Inspirational punts verses steady hands.

Patrick_Vieira (1)Interesting events seem to be popping up around the new head coach position at Newcastle United. It would seem we are due to hold talks with a certain Patrick Vieira for his possible services!, yes you read right, I did say Patrick Vieira. Quite how he has come into the frame is anyones guess. They may well of been monitoring his progress at City with the reserves or just realised he could be an option what with his contract up in the summer. How ever you slice it, if true, it’s a bold move by the Newcastle board, but is it smart or foolhardy?

So let’s weigh up the pro’s and con’s of unknown quantities verses steady hands. When you employ a Maclaren, Pulis, Moyes or Allardyce you know exactly what you are getting; namely a guy to steady the ship with a possible decent cup run . That’s all fine and good but what if you want more than that? I mean can these guys gain regular top 6 or 5th finishes or better? well, probably not in truth, if they could do better they’d already be at the likes of Chelsea. In the case of Moyes, he had a shot at Man utd after steady work at Everton yet failed once in charge with apparently more talent and cash at his disposal . So is there a case for saying that younger untested managers in waiting or at lower division clubs are worth a punt. Apparently yes there is and the evidence is right in front of us.

Take a look at the final 6 placed teams in the championship this season and the top 5 are all young managers with the first 3 gaining their clubs promotion to the promise land of the Premier League. Bournemouths Eddie Howe at 37 years old and who’s only real top flight football as a player was two appearences for Portsmouth under Redknapp, has done an amazing job there. Then we have Watfords Slavisa Jokanovic at 46 years old and who played for Partizan Belgrade and Chelsea in the top flight and managed Partizan and Levski Sofia amongst others. Then of course there is Alex Neil of Norwich who is just 32 years old and come seemingly from no where. Actually he came down from Hamilton academical after great success getting them promoted to the Scottish Premier League last season. The day he left his players were in tears such was his standing as not just a coach but former player for them. The

Accies loss is Norwiches gain as he’s guided them via the playoffs to the Premier League.

Talking of playoffs, let’s look at Boro’s manager Aitor Karanka, ok his team fell at the final hurdle but what a marvalous job he’s done at the Boro. At 41 years old another up and coming manager who played most of his career at Bilbao and Real madrid. He did manage the Spanish u16 side and learn his trade next to Jose Mourinho at R. Madrid though to be fair. All the same these clubs have taken a punt or a brave decision on their new head coaches when the easy option would of been a steady Eddie.

So the question is do Newcastle go with a tried and trusted pair of hands or opt to go down the untried route like the afore mentioned clubs?

Derby have just sacked Steve Maclaren who has been heavily linked to the Newcastle post for months now in favour of an untried manager in Paul Clement, yet to be confirmed. Clement has a lot of experience, coaching at Chelsea Academy, Fulham Academy and was ROI U21 coach, Blackburn Rovers assistant coach ,PSG assistant coach and Real Madrid assistant coach alongside Ancelotti. Yet the guy never played beyond non league as a player! Should we infact be looking to employ someone like Clement rather than Steve Maclaren?

With Villa taking a chance on Tim Sherwood with some early success and Everton doing steady under Roberto Martinez, Swansea doing ok under Garry Monk and relegated QPR seemingly happy to show faith in Chris Ramsey to guide them back to the PL , shouldn’t we be giving a young progressive coach a chance?

I can understand a lot of fans wanting an established name, a safe pair of hands if you like but sometimes the unknown quantity can spring a pleasent surprise. Remember Kevin Keegan had no experience in management and look what happened there.

  1. I don’t think the situation is clear yet. Apparently Garde’s still in the mix. The rumour is that Wenger wants Garde or Viera to replace him eventually but they have to prove themselves in the PL first and are both looking at NUFC.
.com claim the Viera interview is the afternoon.

  4. Why are the fan’s so worried about next season for ?

Lee’s not worried. His got Carver on standby, encase every other manager turn’s us down.

  5. the nufc.com boys reckon its SM and will be announced over the next couple of days. Their always pretty accurate in what they report so looks like graham carr has got his man despite others within the club wanting to look at vieira

  6. I knew it would be McClaren all along. I heard it from a bloke on a blog who knows a bloke who knows somebody’s mate.

  7. @SkySports_Keith: Newcastle update: we understand that Patrick Vieira is no longer a serious candidate to take over as Head Coach. More on @SkySportsNewsHQ

  8. I suppose McClaren is an upgrade on Pardew. Pardew was sacked from Division 1, McClaren was sacked from the Championship.

