Newcastle United 2 – West Ham 0

Newcastle United v West Ham United - Barclays Premier LeagueJonas Gutierrez scored his first goal since winning his battle with cancer as Newcastle United beat West Ham United 2-0 to avoid relegation on an anxious final day of the Barclays Premier League season.
A run of one point from 10 matches had plunged the Tyneside club deep into the mire, but Moussa Sissoko’s header nine minutes into the second half put them on course for a first victory since the end of February as Hull City dropped into the Championship.
Jonas Gutierrez, who laid on the opening goal, then sealed it with a deflected strike five minutes from time in a fairytale end to a season to which he had returned after overcoming testicular cancer.
Newcastle head coach John Carver said it would be unthinkable to take his hometown club into the second tier and he was able to savour a victory, while former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has taken charge of West Ham for the final time with the club confirming he will not be offered a new deal.
Newcastle’s leading scorer Papiss Cisse made his first start since early March, while Mike Williamson and Vurnon Anita were also recalled as Ayoze Perez, Ryan Taylor and Remy Cabella were dropped to the bench.
Allardyce made two changes to his starting line-up, with former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan and Reece Burke replacing the injured Mark Noble and James Collins.
Newcastle made an encouraging start and Emmanuel Riviere was presented with a great chance to put them in front inside a minute, but snatched at his shot from close range.
Enner Valencia appealed for a penalty when he went down in the area moments later, but Williamson did not appear to make any contact and referee Martin Atkinson waved play on.
Riviere acrobatically volleyed into the side-netting and Daryl Janmaat dragged a strike wide of the far post as Newcastle attempted to ease the tension.
Newcastle’s hearts were in their mouths when Stewart Downing raced into the penalty area 23 minutes in, but Tim Krul denied the winger, and the home supporters became increasingly edgy as their side failed to open the scoring in a frantic first half, with the match at Hull still on a knife edge.
Riviere had another golden opportunity to make himself a hero five minutes into the second half, but was unable to make contact with Janmaat’s cross from around six yards out.
St James’ Park erupted just four minutes later, though, when Sissoko met Gutierrez’s fine cross from the left with a downward header to put Newcastle in front.
Gutierrez then raised the roof by unleashing a strike that deflected beyond Adrian and celebrated in style as Newcastle ended the season on a high note.

Also before the game we had the surprise of Mike Ashley giving his 1st media interview, speaking about his plans for the future at St. James’ Park and his determination to bring success back to the Club.
When asked where the blame for United’s poor season rests, Ashley simply replied: “My door.
“I didn’t envisage us being in this position at Christmas. Obviously, after the last couple of weeks I’m still a little bit shocked at where we find ourselves today.
“(But) I will continue the policy of investing in the football club.
“We have got the club on a very sound financial footing, so we are able to spend and punch above our weight thanks to the current financial situation the club finds itself in.
“We may have the cart, financially, but we now need to bolt the horse on, and we are going to.”
When quizzed about his intentions for the future, Ashley said: “To definitely win something and, by the way, I won’t be selling (the Club) until I do.
“(The club is not for sale) at any price. And when I say ‘win something’, if we ever get into a position of being in a Champions League place, that also counts as winning something.
“From this day forward we will be making our own luck.”

  1. Sorry for the delay was hoping to have something for 1st thing this morning, but due to the daughter going into labour at 4am and me being on baby sitting duties this is the 1st chance I have had to get a quick thread up, before going to see the new Grand daughter in a while.

  4. Shamrock cheers mate. yeah it ended up being a day I will remember for all the right reasons, instead of the day I was dreading. I am just hoping that today is the start of a new chapter for our club.

  5. Well done Dave. This from last thread;

I think I said we would finish 14/15th. Just didn’t think it would be quite this close to relegation…

But anyway, where do we need strengthening? I think before anybody leaves we need: 1 decent striker, 2 x centre halves, 1 x creative midfielder and 1 x winger. But I also expect Krul, Tiote, Sissoko and Cisse to leave which means we need to replace them too. So we could need to bring in 9 players. Big ask! Even bigger ask if we continue to want value over everything else.

  6. Dave – congrats on the new arrival mate ;-). Any thoughts on names yet? – Ashley or maybe Jocey (closest I could think to JC)

  8. As for a new coach ,well here is one that nobodys picked up on . Bert VanMarwijk ticks all the boxes He is by all accounts hoping for a chance in the EPL is a success coach worked wonders at Feyenoord on a shoestring budget and would be free too join as he has no club at the minute .Well let’s see if fatty really meant anything he said in that interview but Van Marwijk would definitely be the Horse that could get the cart moving .

