Well not much positive to write about after our embarrassing 5-0 defeat against Man City at the weekend.
So I thought I would do a bit of scatter gun round up of things that have been said from then,
1st up JC has came out and has called for more service to his 10-goal top scorer.
Carver said: “He’s our top scorer. I felt sorry for him (at Man City).
“He worked so hard – he had a great effort at goal just after half-time.
“But he never got any service because we were always defending.
“We knew we would go there and defend for long periods, but we didn’t defend well enough.
“It’s not like they opened us up with a great goal or great strike from 30 yards.“All the goals were preventable.”
Now Carver wants Cisse and United’s best players to step up to the plate against Villa.
When asked who he thought were the main men at Newcastle, Carver said: “Coloccini, Tim Krul, Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse.”
Carver was reeling after the hammering at Man City, but has vowed to bounce back.
He said: “I’m disappointed, but it’s not the end of the world.
“We will get judged on the games against Aston Villa and teams like that.”
United will be without Jack Colback for the home clash with Aston Villa, but will welcome back Remy Cabella.
Daryl Janmaat will be assessed after picking up a groin strain on Saturday, with Ryan Taylor standing by to take his place at right-back.
Moussa Sissoko Has been talking aswell saying he and his team mates must stick together in the wake of the defeat – and he has pleaded with the club’s fans to stay with the team.
And the 25-year-old has promised a reaction against relegation-threatened Aston Villa at St James’s Park on Saturday.
“The fans have been behind us all season, when we’ve won and when we’ve lost,” Sissoko told the Gazette.
“We have to say thank you and do the best every game. We try to win the next game for us and for the fans.
“We have to stay together. To lose 5-0 is hard, but if we want to do something for the rest of the season we have to stay together.
“We have to work hard and be ready for Saturday.” Sissoko said: “It’s a team. I have a responsibility to the team, and I will try to do my best.
“I can play well and I can play bad sometimes, but as a team we try to play well together. We’ll see in the next game.”
“We conceded a penalty too early.
“When they scored after 20 seconds, it’s hard to do something.
“Now we have to learn about this game and train very hard and be ready for the next game.
“The plan was to stay solid and compact and try to score one goal if we can, but we conceded a goal too early.
“Everybody knows we didn’t play well. We have to learn about this game and try to win the next game.
“We have to be ready and stay focused. It’s a massive game for everybody and we have to get the three points.”
Daryl Janmaat has also been speaking after the City game, “We say sorry, we have to apologise because it’s not good enough.
“To come here you know it will be a hard evening.
“If you give a stupid goal away in the first minute you know it will make it even more difficult.”
Janmaat says that there can be no excuses after the heavy loss – despite City’s expensively-assembled team.
He said: “Yes of course (they are world class).
“It is still disappointing.
“We have to do better than this.”
Janmaat was particularly riled by the penalty conceded after just 28 seconds when Mike Williamson and Vurnon Anita got in a mix up.
The straight-talking Dutch defender said: “They (City) don’t need extra favours but that’s what they got.
“We shoot ourselves in the foot.
“It’s stupid. There are no positives.
“We have to work hard for next week and prepare ourselves.
“We have to give the fans something back – and that’s three points.”
Janmaat admitted that harsh words had also taken place in the dressing room at City.
“There were some hard words but that’s to stay inside,” he revealed.
And he says that Saturday’s game against Aston Villa can’t come quick enough as his team-mates look to make amends.
He said: “It’s important to get three points for them against Aston Villa back at home.” The Dutch international picked up what looked like a groin injury at Eastlands and was replaced by Ryan Taylor, he will be assessed this week.
Ryan Taylor said “We can build confidence through the week on the training pitch.
“It’s going to be a tough week. We will have a meeting on Monday, discussions about the game and a lot of people standing up and having their say on what went on.
“That’s what we need – to get it out in the open, have a chat about it and then focus on training well and making sure we are fully prepared to face Aston Villa next weekend.
“We have to put it right against Villa and get three points for the fans, because we let them down.
“All we can do is apologise and try to correct it for them next Saturday.”
Fabricio Coloccini Our Club Captain Coloccini has as usual not came out to say a word, that I can find after the defeat to City. I find that a total disgrace, that is part of the Club Captains job but then I have never believed that he has been a proper Captain of our Club.
That ends the round up, So from what I get from all the interviews is that everyone knows that they have to come out on saturday and get the 3 pts, but then we have been in this position before and been let down again. But it wont be long until we find out if the players can walk the walk..
If Colo talks as good as he plays we are missing nowt.

