Grow your own!

With no Premier League fixtures this weekend and only internationals, it seemed an opportune moment to write about the FA’s latest brain wave.
So it would seem the FA have come up with a scheme to deliver us a better, improved England football team somewhere in the future.
Greg **** has this week outlined proposals to improve the lot of the young up and coming English players. He wants the rules changed so that we have more home grown players in Premier League Squads.
Currently Premier League Sides are allowed 17 non home grown players and the new rules would reduce this to 13 and at least two would have to have been trained by the club.
All Premier League clubs will have up to 4 years to implement these changes which if they go ahead will start from 2016. Newcastle amongst others, namely Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and Man City all currently fall foul of the new rules, but as outlined we would have 4 years to address this.
Greg **** was due to meet with Premier League chairman this week to discuss this new proposal and I’m pretty sure he’ll face some resistance.
There has been quite a few articles in the press over the last couple of weeks talking about the demise (for want of a better word) of the Premier League. Various journalist have pointed out that the lack of big name foreign stars coming to the Premier League has impacted on it’s pulling power and ability to compete in the champions league. They argue that with more and more top stars now favoring a move to La Liga, the Bundesliga or French Ligue 1 or even Serie A in Italy; it means the entertainment of the Premier League has greatly decreased.
In so far as the Premier leagues appeal goes, then it would seem more Johnny foreigners are the order of the day, not less, so where does that leave England? Of course the FA and the Premier League will always be at loggerheads over one thing or another due to the fact that each body has very different aims. But when it comes to what’s best for England, it would be nice if they could work together.
I’m not so sure the lack of home grown is the reason for Englands poor performances at Euro and world cups, maybe the long hard season and lack of winter break has some impact. Also, we just don’t seem to produce the calibre of player other top teams do, and when we do produce one a whole world of pressure gets put on them. Indeed should they stub their toe, wreck a matertarsal or get a thigh strain the whole team collapses without them!
So if the press have it right about the imminent demise of the Premier league, what will the effect of the home grown quota have on the Premier League? Will fans be happy to see more local lads break in to the first team even if they aren’t as technically gifted as their foreign peers? Will it mean that say 10 years from now we have a more competitive England team? Over to you.

  1. Nice idea Aussie – but when did the club do nice? More likely they’ve done a deal to sell Krul and Sissoko 😆

  2. Anything remotely close to any comments regards the thread from Aussie? Thought not, just more rubbish.

What a waste of skin on his fingers all this tripe typing

  3. I was reading a page yesterday that Brightons state of the art facilities cost in the region of 30 million pounds.

  4. I don’t think it’s a bad idea producing our own players if we see the benefits out of it in the long run.

  5. Ashley is a very nice man that’s going to invest millions on players in the summer. April fools day

  6. Been waiting for more detailed information coming out before weighing in on the accounts, but it doesn’t seem to be arriving any time soon. It depends what is meant by ‘dodgy’. The money everyone can see was there cannot simply have been taken out of the club – that would not be signed off by any auditor. There are a lot of means by which costs can be brought forward, assets written off, sums put aside for capital investment etc, which would explain where the money has been piut, so that it minimised tax liabilities. Ashley hasn’t used the money to pay off debt, or otherwise taken it out, so he isn’t going anywhere. The more interesting question is to which use that money has been put – if we have simply brought forward costs / written doen asset values, then, effectively, we are taking from next years’ profit and there remains a lot of cash – uo to the £60m talked about last week – available to invest in a new squad. If a large sum has been put to, for example, revamp the training complex and SJP, then it cannot be availalbe for player signings.

  7. GTE Brightons state of the art facilities cost 30 million pounds and to be fair it looks better than our plans. It will increase the value of the club when he decides to sell up. I haven’t seen the accounts and can’t back it up with facts but it’s my best guess.

      (Quote)

  8. STEM – even if the estimates for profit were on the high side, we are left woth pushing £40m to account for from the period. They announced £18m profit, leaving £22m, say £20m to be kind to Mikey boy. I can see a good whack of that being set against current and future training ground costs. They could also have written off / depreciated the value of playing staff and current physical assets, which would represent an ‘exceptional charge’ taken in this year. I imagine it’s a bit of both. Either way, it reduces costs for the coming years and thus either paves the way for massivefuture profits, or squad investment and still decent profits.

      (Quote)

  9. Maybe the profits are correct and everyones guesstimations of our income are incorrect? People are pulling figures from left right and centre and putting them together to make up a number that may be way off the mark. There doesn’t have to be a sinister motive involved…. maybe some of the backyard accounting is flawed. ..