  11. Never heard of him Adel, but that’s my ignorance Coming through. I’d take any highly rated ambitious European coach, as the UK pool of managers is not exactly blessed. A foreign coach would suit of pool of players better too in my opinion.

  13. Axel – it seems a Dutch manager is the current in thing in the PL with LVG and Koeman, so he could be on the radar mate. We were on about De Boer so they have looked at the Dutch league I reckon.

  14. axel, good call mate, van marwyk would also be a good call, and has the pedigree and status to move the toon forward.

  15. Thanks for all the kind words 😉 Sharpy on names 😳 Willow I know I know I said she should burden the wee girl with a name like that .
I was hoping to not here about Willo again 😆
Stu some of them players for me will be easily replaced, Sissoko for me has been a big big let down, and has only had a handful of good games, Krul I don’t know what has happened him lately he has been very average at best, but maybe having a poor back 4 in front hasn’t helped, Tiote well I don’t really need to explain. but yeah if they go they will need replaced along with strengthening an already weakened side.

      (Quote)

  16. axel, you know how it is mate, my old cloggy mate used to say “if you aint dutch you aint much”.
the more i think about it the more i like it. didn’t van marwyk manage holland atvthe last world cup ?
he’d have us playing posession football too, something which we have struggled with for years imo

      (Quote)

  17. big d maybe krul’s time has come to move on mate.
he has been a great servant to the toon, if we can make 15 mill from him with a new goalie stepping up, like young woodman, then why not ?

  18. congratulations to granda dave 🙂

  19. Dave – 😆 that’s brilliant. It conjures up thoughts of the Iron Bru adverts – have you seen those?. The wife gives birth and tells the fella she’s calling it Fanny – he drinks Iron Bru & it becomes more acceptable. I can imagine that being you with Willow 😆 😆

I’m sure she’s gorgeous mate, and hope both mum & baby Willow are fit & well 😉

      (Quote)

  22. Was Jonas or Anita MOM? Anita’s performance reinforces the idea that we’ve been really poor at getting the best out of the players we have. Anita, MYM, Benny, even centre forward Gouffran. We need a good coach/manager before anything else.

      (Quote)

  23. After yesterday I truly hope Ashley sees the benefit of speaking out in person now and again.
For some time now the papers have portrayed him as some kind of Bond villain who didn’t give a **** about NUFC and was happy just to **** the toon fans off. But after only a 3 minute interview he changed public perception and breathed a bit of hope back around the place.

There is a lot to do, and I don’t expect miracles overnight or even in just 1 transfer window. But providing we see things going in the right direction, then I’m prepared to believe his intentions.

      (Quote)

  24. Georgio – are you seriously going to try and take that off Jonas?! 😯 😆
Anita was superb. But with an assist, and goal on probably his last game for us, and everything he’s gone through this year – it has to be Jonas.

      (Quote)

  25. It was not the goals. Jonas drove us yesterday. Largely neat in possession, great link up play and chased everything. Give him a years deal.

      (Quote)

  26. Sharpy – I don’t think we will hear too much from him to be honest. He didn’t look comfortable and it’s not hard to see why he doesn’t do interviews. He could do a written interview though.

But it’s not just about buying players. The whole club needs to change. We need to have ambition, we need to have better people in key positions but we just need to be a football club and not just a business.

      (Quote)

  27. Agreed Stuart (and Sharpy). Ashley looked seriously relieved yesterday. I was as surprised as Charnley. Maybe he will change it. We’ll see. New good manager first and quick!

      (Quote)

  28. regarding the – ashley suprise interview.

i’m sure this has been penned in for a few weeks now – a well rehearsed 2 minute questions & answers for the live sky cameras.

it’s – the bishop – earning his corn.

this is just ashley’s latest con – don’t be fooled.

      (Quote)

  29. Defenders – Virgil van Dijk, Boyata, Micah Richards and Neil Taylor.
Midfielder – Leroy Fer, Andre Ayew, Nathan Dyer
Forwards – Charlie Austin, Danny Ings

      (Quote)

  30. On Krul, we should keep him. He is still a very good shot stopper. A new coach can work on his distribution. I think a new coach that is not obsessed with goofball will fix that issue quite easily. Plus Krul is home grown. If we really are Gona get ambitious again, we will need home grown players.it would cost a lot of money to find a keeper that is as good a shot stopper as Krul combined with tip top distribution.

