Newcastle cull begins

Will we find another superhero?
Will we find another superhero?
Lee Charnley and co. have announced the release of 6 Newcastle United players including our last gasp hero Jona Gutierrez, but how will the squad be affected?

The players to go are Remi Streete, Facundo Ferreyra, Adam Campbell, Jack Alnwick, Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez himself. Meanwhile, Sammy Ameobi has been offered a new deal.

A few years ago Streets and Campbell in particular were slated as future Toon stars, but their development has ground to a halt when they should by now be making an impact on the 1st team squad. With a club so focused on the ‘buy ’em young, develops them and flog ’em’ model – the question has to be asked what’s gone on here then? It’s easy to point the finger at Pardew and Beardsley, but on the flipside the likes of Paul Dummett, Sammy Ameobi, Masadio Haidara, Rolando Aarons and even Mahdi Abeid to an extent have made the breakthrough to contributors to our first team. So then you have to ask is it just a lack of talent, motivation, luck or all of the above that played their part in the demise of these two? Streete has spent a lot of time out injured during his loan at Rangers whilst Campbell has had several loan moves down the years and never seemed to have really pushed on. It could be argued these two were never really 1st team squad players and as such it is neither here, nor there that they have been released. It is noted though that West Brom have offered Campbell a deal, which would see him remain in the Premier League – so what has Tony Pulls seen that our coaches have not?

Facundo Ferreyra was a punt on a possible regular goal scorer. He had a decent record in Argentina and despite not starting many games for Shakthar Donetsk, he still managed 6 goals from 5 starts in his debut season in Ukraine. Then the Russian conflict happened and he refused to return to his club to train due to the safety concerns he and colleagues rightly had. It seems Newcastle decided to take advantage of this and give the guy a go at the PL, ppicking him up for a relatively modest 6 million quid if his loan were to be a success. Our coaches must have had this guy chalked down as a 1st teamer, but for whatever reason it never came off and he spend all season injured or playing for the reserves. End result? We have a space in the squad for a striker and the lad won’t be missed, as we never got a look at him. Hopefully they will chose a bit more carefully when looking at our next striker, as we could really have done with an extra effective front man this season just gone.

In terms of Jack Alnwick, he stepped into the breach this season for his big breakthrough following injuries to 1st choice keepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliott, however in his 6 games in the Premier League this season he conceaded 14 goals. Unfortunately for him, he had possibly the worst defense in the League in front of him, but still the numbers did not look pretty for a lad who brazenly claimed to be the next Joe Hart! With Karl Darlow coming in this summer, we can consider Jack’s position replaced and even upgraded, so all good on that front, no?

Next up is Ryan Taylor. He has possessed stunning free kick ability and treated us fans to some memorable strikes, particularly against the Mackems in 2011. That said, he has suffered some nasty injuries over the last couple of years and during the limited appearances he has made this season he has looked a shadow of his former self. He has even pulled out of tackles, leading to at least one goal conceded by us – which had been unheard of for Taylor. As a result letting him go is the right thing to do and it frees up a space and wages at right back for a new signing. I hope his injuries are behind him and he can see out his last couple of years as a pro footballer at a decent level.

Finally, Jonas Gutierrez. What an up and down time he has had over the years. He was with us during our relegation several moons ago and he knows the pain of relegation. What stood out about him against Man Utd just after he joined was his abundance of energy. He was immense that day. He was always reliable if not spectacular after that, but as he got older many of us commented that his legs had gone and not too many were disappointed when he was shipped off to Norwich on loan. Little did we know his legs were not the problem, but he was seriously ill with testicular cancer. He has made it clear that the club did not support him through this difficult time and he clearly resents our club owner for how he was treated. However, he never stopped believing and was given plenty of support by the Toon Army. The end result is a film script. He fights the illness and beats it, returns to us, gets himself fitter than most of our squad, pulls the black and white shirt back on despite how he had allegedly been treated by the board and saved us from the doomed drop. What an absolute legend. I believe he was worth a year’s contract based on that performance alone, but can understand why the hierarchy may want to move his wages on and bring in the next generation of talent.

All in all, this cull does not seem like a bad thing – so long as suitable, quality replacements come in for Jonas and Ryan – whose character and work ethic will be a big miss in the dressing room.

  1. Huddlestone-Colback could/would/should be a good partnership in midfield. With Abeid as 3rd option.

  2. As I have said before, Huddlestone doesn’t score and flatters to deceive. He has a thunderbolt shot but they never go in. We should have midfielders who can chip in with a few goals like Colback does.

      (Quote)

  3. Distin 38 years old and a Championship player at that. Fer and Huddlestone poor/average players, and both recently relegated.
    Come on people 🙄

  4. Mds- Logic is to be more patient with players you developped than those who come as marquee signings for big money and to have instant impact to improve team, as its not the case with Cabella, he might be better, but if someone guve us half price Id get rid

      (Quote)

  5. MM: I agree with you. Why should we even be looking at the likes of Huddlestone? And Carver should not even be a consideration as manager. We should not always be shopping at Sports Direct – get a couple of things for the in-laws you don’t like, but not for everything.

