Game On! Newcastle United v Aston Villa

Mags v Villains
Mags v Villains

United take on Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
John Carver expects an Aston Villa team with a “new lease of life” to provide a tough test in todays Premier League encounter at St James’ Park.
So another tough test after we were thumped 5-0 by defending champions Manchester City last time out in a game that marked the low point in a run of just one win in their last eight.
A home match against relegation-threatened Villa – who have not won in the league since December 7 – presents a chance for Newcastle to end that dismal streak and repay the fans for last weeks diabolical performance.
Talking ahead of the game JC was quick to point out that “I’ve seen the difference in Villa straight away under Tim,” Carver said. “They are going front to back a bit quicker.”Villa have got a new lease of life, more energy, and it won’t be an easy game for us.”
Jonas Gutierrez is in the senior squad for the first time since recovering from testicular cancer.
And while Jonas could be in line for an emotional return, and give the fans a bit of a boost, United still have a host of injury issues to deal with.
Remy Cabella is a doubt with a knee problem that forced him to miss the drubbing at the Etihad Stadium,( which after revealing that he would miss the game on social media on friday it would seem he isn’t a doubt anymore) while Jack Colback is suspended. Teenage winger Rolando Aarons (hamstring) is still out and is joined on the sidelines by Siem de Jong (lung), Paul Dummett (knee), Robert Elliot (thigh), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Cheick Tiote (knee).

Newcastle Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini (c), Williamson, Haïdara; Obertan, Sissoko, Abeid, Ameobi; Rivière, Cissé.

Subs Woodman, R.Taylor, Anita, Gouffran, Gutierrez, Armstrong, Perez.

Villa Guzan, Hutton, Okore, Clark, Lowton, Sinclair, Delph, Cleverley, Westwood, Agbonlahor, Benteke.

Subs Given, Bacuna, Weimann, Sanchez, Gil, N’Zogbia, Grealish.

  1. MDS – I was wondering where we were going when I started reading through that post 😆

It’s right though, I’d add Liverpool to that list too with the likes of Sterling & Ibe coming through their ranks. I don’t think its unrealistic either personally.

  2. Well Eric, the reason I think the club are wrong to offer Aarons what they’ve offered him is because it’s less than the going rate for highly rated young players and others will offer him that.

Hamstrings are very common with young players and most out grow the issue – Owen is very much the exception not the rule.

  3. Cholo – I’ve not really heard of Kara Mbodji, and certainly haven’t seen him play. But from what I’ve read about him, he’s a 25yr old, Senagal who’s at Genk.
My 2 immediate concerns would be that at 25, why he’s not at a better club than Genk already. Secondly, being Senagal – the ACON again. Also according to the media, they reckon a £5m price tag – is that a reflection on how long he’s got left on his contract, or how good he is?!.

  4. Stu – the Liverpool and West Ham deals for two were ‘paid for’ via leveraged finance – where the buyer raises a loan to do the deal secured on the assets thmselves, in this case the grounds and training grounds. For West Ham, that’s aboutt o get successfully unravelled as they move to Olympic Stadium. Neither Short nor the ackems owner paid cash from their own pocket. It hardly matters – the owners bought the clubs looking to increase the value of the asset, not for pure love of football.

  5. Eric – I said a similar thing about Aaron’s the other week. His contract doesn’t expire until next summer (not this one) so maybe they are hanging on to see how these injuries pan out.
To be fair, from what I’ve read from Aaron’s tweets, he gets that and doesn’t seem to be throwing his toys just yet.

  6. I’m not being awkward, GTE but I am almost certain that West Ham and Sunderland were purchased using the owners cash. Neither cost a lot of money to buy as they were both distressed sales and Liverpool had a load of grief from Hicks and Gillette using loans to buy the club so I would doubt the board would have agreed to going through all that again.

  7. Sharpy17- Kara is a Tall pacey dominant CB, able to operate also as DM and CM, with a decent technique(he is a former n10),similar to Zuma for Chelsea yesterday. he is only 25, and the reason he is not on better than Genk is that he is on the rise, he was developped at Diambars, our current most successful academy in Senegal. Then he went to Molde in Norway, and then Genk, for being Senegalese can tell you that he is our of our most promiscing player and he may end up at big club. In my opinion, we have to go for him either to play DM/Cb/Cm, in fact he could replace Tioté and Willo/Taylor. That would make us a lot stronger, and we’ll have finally an indication of what our future CB partnership can be.

