Blast from the past – Hughie Gallagher.

Hughie Gallacher, Newcastle UnitedThis series will take a look back at some of the original Newcastle United legends. With all the doom and gloom around our current crop of so called management and players, it seems a look back at some our old guard is in order. A little reminder of what makes this club a great one. A club with a tradition of having sublime players amongst its ranks. A club that has tasted success on multiple occasions and is engrained in English football’s history as one of the Giants. Maybe a little reminder of our proud history and past heroes will spur our current club representatives to have a little pride in the shirt and even try to emulate these Newcastle United legends. Maybe it will help convince Ashley to invest in some genuine talent for a change – and build a team round that talent instead of flogging it off. Or maybe the club will continue to be run like some cheap tat shop used as a giant mannequin to showcase Ashley’s personal business interests instead…
Hughie Gallagher was born in February 1903 in Belshill, Scotland. To give a little perspective to how much the world has changed since then, On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made four brief flights at Kitty Hawk with their first powered aircraft. The Wright brothers had invented the first successful airplane.
Hughie would play locally for Tannockside Athletic and Hattonrigg Thistle before signing his first professional contract with Queen of the South in 1920, the same year traffic lights, plasters and the washing machine were introduced to the world. He married the same year and had 2 children. The following year he joined Airdrieonians, scoring 91 goals in 111 games over a 4-year period and securing the Scottish Cup. By now he had split from his wife in the first of many personal problems in his life.
In March 1924 Hughie represented Scotland for the first time. He scored 5 goals in his first 4 games including twice in a 2-0 victory over England in front of 92,000 fans at Hampden Park. Imagine the atmosphere back then… Hughie’s form was so prolific that Newcastle United broke their transfer record when they shelled out £6,500 to land him in 1925 – the same year the humble television came alive. Gallagher would spend 5 years with the Toon and he was a screaming success.
In his first season Hughie netted 23 times in only 19 appearances, including 2 on his debut against Everton. He was made Captain the following season, scoring 36 times in 38 games helping Newcastle United to secure the First Division Title for the last time to date in 1926-1927. He would go on to score an impressive 74 goals in 103 appearances throughout the following 3 seasons. To date, no Toon striker has managed to match Hughie’s potency in front of goal when you compare his strike rate to his number of appearances – 82%. Total Toon stats: 174 games, 143 goals.
He continued to do well for his Country, securing a hat-trick against Northern Ireland in 1926 and being part of the team that thrashed England 5-1 in 1928. That Scotland team would forever be known as the ‘Wembley Wizards’ as a result of that game. You can see some of the footage here The link in the 1st Comment. As if that was not enough, Hughie would score all 4 goals the following season in a 4-2 win over Northern Ireland. He’d only represent Scotland 20 times, but he scored 23 goals and only lost one game.
Hughie is described as being two footed with a powerful and accurate shot. At only 5’5’’ tall, he was surprisingly good in the air and he was a grafter – getting stuck in for the cause. Despite his talent, he was also a hot head. He would fall victim to the referee’s wrath on a regular basis and got himself a 2-month ban whilst in Toon colours, something the Newcastle hierarchy and new coach Andy Cunningham were not impressed about. What had he done? Pushed the referee Mr. Fogg into the team bath of course! He was a heavy drinker off the pitch and got involved with a local Inn keeper’s daughter. This resulted in Court action against Hughie, who had assaulted the young lady’s brother who was not happy with a still married Hughie besmirching his little sister’s honour. Hughie would right this wrong, by divorcing the mother of his 2 children and wedding the young lady. Unfortunately, his divorce cost him in the region of £4,000 (over £200 grand in today’s money during a time that footballers earnt less than the equivalent of £25,000-a-year). He was in financial ruin.
By now penicillin and liquid rocket fuel had been invented. In 1930 Hughie was sold to Chelsea for a record £10,000. A £3,500 profit for the club. Mike Ashley would be proud. Toon fans were gutted to lose Hughie and set a crowd record of 68,386 when he returned to St.James’ Park with the Blues later that year. 20,000 fans had to make do with being locked out of the stadium.
Hughie still liked the drink and was actually accused of being Drunk & Disorderly whilst on the pitch. He claimed he had used whiskey as a mouth wash! He failed to land any silverware with Chelsea, but still managed a tidy return of 81 goals in 144 games for the club, was their top scorer for 3 years and saved them from relegation in 1933 – the year the electron microscope was invented. Gallagher was moved on to Derby County after this. At the time of the move, Hughie was in financial dire-straits and part of his move to Derby included the Rams clearing his debts. He found the back of the net 38 times in 51 appearances. He was now on the decline and turned out for clubs such as Notts County, Grimsby Town and Gateshead.
Hughie finished up his career just prior to World War 2 with 624 senior appearances, netting 463 times. His life would end in tragedy in 1957. He had thrown an ashtray at his misbehaving 14-year-old son Matthew and clipped him with it, drawing blood. He was in drink at the time and in the throes of depression. His wife had died in 1950 and Hughie had never gotten over it. Gallagher’s eldest son Hughie junior had just returned from a tour with the RAF and was not impressed with what his Dad had done. He took Matthew to a friend’s house and turned his Dad away the following day, telling him he never wanted to see him again. That was the last time the two Hughie’s ever saw each other and Hughie junior has regretted it ever since, insisting his Dad had never raised a hand against any of his kids on any other occasion. The day before he was due to appear at Court he threw himself in front of the York to Edinburgh train, losing his head in the process. At his inquest a letter of apology penned by Gallagher was read out. Part of that letter read: ‘I’ll never forgive myself for having struck Matthew, even if I live to be a hundred.’
Hughie is a true Newcastle United Icon. A record purchase, highest return in goals to games and the man that began the Cult status of the famed number 9 shirt. In the 1926-1927 season Hughie sealed no less than 5 hat-tricks in that famous black and white #9 shirt and his 36 league goals that year is a record that still stands today. Hughie is considered as one of the first true football celebrities. He liked the social scene, was popular with fans and was up-to-date in the fashion stakes. He’d walk around Tyneside dressed like a gangster in a broad-brimmed hat, double breasted suits and spats. On top of that, he had bag loads of skill and knew how to put a shift in. A true legend of the game.