  6. What we need is not a DM who can score, we need a DM who can hold up play, be smart and make some stops like Tioté, goals is important but this is not priority, midfielders who have to score more are Sissoko and Abeid if he plays in higher position. Dont forget £10m Cabella did not score/assist more than the criticised Sammy Ameobi and Riviere scored only one goal and de Jong was injured. Those 3 should of brought goals

      (Quote)

  7. Cholo: Cabella seems to me to have a lot of skill. Limit the stepovers and give him someone to play off of and we have a very good player.

      (Quote)

  8. Saying Distin is a Championship players is disrespectful. This guy is one of France most underrated players ever, better than some actual French defenders like Sakho or Mangala. And he has disrespect by Roberto Martinez, but justice is that Everton was really poor defensively this season, far more than lrevious seasons when Distin was in the team. Distin still got it and woul be an improvement on what we have.

      (Quote)

  9. Also, Perez and Cabella are the same type of player. We can’t play them in the same team. We were desperate this year, but Perez was supposed to be bought for the future. It is because we had imbeciles as managers that they couldn’t see this.

      (Quote)

  10. If we can get a manager or head coach in that focuses more on offence than containment, then we might actually see a different side to a lot of our attack minded players.

      (Quote)

  11. Eric Sykes- Having skills doesnt make you a plqyer, how you use it defines you, for a French Internationas who went to World Cup, he looks like an overrated Ronaldo carricature. But at least Ronaldo could impact a game many ways. I trust more Ayoze Aarons Sammy and Armstrong than Cabella who is by far the oldest and most experienced. And you wont convince me that he is more.talented than Vuckic who never plays for us. Half decent ofder and I get rid with no regrets, even if he makes it else where, football is also about heart and determination.

      (Quote)

  12. Ayoze and Cabella are a bit similar, but Ayoze plays with more heart, more drive, is not scared of the challenge, and can impact a game. Cabella only shows flashes skill without impact our results. So Id establish Ayoze for the next seasons and get rid of Cabella.

Why do you want a player like Sammy as back up when he’s clearly not good enough for the first team. It’s not like buying a player in the hope he will be good enough to break into the first team in the future.

Sammys got the heart the suze of a pea. That will never change. The reason for squad players is surely that they will develop and be first teamers in a good team.

I simply don’t see Sammy improving. He hasn’t got the desire or heart.

  14. It is not like we are Barcelona. Our players have to be fitted into a system and adapted to the PL. If we had supreme and sublime talent like Messi, Suarez and Neymar it would be different.

      (Quote)

  15. Shirley, Aarons should have been available for NUFC during our hour of need? (I know it is surely).

      (Quote)

  16. Sammy looked quite good in a few games, under the right coaching he could be OK. He’s better than some of the wingers we’ve got, overran, goof

  17. Distin is 37, has never won an international cap in a poor French International line up, but is one of France most underrated players ever, better than some actual French defenders like Sakho or Mangala.

I think I’d pass on that one 🙂

Why don’t we pay 10 million for Sebastian Bassong….he also looks like a good one, and is a merer whipper snapper compared to Distin 😀

      (Quote)

  18. We need to get a manager before we sign any players. Its been 5 months since pardew left.

85 choice’s, none over the line.
Until I believe ashley, we need a manager asap so we can discuss players with Carr and charnley. We ain’t got time to waste another start of a season.

      (Quote)

  19. What about Robert Huth as a back up CB?. I’m sure he’s on a free & he was a big part of Leicesters excellent form at the end of the season. Solid defender and good leader at the back I reckon.

  20. @stu exactly
Pisses me right off watching this thinking we’ve thrown the last 7 fa cups under fatty. Disgusting behaviour

  21. Unfortunately mike doesn’t think of the fans memories. Ask any villa fans if they think this day is a hindrance to their club 😳

  22. @Big Dave

It’s true! I’m astounded at the Distin suggestion. Why would we ever want him?

Gashley, you’re reet about the manager being appointed before any links to players.

  23. Looking forward to seeing who the Sunday papers have us buying and hiring as coach tomorrow.

  24. The longer it takes the more I’m convinced there’s only one choice for pen pusher charnley …. SM. If so, just get on with it ffs

  25. So Villa finish 17 and below us and get thumped and outplayed in the cup. There is a god and Karmas a ***** 😈

  26. If it wasn’t for the new manager bounce they’d of gone down, they been flirting with it for a few seasons now.

  27. would sell darlo and Lascelles meself forest let in 71 goals in a lower league dont bode well for me as for distin no way some peeps here are off there nuts if you ask me,mr always on hoilday saylor got to go also along with collo if we can find some mug that would take him and williamson has to go

      (Quote)

  28. Gashley – it’s mental isn’t it?!. They are a fantastic footballing side, and Sanchez is just a true joy to watch

      (Quote)

  29. Troy @90, why does any team have squad players if that’s the case? It’s not possible to have 25 1st teamera. I think Sammie can do a job for the odd half hour, but not the full 90 game in, game out. We also need home grown players in the squad. I see what you mean, but I disagree. The key is to ensure we actually have enough ‘purples’, so that we don’t have to rely too much on squad fillers.