      (Quote)

  8. Sharpy17- £5M is his value, maybe because he plays in Belgium, in my opinion he can be at wirth twice the price at least when hell go to bigger league, because if we dont get him, wont be sirprised if he ends up at Soton or West Ham. Also signing him could be an indication that Cissé aint leaving this summer.

  9. Cholo – I’m not writing the lad off, just haven’t really seen him play. Mate he can’t be any worse than Willo and MYM didn’t really get on with the PL, so I’d be happy for any new addition at CB

      (Quote)

  10. He’ll get some stick for that like. 15 years old apparently, mind you I know 15 year olds who could pass for 20 easily, hard to tell sometimes.

      (Quote)

  11. If he’s had a bit with a 15 year old without knowing it then I feel sorry for him because but for the grace of God and all that. Probably met her in a bar in Town and who asks for passports? If he knew on the other hand he’s a silly boy!

      (Quote)

  12. Sharpy17- I know you dont write him off, but as I know him just wanted to describe the guy a bit. In my opinion would be better than MYM

      (Quote)

  13. I’ve read elsewhere that Aarons has two years left on his deal after this year. Not sure which is right.

The lad may look mint but he’s still only played a couple of matches. Not sure what the going rate would be for a player in that situation.

      (Quote)

  14. Even before this, I was starting to think that they’re going down – they are one bad result for them, or one good result for two of Burnley, QPR and Villa, away from relegation – and they all have to play each other. Tasty, now that we’re not involved…

      (Quote)

  15. And here it is mates! The first interview of the day:
G2: Johnny C. how are you feeling after that brilliant win on the weekend?
Johnny C.: Bloody relieved G2. We are miles ahead of them in quality as everyone could see but we didn’t exactly fill the old onion bag.
G2: Word is out that you’re looking at Carlos Bacca Johnny. What can you tell us?
Johnny C: It’s all bollocks G2. We’re already loaded up at striker. Why, we’ve got Cisse and ermm Perez and what’s that other lad’s name? Ferrerya! Oh yes Ferrerya. He’s almost ready to sit on the bench. That’s how pleased we are with him. Beautiful.
G2: Well thanks Johnny C. I know there will be more exciting games to come. Looking forward to speaking with you after ManU.
There it is lads. We’re loaded up with strikers. Straight from Johnny C.

      (Quote)

  16. I have a feeling we’re really going to spend big in the summer mates. Maybe as much as 5M pounds! No really, it’s going to be big. Another second division Spanish player and possibly a Dutch third division CB! It’s brilliant. Lee Charmless is right on top of it.

      (Quote)

  17. Stu@539, That’s the thing I was thinking. I don’t reckon he knew her real age, if he did he’s an idiot being so high profile. That’s gonna be one costly shag in more ways than one.

      (Quote)

  18. G2, Agree mate, why would he change his mindset now?, Yet again we have pretty much achieved safety on a paper thin squad so he’ll continue to gamble on the clubs future I’m certain.

      (Quote)

  19. Cholo – I’m grateful for it mate. For those like me who knows nowt about the lad, it could look like another bargain basket signing raided from a lower league. But actually it sounds more like more good scouting from what you’re saying.

      (Quote)

  20. Yes Kim mate he won’t change his stripes now. At least 35M pounds profit from last year. Mike feels like his got this footy malarkey sussed now. Spend little, say nothing, rake in the cash.

      (Quote)

  21. As for Adam Johnson, I don’t feel sorry for him at all!!.
It’s not like he’s a young naive kid. He’s 27 and should have more sense having seen plenty other footballers get themselves into bother.

      (Quote)

  22. Kim – He’s a PL footballer and despite being a ugly skinny ****, probably has girls sniffing round him whenever he’s out.
He’s 27 and been at Boro, City and Scum as well as England – he’s not a young naive kid.
Even if it’s consentual – she’s 15!, shes a school kid and by law, shes too young to consent anyway.

      (Quote)

  23. Here it is lads. That next exciting interview you’ve all been waiting for:
G2: Lee Charnley it’s a pleasure to talk to you. Can you tell us your thoughts about the club as it stands.
Lee: Well I’m very excited G2. I strongly believe in this group of players. When I look out over the training ground I see nothing but purple. Purple, purple, purple. I’m convinced we’re within 5 years of challenging for 10th place. I’m convinced we’ll get at least one win in each cup almost every season. That’s what we’re building here.
G2: horrified silence. Finally…..Ah I see Lee. Well thanks for that. I’ll pass this on to the supporters and get back to you.
    More horrified silence.

