Unfair-Lee treated?

After the announcement that John Carver was to be our caretaker manager until the seasons end, to be honest my first reaction was. Well at least a decision has finally been made! As underwhelming as the decision to stick with Carver is, it does however indicate that we have found our (unknown) man to take us forward next season. There is some fear that if Carver does really well, he will be kept on full time next season but I don’t think that is the case here.

A man to be trusted?
A man to be trusted?

Lee Charnley has not been in the hot seat long and he has a tough task to win back some trust from the clubs fan base. His predecessor Derek Llambias came across as a very astute financially sound business man but conversely, a really unlikable character with a cold disdain for the clubs fans .  He took gambles with player sales and held a tight leash on finances and over time his relationship with the fans descended into a seemingly hate/hate affair. There were no tears when Llambias announced his departure but there was some degree of skepticism when Lee Charnley was promoted from within the ranks of power. No one really seems to know much about the guy and he really hasn’t done much to improve this situation with the fans. However throughout his first transfer window I thought he did a good job of bringing players in and trying to get deals over the line. It was actually nice to see that we held off on letting Debuchy go until we had indeed sign cover for him. Maybe mistakes of the past were being heeded? Unfortunately we were still the missing a striker and the replacement for Mbiwa but I do believe that we were working on deals that could not be completed in time. Maybe if we were a little more relaxed with our purse strings it would not have happened, who knows? It would be hard to believe that transfer negotiations were a simple affair. These are still two areas of real concern and hopefully Lee can finally get it right.  This transfer window has been thrown into turmoil with the departure of Pardew and looks like being another fizzer. It is almost like torture as we wait for the striker and centre back we need and unfortunately I can see the torture continuing.

As far as Pardews replacement goes, I think we have got someone pre-signed and ready to go next season. I think Charnley knows how important this is and I reckon he will be doing his damnedest to get it right. Given the tight restraints that he has to work with, I think he is doing a good job and seems to be making the right noises. Charnley has really taken on a poisoned chalice of a role with in the club and it can’t be easy for him to operate under Ashley’s tough finacial model. But if he has his heart in the right place and tries the best he can to drive the club forward and bring back some exciting times then I am willing to cut him a little slack when things don’t turn out as they should. The new manager appointment will go a long way to see if my faith in him is right or misguided.

What are your thoughts?

  1. SHARPY no I would not put Santon in front of those players,in fact I feel quite let down by him after all the hype about him when he came, but that’s just how I feel about him,he does not float my boat,he might turn out a real good player but imo he hasn’t shown it at SJP

I wasnt referring to you but sections of our support in general who turn everything into a negative; Cisse coming back from the acon, De Jong, Aarons, Abeid & Obertan fit again, Dave Watsons promotion, Winning the other day because Carver might get the job ffs

I actually like Santon its a shame we didnt try him further forward but i can understand it from both points of view. He will want to play and hes well down the pecking order here, He gets a chance to join a great club and play in europe again. We get a decentish fee for a player on high wages and contract is up next year. We have Janmaat, Haidara, Dummett, Anita, Raylor & Good who can play full back

The Yanga Mbiwa one was daft this one isnt

  3. Ice – likewise mate. I wondered if he’d be better suited in that 3 man midfield, with Colback and Sissoko – but again, I wouldn’t put him ahead of Abied and Anita had a canny game against Hull (2nd half anyway).
It makes sense to move him on for me like, but it would have been good to get a CB that can cover LB in – but we just don’t know who is available to be fair.

De Jong playing a deeper role so far. Has had a couple of touches but still 1-0 to #nufc #wba

  5. CC – I would say that Jonas and Ferguson are also there to cover full back.

Kim – clearly Chloe doesn’t fancy Milan 😆

      (Quote)

  6. KIM it will be true that’s the way this club treat players (Jonas) and fans bits of meat to use the way “they”think to make money, the club is shameful, its getting to the stage where I don’t want to support this bunch of W—ers

  7. On her Twitter account, which has pictures of her with Santon, Sanderson wrote: “Just to put it out there, Davide declined Inter Milan’s first offer but was pushed out by Newcastle United to leave..”

