Game on! Newcastle United V’s West Brom

A warm welcome to West Bromwich Albion
A warm welcome to West Bromwich Albion
Welcome one and all to this ‘Game On’ article which will take us through the highs and lows ( Of what JC has billed as the most important game in 6yrs ) as we play host to WBA in this afternoons Premier league game (3pm kick-off), We go into the fixture on the back of a 3-0 defeat at Leicester City, which saw us finish with just nine men following red cards to Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat. That was the eighth successive top flight defeat for us.
When the sides met earlier in the season, we came away with a 2-0 victory from the Hawthorns.
Ayoze Perez’s brilliant flick on the stroke of half-time broke the deadlock before a Fabricio Coloccini header sealed all three points for the United.
Speaking ahead of the game John Carver said “West Brom are a very organised side under Tony (Pulis) and they are a huge threat from set plays,” said Carver.
“Manchester United found it very difficult to break them down but we are the home team and we need to win the game.
“It’s going to be very tight. I can’t see there being too many goals looking at our record and at theirs, but we are determined to find a way to win on Saturday.
“We have had a bad run of games but I’ve seen enough from the lads that they want to be productive and they want to do something about it.”
Despite the other teams at the foot of the table picking up points from their recent fixtures, Carver insists he remains focused on Newcastle’s games and no-one else’s.
“I’m not worried about anyone else’s results. We are in the position where we can affect what happens,” he continued.
“It’s in our hands – we are not one of the teams in the bottom three. We can’t afford to worry about what everyone else is doing.
“I don’t think about what the teams are doing below us because I can’t affect that in any way.
“I’m going to focus all my effort and all my concentration on what I can do at this football club, and the earlier we can get results the better – starting with this weekend.”

  1. Oh, and my glass is actually 3/4’s full. But it won’t be for long. Anybody who watches our games needs a stiff drink or two. Come on TDS, have a larf at yourself.

  2. Troy mate, can you have a word with TDS? He doesn’t seem to be responding well to me. Was it something I said? No it couldn’t have been because I always come back to banging the same old drum. I thought it was Ashley, Charnley and Carver who did that.

  3. It’s not whether your glass is half full or half empty. It’s what you do with the contents that matters.

  4. Jill was thinking of the 74 cup final earlier in the week. My niece was born that day, she arrived a bit early after her dad (my brother)had gone off down to Wembley against his wife’s wishes, so you can imagine the grief he got lol. We were all so full of hope for a great match. Supermac had been giving it large all week on what he was going to do to the scousers, but as ever in our more recent ventures to Wembley we crashed and burned. Homecoming was amazing though. Remember going up there think it was the Monday evening and from recollection they let us in the ground at the end of the parade. Are we destined to be the perennial losers?

I don’t always sit in front of the PC mate…

I didn’t watch the game because I’m not in Newcastle now and neither am I abroad to watch it on a foreign channel. So I can’t comment on the match itself beyond what I heard on SSN. I also know that we had more possession and more shots, but apparently seemed to lack a cutting edge. For me, that indicates a lack of confidence and the players being nervous. They’re bound to be.

  6. Geordie Deb #306 Yes, I believe we probably will be perennial losers, certainly have been in my lifetime. But I think that makes the fans stronger! It’s easy to support a team that wins all the time but it’s bloody hard to be a NUFC supporter! I remember being a little kid and following NUFC and my neighbours and school friends would just keep swapping who they said they supported depending who was top of the league at the time! How often I wished I could be like them! I actually wondered if we somehow enjoyed the pain of following NUFC. Because I’m in pain with the club all the time, yet I still can’t stop! Hmm wonder if there is some kind of addiction help group to help me give the club up. Oh yeah, that’s right, that’s what Ashley is doing!