      (Quote)

  31. Stu – I don’t want to hear from him as regularly as we see the likes of the WHU owners or the fella that had Wigan for example. But the good thing with that interview is that the press can’t twist his words like they can with a written statement. His actions need to speak louder now for me, but a 3-5min interview with Sky once every season or every other season isn’t too much to expect I reckon.

      (Quote)

  32. Sham – I’d keep him at least one more season – unless we get a £10m plus bid for him. To be fair to Krul, the defence in front of him most of this season has been truly gash. Darlow may offer more competition in nets as well I reckon.

      (Quote)

  33. I’m not impressed with the players you choose there, Sharpy. They look decidedly average to above and are just basically players to keep us mid table.

      (Quote)

  34. @6
“I think before anybody leaves we need: 1 decent striker, 2 x centre halves, 1 x creative midfielder and 1 x winger. But I also expect Krul, Tiote, Sissoko and Cisse to leave which means we need to replace them too. So we could need to bring in 9 players”

Ok, so you’re saying that we could need to bring in these 9 players:

    1 Replacement for Krul
    2 New CB 1
    3 New CB 2
    4 Replacement for Tiote
    5 New creative midfielder
    6 Replacement for Sissoko
    7 New winger
    8 Decent striker
    9 Replacement for Cisse

I assume that they’d all be aged 21 and over, in which case you would end up with a total of 37 over-age players when all of these are included as well:

    10 Darlow
    11 Elliot
    12 Alnwick
    13 Janmaat
    14 Haidara
    15 Dummett
    16 Ryan Taylor
    17 Coloccini
    18 Steven Taylor
    19 Williamson
    20 Lascelles
    21 Curtis Good
    22 Abeid
    23 Anita
    24 Jonas
    25 Colback
    26 De Jong
    27 Marveaux
    28 Obertan
    29 Cabella
    30 Bigirimana
    31 Ferguson
    32 Vuckic
    33 Gouffran
    34 Sammy Ameobi
    35 Perez
    36 Riviere
    37 Ferreyra

so in order to fit everybody into the 25 man squad next season you’d need to offload AT LEAST another 12 of those players (in addition to the 4 that you’ve already mentioned). And when you’ve decided which players you want to get rid of (or send out on loan) you’d need to check that you’ve included enough players in your squad who qualify as home grown.

It’s not quite as straightforward as it seems, is it? Let’s just hope that Charnley is up to the task next time round.

      (Quote)

  35. Well actually Chris, assuming the likes of Vuckic, Ferguson, Bigi, Ferreyra, Ameobi, Taylor, Jonas, Marvauex, Alnwick and Abeid will also be going. Some out of contract and some just not good enough.

So all in all its not as difficult as you think.

      (Quote)

  36. There was talk after Pardew left that Van Marwijk was the “mystery” candidate the press were referring to

Just has to have some credibility this next one, Southampton & Swansea have managed to attract trophy winning coaches in recent years while we **** around with desperate chancers…

      (Quote)

  37. Sham@29, agree 100% with everything you mention regarding Jonas there..

@35, regarding Krul, I don’t necessarily agree. We have brought through Krul, Foster, Woodman and Alnwick in the last 5-10 years. I reckon in the goalkeeping side of things we are doing something right…and see no reason to change things. Woodman and how his son is treat are the clue on that front… though I can see Woodman junior perhaps moving on due to lack of opportunities, though he still has a couple of years at the toon left in him..

  38. Congratulations Big Dave ( Big grandpa ) and best wishes to your daughter & family 🙂 By the way, Willow is a smashing choice too.
Thanks for finding time to do the thread, good read, make sure you take time out to wet the babies head.

Well that was a very nerve racking afternoon, eased at the end by the wonderful and inspirational Jonas. He was MOTM by a country mile, ran the whole game and never give up, a trait he has always had imo.

What a shocker to hear Ashley finally speak too. He came across better than I would of expected but as Big Al said last night, he now has to prove that it wasn’t just words.

Sorry JC but we need a forward thinking progressive coach now. You kept us up in the end and I thank you for that, but it’s time to step aside now.