I think Colo has got by on 1 excellent season with us. He’s played very well in other games but very inconsistent for large parts.
But there again, I can’t ever really remember Newcastle having excellent CBs.

Sharpy, part of the problem is that the club decided to dispense with leaders in the dressing room when they got burned a bit by Barton and Nolan – since then only Cabaye has shown any leadership, and he turned against as well. Lack of bollocks seems to be part of the recruitment profile, while we all know that big balls gets footballers a long way 🙂
Not many good centre backs in my time – plenty of effortful plodders, mind. Woodgate when fit, Peter Jackson was a leader…

Uh, no John, you will get judged on all your games. We all expected to lose to City, that’s fine, but you will get judged on your performance. That performance was as bad as I have seen any NUFC team play. The funny thing was, they weren’t even that good, if we took a hammering when they were sublime then fair does – but they were average, and actually missed a fair few sitters. Should have been a lot worse. Still, at least we weren’t playing Barca eh.

Agree GTE – I have said for a while now our lack of leaders is a key aspect of us taking hammerings and never seeming to respond to a challenge. We still got hammered under Hughton when we had Barton and Nolan (5-1 to Bolton wasn’t it?) but despite being average players they did have a little edge about them.
For me Cabaye was sort of a leader, but also a bit prone to sulking, and Sissoko is in the same mould when he got sent off earlier. There isn’t really anyone else. Taylor and Tiote show some leadership qualities, but Tiote seems like he wants out half the time and Taylor will only play 10% of a season. De Jong was brought in as a leader, and it remains to be seen if he will play any more for us than Taylor does now.
Colo is our captain, but he has been on the end of a ridiculous number of hammerings and for me has not shown any ability to rally the troops – often he’ll just lose it under pressure. Not ideal.

Tiote has done canny with the armband, and I think Janmaat has the makings of a good captain. But I’d be taking it off Colo next season personally and finally allow him to leave. Get Micah Richards in instead and Colos wage can go towards him instead.

I’d agree on Janmaat, Sharpy. Think bac to the centre backs as well, very few of them have been the most talented, but players like Roeder, Jeff Clarke, Killer Kilcline, even Distin were leaders. We;ve normally had a players in mf who will tryto raise the crowd and the team by putting a few tackled in, like Davey Mac, Batty, Speedo, Nolan and Barton…Yes, Janmaat fits that bill too,apart from him, neeone.
One decent ballsy centre half would transform our lot…with an aggressive coach.

They are professionals and should be going out for 3 points from every game. Yes there are harder fixtures than some, and they certainly won’t get 3 points from every game, but most teams UP their game against the bigger teams – but from what JCs saying there is it’s ok to be below par against the City’s of the league, coz we’ll be judged against the lesser teams – bull ****!!.
Oh, and well done John boy. I’m pretty sure Tim Sherwood will use that quote to rally his troops!!.

Sharpy – I’m not saying the manager or the players should go in with that attitude, what I’m saying is if we’re being realistic, it is a match we fans would “write off” as a match where we won’t get anything from. It’s not the same as accepting a loss – just judging the most likely outcome. It’s up to the players and manager to find a way around that, and perform as best as they are able as event a point would be a massive result for us, given our form and our history against City over the last 10 years or so.
But agree with the second part of what you’re saying – and like I said, Carver will get judged on all his games. For him to come out and brazenly say he’s just disappointed is a joke. He should be raging, he should be appalled. To say we will get judged against the Aston Villas of the league (the most boring, lowest scoring, worst side to have stayed in the PL over the last three seasons?) is mental. I’d like to think we’re a bit better than that John.

Newkie – I understand what you’re saying, I just don’t like it, and don’t think that way personally – but accept a lot do. I just think if fans have a defeatist attitude about certain games then the players and manager get let off a bit in those games. We get annoyed when we field a weakened team in cup games, so we should get annoyed if we don’t play well in ANY game IMO and not just shrug our shoulders and say ‘oh well, it was City away’. I’m not referring to you individually there by the way.
CC – I’d have Dummett replace Colo in CB, and pair him with Richards. I’d also go and buy Tyrone Mings from Ipswich and let both Willo & Colo go. That would leave us with 5 CBs in Saylor, Richards, Lascelles, Dummett and Mings. Dummett & Mings can also cover LB and Richards can cover RB if needed.