      (Quote)

  30. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< carry on with the cull is what this dude thinks

      (Quote)

  31. Shamrock: what exactly is a “PURPLE” and where is its meaning derived from?

      (Quote)

  32. Scanning through the various blogs and social media, the apathy from the toon fans aimed at the owner, his minnion Charnley, and the general state of affairs at NUFC hasn’t really improved from the last 6 months of utter rubbish.

Just watch Charnley fail famously to build on ANY positivity at the club (Jonas’s goal and effort against West Ham….others ???) by making an utter and complete mess of the choice of new trainer, entry into the transfer market, and general organisation at the club. The release of Jonas and Raylor was to be expected, but how is the new trainer expected to get his squad together in 6 weeks. A squad woefully low on quality, and having lost 2 seanior pros who played a massive part in the last weeks of the relegation fight ? FFs Charnley has had 80 applications and 5 months to find a new coach, he doesn’t believe in acting rashly does he ? 👿 👿
Be prepared for a magnificent and a new brush sweeping clean and a pre-season tour consisting of Hartlepool away, Heerenveen away, and Malaga at home… Meanwhile massive clubs like West Ham, Stoke, West Brom and Swansea will leave us floundering as they pick up the cream of european talent to strengthen their EPL futures…

Not trying to be a negger like, but I haven’t seen or heard anything to convince me otherwise… Mickey mouse club…

      (Quote)

  33. Shamrock: I think a “PURPLE” is a high value poker chip, like $5K and Fatman and Llambias were talking in that way about players when they were all ballsey about NUFC. I am not sure though.

      (Quote)

  34. MM: I know a prurple is a poker chip, it is just funny to hear it referred to again.

      (Quote)

  35. Munich – it’s a good job you’re not trying to be a neggar then mate. Imagine the lows you could achieve with some effort 😯 😆

      (Quote)

  36. Shamrock @ 121 you say Sammi would be able to play 30 mins but not the full 90mins which I agree with you. But whats happens if due to injuries we then need him for the full 90 mins ? After all he is supposed to be a pro footballer and a match last for 90 mins , we would then be fuked cause we wouldnt be able to rely on him to cover for injuries.
I can understand in a way if he was a very special player coming to the last season of his career where we could use him to come on and grab us a goal, but he is a youngun at the start of his career.

      (Quote)

  37. BIG DAVE
i think they gave sammy a new contract cause hes got quick feet, but for me he should be takeing games by the scruff of the neck more for me

      (Quote)

  38. if sammy dont come to the party next season i will be demanding we sell him

      (Quote)

  39. Dave – I think they need to work on Sammys game to be honest. He puts a lot of graft in and recently has been subbed after 60-75mins coz he’s been knackered. A lot of his work has been tracking back and I bet he covers move ground than the likes of Cabella for example. If they had him focus on his offensive game and solidified our defence a bit so he wasn’t running back as much, then maybe he’d be good for 90mins

      (Quote)

  40. IMO he is a headless chicken and If anyone wants to copy this and paste it after next season, I dont think I will have changed my opinion on him.
If Sammi is the type of player we will need to rely on then I really do worry, he is another Strolla only faster.

      (Quote)

  41. Stu it really wouldn’t surprise me if SM gets the job even after turning it down twice before , it will just show how much ambition we really have

      (Quote)

  42. Frankly, Mr. Ashley, this position I’ve held
It pays my way, and it corrodes my soul
I want to leave, you will not miss me

      (Quote)

  43. BIG DAVE
you had a good look at that bolasie, ive watched him alot this season pacy, powerfull, and can also chip in with a few goals as well as put the ball right on the money, ive seen him do a few things this season that defied phisics and had to rewind a few times to make sure i had seen what i thought id seen 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  44. Hmm, not a lot of support for SM from our fans judging by the pole the other day. Don’t think he even got 20 votes. I suppose he’s steady, but it says to me will be aiming for mid table mediocrity again…

      (Quote)

  45. Dave – he is a bit headless chicken, and he does chance a lot of lost causes. But that’s what I mean by working on his game.

Stu – frankly it would surprise me if its not McClaren.

      (Quote)

  46. TAE TBH I havent seen owt of him.
Shamrock for me that is the main problem , we should be aiming for more than mid table. And going by what Jabba said it would mean better than the Wolly with the brolly

      (Quote)

  47. Sharpy the problem for me is that at 23 he should know what he is doing . I would look over it if he was a young Aarons or Campbell but he’s not.