  9. As Lee Ryder has put on Twitter. We have had an open door on people like Tuchel, De Boer and Vieira yet we didn’t even speak to them.

Nothing will change. One thing is right though. When Ashley said from this day forward we create our own luck. We most certainly will do and we will deserve it too.

  10. Step forward Steve McClaren to pie us off a third time – how fucking stupid would we look then?!

      (Quote)

  11. He doesn’t seem overly keen, Sharpy. He’s on holiday and has no plans to come back early! Do they think we’re stupid? How much of a farce was the Vieira thing? anither ‘PR’ stunt.

  12. Stu – we’ve had 2 disastrous seasons IMO – both on and off the field, so I think the list of candidates would be limited in reality. I don’t think the likes of Benitez and Klopp were ever realistic possibilities – but people like Laudrup and Bielsa are realistic targets. The problem we have is that Carr is the only football bloke on the board – the rest make there argument based of finance and panini stickers they had as kids!!.

      (Quote)

  13. Also the more credible candidates would want control of the players who are signed and that was something NUFC weren’t prepared to allow. I’m still not sure how that works to be honest.

  14. Totally deflated by the news, although in December when Pardew quit McLaren was one of the first names I thought of. Boring, ordinary old football and zero charisma in attracting good players. Same old same old.

      (Quote)

  15. Yeah it wouldn’t be a terrible appointment, just very uninspiring and bland. Ashley said in his interview that we make our own luck from here – well good luck selling those season tickets with McClaren at the helm fat lad 😉

      (Quote)

  16. Vieira will do very well to get full control of transfers at any club in this day and age.

Schteve it is then although I nearly had a heart attack looking at news now. Itv want to try matching their headlines & content…

      (Quote)

  17. There are very few managers anymore that have full say on transfers. And most managers on the continent are probably used to having very little or no say.

It’s strange they seemingly latched on to McClaren so early seemingly at the expense of looking to the continent. Is it because they want a perm experienced Englishman, despite Charnley’s statements to the contrary? Or is Carr buddies with MCClaren and pushing hard for a guy he knows he can work with?

Can’t say I’m massive fan of the English good old boys club we’d be left with (Charnley, Carr, McClaren, Carver and the other assistants), especially when we do so much buying in Europe. How about some fresh ideas for a change?

      (Quote)

  18. MDS according to .com it was exactly that, Carr has pushed for McClaren

There was support for Vieira & Laudrup within the club apparantly but Carrs won

      (Quote)

  19. The hope I’m clinging to is that MCClaren turns us down. Test I know it’s like a 1% chance as the mak is unlikey to have any better option but the reality is its a terrible job for him to take. He will be despised by the supporters from day one and, by extention, the press. He would pretty much have to get us into Europe to win people over. I’m sure he’ll be over-promised by Charnley and Carr is teens of transfer spend which will probably be enough for him to take it. But hopefully the bad press this is getting will scare him off

He’d be far better off staying in the Championship trying to get a club promoted or going somewhere with a less toxic situation.

      (Quote)

  20. Another season of Williamson in defence. Obertan and Gouffran on the wings and Riviere to get the goals. Beautiful

      (Quote)

  21. Absolutely, MDS. He is going to start with the fans already behind him which is just a ridiculous situation to be in. If it doesn’t start well for him the club will implode once again.

I just keep asking myself, what is Ashley doing while this shambles is going on? Also what has Charnley done to deserve this unwavering support trust from Ashley.

      (Quote)

  22. People hammer Ashley for every decision made at the club but the reality appears to be that Charnley, and Lambeezy before him, seems to run the entire show. Ashley should be rightly criticized for hiring incompetant people.

Charnley has not made a single decision that shows him to be competent to run a premier league club. In fact, he has made numerous decisions that clearly demonstrate the opposite.

      (Quote)

  23. TAE – I think there will be boycotts without knowing they’re boycotts. It will just be a natural decline due to apathy and anger at more lack of ambition. It’s ok saying this, that and the other but actions speak louder than words and there is no way on earth that appointing McClaren can be seen as ambitious when you consider who is also available.

      (Quote)

  24. Charnley and Lambeze have both made shocking decisions yes, but based on cuttjng corners and conning the fans. It’s all driven by fat Ash and he is to blame. Sacking Charley would change nothing. I still reckon the fans will be fooled this summer when he spends a few quid on the squad (because he has to). They will think we have turned the corner and then next season it will be business as usual for him. We really are suckers.

      (Quote)

  25. If Stu and I are in agreement we can’t possibly be wrong.

And to be clear McClaren does have some positives about him and I much prefer him to Pardew so in that sense we will have come out ahead from the beginning of last year IMO. But his appointment would be a big missed opportunity on several levels.