      (Quote)

  39. MM I’m not sure what you mean at post 42? Are you saying let him go? We have no better keeper at the club and have very little in terms of home grown players, especially when Ferguson, Bigi, Raylor, possibly Willo, Saylor and Vuckic go. Alnwick won’t make it and Elliott will probably leave with Darlow coming in.

      (Quote)

  40. Stu – we finished 15th in the league narrowly avoiding relegation. What type of player do you realistically think we are going to attract at the moment

      (Quote)

  41. If we want to do something bold this is the perfect time to do it. The three Cs – Charnley, Carr and Carver has to be seen as a failed experiment. Get Carr and Charnley back to their former roles and get Carver in charge of the Car Park. Then comes the hard part of selecting a manager and someone to liaise with Ashley because Fatty has made it clear he isn’t going anywhere.

      (Quote)

  42. Oh, almost forgot. Congratulations Big D, and I thought your willo comment was very funny. Don’t worry though, Mike Williamson will be a distant memory by the time your grand daughter gets to school age.

      (Quote)

  43. Sham@44, I’m disagreeing with you at 35 when you say we should keep Krul. I have the feeling that he has left the room so to speak. Having been here since he was 16 may be the time to let him go, for both him and the club.
I agree he is a good shot stopper and the best goalie we have at the moment…

It wouldn’t surprise me if Krul left, perhaps we will see a final year out of him, as his contract runs out in June 2017. Maybe his head has been turned by what is happening at Man Utd with his mate LVG ?

Not I’m only talking about goalies mate, not outfield players.

  46. The interview by Ashley is exactly what every toon fan has wanted to hear for the past 8 yrs.

Could this be the turning point? I’m strangely hopeful. He’s made a commitment and an ambitious one.

I’ll be back next season if his words turn into actions over the summer. Fingers crossed.

      (Quote)

  47. This has been the cliched roller-coaster of a season. All I feel now is relief. We have played some atrocious football and somehow finished 15th. Time for a new beginning.

      (Quote)

  48. I agree, Troy. Only acting like a football club will get me back next season, regardless of who the owner is.

Whether is actions match his words only time will tell. He has backed himself into a corner somewhat so let’s see.

      (Quote)

  49. I think we have to decide whether we are a passing team and do the high press or not. Pardew tried to do this at the start of the season but with Krul and Willo there was always going to be a problem. We have to get an identity as a team and that starts with the Manager. I don’t mind having a battering ram center forward like Austin or Ings, but don’t try to be what you are not. Recruit some players that are suited to a style that we can play.

      (Quote)

  50. MunichMag yeah Van marwijk was the Dutch coach that got them to the final and lost too Spain but it was in South Africa .LVG was the manager for them at the last WC
Sharpy their was rumours a while back here in Holland we were sniffing around DeBoer .for me though VanMarwijk has more pedigree he’s has much more experience and all at big clubs in big leagues and been a National team manager with some success .

      (Quote)

  51. Congrats Big Dave 😀
Jonas MOTM for me. Give the lad another contract. I thought Anita made some wonderful interceptions too and that Sissoko was immense. It was nice to see Sissoko in the mood to play and with the kiss of the NCL badge at the end! It was very interesting watching players, subs and staff faces when goals were scored, and when the game finished, to see who looked delighted and who seemed not so happy! I thought all the players tried hard and looked good with the exception of maybe Cisse not contributing as much. Interesting to see who was on the bench and not brought on as subs. Am I reading too much into that? What are your thoughts?

      (Quote)

  52. Axel- Van Maarjwiik is a definite nom he only had success with Feyenoord but failes in major leagues, and failef with Holland despite the players he had. No better than Pardew for me.

  53. I want Charlie Austin, Andre Ayew, Michael Carrick to replace Cissé, Sissoko and Tioté. I want us to jeep Abeid and Vuckic even if it means Anita off, I want Kemen in the mix and a new CB.

  54. If Colo and Jonas leave, I want that team or something like that, with Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina and who played for Sunderland on loan, quality and tall spanish left back, I want Tavernier back, Charlie Austin, Andre Ayew and Michael Carrick, with Lascelles Darlow in and

    ——————Krul—————-
    -Janmaat-Lascelles-Dummett-Alonso-
    —————–Carrick————–
    ———-Colback—–de Jong——-
    —-Ayoze——————Ayew—–
    —————–Austin—————

Subs: Darlow, Good, Tavernier, Abeid, Vuckic, Aarons, Armstrong

Reserves: GK, Saylor, Sterry, Smith, Kemen, Obertan, Riviere, Roberts

      (Quote)

  55. Congrats Grandpa Dave 😛

Agree with the Troyster@51, time will tell if Ashley’s words mean owt.