Sharpy – Honestly I don’t think a “defeatist” attitude is all that bad. If anything I would argue that lower expectations means being able to play without pressure or less pressure – and can bring out the best in sides – it’s just up to the players and the manager to show it. Some of our best results have come with no pressure – 3-0 turn over of Manure, beating Chelsea time and again, beating City with the kids, at the Etihad. I’d say most expected us to lose them all, yet you can use that lack of pressure – and the overconfidence of the opposition, to really put pressure on them and exploit the fact their players may not be up for the game.
It’s not about not getting annoyed at a loss to a better side – I am annoyed at every loss, it always damnpens my mood, that’s why I don’t understand those who claim they’d rather lose 4-3 than win 1-0. Personally unless the footie is genuinely woeful, a win will always give me a certain pleasure that losing (even if done “well”) never does. But that being said, if you asked me how annoyed I’d be with losing to Man City 1-0 at the Etihad compared to 0-1 at Home to Leicester, the second would **** me off a lot more.

Georgio – I’ve seen Mings afew times this season and while he’s young, the kids a beast. 6’5ft, knows how to head the ball but is good on the ground too. He’s played LB and even been used as a left winger – though I think he’s best at CB.
I saw more of Lascelles last season as he’s not been used much this season, though he did play at the weekend and was solid.
Regarding Richards, he’s said he’s looking for a move back to the PL, but it won’t be with City as he’s already knock a contract offer back. He’s said he wants to be playing and knows he won’t be at City. I reckon he’d fit Arsenal or right of a Liverpool back 3 to be honest, but we should absolutely do as much as we can to get him to the toon.
CC – the weather has been lovely today!!. So nice in fact that I was able to replace the tiles on my roof that were blown off this week 🙄 😆

It was an embarrasing loss for them, given their record against us, the team we fielded, and our record in cups. They did a lot better against us recently because I think we’ve really gone downhill in the last couple of months, imo.

Stu – I reckon Richards has a leadership mentality. If Tiote then left (and by Tiote I mean most likely Sissoko :sad:) I’d go with Steven Nzozi or Jonjo Shelvey – who again have leadership qualities. You know I’d like to see Danny Ings arrive too, and I think he’s displayed leadership qualities at Burnley this season as well.
But I’d like to see a couple of talented young pups too, coz to be fair, our young players have shown as many leadership qualities as the seniors – Perez being a prime example.

There is another major overhaul of the squad coming up. There are loads of contracts expiring this year and next year. Technically in June but players are free to negotiate from January.
I believe Santon was sent to Inter because he only had a year left on his contract and had value still. A lot of the rest of the squad have contracts due up in about a year but have little value – Sicknote Taylor, Williamson, Marveaux, Elliot, Coloccini. Ryan Taylor, Ameobi, Jonas and some of the Rangers 5 and Gateshead 2 have expiring contracts.
If you look at it, we are left with not even a matchday squad of players under contract for more than a year (technically a year and 3 months).
I don’t know if this is by design, but there are going to be some big holes come summer. Is that a good thing or bad thing for a new manager? I don’t see why you would put half a new team in the hands of John Carver when it might be attractive to a new manager to have an overhauled squad.
One thing is for certain and that is we will be hard pressed to survive without 5 or 6 additions and we cannot fund these with our only major saleable assets of Krul, Janmaat, and Sissoko. Even Fatty cannot be that stupid.
The problem is that with all this money sloshing around the PL then the Agents are going to look for even higher salaries for mediocre players, especially English. I hope we have a plan 🙂

Mike only listens to Mike now. If we finish 14th or above he will do very little. Will he bring in a new head coach if we sit 14th? I would say yes but whether he can get someone decent remains an open question. I don’t think it’s a big secret that he’s a nightmare to work for. The team is rotten at the top. A lot of people were questioning the purchase of Lascelles when Pearce decided to drop him earlier this season. But since Dougie Freeman has taken over Lascelles has played every game (as has Darlow), and they have been unbeaten so far.

I think you’re right though, I think now the charges have been dropped he can concentrate on his footy, and probably sees a way straight into our first team from Forest to be fair.
