Crystal Palace v Newcastle game preview

Wednesday will see us traveling to Selhurst Park to face our old manager Alan Pardew.
Pards departed last month after four-years in charge at St James’ Park and has enjoyed a successful start in the Selhurst Park hotseat, winning three out of four games.
Talking about the game he said, “I’m not expecting or hoping for any reaction, We had some great times together. It was not so great the last year, but on the whole my experience there was great”.
“I thought I did a good job and walked out with my head held high, and so I’m looking forward to the game.
“I’ve still got all my staff there and my players, and they’re close to my heart.
“It will be strange because after four years after living every part of that football club and that city, good and bad, it’s emotional.
“It will be a slightly different game for me.”

Here’s hoping it is a different game for him and he will be smarting at his old team leaving Selhurst Park with all 3 points in the bag.
Newcastle have no fresh injury worries following our 1-1 draw against Stoke City on Sunday.
Midfielder Cheick Tiote was part of the Ivory Coast squad that claimed AFCON glory on Sunday, but is unlikely to feature having not appeared during the knockout stages of the tournament due to an ankle injury
Siem de Jong (thigh) and Rolando Aarons (hamstring) are targeting returns later in the month, while Rob Elliot (thigh), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Ryan Taylor (knee) also remain on the sidelines.

Crystal Palace will assess the fitness of Scott Dann after the centre-back went off with a head injury during Saturday’s 1-0 win at Leicester City, although Pardew offered warm praise for Brede Hangeland after he replaced the former Blackburn Rovers player at the King Power Stadium.
On-loan Arsenal forward Yaya Sanogo is pushing for a start having replaced Jordon Mutch at the break last time out. Captain Mile Jedinak remains a major doubt with an ankle problem.
Marouane Chamakh is set to return from a broken nose and Yannick Bolasie could offer a fresh boost to Palace’s attacking options after he helped the Democratic Republic of Congo finish third at the Africa Cup of Nations.

  1. Hopefully Dummett is back and will replace Willo. The other 2 changes I’d like to see is Abied for Anita and Cisse for Sammi.

Pardew will want to prove a point, and I just hope Carver sees it an opportunity to show his worth too. No room for sentiment until after the game IMO and if Carver wants to win some backing from fans, a win against Pardew would be a good start.

  2. Dave, Good preview mate, and you said you couldn’t do it 😯 . This will be a massive result if we win, Pards will have his lads well fired up for the win and they have home advantage too. He also knows our team inside out a luxury JC doesn’t have, really Pards holds all the aces tonight. If JC can mastermind a win then he’ll win over a lot of doubters for sure. Player for player we have nothing to fear other than they seem to be still going through the impress the coach stage at the moment, the honeymoon if you like. I would like to see a three pronged attack of Cisse with Perez and Cabella playing off him, that should keep their defence busy. A 3 man mf with Sissoko in the middle and back four.

  3. Palace will move above us if they win. Not bad for a team fearing relegation a month ago. Nowt to do with pardew mind 😯 😆

  4. Wow! The blogs on a roll. 😉

    Well done Dave. 😉

Aussie must be seething now. He thought the threads would dry up without him. 🙄

Come out of your huff Aussie. I have so much flak to give you. 😆

  5. DAVE cheers mate nowt like a early start imo

SHARPY that’s the team changes I would like to see,Pardew knows all the strength and weakness of our players where as Carver will know little of Palace players, tougher than the Stoke game someone will be left with egg on their face

  6. I’m concerned by our recent lack of goal threat. I fear the worst tomorrow. The master will beat the apprentice I’m afraid.

  7. How about

    Krul
    Janmatt Dummett Colo Haidara

    Abeid Sissoko Sammi

    Perez Cabella
    Cisse

Perez and Cabella could interchange and when Sammi tires bring on Obertan . We could even swap Cisse for Rivi later on if we are winning.

  8. Troy, I would be very disappointed if those three up front couldn’t fashion a couple of goals between them.

I just think we’ve looked poor in front of goal. It’s a concern. Perez looks sharp and can’t be blamed as the service is not great.

Hope I’m wrong. I would take a point now though.

  10. I understand what people are saying to a degree regarding Pardew having the ‘upper hand’, but honestly I think that’s making early excuses for Carver.

Palace aren’t a totally unknown quantity and we know their threats – Zaha, Gayle, Sangogo etc. Carver knows Pardews management and coaching style, and I don’t imagine it would have changed much just coz he’s at Palace now. Having watched the game against Leicester at the weekend, they were pretty awful to be honest.
I’m not suggesting it’s an easy fixture by any means, but if Carver gets the team selection right then it’s a winnable game IMO

  11. Riv. must be very poor in training as he isn’t getting a sniff and with our lack of goals you would think Carver would try some sort of change up front imo Perez needs help

      (Quote)

  12. Ice – what worries me about Rivière is that he’s not even really getting used as a sub. The likes of Gouffran and Obertan are getting on ahead of him. We haven’t used Armstrong or Chucky either though, so we must be really lacking in the forwards department

  13. Well done, Dave. Another good article.

Can’t see us winning this one but might get a draw. be another low scoring game I fear.