And then in a series of tweets, she made a serious of digs against Newcastle.

Disgusted with how Davide has been treated, fully fit for a while now with no chance to play- a club whose only intentions are to make £££

More evidence of what a **** hole of a club we have become.

  8. Ice, she certainly ain’t happy like. Agree we are more like a retail shop nowadays, buy low sell high discount store 🙁

  9. We saw it with HBA and Marvauex in the summer. When the board see players who aren’t getting a game and earning reasonable money they will get rid of them. This is in my opinion the reason why the new coach will have no say in transfers. A reasonably minded coach would like to build a squad, NUFC don’t believe in squad strength.

      (Quote)

  10. Stu – as they should to be fair – and every club does it. Marv & Benny weren’t putting the effort in – Bruce confirmed that about Benny when he went to Hull.
Plenty on here so far today have said that Santon would be 3rd choice LB – yet he’d be getting paid more than Haidara and Dummett ahead of him.
Santon wouldn’t want to stop at Newcastle for footballing reason – we all know that the club lack ambition in comparison to Inter. He’d stay for personal reasons – coz of his missus and kid. Do we really keep hold of him to keep his lass sweet?.

      (Quote)

  11. You miss my point, Sharpy. How are we suppose to increase the quality of the squad if every time one of our better players doesn’t get a game we sell them? The whole point of having a good squad is that everyone is of a good quality. We just sell them if they are out of the team. I told everyone that the club just want youngsters to be back up for the first team and we will never improve.

      (Quote)

  12. Whether we agree or not, Santon had become 3rd choice at LB. As someone said above I was never overly impressed with and a bit disappointed to be honest. I think Hadeira should be getting the starts there

      (Quote)

  13. MDS, No ones disputing about him going it’s the fact that we ship out and we are still waiting on a CB for yet another season .

      (Quote)

  14. MDS – I would have no problems whatsoever selling him at the end of the season providing we brought in a couple of centre halves, it’s the timing of the whole thing! We have lost 3 defenders now this season and that’s from an already **** poor defence! It’s just gross mis-managment!

      (Quote)

  15. Palace have signed Zaha on a permanant deal I see. Wonder how they could afford him but we couldn’t. I really rate him and I suspect this transfer sums up perfectly why Pardew decided to leave NUFC for Palace.

    Team requirements come before profit.

      (Quote)

  16. I would also really like to say that this Santon situation is probably the reason why I don’t totally think that the coach having no say on transfers is a good thing. I can’t believe a coach would sanction Santons transfer looking at our defence today.

      (Quote)

  17. Stu – but there the problem. When you have a club who aren’t bothered about competing in cup competition or pushing for Europe – the need for strength in depth isn’t as great.
I have no issue with Santon going, but I agree it’s mismanagement and a CB who can cover LB coming in (even on loan) should have happened today.

      (Quote)

  18. We aren’t fine at LB for the rest of the season as Dummet is our first choice centre back along with Colo now. What would happen if Dummet and Hadaira were injured and they have both been injury prone this season?

      (Quote)

  19. Stu/MDS – or Jonas, Anita or Shane Ferguson would fill in at LB. Fullback wise we are fine, but CB wise we need to strengthen – but that’s hardly breaking news like 🙄

      (Quote)

  20. Raylor who is always injured, Jonas who is coming back from Cancer and Anita who is a midfielder!

The make do attitude is disgusting!

      (Quote)

  21. You only have to look at the season before Ashleys takeover to see the strength in depth we had at the back when the club was run properly; Carr, Ramage, Bramble, Babayaro, Saylor, Huntington, Moore & Onyewu

      (Quote)

  22. Sharpy exactly-or Satka, Good, etc in case of an extreme emergency….

Stu, seriously, get a grip. 4-5 non-youth players who have played FB for us in the past is absolutely plenty and well in line with what most clubs have.

