Newcastle v Man United Preview

Newcastle-vs-Man-Utd
We play host to Man utd on Wednesday 4th of March at 7.45pm, And after a very lacklustre 1-0 win over Aston Villa at home on Saturday John Carver will be demanding a more incisive display up front.
He said after the Villa win: “I was brave going with two wingers and two strikers – there are not many head coaches or managers in the Premier League go that way, but I did it because I felt it was important to get the three points.
“We talked about getting the ball in the wide areas and putting the ball in the box because it’s no good Papiss [Cisse] being the lone striker and trying to play into his feet.
“But what was disappointing was that in the first half, we didn’t put the ball in the box enough, and it just shows you, the ratio: you put it in the box and he will score a goal for you, and thankfully he did.”
Daryl Janmaat has also been speaking again “We know Manchester United are a big team and they play well so we will really have to try hard to come away with maximum points,.
“I think though, that the pressure will be more on them than us. We got the three points out of our last game which was crucial for us.
“Those points will build our positivity as a team and we can now be more confident to play Manchester United.
“They are a good team and they win games but they are expected to win more. It will be a massive game for us and the fans, and a superb game to play in and be a part of.
“We want the win, we want the three points and we will do everything that we can to get them.”
Jack Colback will miss the game as he serves out the remainder of his two-match ban, while Massadio Haidara is also a doubt after picking up an injury against Villa, with Ryan Taylor on standby to fill in at left-back also winger Jonas Gutierrez is back in contention after featuring on the bench against Villa for the first time since recovering from cancer so should make the bench again, however Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella are still injured, and Paul Dummett, Cheick Tiote, and Steven Taylor longterm injuries.

Louis van Gaal’s men travel to Tyneside sitting fourth in the Barclays Premier League following a 2-0 win over 10-man Sun5er1and at the weekend.
However, the Old Trafford club’s performances have remained largely unconvincing and will need to improve during what Mata – who netted twice in a 4-0 win at Newcastle last season – labels a crucial month in their quest for UEFA Champions League football.
“We will need to give everything in the next games to get our goals; for a start, against Newcastle in the Premier League, and next Monday against Arsenal in the FA Cup,” Mata wrote on his official blog. “We will also play Tottenham and Liverpool in March, so it’s not an exaggeration to describe this month as one of the most demanding ones this season.
“We remain in the Champions League spots, but you just need to have a look at the table to realise how close this race is going to be until the end of the season.
“We are ready for that, although all we think about is trying to win all the games left. Starting this coming Wednesday in St. James’ Park, a stadium that brings back some good memories because I scored several goals there.”
Hopefully Mata wont have any good memories of this game

  1. Kim -boro will be coming up, we’ll make do with that Derby and maybe embarass ourselves less… 😆

I think with their current owner and squad relegation would set them back years, even when they got promoted again. I’d be happy wi to have

As it is, the best thing for NUFC is to have the more “traditional” clubs get sent down – so villa, everton, sunderland would do me like.. 😉

  2. Ice – no mate, his lass couldn’t get a lift back from brownies so he took time off to collect her 😆

  4. Anyone else get the feeling the club are holding back the minutes from the fans forum until after tomorrowd game? Now I am assuming that would mean they’re not particularly positive?

Also when was the last time one of our better players signed a CL tract extension?

  5. They have been flirting with relegation for seasons but always escape the jammy feckers.

  6. Kimtoon: you are right about Johnson not being able to play against us. This is from the Daily Telegraph and I can’t see him playing again this season with this hanging over his head (guilty or innocent):

“It is understood the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had boasted of her alleged liaison with the 27-year-old footballer to friends and on social media.

It has also emerged that Johnson has posed for pictures with the girl.
When her father was made aware of the rumours he went to the police and Johnson was arrested and questioned for several hours.”

Of course it could all be the fantasy of a teenage girl and the police may not bring charges. Whatever happens Johnson is done for the year as his head will be ****** up.

  7. So Ashley is delighted with the progress made under Carver. Why don’t they just appoint him now and stop making everyone think they still have ambitions to appoint someone half decent.

  8. He’s delighted with our progress Stewie? What exactly delights him? Our poor play? Our lack of depth?

  9. I’m going for a Manu victory tomorrow. They will tear are defence to shreds, this could be an even bigger defeat than City.

  10. I’m thinking 3-0 to them Terry. JC will be planning his post interview already.
“I thought we gave them a good game. Their first goal looked offside to me. Willo was tying his laces on the second one. That shouldn’t have counted either. If we had have gotten a shot on goal I’m sure we would have scored.”
    Beautiful JC.