As I said, it was the last match and in the last couple of minutes it was totally out of Man Utd’s hands, so of course everyone associated with the clubs would watch the last couple of minutes. But they shouldn’t watch the matches beforehand. They shouldn’t have the mentality that they want other clubs to do them a favour. They should focus 100% on doing their **** jobs and keeping the club in the Premier League.

But it’s still OUR CLUB! Are you saying we shouldn’t turn up and support the players to stay in the PL just because they aren’t all good enough?

If the fans don’t give a **** about NUFC staying in the PL, why the hell should the players?

  3. TDS: I totally understand why Carver is saying what he is saying. To draw a line in the sand and disguise his absolute shiteness so far, to imagine that he can start afresh and motivate the players that he has sinnularly been unable to motivate so far. It is a total fucking cliche used by serial losers like JC, trying to create a bunker mentality when he cannot even do that. Criticising and yelling at players at half time at Leicester had the opposite effect on the players and then he compounds the problem by launching into a tirade about Williamson to the TV. The man has no idea about man management – if you are trying to foster an us against the world approach you do not throw your allies under the bus – he’s a fucking idiot.

It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.”

I agree 100% that he’s a useless football manager and it’s galling that men like him and Kinnear will go down in history of having managed our club when better men never got the chance.

But…I still maintain that he’s right with this point. I can’t imagine Wenger, Fergie our Mourinho watching the matches of other clubs to see how they’re doing. They’d focus 100% on the things they can change and work towards it. Why do I want Carver wasting a couple of hours watching a match that won’t teach him anything. I’d rather he watched our previous match again and figured out some way of getting us to play better.

  6. TDS: Ed has that on the right side of his board. What does it have to do with Carver, or him not watching games, or his record, or him trying to draw a line in the sand about his record, or his insane ramblings (best coach), or his picking fights with players and fans, or his ignoring other teams’ results when they obviously impact NUFC, or his sucking Charnley’s ****, or his excuses, or him saying he is in pole position for the job full time then the next thing out of his mouth being that any other club would have sacked him?

When people say “support the team, not the regime” is Carver exempt?

  7. TDS attendance’s shouldn’t matter there supposed to be professional’s at the end of the day. They get paid more in one week than most fan’s earn in a year. If the fan’s don’t feel there getting value for money then the customers is always right. I do feel it would be better to get the win first and boycott against West ham.