      (Quote)

  23. OK, MDS. You be happy to ‘make do’ and waste yet another season. You will get the team you deserve.

      (Quote)

  24. Stu its not about being happy it’s about not losing my marbles when a 3rd choice LB leaves the club, or any player that is surplus to requirements for that matter. What, are we now suddenly going to go into free fall without Santon? Come on

  25. Virgin guy just gave me a new hub and got me an upgrade on bb speed, pity I can’t upgrade the Toon owner as easily.

      (Quote)

  26. santoon can play lb and rb,it dosnt matter if he was 3rd choice he can still do a job for us.letting him go with out getting someone in is just crazy.but this isnt a football club anymore its a buisness where profit and balancing the books comes first.

      (Quote)

  27. Losing my marbles? I am simply telling people why I don’t believe it’s a good idea at this time.

I have no problem selling a left back but when we have cover that won’t impact our performances. We have been desperate for a centre back since we got promoted yet we don’t buy one. We think Dummet will do the job but forget he is also our left back…

It’s about squad management and ours is **** poor. We do not ever think about what the team needs and when they need it.

      (Quote)

  28. As I said I agree that we need a CB. Willo simply isn’t a Premeir League starter and Collo is very inconsistent. I haven’t seen enough of Street, Satka, Good and Lascelles to comment on them.

      (Quote)

  29. One Journo has just summed up everything; So far this transfer window NUFC have sold Pardew for £3.5m, Mbiwa for £5.5 and got Santon off the wage bill. We are brilliant aren’t we… Just not at running a football team!

      (Quote)

  30. All our movement on deadline day is out I see. Much cheaper that way. Mike is on top of his game again. A mediocre club with a 3-0 victory and 3 points in the bag. Bigi going out as well? Surely it’s time for Raylor to retire in the summer as well as Jonas? Give Abeid some playing time JC.

      (Quote)

  31. Based on our activity in this window I’m very excited about the prospects of another mediocre season beginning next fall! Just think of it. A strong possibility we can finish between 10th and 14th again and go out of the cups early! It’s so exciting with Ashley in charge.

      (Quote)

  32. G2 – Don’t forget at this stage next season if we are in a similar position which I would say we are odds on, we will then let go a couple of purples who have been injured or can’t catch the team just to save some money on the wages. We might even sell a current playing purple. We don’t want to be above 10th do we now…

      (Quote)

  33. But just think of how good our books will look Stuart mate! It’s going to be beautiful looking at those profits! Mike is so excited. Money makes ze vorld go round, ze vorld go round. 👿

      (Quote)

  34. We took a real chance winning a couple of games in the league cup this season. It could have ended in disaster. Just imagine winning a cup and being forced to play in Europe. Horrible! Mike had nightmares for several days until we bowed out.

  35. Poor old SSN,what a **** deadline day so far, nowt but loan deals and rumours to keep repeating. Santons loan deal still on the breaking news bar since early morning 😆 . They must hate FFP rules wrecking their big day.

      (Quote)

  36. Several teams have improved though. Just not us. We don’t need to improve right Mike? I’m sure the Rangers supporters will love being mediocre like us. The lumps in the middle. Sissoko out the door in the summer. More bollocks from Charnley about sticking to the plan. Go get a job in a fish and chip shop Charnley and show them your brilliant business abilities.

      (Quote)

  37. Mike had nightmares the day we beat Man City that wasn’t suppose to happen. He got in his helicopter to visit Pardew and the players and told them they’ve had there cup run it’s okay if you lose.

      (Quote)

  38. Can’t believe we’re loaning Bigi and Vuckic. Sure by letting our 7th and 8th choice CMs go means we’re destined for a relegation scrap 😉

      (Quote)

  39. When will our next defensive collapse be? It won’t be too long to wait with only Willo and Colo available. But Charnley will just laugh it off as we sit somewhere around 11th or 12th. Then he’ll do nothing in the summer again except sell Sissoko. We’ll get Lascelles in and just carry right on being mediocre.