      (Quote)

  56. Kimtoon @ 56 the AshleyOut campaign doesn’t come across very well in that article. It makes the campaign sound petty and insulting unnecessarily.
I’m not a fan of Ashley but was glad he at least tried to talk to the fans. The proof will be in the pudding as to what he does this transfer season. But I’m willing to wait to see what the outcome of the Summer transfers is.

      (Quote)

  57. Hypothetically this is what I would love to happen.

We get rid of the dross

    Alnwick
    Williamson
    R.Taylor
    Ferguson
    Tiote
Anita (good yesterday but not done enough throughout the season)
    Marveaux
    Gouffran
    Ferreyra
    Riviere

    Then sell
    Cisse for 8m>
    Tiote for 6m>

Ashley decides that of the £100m> revenue, 70m is put forward for transfers. We convince Klopp that this is a club he can bring back up to glory with freedom in transfers, giving him 5-7m.

    We then bring in

Micah Richards (can play RWB, RB & CB and is British) free transfer
Ryan Shawcross (old but class and we need a strong experienced British centre-half) 8m
Splash the cash for Klopps former CB Nevan Subotic 12m (probably less)
Leroy Fer (CDM, CM & CAM) 8m
Andre Ayew free transfer (I think)
Charlie Austin (British prolific CF) 10m
Danny Ings (Good British CF) 10m

So we could have a team that looks like

    —————————Krul———————–
    -Janmaat-Subotic-Colocinni-Jonas-
    ——————Fer———Colback———–
    —-Cabella——–Sissoko——-Ayew—-
    ————————Austin———————-

Subs: Darlow, Shawcross, Richards, Dummett, De Jong, Perez, Ings

The rest of the players can be switched in and out depending on form and fatigue/injury(Shawcross and Richards would likely need to switch in frequently).

Would like to see Vuckic get some game time so keep him but release or loan other players that aren’t likely to get game time/ to shorten team number to 25.

This is what I would like to see happen but know nothing like this will happen, we’ll probably get McLaren, keep the ****, sell the assets and bring in a mediocre striker and a okay-ish midfielder and the club will claim they were spending within their “means”.

  60. First off, congrats to Big Dave on the birth of your grandchild. Hope mom and baby are healthy and doing well.

Been out of town celebrating Memorial Day all weekend so this is my first chance to comment on an eventful day. I was obviously very pleased with the effort from the lads. I thought Jonas, Janmaat and Anita 😯 really shined and it was wonderful for Jonas to score the clincher. Absolutely massive performance from the fans. It’s been awhile since SJP sounded like that (on TV at least) and hopefully it showed the players and management just what SJP can be like in a big big match. Let’s hope for many more such nights though under different circumstances.

Very pleased to hear from Ashley and I must say there is a feeling that things are about to change for the better. It feels like the dawn of a new day for me. But to be perfectly honest I just don’t trust Charnley to pull it off. It is impossible to overestimate how important the coaching hire is. He simply has to get it right.

HWTL and roll on the new season!!!

      (Quote)

  61. Firstly, congrats on Big Dave grandchild… Many more to come. 😉

Next, not sure anyone share the same thoughts with me. But the club is seriously in shortage of defenders…. especially Centre-backs.

Hopefully, the club is sensible enough to realise this and start finding Defensive covers first and foremost rather than Attacking players.

Just take a look at our current First-team Centre-back.

    Steven Taylor- contract ends 06.2016
Fabricio Coloccini – contract ends 06.2016
Mike Williamson – contract ends 06.2016

Anyone still believe this 3 Centre-back will stay on? We have injury prone Steven Taylor, Coloccini mind is always back home.
Mike Williamson is just simply good as back up.

Ryan Taylor – contract ending 06.2015

Remie Streete – contract ending 06.2015

Paul Dummett – contract ending 06.2017

This season he has been clumsy but in previous seasons he has been one of the best in the league (the season we finished fifth he was only begin Hart in saves and cleansheets). A couple of seasons ago we couldve gotten 15-20m for him, now about 10, I think he can get back up there so when he leaves it will be for big money.

      (Quote)

  63. AoD
Agreed, of those only Dummett and Streete should get extensions, we need to bring in more defenders, particularly versatile RB/CBs someone like Richards or Howedes at Schalke