  8. TDS @156: anything to take Carver’s mind off us would be a good thing IMHO 🙂 He has proven beyond doubt that he does not know what he is doing. We need a bit of luck and for results to fall our way to get out of this mess. Carver should stay on the golf course (or his preferred spot – the fucking dugout) because he is too scared to look at the fans in the face. Remember his quote from a month back when he said he was scared to show his face in town and that his only respite was on the golf course with Steve Stone? Maybe he could have used those couple of hours to get us the win that he didn’t get in the 3 or 4 losses since?Shirker, loser, ****.

It has to do with what the club actually is. And, as I’ve said, who gives a **** if he watches games that affect us??? What’s the point? It doesn’t help NUFC one bit and I want him and the players focussed 100% on getting the results for NUFC.

      (Quote)

  10. TERRY

I agree. I think we should support the club to make them safe, hopefully be safe before the last game and then 100% boycott it. Everyone. That would be a good message and show fan unity and power.

But I don’t think money comes into it. In fact, the opposite is true. Fans tried more for their clubs when they were earning a basic living wage than they do now, and they can easily go elsewhere and make a lot of money too.

      (Quote)

  11. ERIC

Same goes for the players. The minute that they think Carver is more focussed on hoping that other clubs around us lose than focussed on us actually winning, then they will fall apart. Not sure how that’s possible for them to fall apart even more than they have…but it might be…

      (Quote)

  12. TDS: read what you wrote “who gives a **** if he watches games that affect us” !!! Because they affect us, as simple as that. He says he is a fan and should be interested, no? He can spend time on the golf course because he is scared to show his face but then you say he would be wasting his time watching other matches and caring? Giving a ****, like the rest of us do. All the results matter. If it was purely in Carver’s hands then God help us.

      (Quote)

  13. TDS @162: did you watch the Leicester match? If that wasn’t falling apart I don’t know what is? They have no faith in the man. As someone on the Chronicle board said a pickled walnut with hair could do a better job.

      (Quote)

  14. ERIC

They affect us but that doesn’t help NUFC one bit. It must be stressful enough for Carver as it is with the situation we’re in and all the **** he’s getting, why would he want to subject himself to more stress? Better to get on the golf course and try to switch off in my opinion.

He needs to get himself and his players in the best possible state to win games. Focus 100% on that, not other clubs. Listen to all the best managers in the world and they would agree.

      (Quote)

  15. ERIC

Yes mate, he’s useless. But what’s the point in banging the same old drum. All I give a **** about at the moment is NUFC staying up. Carver can be proverbially strung up afterwards and the campaign can be renewed to get rid of Ashley. But all this griping is only damaging towards NUFC, demoralising for the players and potentially pushing us closer towards relegation.

Fans need to swallow their pride until we’re safe and give all they can for NUFC. We’ve given for a long time and haven’t often received as much in return, so for some it’s a big ask, but it’s still OUR CLUB and that shouldn’t be forgotten.

      (Quote)

  16. TDS @165: Better to get on the golf course and leave NUFC forever. I would listen to all the best managers in the world and agree that they would say focus is a good thing. Unfortunately Carver is aa bout as far away from the best managers in the world as you could get and his focus is on bigging himself up, touting for the job and falling out with all and sundry.

  18. ERIC

You’re continuously beating the same drum mate and I agree he’s useless, but what should he do? Quit and leave the job to someone even more useless? Or be a proud Geordie, work as hard as he can and do the best job that he’s capable of doing? He’s got to at least try and be the main man, but hopefully he’s told Charnley and Ashley privately that if someone better wants the job, he’ll step aside.

And he did say he thinks he’s the best COACH in the PL and not the best manager. And none of us can judge his abilities as a coach.

      (Quote)

  19. TDS: why should we get behind Carver when his is causing divisions within the club, squad and supporters. He is a laughing stock so why should he be defended by anyone? For the sake of the club and to avoid relegation, for unity? Do you really have any faith in this man? Him having no influence on the team is the best influence he could have.

FFS he says they work in training all week on set pieces and then says he could do better, and blames the players. The man whose pinnacle of his career was Whitley Bay and Gateshead says he would be better kicking the ball for them. Delusional gobshite ****** (DGW).