  24. 129.7 M pounds revenue Mike. We’re watching closely. We need vast improvement of the squad. Get busy this summer Mike or expect trouble. As Shearer says people are not happy Mike. 👿

      (Quote)

  25. What happens if Lee Charmless discovers sex and spends even less time on the club? It’s a big worry. He looks like he might be approaching puberty now.

      (Quote)

  26. We’re still exhausted from the game on Saturday everyone. Don’t panic but it looks like Ferrerya up front with Obertan on the right and one of the ball boys on the left.

      (Quote)

  27. Sharpy, I’m not sticking up for him but if she looks older and didn’t say no then it’s not his fault . Unless of course he knew she was 15, then yes it’s totally wrong and he’s an idiot as I said. God knows why any girl would mind, he looks like a rodent, proper minging.

      (Quote)

  28. Kimtoon: don’t they protect the identity of minors in cases like this, so nobody will know what she looks like? Probably best not to speculate. However, it seems a bit much to send 3 cars and a police van to get him.

      (Quote)

  29. Bloody neggers 👿
why can’t we look forwards to having a go and beating the mancs for a change.
    You never know. ffs

      (Quote)

  30. Kim – I just think he’s an idiot. At 27 he should know better than to pull a bird when he’s out on the ****. Drink in, sense out.

      (Quote)

  31. Eric, Yeah does seem excessive amount of police used . I only mention what she may look like cause I know plenty of 15 year old girls who look much older and do not let on their real age to the older guys they date. I know I never when I was 15 . Like I said it all comes down to did he know and stuff.

      (Quote)

  32. I assume you think he should live like a Monk then, SHARPY and stay in like a Hermit just because he’s a footballer? Are footballers not allowed to meet women?

      (Quote)

  33. women yes
    girls NO
even he can tell the difference
Nee sympathy from me, throw the book at him

      (Quote)

  34. Stu – where have I said that?. Are you suggesting that the only place for him to meet a lass is in a pub or nightclub though?.
He’s either known the girl & known she was under age – in which case he deserves the book thrown at him, or he’s picked her up and had a one night stand with a total stranger – in which case he’s an idiot and should know better than to do that.

      (Quote)

  35. STUART live like a monk?when in Malta I saw more monks with birds than I could count some get all the luck 😀

      (Quote)

  36. Earlier today, The Sun claimed that an ‘England footballer’ who is also a ‘Prem ace’ was arrested at 9.15am today and a legally owned loaded gun was found at the residence 😯

      (Quote)

  37. I think you’re being rather naive, Sharpy. Adam Johnson is as entitled as anyone to go out in a nightclub with his mates. If he met this girl, she looked about 20 (as they do nowadays) then and had sex with her, I feel sorry for him. Was he stupid for not asking for her passport? Doubt it, as how many people would do that? None of say.

Now if your problem is that he’s met a girl and had a one night stand then that’s a moral issue and a whole new debate.

If on the other hand he’s had sex with a girl he knows is only 15 he’s an complete idiot and deserves everything he will get. Although I really don’t think he’d be that stupid and imagine the reality is a one night stand with a girl looking 20 and he’s been unlucky. Or at least I hope that’s the case.

      (Quote)

  38. Kim in some areas of my country its a crime not to have a legally owned loaded gun inside your residence 😉

      (Quote)

  39. Kimtoon: The Daily Mail says it was a starters pistol which can only fire blanks.

      (Quote)

  40. I wouldn’t be surprised if the starters pistol was to scare burglars as there have been quite a few robberies of footballers in the NW. The idiots flaunt their bling and loads of fancy watches so they are a target for petty thieves and thugs. I think I saw one picture (Balotelli?) where he had like 20 Rolexes, Patek Philippes and the like.