      (Quote)

  40. Two choices as I see it. Carry on supporting Ashley by going to home games or stop going and force the parasite out. Otherwise get used to being nothing better than mediocre or worse every season. We are the tat bin of football.

  41. The Beatles used to sing about toe jam football. Now we play it thanks to Ashley and friends.

  42. So the press are slagging off Newcastle because the MK Dons kid wants to stay down south…

The press are slagging off Newcastle because Santon’s girlfriend is pissed off that Newcastle wanted to offload him…

The press are slagging off Newcastle because Mike Ashley wants to use his Rangers connection to loan a few players from Newcastle to PLAY REGULAR FIRST TEAM COMPETITIVE FOOTBALL…

Typical bullshit day as a NUFC fan then…

  44. whats Santons lass bumping her gums aboot. what a load of poppycock. we’re only interested in making money 🙄

As decent as Santon is, he’s not going to be a massive loss. He’s injured quite a lot and think of the reserve bank we now have. I’m sure Mike will spend his money wisely…

      (Quote)

  45. Don’t worry TDS mate@663. We’ll show the press how clever we are by finishing in a proper mediocre fashion and taking in loads of money. Then we’ll do the same next year, and the year after that, and so on and so on. It’s going to be so exciting for true football supporters. Remember: we got monkey owner. He play toe jam football.

      (Quote)

  46. TDS – if I can correct you ever so slightly. It’s the press & Stu that are slagging Newcastle 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  47. Complaining that Newcastle “forced” Santon out. I don’t think she quite understands how football works…

Haidara is doing pretty well at left back at the moment and many fans have been crying out for him to be given a run for ages. Dummett can play there too of course so why keep Santon, paying him a big wage if he’s not first (or possibly even second) choice…

  48. GEORDIETWO

So sorry that you’d rather we yoyo between challenging for Europe and fighting relegation…I’ll take gradual growth thank you very much.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think I saw figures to say our revenue has now overtaken Everton’s. Stability and increasing revenue is excellent news for us to grow as a club and have future pushes for Europe.

But considering Man Utd, City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelski are likely to tie up the top 4 and one of the Europa League places virtually every season…it doesn’t leave much for us to target…

      (Quote)

  49. So you neggers…which of the managers you wanted to replace Pardew in the summer do you still wish we had in place of him?

Bruce? Poyet? Redknapp? Lambert? Hughton? Clarke? Mackay? Martinez? Jol? Pulis? Laudrup?

Makes me laugh…there’s not a shred of evidence that any of those managers are better than Pardew. And every one of them is either out of a job or managing a club below Newcastle now…

      (Quote)

  50. Ouch! You’ve cut me deep TDS mate @671. It’s the gradual growth bit I’m puzzled about. When did that happen? Or do you mean gradual growth of Ashley’s bank account? I see no money being put into the club. Did we sign someone this window that I’m unaware of?

      (Quote)

  51. Don’t mind the two young midfielders going. We’re pretty strong in numbers and quality in that position.

TDS – Did you really just say you’d take gradual growth? Can you show me where we have grown over the last 4 years? I mean on the pitch where it matters for a football club. If you say revenue then that is down to TV deal and everyone has got that money so it kind of dilutes the effect. At best we have gone backwards since finishing fifth and stood still since then apart from one close scrape with relegation.

I remember someone else saying we were growing and improving steadily about 7 years and we are in the same position now as we were then. It’s pityful. The club have no plan and no chance.

      (Quote)

  52. GEORDIETWO

No money is going out of the club to Ashley mate. Ashley’s bank account is different from NUFC’s bank account.

Ashley wouldn’t give a **** about taking a few million a year from the club for wages like his predecessors did. He’d like to build the club slowly and flog it for £400M as TV revenues grow.

Our squad is pretty good. Did you miss the result at the weekend?