  14. Well we should get to know today how much extra cash jabba will get from the new TV deal bet he is rubbing his hands,he will show us how good he is by keeping ticket prices down

  15. Sharpy, yeah for this game I would, I would have him on the bench and if we aren’t coping at the back bring him on then , remove one of the front guys depending on who’s the most cack at the time.

  16. Kim – I’m just not so sure that Sammi provides the same level of defensive cover as Colback – which creates the freedom for Sissoko. Also, Colback seems to have found a bit of goal scoring form recently.

  17. Still no Aussie ? I reckon Stuart79 and Troy should get Aussie an apology card and a consortment of chocolates to show a gesture of good will.

      (Quote)

  18. Kim/Sharpy – I’m with Sharpy this time. Colback’s been one of our better players all season and is a threat going forward. He also has a bit of steel and determination even if he’s not much of a playmaker.

Still absolute silence from the club on Aarons. Something’s not right there, it’s over 4 months now with a hamstring????

  19. Can you believe that the FA are going to charge Nigel Pearson for his clash with McArthur?! 😯
How on earth can they come to that decision FFS.

The fact that we seem to be putting so much emphasis on our attacking players defending is probably one of the reasons why we only attack with 1 or 2 players in the penalty area. It actually makes for such boring games that we have been encountering. We play with two defensive midfielders in Colback and Anita so why we need to be so negative in attack is beyond me.

      (Quote)

  21. Stu – All I’m saying is that I think Colback has a better engine than Sammy. Sammy is more creative, but Colback does get forward when we have the ball, but provides better defensive cover than Sammy would when we don’t have it. He gives a better balance to the team IMO.

  22. I would play Perez on the left instead of Ameobi, Cisse through the middle and Abeid for Anita. Plus Dummet for Williamson.

      (Quote)

  23. Sharpy

I think Ameobi will keep his place. Carver like his predecessor favours two people in the left back position. Dummett and Abeid must come in and I would drop Cabella for Cisse.

  24. nice one dave.
well we know percys game plan, hit on the break.
so i reckon we can win this one like, plus the lads will be reet up for this after percy dropped them in the ***** and did a runner. 😉

  25. Toby – Carver taking Cabella off at Stoke makes me think he’s planning to play him. He’s probably been in the kids ear as well, reminding him that Pardew didnt play him – go out and show him how wrong he was!.
You’re right, I think Sammy will start too, but I wouldn’t, I’d go with Cisse instead.
Just goes to show how tough a managers job is though when we all have different ideas

  26. The Palace fans will be right behind Pards for this one. They appreciate the job he’s doing for them.

They were facing relegation and many predicted Pards would take them down, but now they are closing in on us.

He’s a wise old owl for leaving us. Good to see Carver supporting him as well. Clearly no bitterness.

      (Quote)

  27. Kim – I totally agree. They should go with the attitude, we’ll show you you were wrong to leave in my opinion. All I mean is that Cabella has a particular point to prove.

Troy – I agree. I think JCs interviews as he’s refreshingly open and honest in the way he speaks. No bitterness, but no friendships for 90 mins for me either I’d hope.

  28. Like most toon fans I would place little significance in the remainder of our season. But tomorrow’s game and the Derby are the stand out fixtures of the remaining games. I’d be looking as much at performance as result in both games as to whether Carver gets my backing beyond this season.
But I would imagine that would be the case for most – including Lee and Mike.

      (Quote)

  29. MDS, I don’t like not having a weekend game, and next weeks City game is a teatime KO so with them all around us having played depending on results it could bring more pressure.

      (Quote)

  30. Sharpy, JC sure as hell can’t do any worse than Percy in the Derby, well not unless they thump us with a cricket score 😳 🙄

  31. Woo hoo Percy’s boys top the league, pity it’s only for fouls 😆 All the Premier League clubs listed below with number of fouls committed so far in the Premier League.

  35. I see the TV money has gone through the roof – Again! Will we actually spend any of it? The logical answer is no. We haven’t spent any of the precioys huge increases. One of the few clubs actually who hasn’t spent it…

But I would like to draw everyone’s attention to Scudamores comments re empty seats at grounds. I was told last by some on here a fans boycott wouldn’t make any differenc. Clearly it would as he’s confirmed full stadiums are a major part of the PL brand and empty seats would damage the brand. It’s the only way to rid the club of Jabba!

A half empty SJP woukd damage Ashley in the pocket and he’d come under pressure from PL, that much is clear now.

  36. I remember arguing with that fountain of economical info, Stardust a few years back when he was arguing that Jabba was placing us in a perfect position for when the TV revenues stopped and we’d be in great shape to take advantage. Well they’ve only trebled since!!! 😎 Oh and Jabba has made NUFC more dependant on TV income than ever!!! What a Moby…

Ashley will be raking it in as it won’t be going on players. NUFC will still value players at 2013 prices even though the income will go up by a minimum of £23m…