      (Quote)

  41. Stu – do you know the law of this land?.
The girl is 15 which makes her a minor. Whether she was drunk or sober, said yes or no, by law she is too young at 15 to give consent. I’m afraid looking 20 is no defence in any court. This is either statutory rape or unlawful intercourse due to her age – that carries a custodial sentences – and whilst I don’t expect him to go as far as asking for a passport, I would expect a 27yr old PL football to be more savvy than to pull a one night stand.
Morally, if he’s a single lad, knock yourselves out. But if you shag a bird you don’t know then your taking risks. If it were you or I, we all know it’s not really making the news. If your a PL footballer, you know that every media outlet is covering it.
I have a little saying, which kinda works for this scenario – is the juice worth the squeeze?. Was a drunken bang worth possibly going to jail for or maybe your career? – or are you trying to convince me that Johnson actually believe that it was going to be the start of something beautiful and truly meaningful that night 🙄

      (Quote)

  42. Kim – that makes it morally wrong in my opinion too then.

I’m fairly certain he gets added to the sex offenders register as well actually.

      (Quote)

  43. Jesus Sharpy talk about Black and White! If someone told me to open their front door and take their car keys then go for a spin in their car then reported it to the police Id be done for theft. In other words in some cases the law is an *** and I believe that in cases like this the girl should also be held to account.

I’ll tel you something else too, I bet in cases like this the club or bar doesn’t get prosecuted for selling alcohol to a under age person either.

There are many different kinds of offences in this country which just aren’t as Black and White as you paint it. Your view on this is So frustrating.

      (Quote)

  44. I assume you’re a tee totaller too, Sharpy as only someone who either doesn’t drink or is perfect never gives in to temptation. I’m referring to your moral high grounded view on one night stands, not AJ being tempted by a 15 year Old girl. If he knew, that’s just plain wrong and illegal but under other circumstances it’s just very very grey. Two people who are pissed, get cracking on it and end up in bed. Who the **** stops and asks for a birth certificate? The fact that he’s got a common law partner and still did it, is of course wrong but eh ho, everyone makes the odd mistake.

      (Quote)

  45. Stu – you wouldn’t be done for theft at all – unless the person who gave you permission didn’t live there and it wasn’t there car – and you assumed it was without asking. That scenerio is closer to Johnsons with this girl.

I agree that the pub/club should be fined too.

What’s the grey areas like stu?, they were pissed or she looked older than 15?. Should the jury just not listen to evidence and instead have a general consensus – get them pissed and if they think the lass looks older than 15 then he gets off? 😆

      (Quote)

  46. Stu – I’m neither a tee totaller nor perfect. I have had plenty a drunk night out and chatted to numerous women during those nights out, but I have never once cheated on my wife – so have never been in a position to ask for a birth cert or passport 😉
I don’t get out as often as I used to as I have other commitments now and honestly, a hang over lasts days now and I don’t have that kind of time 😕
But when I was younger I was in Town every weekend with my mates, usually the Quayside and when single I did ok – if you know what I mean. But when in a relationship I enjoyed myself without the need to pull.

      (Quote)

  47. So now it is ok to go out and **** any female you want as long as you “thought” they were over age! 😳

      (Quote)

  48. The grey area is the obvious; if a girl looks 20 year old, why would you ask for proof of age? You might ask her how old she is, in fact I’m oretty sure it would come up in conversation but I bet you as much as you like the girl wouldn’t say she was 15 if she was. What then? I just cannot accept its all the mans fault in an instance like that. It’s like someone getting done for rape because the women didn’t actually say ‘yes’. Actions speak louder than words in many cases. The reality is that I cannot believe too many people would have sex with someone 15 years old, but if they got told they are older than that and look older then there’s mitigating circumstances for sure.

Thanks for that insightful comment, Aussie. Perfect example of why you’ve been missed on here about as much as tooth ache.

      (Quote)

  49. Nah -good to see you back AMF. Don’t stay away and sulk like a whingeing Pom,stick it to ’em.

      (Quote)

  50. Maybe before Young men go out at night they should call their Solictor and get them to draft up a letter of declaration for the other party to sign before any physical contact commences. Don’t know whether it will cotton on. What happens if the person is under age and still signs it? The guy would still be arrested and charged. Again, a farce.

      (Quote)

  51. Stuart, seeing that you are no doubt still a virgin and living at home with your mum and dad, I reckon you are not one to comment on this subject matter! 😳

      (Quote)

  52. Aussie back again is that you back for good ?
On the AJ with the 15 yr old IMO he should know better, but thats not to say that some young girls can look like they’re in their 20’s when they are dolled up.
