Keeping hold of the family jewels.

Transfer madness will soon be upon us and there will doubtless be endless speculation about our more talented players. Ayoze Perez has been linked with both Manchester united and Arsenal in the last few weeks, such has been his eye catching displays.

The player himself has now come out and spoken about the speculation and an article by Miles Starforth yesterday states, “When asked if he thought he could make another move soon, Perez told Diario De Avisos: “It would be a mistake to start thinking that now; it is too early. I’ve been at Newcastle for a few months and am very happy. I continue to work as usual and am in no rush. I just think about helping the team and returning all the trust the club has given me.” Reassuring words there from our young starlet, but as ever money talks and it’s always a worry if a big offer comes in that the club will sell, before we’ve even had the chance to really enjoy his displays. You could say the same for Sissoko and Janmaat too, with both catching the eye of the bigger clubs, the latter being linked with Liverpool just yesterday.

I’m fairly certain if we’d seen more of young Aarrons this season he’d be on the most wanted list too, the vultures have already had a sneak peek at him in his limited showing. It’s now completely transparent how the club operate as they confirmed in the latest fans forum minutes that they don’t envisge our young talents seeing us as their only club. But the reality is, that it’s better for the club if they desire to use us as a stepping stone as it’s profits first, football second, of that there can be no doubt now in my opinion.

Whilst this transfer policy benefits the clubs coffers it does little to effect matters on the pitch. For every Sissoko, Perez or Janmaat you sell, you simply must replace with their equal in order to maintain and even progress in the premier league. It seems to me that this is where the plan falls down as we are a bit hit and miss with the players Carr unearths and we do seem to collect a few terminal crocks along the way as well.

Rather than let our better players go all the time I would like to see us hang on to some of them for a few seasons so we can enjoy them and the young fans can develop a bond with their favourite player. Every young football fan needs their hero but it’s not much fun when they aren’t around too long. Why would you bother getting a name put on the shirt? What’s the point given the cost of a shirt nowadays?

In the end most of us would of had posters of players we idolised on our bedroom walls and they were mostly around long enough to foster a bond with, but it is a rare thing nowadays with the players that grace St. James Park. I feel really sad for the young fans just starting to go to St James Park as they won’t get the pleasure of having the heroes a lot of us had in days gone by. Should they decide to put up a poster on the bedroom wall of their preferred player, unlike a lot of our heroes, I would hazard a guess said player won’t be on the wall for more than one season.

  1. Pardew is getting Palace to play well against other poor sides. They will probably pass us in the standings if they have enough games left against bottom 10 sides. We play poorly against virtually every club (the only decent win I can think of with Carver was the 3-0 against Hull). West Brom will probably pass us as well with Pulis, so possibly we’ll finish 13th? Poor, very poor indeed.

  2. That sounds about right Eric @75. Fatty always plays the long con. Look at what he’s done to us. And many now just go along with it and say they’re happy with a dismal club.

  3. With such a poor set of sides in the bottom 10, if we finish 13th or 14th with around 40 points it will say a lot about Ashley and the club.

  4. Will Sunderland sack Poyet? If they get a new manager that doesn’t bode well for our match against them. Carver will play his usual defensive football. He has no choice really as we don’t have the attacking options he needs. I suppose we have a chance with Perez up front and Sissoko, and Cabella in behind. We’ll need good performances from everyone decent we’ve got left.

  5. Good to see Psychs still selling untruths about Pardew. So Pardew has been sacked from every club he’s managed. Go on Psychs name them. Bear in mind he was at the toon for 4 yrs and walked away when we were 8th. So that’s one he hasn’t been sacked but name all the other clubs.

  6. Cholo – I watched the Boro game today, and Bamford looks a very intelligent player. He reminded me a bit of Perez in his play, a very clever player but he won’t get 15-20 goals a season.

  7. Dave – Colback is back though isn’t he mate? – I guess that’s why Kemen has been brought into the senior squad though.

  9. But more than that, I want to see Sammy Ameobi play upfront with Ayoze Perez in 442, especially when Aarons returns. Or on right wing, with Cabella in N10 position

  10. My team for tomorrow would be:

    ———————- Krul ——————-
Janmaat- Colo – Willo – Raylor
Sissoko – Jonas – Colback- Sammy
    ——— Riviere —— Cabella ——–

  11. On the article, presumably we have kept hold of some of our better players, assuming you count Colo, Krul and Tiote amongst them. Considering some of our fans were claiming Colo was one of the best Cbs in the league and should have been in the team of the year in 2011-12 and others have said Krul is worh 20 mil (following that game against Spurs). Cisse is also raved about so we have kept those four at least for several years.

I don’t think any of them are particularly that great, but they are good enough for our level, which is top half PL standard. The key is to keep finding bagains and reinvesting the money, the strategy is sound but our implementation of it is **** poor most of the time, as we seem to wait until the pressure is on to invest.