  26. fatboy had his chance to build some bridges with the fanbase and sounds like hes proper blew it

  27. Even as unpopular as this will be, it’s probably the most logical appointment Ashley has made 😯

      (Quote)

  28. they would not give him control of ins and outs cause fatboy playing footie manager with our club and has been for a long time now,i guess Vieira would not agree to leting fatboy pick the team for games and thats been going on for i long time in my opion

      (Quote)

  29. TAE at least he’s managed and won things abroad. He’s also considered one of the best on the training pitch. But, yeah, underwhelming

      (Quote)

  30. Yes, he is supposed to be good on the training ground and players speak very highly of him, but it does make you wonder why he’s completely flopped at his last few jobs.

  33. Hitman his not going to sell up until his won something. All he has to do now is field a weaker team in the cups and we’ll never be rid of him.

As for McClaren I’ll give him a chance but I’m not over the moon about it.

      (Quote)

  34. Ooh something major must have happened bearing in mind how steadfast he was a couple of days ago about staying on. He must know he’s been found out. Can’t wait for his arrest haha 😛

      (Quote)

  35. Jill @ 349 know how you feel mate, I would love to divorce myself from the club. Lets hope the club dont blow their chance to show some ambition by signing McClaren.
I would say they should have their man in by the end of the week.

  36. If SM signs, that’s it for me watching games next season.

Champions league my **** .. What other premier team would hire SM??

    Don’t buy your season tickets

      (Quote)

  37. If they hire McClaren he has to be on a short leash like at Forest. Same for Hoddle. But, surely somebody has to get sacked for the disaster that is this year. I suppose Carr is thinking that we were OK with Pardew before Carver was appointed. Well, we weren’t, the football has been **** for at least 2 years and the coaches should take some of the blame.

      (Quote)

  38. So SM is the pit-pony to bolt to the cart, 😆 mikes stable vision will turn into a night…mare 😯 so much for new pastures 😛 🙄

Stu if it was Hoodle or McClaren I would have to go with Hoodle, but cant see Hoodle working under the constraints.

  42. Wow, a sacked Championship manager or a guy that last managed 9 years ago – in the Championship. This is what the board of a PL club thinks will secure Top 4 football?

By the way, Hoddle left Wolves because they would not loosen the purse strings.

If we need a Gk, we have to go for Mandanda. Get rid of Gouffran Willo Obertan Riviere and sell Cabella if good offer, same for Sissoko.

  45. Aren’t they taking a massive risk here? It seems like a power play by Carr, but why wouldn’t he want input from the head coach. I hope Carr has some great players up his sleeve because we are going to need them.

Keeping the coaches is the most amazing thing to me. They failed and should all be sacked. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Carver still thinks he’s the man for the job and will undermine the authority of anyone coming in.

      (Quote)

  46. McLaren will be a good fit long term…. the club will look to have a manager that will last at least 5 years I reckon… so they will want someone that will hang around for that time… The last thing we need is for a slew of managers that want to pull up stumps after 2 or 3 years.. As much as SM underwhelms me, I think he is the obvious choice if history is anything to go by…

      (Quote)

  47. Who actually played well for us last season? Colback, Janmaat, Haidara, maybe Cisse, Perez, Dummett and Sissoko for the odd game. Hopefully de Jong, Taylor and Aarons can get fit so we at least have a squad. And with a year under their belts maybe Cabella and Riviere can come good – that’s asking a lot for attackers with either 1 or 2 goals between them.

And yet we are not being linked with anybody. Maybe that means the new manager will actually have a bit of input?

      (Quote)

  48. Aussie – I agree with that mate. It seems this lots ultimate ambition is stability. They have achieved it financially and they will now look to make us stable in the league. There will be little change in the approach of things other than with the 3rd round of the FA Cup being mid season – if we have the points on the board, we may field a stronger side – if the points aren’t there we won’t.
McClaren is a good coach, and hopefully will get to bring his own team in. There are plenty of areas where he can improve and even if he just starts with defence & set plays we’ll see an instance improvement I’d have thought.
WHU got fat Sam in to stabilise the club so they can now kick on. My worry is that we would stick with McClaren coz he’s safe.

      (Quote)

  49. Don’t understand why they don’t just say it’s SM, it’s now the worse kept secret in the country, unless they are still considering JC 🙄

      (Quote)

  50. Then again there are season tickets still to flog so they will be milking the speculation. They must think we’re all idiots taken in by that PR stunt of an interview.