  11. John Carver getting the head coach job just sums Ashley up in a nutshell but he ticks the right boxes.

    1. His cheap.
    2. He will have the team flirting above the relegation places.
    3. His not good enough to get us into europe ( Bonus).
    4. Field a very weak side for cups isn’t a problem.
    5. Will be happy with no transfer money

I’m really looking forward to next season. Defiantly worth renewing another season ticket.

  12. Lets sell all are best players for a massive profit and find cheaper players. We only need 40 points anyway.

      (Quote)

  13. Don’t sell everyone Terry. Let’s keep hold of Krul, Janmaat, and Cisse. Then add 8 very cheap players and try for 40 points. Mike will love it. So exciting!

  14. You must be a Sado Masachist, Dave! I’m not going and aren’t even too bothered about watching on TV. I will probably miss the first half as I would rather go swimming than watch the turgid turd like ***** we serve up now.

  16. Donno Stu I don’t normally but atm I just feel lucky 😉 but I dare say the closer it gets maybe the feeling will wear off.
CC yeah sometimes when we play the big boys and arn’t expected to get owt, when tend to get the odd surprise

  17. The other week i dreaded the man city match and after the 1st 30 seconds i was worried about double figures. The world and his wife knew wed lose that

    Tonight doesnt feel like that

  18. CC – I think Taylor will get absolutely roasted tonight by their attackers. They will target him for sure and I don’t believe it’s possible for someone who has been out for so long to come in and do a job in a position that is not his natural position. Although lets be honest, they could target the middle of our defence too and nobody would notice a difference.

  19. Notice on page 5 of today’s Journal regarding a consultation event for persons to view and comment on the proposals by Tolent Construction for the St James car park site in advance of a planning application to newcastle city council.
Proposals relate to a mixed use scheme including commercial floorspace, hotel, residential accommodation along with public open space.
The event will take place on Thurs 12 March.

Well there goes any future development of the ground.

  20. Weve played Man utd with Willo/Colo at centre half 7 times won 2, drawn 3, lost 2 keeping 3 clean sheets. They have fared surprisingly well against them in the past.

On Ryan Taylor who knows; I thought it would be a bridge too far for him in the centre of midfield at man city, But he was superb from start to finish. With Valencia at right back for them that flank is probably the weak point for both sides

  21. Still lots of empty seats available for tonights game. Apparently it’s due to the tickets only available to members and season ticket holders. So if you want to buy a ticket for tonights match and you’re not a member it will cost you £77.

Policies like this only work when there’s a product people want to see, not when people can’t be arsed anyway and the product is *****.

Is it not the toon that owns that bit of estate? My understanding is the council deemed it an asset to the community which allows a group of interested parties to put forward a reason to stop the selling off of the land or gives them an opportunity to but it. ie a supporters group if they could.

Ultimately, it’s the club that is selling it off anf the council have no power to stop it unless the proposals were outlandish.

    Is that right?

      (Quote)

  23. I have no idea, Troy. I thought it would have to go through planning permission for anyone who bought it and if the council rejected that, there’d be no point the club selling I guess.

  24. Can’t see anything other than a howking tonight. Their players are far superior in every position.

    I’m completely relying on luck.

  25. Well Carver is just the man for jabba, saying Janmmit is good player and thinks LVG will want to sign him in the summer, what a **** head ffs

  26. I asked a couple of questions a couple of times yesterday but didn’t get any answers. So I will try again:

    1) When was the last time one of our best players signed a contract extension/improved contract?
    2) They club are due to release the minutes from the fans forum on Thursday after the match. Is that an indication of the negative message the club put out at the forum?

      (Quote)

  27. Stuart

    A) no idea
    B) That I have no doubt.

Regarding A). Is it not because they are mostly on long term contracts at the moment. Not up to date with who is coming to an end of a contract.

      (Quote)

  28. I don’t get the hiding under the duvet stuff – our pre-Ashley home PL recordvs Man U, including the Keegan and SBR years was W3, D3, L7, so this is always a fixture we expect to be tough. There is no way this can be more painful than the 0-1 (Cantona) or 2-6 (Scholes) matches – that latter match destroyed SBR’s young squad for ever and kick started our slide to mediocrity. So, like always against these, I’m expecting a howking, hoping for a good scrap. Always, however, excited – with the footy, I’ve never stopped being a kid, really.

      (Quote)

  29. Troy – I am also looking at the players who have come in and done well. Take Sissoko for example. Why hasn’t he been offered a new improved contract? Surely he deserves one. Cisse only has one year left on his deal and I would be amazed if we offered him an extension because we wouldn’t get any money for him at the end of it but now we would get money regardless of how it effects the team currently.

      (Quote)

  30. Troy Of first team players, Raylor, Sammy, Jonas end this season, Colo, Willo, Taylor Obertan, Elliot, Abeid end next season.