      (Quote)

  10. GTE 18.7 million is a profit but we should also have the 9.9 million pounds profit from the previous season. Lets say our new facilities cost more than expected this sometimes happens in the construction industry. 22 million pounds would explain on it where the moneys gone. Add the Santon and Mbiwa money that doesn’t come out till next year.

      (Quote)

  11. Aussie there should have been lots more money in the bank. 50 million was most people’s best guess. Where has 30 million pounds gone ? Not on player sells that’s for sure. The training facilities is the only thing I can think of and that’s being fair to Mike.

      (Quote)

  12. Stem, no one has any real knowledge of the clubs income mate. Everyone is simply guessing so until the actual figures come out, I won’t stress over the seemingly low amount of profit. Still would have preferred a striker and cb though, would of been helpful right about now!

      (Quote)

  13. Aussie, I’m trying to be fair to the club, and not jump on the ‘the greedy git has taken our money’ band wagon – because he hasn’t, and he can’t. The revenue increases were made clear by the club. Most people’s £40-50m profit was then based on ‘steady-state’ costs, based on us contunuing to shed high earners. Looking at the revenue increase, and the £18m profit announced, costs have to have increased by £25.5m – so the only question left os what those costs are – a ‘charge’ that effectively means that money remains availalbe for players next season, or a capital investment, like the training ground.

      (Quote)

  14. GTE, I know where you are coming from mate. The figures will make for an interesting read..

      (Quote)

  15. Aussie I wouldn’t say I’m stressing mate over the figures. I just think another CB and a proven striker would come in over the summer. Everybody needs a pre season confidence boast, myself included. I was also hoping for a proven free kick taker or a proven assist man. A proven mananger would be nice too. I hope it’s Garde because he gives younger players a chance and bring his coaches to the current set up.

      (Quote)

  16. QPRs finances are outrageous for a club of their size; Cant wait for the summer when that £50m fine ends up on their desk. I predict Fernandez goes to ground and slinks out the back door leaving someone else to pick up the pieces after his mismanagement.

    The callous media whoreing *****

      (Quote)

  17. Clearly there’s been a couple of one off payments which I imagine include the training ground for one. That’s a pretty big slice of it anyway. What the other purchases are I have no idea.

      (Quote)

  18. I don’t think Ashley has trousered any money but there is an obvious discrepancy in the increased costs that has to be explained somehow. There are many examples of semi-legal tax evasion by corporations here in the US and also in the UK. Many grey areas and loopholes that companies take advantage of and then dare the revenue services to challenge them and their army of high priced tax attorneys. Look at the Google case in the UK, for example. In many cases, accounting firms are paid to push deductions up to the limit and use off-shore tax-havens to see what the company can semi-legally get away with, so thinking E&Y are beyond reproach is naive.

      (Quote)

  19. Very intense Chris G. @215. I would just like to see the details which so far haven’t been presented. How did operating costs rise so quickly? I thought Ashley was a man who kept a very close eye on operating costs. I also know he has lied before a tribunal. I have also heard that companies have ways of hiding profits. That’s why Britain is introducing the new so-called Google law which prevents companies from moving untaxed profits overseas. I realize you think I’m an idiot but we have had a few issues with the owner previously. An auditor will do its job to the best of its abilities but you seem to suggest there are no ways in which companies hide profits. So I didn’t see your comment earlier or I would have responded sooner old chap.

      (Quote)

  20. That should read sorry I didn’t read your comment earlier Chris G. You sound like a very sensitive lad who trusts authority implicitly. I’m long in the tooth mate and I’ve seen what happens when people trust authority implicitly. Take a look at the history books. Or just go back to 2008 and check out what auditors were doing then with banks culpable of billions of pounds of fraud. Read and enjoy Chris.

      (Quote)

  21. Chris G: If you want to see an example of a crook running a football club look no further than Abramovitz. He made his billions from political connections with Yelsen and Putin and was basically gifted a fortune in Russian Natural Resource companies to the detriment of the Russian people. It was legalized stealing because of who he knew. I can’t be bothered to get into it, but look him up on Wikipedia. Same with the other Oligarchs and nefarious Thai businessmen. None of this lot would be beyond doing a bit of shady accounting and strong arming the auditors, would they Chris G?

