Game On! Newcastle United v Manchester Utd

NewcastleUnited
Welcome one and all to this ‘Game On’ article which will take us through the highs and lows of our Premier league meeting with Manchester Utd this evening, St. James’ Park 7.45.
Theres not much to add to the preview except that it now looks like Haidara is now out of the game so should be replaced by Ryan Taylor’
John Carver has been speaking again in the lead up to tonights game. JC believes his squad is adequately prepared to face the Red Devils and sees no reason why his team can’t come out on top.
“I think everyone was feeling the pressure against Villa,”.
“I think there was a great reaction from the players though. We need to build on that and react again now as we face Manchester United.
“The fixtures coming up are a bit daunting, but they’re also exciting. I love a challenge and the players are up for it as well.
“We’ve discussed it and we’ve set a target for those games. We seem to really get up for it when we welcome the big teams to St. James’ Park.
“We’ve looked at Man United’s record away from home and it isn’t that great, so there’s no reason why we can’t get at their defence.
“They have some super players going forward but they are also vulnerable in certain areas and hopefully we can exploit that.”
Daryl Janmaat and Tim Krul will be no strangers to Van Gaal’s style of play after playing in his squad during the 2014 World Cup, where Holland reached the semi-finals.
“One or two of the Dutch lads have been giving me a bit of advice,” said Carver. “It was quite an interesting insight but I’ll keep that private for now.
“I think it’s difficult for Manchester United fans. They’ve seen how entertaining they can be always on the front foot and playing exciting football.
“Now Van Gaal has come in with a different style and lots of different systems. His principles are still the same they like a lot of possession but he’s a little but more patient.”
“you just have to think of when we went to Old Trafford and won 3-0. The stats then said we hadn’t won for what, about 40 years?
“I’m always looking at the positives. Why shouldn’t we get a good result again?”
So the time for talking is over and lets see the Lads putting up a fight and show a bit of pride and determination.

  1. Stuart man! Not giving anything up can be a good trait, but you take it too far. We have 40 players in the senior squad, even without counting the likes of Woodman, Roberts, Gilliead and Mbabu. FORTY players. Many of these are going to make no contribution whatever to the first team next season, either because they have never made it (Vuckic, Ferreyra, Satka, Streete, Campbell, Bibi, Ferguson), their time has come and gone (Jonas, Raylor, Marveaux, Elliott), or because we are moving them on to get some value from them (Santon, Tiote and Cisse). We are still then left with 26 players plus Darlow and Lascelles to come in. Quality is what’s needed man, a few proper players, not 14 replacements for the sake of it. I’m jusst poining out the magnitude of our failure to develop and mange the squad and the fact that this summer is a chance to cut out that dead wood, significantly trim the wage bill and reinvest. Question is, will we reinvest wisely?

  2. New deals for Sammy, Abeid, Aarons, Satka, Jonas and Raylor and we can get rid of Anita Gouffran Obertan, maybe even Tioté. And then go sign Kara Mbodjii, Daniel Wass and Andy Carroll for knockdown price, with Lascelles Darlow coming in, and recall Bigi and Vuckic for next season. And you are a manager away from having a good team

  3. Taking this answer from the minutes it seems to me they aren’t set on a new coach. Looking more like JC for the job with each passing day.

In the event the board should need to look for an external candidate in the summer for the position of Head Coach, the board would not have to start the process all over again due to the level of detail and work which went into the initial search.

  4. this is interesting too

    4. “What is the club’s position regarding the sale of land behind the Gallowgate End and will income raised be put back into the club?”

The board explained that the land has not been owned by the club or appeared in its accounts since before Mike Ashley’s time at the club. It is under the umbrella of Mike Ashley’s ownership, separate to the club. A public consultation has been called for 12th March, which is to assess the potential development of the site.

So the club get nowt if it’s developed only Jabba

  5. It would be fun to see how they tried to fit Carvers wanky record and coaching career to that job spec if he was appointed 😆

Garde ticks every single box, Has done from day one

  7. I hope that’s right, CC. For the first time in a few years there is a LOT of room for manoevre and still be able to deliver Mikey boy a nice profit. A new coach could be in a good situation:

Revenue from current TV deal flowing nicely
Promise of bumper revenue in future seasons
Prospect of almost all of the big earners from the early Ashley years off the payroll
Prospect of almost all the failed squad signings from early years of Ashley era off the payroll
Remaining squad that (desperately) needs 3-4 quality signings, rather than complete overhaul

    Not Carver. Please.

  8. Sorry, Eric I didn’t see your request for my ticket. The mother in law has it though I’m afraid. You could have had it for nothing too as I wouldn’t dare charge someone to watch that ****.

Interesting that the club say they will invest next summer. What they didn’t mention was who we have to sell to find the signings. My money is on Krul and Sissoko. Two steps back and one step forward, like every other year I would have thought.

  9. Stuart: That’s alright. I said I would offer what it is worth – nowt 🙂 I still think I will go though to one of the games when I am back.