  12. Troysta @82: I said he was sacked from everywhere except NUFC. Read what I wrote before you answer. Here is exactly what I said about Pardew @58:

“He has been sacked by every team he has managed except us”

  13. Troysta: I read his wikipedia thing and he wasn’t sacked by Reading. I have to admit I was wrong there.

  15. Woo hoo hoo hoo 😛 Psychs 😆

So he’s managed 5 clubs and been sacked at 3. Poached twice by other clubs. It’s a pretty average managerial record. Very few managers have better records having been managing for so long.

  16. I think Pardew has the best win % of all PL managers in the Ashley era. Says it all. Tenth is about where we belong and tenth is probably our average position since Pardew took over.

Anyway, today will be the most boring game of the season. Where are our goals going to come from? Perez, who’s scored about 4 goals all season? Riviere, who, well enough said? Colback 😀 ? Cabella, has scored a goal I think this season? Glad Everton are ***** and only won one league game this year.

  17. has poyet been sacked yet. 😆
odds on he will get binned the morra and a new man will come in and give them a lift for the derby.it would be nice to win a derby, fkin been along time since we won 1.

  18. p.s thats percys faullt total ***** manager.stu if you look back over all the managers not just the ashley era, percy has 1 of the worst win records.using your ashley era bollix isnt telling the hole picture, plus i think ch had a better win ratio.

      (Quote)

  19. Hitman – CH managed about 10 games in the PL for us! Other managers under the different eras had much more resources available to them so they should have a better win ratio than Pardew. Do you think Joe Royal, Mel Machin and Frank Clark have better win ratios at Man City than Mancini or Pelligrino?

Your foundations for your point of view are built on quick sand. It’s that basic it’s reflecting badly on you. Think about your statements before you press the send button.

Nobody is bigging Pardew up as a great manager but just pointing out to those who crucify him that he’s not so bad at all and in fact did a decent job at the toon under the circumstances.

  21. percy will go down in history as 1 of the worst managers in nufc history, the facts and stats back that up,and you 2 bellends carnt change that its all there for everyone to see.

  26. I can understand that Parsnip was a perfect fit for Mashley, by keeping us in the PL with an average finish of 10th.
What I don’t understand is why certain fans are happy with this.
And why they feel the need to constantly berate those who aspire and dream of better.
We have become a nothing team, that could and should be so much more.
After relegation and promotion, the plan was meant to be to re establish ourselves back in the PL and then improve season on season.
Yet another deception by the fatman.
Hoping for a bore draw today.
That is what we are supposed to aspire to these days isn’t it ?

  27. BB – I have been on here for years and years complaining about the lack of ambition of the club and that some fans seem to accept this. However, my defence of Pardew is simply based on my opinion that he did a good job under the constraints he has had to work under. Do I believe Fergie or Mourinho would have done a better job? Probably but only by a position or two up the league. You just simply cannot achieve anything other than mediocrity when you’re consistently selling your best players, consistently walking away from transfer targets because of the obsession with value in key areas and always making decisions that create an atmosphere of hatred amongst the fans and apathy amongst the players.

  28. I see another Billionaire is buying a football club. Palace are the latest club to be bought. Another club that could quite possibly overtake us next season if they invest.

  29. Stuart – that Percy went along with the clubs philosophy and even sold it to the fans is what repulsed me the most.
He would have gotten my support and respect if he had fought his corner and stood up for what was right, even if that had cost him his job (which I doubt).
That he became Ashleys ***** / rent boy is ever to his shame.
The 5th place finish was the perfect springboard to apply pressure to the board and to keep the club moving forwards.
Instead he became a ***** and the rest is history.

      (Quote)

  30. BB – Do you honestly believe Pardew said to the board after we finished 5th “I only want Anita, don’t bother bringing in a centre forward or a defender even though we’re letting 4 or 5 players leave”?

  31. has anyone else noted the marked ignorance of all things NUFC by the BBC and the media ? Listened to a BBC podcast this morning, Everton were mentioned, los and lots of blather about Martinez, the toon, there opponents weren’t even mantioned. How about some words about John Carver ? …nothing…. Again on a MOTD web site for today. The Toon Everton game was completely forgotten !
There again, we are an invisible zombie club as far as the media are concerned. Ashley getting paid back for his policies, perhaps the media are backing the toon fans after all by awarding Ashley zero exposure ?

  38. The only beneficiary of Pardews time at NUFC was Pardew; His career was in the toilet after how it ended at west ham & his spells at Charlton/Southampton. No sensibly run premier club would have touched him with a barge pole

Id give it a year. He usually starts well but “the king” seems to have a nasty habit of running out of steam quite quickly…