Last time I was back 5 years ago I went into Sports Direct in Eldon Square expecting a shop like the old Dixon Sports or Lillywhites (I had never been to a SD shop). **** me, it was like a jumble sale with even more tat. That enlightened me as to how our owner was running NUFC.

  23. Eric@249, I’ve seen better jumble sales mate. Have a good time back in blighty . 😀

  25. I don’t believe Ashley has taken the money out of the club. But he also doesn’t spend wisely on strengthening the squad. That’s why we’re in the predicament we’re in. We have 2 wins in our last 10. Is that the performance of a competitive club? Does Ashley ever ask himself that question? Or what does he ask himself? Ashley to self: “when is this bloody boring game going to end? I’ve got better things to do including finding a good meal and some fine wine. Bloody Geordies moaning on about the team again.”

      (Quote)

  26. Since I’m an idiot it should be child’s play to put me in my place. The thing about getting personal Chris is that most of us on here stand up for ourselves.

  27. This statement from Mike is very interesting indeed. Challenge for top 6 and be in Europe every season? Very impressive Mike. Does this mean we can afford a decent striker and 2 good CB’s? No? How about another cheap young striker and possibly 2 cheap young CB’s? Challenge for top 6 with a head coach Mike? You’ve got to be joking son.
“Along with Managing Director Lee Charnley and Chief Scout Graham Carr and the new head coach when he arrives, we plan to make Newcastle successful on the pitch, as Lee Charnley alluded to on Monday is his statement accompanying the financial results.
“We also want to be more forthcoming and say that from now on, we want to challenge for the top six in the Premier league and be back in Europe again every season, as the Club was in the early 2000s.”

      (Quote)

  28. Anybody who thinks we’re going to challenge for top 6 every season while not even being capable of hiring a decent manager in January after Percy left is dreaming along with Mike.

  29. Apparently the statement was an April Fool’s joke. I wonder if our fool Mike Ashley read it and blushed? Not bloody likely.

  30. In my opionion, if intentions are to rebuild; sell Gouffran Obertan,Tioté, Anita, Willo, and probably Cissé and Coloccini will leave, Krul will leave if good offer comes. With Darlow future N1, we got to give a shot to Lascelles, bring Satka into the rotation, and Id love to see us sign an established PL defender, I think of Shawcross, but if they go foreign I want Kara or Schaar from Bale out of contract. If Saylor leaves, Curtis Good in or I want us to go for Lewis Dunk or Hanley. In midfield, keep Raylor in rotation, put Abeid for Anita, and sign Ben Pringle from Rottherham also out of contract, real set piece specialist, can score from free kick, can cross the ball, assist specialist, great left foot, can play CM, LW, LM, AM. Upfront splash the money on Bast Dost or Jordan Rhodes, and give to Sammy and Aarons new 5 year deals. Recall Vuckic and establish as de Jong backup in case he still injured

    ———————Darlow——————–
    -Janmaat-Lascelles-Kara-Dummett-
    ———————Colback——————
    ————de Jong——–Sissoko——–
    —Cabella————————–Ayoze-
    —————–Dost/Rhodes—————

Bench: Woodman, Dunk, Haidara, Abeid, Pringle, Aarons, Sammy,

then 3rd GK, Satka, Raylor, Kemen, Vuckic, Roberts, Ghillespie, Sterry, Smith, Heardman, Riviere if he got a second chance.

Give a goan season loan to Adam Armstrong, big future. Got a preference for Dummett as I feel a bit frustrated with Haidara, got more skills but at the end produces not much offensively, and Dummett plays harder and likes to defend. For the new captain, I all for Janmaat, Colback or Sissoko, for de Jong it may be too soon, got to play 1st. For the right winger role, we may look short, but Sammy would be even better in that position, Cabella can play there, Aarons , Sissoko too so we got options. But at the end:

In: Darlow, Lascelles, Dost/Rhodes, Ben Pringle, Schaar/Kara, Dunk(If Taylor leaves)
Out: Gouffran, Obertan, Colo, Willo, Tioté, Anita, Taylor, Jonas, Cissé if leaves.

      (Quote)

  31. Put competition between Dunk and Lascelles, keep options open on versatility of some, Aarons can plays both wings, Cabella too and also attacking CM, Sammy can play 3 roles upfront, Pringle CM, LW, Ayoze can play 3 roles, de Jong can play CM, AM, ST, Sissoko CM, AM, RM. Based on that potential transfert window, if Sissoko leaves, we’ll have to put Kemen on the bench and put Abeid from the start, and Pringle would be a CM sub, Vuckic still here waiting for his big chance too, we have to find a way to keep Ayoze, Sammy, Remi and Aarons hungry and bring the best of them next season if we want to compete and have a real strong team, with also an improved defense, and hopefully a good chemistry between Colback Sissoko and de Jong. And Darlow to step up as N1 if Krul leaves.