Given that list, is anyine going to be too upset if all bar Sammy and Abeid don’t get offered new contracts (if we ship out Taylor, Willo and Colo, even NUFC will have to sign at least one new centre back to play with Dummett and Lascelles…)

      (Quote)

  31. Stu – Sissoko’s retained until 2019, and Papiss has > 2 years left. I suspect they want to cash in both anyway, however.

      (Quote)

  32. GTE – Check Steven Taylor’s contract as I think it runs out this year. As for Cisse and Sissoko, the point is we don’t even make an effort to keep them even when doing well. How much would it cost to replace Cisse’s goals?

      (Quote)

  33. Going off NUFC.com-who I’venever yet found wrong on this and they have Saylor for 2016 (i.e. end next season).

I think they’ve earmarked Sissoko as the marquee sale- will be interesting to see if they get their price. Cisse, meanwhile, if you’re playing moneyball, as they are, needs to be sold this summer while hee still has value – even with a new longer term contract, they will calculate, his age means that his sale value will decrease – the more goals he scores this season, the higher the price in the summer.

We’ll then get to reinvest something like half of the proceeds…is it squad building? No, not at all. Will it work, probably, if the aim is just to stay in the division.

      (Quote)

  34. GTE – The point I am making is that the actions of the club aren’t even subtle when it comes to their aspirations. They’re as subtle as a brick which makes it all the more galling.

What is the point in supporting a football club who’s aim is jsut to make money for making money’s sake and have no thoughts of improving whether gradually or faster?

      (Quote)

  35. GTE usually I’m a big proponent of selling a player a year too early rather than a year to late but Cisse is a player who doesn’t really rely on pace. I reckon he’ll be scoring goals for a number of years yet

      (Quote)

  36. I reckon you’re right, MDS, but they’ll not be going to offer him a long-term contract, so will see this as the ‘summer of maximum value of the asset’.

Stu – while we have been having a great lot of agreement recently, every time you trot out the “what’s the point in supporting this lot” line, we differ a load –

Because it’s never been about the winning, or the good football, but the “us”, the hope and desire for the club that SBR talked about.

Because the team I grew up watching were a million times worse than this one.

Because however much I know in my head that we lack ambition and there’s little to get excited about, I still get excited, every game.

Because we have, in fact, had lots worse owners and worse teams than this one.

Because it’s my birthright, and no fat get is going to take that away – he’ll F off soon enough, and it’s our club only because we kept on supporting.

Because if you aren’t there you never get to share the odd miracle – who is to say it isn’t going to be tonight?

      (Quote)

  37. It’s very difficult managing a PL squad these days (so I’ve been told). Regarding contracts for example – Taylor, Raylor and Jonas must have cost us at least £10m in the last two seasons in wages alone. Between them they’ve played less than 30 games and are an absolute drain on finances. Nice, deserving guys and good servants but you can understand Ashley’s wariness on long contracts.

      (Quote)

  38. Well said GTE! We’re also in the habit of springing the odd surprise on the Mancs. Let it be tonight!

      (Quote)

  39. Well, GTE, There is no hope and desire anymore. The past teams that were worse than this at least had an ambition to try and strive for something better. OK, we might have failed but good God, are you seriously saying you would be happy watching NUFC only be interested in finishing mid table for the next 5 years and more?

Football, as in any sport is about competing, trying to be the best you can possibly be and winning, or if you can’t win (as not everyone can) trying to win. We currently do none of the above.

Being a football fan is about hopes, dreams, aspirations and the possibility that one day we might actually achieve something. All them emotions have been crushed to smithereens by the current regime and it has been done with a sledge hammer – no subtlety at all. Brazen disregard for the supporters hopes and dreams of supporters, one of the only things that is free of charge when it comes to supporting football – ripped away by a cold hearted **** who has no regard for football and the effect it has on the City.

For me, if there is no hope, dreams or ambitions then the miracle you talk about is just never going to happen.

  40. So the team will be the same as Saturday except Taylor for Haidara and Perez for Riviere? Perez actually does more defensive work so if he isn’t completely knackered I think Parver will put him in.

I wonder if John Carver knows that Ryan Taylor can take corners, he hasn’t really played for 2 years so he probably forgot 🙂

      (Quote)

  41. I don’t think anybody has any complaints about letting contracts expire this year as the players affected haven’t played (including the Rangers 5). The only one to keep would be Sammy. The problem is that we know we have a very thin squad so we know we need at least 3 first team players and some back-ups bought.

Next year, the main contracts to expire are Steven Taylor and Coloccini. I don’t think there would be any complaints about that except given Fatty’s track record there would be no replacement and we would have Perez at centre back. Coloccini would be 33/34 by then and happy to go back to Argentina with the bucketloads of cash he has earned at NUFC.
