
“Fine,” I said, “I want to die when the Toon win the premier league.”
“You crafty ****!” said the fairy.

  33. Agree with both of you ice and Kimtoon. The footy now from us is mostly dross. We get excited if we play a decent half! It’s bloody ridiculous. Local press gagged, can’t hire a manager, owner is an idiot. It goes on and on.

      (Quote)

  34. Ice, yeah, I got so much **** going on at the mo that I’m just letting it fly over me head where possible. It’s sad cause football has always been my relaxation and I can’t even bloody enjoy that now 🙁

      (Quote)

  35. So Carver says that by the Hull game it will have been a month since they started considering who will be new head coach.
Personally I think that’s more than enough time, and if there is a trip to Dubai arranged, then that is quality time for whoever it will to spend with the squad.

I have to be honest, whether Carver gets the job or not, you can see he loves the club and is desperate to do the best job he can possibly do for NUFC.

      (Quote)

  36. Sharpy – Every manager is desperate to do the best job they can do. I’m not sure it is the best attribute that the next manager should be based on. He will get the job because he’s cheap and will do it under any circumstance, not because he’s the best. Good luck to him though and I hope he does well but he will finish in an average league position.

      (Quote)

  37. Im sorry but can some one please provide the proof of Jabba lining his pockets with our cash?

Don’t bother looking for it because it isn’t happening. . If the fat controller is guilty of anything, it is he is not putting extra money in to help fund player purchases. To me he simply wants the club to run self sufficiently and within its means. The other area of guilt is the commercial revenue. . We are really weak in this area.. hate Ashley for being a tight wad with his money, not for lining his pockets with money..the club barely breaks even….

      (Quote)

  38. AMF: the things I have seen about finances are predictions for this year because the TV money has gone up so much and costs have remained the same, including wages. If we break even on transfers the extra TV money will be all profit (20-30 million?) plus Ashley gets free advertising for Sports Direct which could be going to the NUFC bottom line or transfers instead.

That is the explanation I have seen for Ashley bleeding the club. We won’t really know what is going on until the next set of results. Our finances are not much better than Stoke or Sunderland now because TV is so much of the revenue. If they invest in players and Ashley repays his loans there is the chance we will actually fall behind. I think that is what everyone fears.

I think everybody just wants to see some intent from Ashley that he wants us to progress. I thought he might want to watch better football since he was attending more games but the Leicester surrender has me doubting that anything will ever get better with him in charge. We need a manager who can make the whole better than the sum of its parts. Hopefully we will get lucky.

      (Quote)

  39. I have actually been impressed with Carver’s attitude. I still don’t think he is qualified, is tainted by Pardew and has to take some responsibility for set pieces. My fear is the silence means he is going to get until the end of the season with only two options – he is average and Ashley will take the cheap option and give him the job, or, we have another half season of **** football and flirt with relegation. I hope he surprises me though and he has a chance against a weakened Southampton and out of form Hull. If he gets results I am afraid that the selection duo will use that to justify him as temporary manager.

I totally disagree with him that these few games since Pardew bailed are a job interview. That he is saying this means he has learnt a line of BS from the master (Pardew). If Ashley sacked Hughton because he had supposedly taken us as far as he could, what would it say to appoint Carver?

      (Quote)

  40. So Ashley is bleeding the club dry based on a speculative guess on what the profit will be this season..how much is he actually taking out? Might as well have another guess on that as well! … unbelievable stuff… maybe every fan should stop watching the games on tele as that is where the real money is all coming from!

      (Quote)

  41. AMF: WTF. You totally misinterpreted what I said. I was giving an explanation of the reasoning some fans use to say Ashley will be taking all of the profits for himself. I have read on the Chronicle site wild speculation about 50 million profit this year. Read what I wrote @441 again.

I am not a conspiracy theory type. I think if we start to generate profits then Fatty will bank some but also try to build the club. It is in his best interests to do this whether he keeps it or sells it. I think if we could get a bit of success he might get excited again – FFS how much money does one man need 🙂

      (Quote)

  42. AMF: Here is what I said @441, you don’t even know when people are agreeing with you 🙂

“That is the explanation I have seen for Ashley bleeding the club. We won’t really know what is going on until the next set of results.”

You see, it is not my explanation, it is the explanation I have seen.

I don’t think there is a grand plan for Fatty to ruin NUFC and take over Rangers. I think he wants both as part of a grand plan to expand Sports Direct to Europe, Asia and the USA.

      (Quote)

  43. Ashley is bleeding us dry of transfer cash, commercial revenue, ambition, hope, passion and is severely testing my loyalty.

    I hate the fat f*** 😯

      (Quote)

  44. Eric..didn’t say you were the one who was saying those things, I was questioning the explanation. . Marks hatred is more accurate and worth while 🙂

      (Quote)

  45. This is what John Carver has said today:

“I will get an update about my position after the match. I’ll have a conversation with Lee before we go away.”

“I haven’t spoken to Mike but I had a good conversation with Lee. It hasn’t changed. The club has a process and you can appreciate this is a massive football club.”

“When I was managing in Toronto, one of the reasons why I came back was because I was trying to do it my way as in I was head coach looking after the football side of it, trying to progress the technical side and the match analysis.”

“Unfortunately they weren’t moving as quickly as I wanted them to and I got very frustrated.” “I will do it my way because I think that’s best.”

“I can understand why people may think I’m like the previous manager, because I’ve been working with Alan. But I’ve set the team up slightly different on the pitch, certainly against Chelsea you saw a slightly different performance.”

“I’ve done some things different on the team meetings, how I’ve worked with the players is slightly different. I am my own man. This is how I look at it is you live by the sword, you die by the sword.”

“If I don’t do it my way and I don’t get the job, then I’ll think ‘why didn’t I do it like that?” “I’m going to do it my way, and if I don’t do the job then at least I know I’ve done it my way.”

“I have had two of the best weeks of my life, because I’ve been able to get on with the football and not worry about anything else. I’ve been able to work with a group of players who have been absolutely outstanding.”

“They’ve listened to what I’ve said and they’ve bought into what I’ve tried to do.” “When you’ve had two weeks like I’ve had, it gives you that hunger to want to do it for the rest of your life.”

“It has absolutely whetted my appetite for it. “

      (Quote)

  46. Mark: he came back from Toronto because he had done a **** job with a 31% win ratio in a **** league. He has tried to spin this to the best of his ability. Pards would be proud.

      (Quote)

  47. Aussie – Can you not count? We haven’t spent a single penny on buying players as a club for the past 4 years. Every player we have bought has been financed by a player sale. So now we know that, where has the increased TV revenue gone? It’s gone up by circa £30m a year yet our expenditure has gone up anywhere near that – in fact I believe that’s come down.

    Do you need a calculator?