      (Quote)

  32. Put competition between Dummett and Haidara too, even if Dummett is my preferred choice.

      (Quote)

  33. It certainly doesn’t look like Jabba’s grand plan is working. Everyone we would like to compete with are making more money than us…

      (Quote)

  34. Dave ,How much tax got to come off that Palace figure? it’s pre tax profit it says. All the same Jabba hasn’t got much to crow about when you consider Saints and Palace are doing just as well while bringing in good players.

      (Quote)

  35. So the agents of Cisse, Tiote, Krul and Sissoko are briefing the press that they’ll be away in the summer. Who can blame them to be honest? Tiote would be no loss but losing the other three would be a problem as we would be looking at new players coming in and settling straight away. Hasn’t happened so far.

Another complete re build of the squad needed and unfortunately we don’t have the wherewithal or the intent to make it happen successfully. Will be the same as this summer. A weaker squad than the previous one and hoping that the three that come up are worse.

      (Quote)

  36. I can see us getting relegated next season. Sissoko would be a great lose but I wouldn’t miss Toite. Cisse’s nothing special but we would be in big trouble this season without his goals. Our main weakness is the back four. The table doesn’t lie. Ashley and Lee are hopeless at sorting things out. No frill kwik save crisps are back on the menu at SJP next season.

      (Quote)

  37. Dave, Yep the grand plan we have in place seems to only be on the financial front and even that’s not all that special. 🙄

      (Quote)

  38. I wonder if the more detailed accounts will be out tomorrow as they said, or will they keep them until after the mackems game ❓

      (Quote)

  39. We won’t be going after star players in the summer because Ashley now has wages down to 45% of total expenses. He plans to keep it that way. Star players cost big wages. Look for more foreign players to come in along with the 2 lads from Forest. Hard to say what kind of squad we’ll have next season. Definitely not a contender to win anything though.

  40. I originally thought Carver was nailed on for the toon job but having spoke to my mate, who gets in the directors area and bar, having spoke to Ashley & Charnley, I’m now convinced they have another coach lined up. All indications are is that McLaren is the one.

There’s still are cynical side of me that thinks it’s a ruse by the couple of charletons. My instinct says Carver will be appointed permanently but the info coming third hand tells me otherwise.

      (Quote)

  41. Don’t bet on seeing enough detail to sort out the real financial picture at the club Big Dave. It’s not Ashley’s style. He’ll only let out what he wants people to know about. The fact is the club is very profitable now but heading in the wrong direction on the pitch. That can’t continue for long in my view. Poor performances will eventually catch up with Ashley especially with his hands full of Geordie money that he won’t spend on an improved squad.

      (Quote)

  42. Whether it’s McLaren or anyone else Troy mate it won’t matter if Ashley is in charge. He doesn’t know how to improve the playing side of the club and doesn’t trust anyone who wants to spend significant money to do so.

      (Quote)

  45. That’s a little harsh on Carver G2 mate. Alex Furguson himself would struggle with these players.

  46. No, we clearly had a football genius on our hands and forced him out Terry mate. Why, in his last full season with us Percy won 4 games out of the last 19! That’s a win rate of 21%! Much better than Jonny C at 16.7. It’s clear we’re slipping Terry. I really do deserver a proper fonging for criticizing Percy. If only I’d know there was someone waiting in the wings who was even worse! It’s all my fault. Don’t try to convince me otherwise you lot!

There’s not even any banter at work these days.

  54. It still amazes me that people are bothered who the manager is. Does it really matter?

It’s the ambition of the owner that matters. The players are picked by Carr. The coach coaches them. We’ve all agreed the quality of the players is poor.

So whether a coach like McLaren, who can’t even guarantee Derby promotion is going to make much difference to Carver, is a simple no for me.

One, two or three places. Scrape a top 10. So what.

McLaren is no better than Pards.

I also agree with Troy, a manager makes no difference to a team. They have no influence or bearing on a game. Like he says, its the owners fault!

But then again, when you have people who profess to be fans and want the team to lose, and you get others who pour scorn on fellow fans for supporting the team, it’s difficult to fathom what goes on in the minds of some people.