      (Quote)

  20. ERIC

We’re just going to have to agree to disagree here. I say get behind him because he’s the manager of NUFC and we want NUFC to do well. I say get behind him because NOT getting behind him is damaging to NUFC so it makes no sense to me. Forcing him out now won’t be good for NUFC because there is literally nobody better who would take the job right now. We’re stuck with him for 3 more games so I don’t understand why fans like you would rather direct your bitterness about the current situation with NUFC at a proud Geordie just doing his (inadequate) best rather than getting behind the team and protesting once we’re safe.

Your call. I just 100% disagree.

      (Quote)

  21. TDS says: “And he did say he thinks he’s the best COACH in the PL and not the best manager. And none of us can judge his abilities as a coach.”

YES WE FUCKING WELL CAN. He has 9 points from 45. He has lost 8 games in a row. He was responsible last year with Pardew for 6 losses in a row and us nearly going down. He was coach for I think 34 losses by 3 goals or more in his current tenure. He was supposed to be in charge of the attack and Pardew the defense and we scored one goal from a corner in 2 years. He has only one plan for a corner or free kick and that is to belt it to his ex-friend Williamson (what will he do this weekend 🙂 ) Need I go on…

      (Quote)

  22. TDS @171 says “I say get behind him because he’s the manager of NUFC and we want NUFC to do well.” Is he manager or coach, make up your mind man.

      (Quote)

  23. ERIC

He’s the manager until the end of the season. But he said he’s the best COACH in the PL. He might be a very good coach but he’s a **** manager…

He’s like a fish out of water.

      (Quote)

  24. And TDS: I am directing my ire towards JC because he is not up to the job and never was. He is in an alternative reality where he is the best coach in the PL and 8 losses in a row don’t matter. A fucking lampost would be a better manager/coach at this point. At least it wouldn’t go off of on a tirade before (Jonas), during (Leicester, Williamson and Janmaat) or after a match (Williamson) and undermine the confidence that it was supposed to be instilling in the team.

Yes, we should agree to disagree. But, I am still right 🙂

      (Quote)

  25. TDS: you and Troysta should get together and decide if JC is manager or coach because neither of you seem to know. Troysta even said a week or two back that it was too early to judge and now you are saying we should get behind an abject failure.

As I said, we might squeak a result but it will be despite Carver because all he has done is undermine the players and the fans. If he has a plan I have yet to see it and we are relying on the failure of others despite what you and Carvs say.

      (Quote)

  26. ERIC

He’s the manager of NUFC mate, whether you or I want him to be or not. I’ll support NUFC regardless of who is manager and what league we are in. When the season is over, I want Carver gone and I want an exit plan for Mike Ashley asap. But now, I’ll do whatever I need to to support NUFC and have them stay in the PL. Simple.

The words coach and manager have been muddled anyway. Maybe he is the best in the PL at coaching his players and giving them the fitness, mentality and skills to succeed. I don’t care about that. I just know that as far as man management, tactics, team selection etc. he is terrible.

But I still want NUFC to do well and I want him and the players to do everything they can.

I think you keep arguing a different point. I keep saying he’s rubbish but I’m saying I still get behind the club. I can’t quite tell if you’re just trying to wind me up…

      (Quote)

  27. TDS says: “And he did say he thinks he’s the best COACH in the PL and not the best manager. And none of us can judge his abilities as a coach.”

The point is, he said that sitting there as a MANAGER, not a coach. It hardly inspires confidence when he’s basically saying; ‘So yeah, I know I have cocked up the team’s chances of survival, am way out of my depth and can’t manage for toffee – but I’m a **** fine coach.”

Who gives a flying turd if he’s a good coach. It’s a manager we need and he had a responsibility to chuck the towel in when he had that chat with Charnley. He should have stepped aside and FORCED the club to bring a proper manager in, not a bloody coach.

      (Quote)

  28. TDS: I am not trying to wind you up at all. I just think there is no defense of what Carver has done or said. Getting behind him is pointless because he doesn’t know what he is doing. We will hopefully luck into a result like the Mackems did against Southampton (2 penalties) and stay up. I really hope so, but that will in no way invalidate anything I have said about Ugly John.

When you see lifelong fans like Ed and NUFC.com totally lose faith in “one of their own” it says a lot.

  29. This pathetic, Lilly livered and weak reasoning for turning up tomorrow is a joke!

Still waiting for a reasonable answer to my question; What happens when we’re in the same position this time next season? Is it ok for Ashley to keep treating us and the club like **** and we just come riding to the rescue for the final 3 games if every season?

      (Quote)

  30. Eric I’m more frightened of Carver getting the job permanently. It’s the sort of thing Ashley would do.

      (Quote)

  31. @Stuart79

I think many have already answered your question.

Dont renew your season ticket, don’t give him the chance to do it again. he has a lot to prove before fans start turning up again.

      (Quote)

  32. So save the club tomorrow by turning up and then abandon them next season by not renewing a season ticket? Not sure I understand that to be honest…

  33. To be honest I hope to return to SJP at some point but never while jabba is in control of our club, unless he has 100% turn about,so I guess I won’t be going back until he’s gone

  34. Well what do you suggest? apart from calling people pathetic, Lilly livered and weak 😛 Do what you think is best. no one is trying to convince you to go or stay away, we’re just voicing what we’d do.

Its obviously a difficult decision for anyone, I’m 55/45 to go.. if I had a season ticket but I can understand people not..

But then again, I want us to stay in the Prem more than you so my decision is based on getting a win by making it a decent atmosphere.

      (Quote)

  35. Ice. it stinks mate. I’m not going but if I had a ASeason ticket i’d be tempted.

I don’t even shop at SD now. my Dads crimbo presents are a right headache now. 😆

      (Quote)

  36. TDS: I thought you were trying to wind ME up about Carver mate. I thought it was obvious that he is as the Chronicle now continually tries to tell everyone “not fit for purpose”. Where was Lee Ryder when Carver was hired? Where was Lee Ryder 2 weeks ago when we had lost 6 in a row and he wrote an “opinion” piece defending Carver? Was Carver not “fit for purpose” from the beginning, or when he joined Pardew on his death spirals? Some on here asked me about Ryder’s opinion saying Carver deserved a chance and said it wasn’t journalism, not reporting, merely Lee Ryder’s opinion. Bollocks, it was Ryder sucking up to his paymasters and now he has finally seen the light and realises there is nothing he can say that can defend Carver. You should realise the same TDS, Carver is indefensible. We could win the next 3 games and I would still sack him because he lost 8 in a row and has us in this position because of his incompetence – there were many mitigating circumstances but that does not deny that he, Carver, is incompetent.

      (Quote)

  37. Oh ****, perhaps Ryder was saying that the squad is “not fit for purpose” and is still sort of defending Carvs after all the evidence is in? I have tended to skip Lee’s fawning puff pieces recently. Maybe if we lose this weekend he will write “5 things I knew but never said about my mate Ugly John”?

      (Quote)

  38. So Antia says Carver like to play the long ball game and told them to use long ball against the scum he knew it would fail because of the way the scum manager likes to play the game, have to laugh as for the past few games we cannot string two passes together ffs

      (Quote)

  39. Icedog: hoof it to the shortarses Anita, Perez and Cabella 🙂 Great Ugly John, that’s a plan. Still, couldn’t be any worse than the free kick and corner routines to Williamson whose feet seemed to be glued to the turf but they do it anyway.

When I say it couldn’t be any worse I mean when Krul hoofs it the ball comes straight back from the oppositions 3 tall central defenders who are placed on their 30 yard line specifically for that purpose. For corners and free kicks it is where the opposition put 2 tall players on Williamson specifically to generate a fast break and score (especially if NUFC are a goal down), see Sunderland, Spurs, Leicester to name a few.

But, with such great tactics Carver deserves another go at it 🙂

  56. Do you lot have a lost and found section, we have a seriously demented poster going by the names of Blackley and Brownlie, he keeps talking bollox but every now and then he mentions this place like a place he might have been fond of. He seems dazed and confused but comes alive when we mention here. Do you want him back ?

  61. Roy im surprised at you mate I thought you would have been a boycotter for sure 😉 but I do understand that this one is a hard decision for the fans, but do me one favour make your presence felt and make some noise, as that is the only reason for me that fans should turn.up.

  62. Roy 😆 as I said I understand if you feel you need to go to support the team, but you need to make some noise, then you wont feel guilty cause you know you tried to lift them. And on the plus side if we get something out of the game you will feel that it was worthwhile.

  63. I think there’ll be a huge drop in ticket sales for next season, even if we stay up. I think this is bothering the regime a lot. They’ll see the lack of season ticket up take and will be panicking a bit.

  64. Big Dave – I thought the people in the corporate boxes weren’t allowed to make a noise. Just like they can’t wear the strips etc.
