Taking the Positives – New Players

Domenico-berardi-sassuolo-juventus-2013-14-04Well it’s that time of year again. New Manager, New Coaches and hopefully new Players. We have been promised some big spending but I suspect that 2 £15 players will be the limit with a few cheaper options. The question is who? But in order to determine that we need to determine how we are going to play. 1 striker or 2? Wing Backs? Three at the back? Well we need an all new back four just about so I’ll go 4-4-1-1.

So starting at the front we need a CF to lead the Line, and Charlie Austin at £15m has been linked, So has Andy Carroll at considerably less. I don’t see Bamford or Berhino as leading the line. Bas Dost is 6′ 5” which is good, and at £7m a cheaper option. We already have Cisse, but I want three options. So I would look at Robert Beric from Rapid Vienna only 23 Slovenian and with 27 goals from 33 starts last season, a snip at £2m.

Behind our CF we need a creative second striker. We have DeJong, Vuckic & Perez. In this SS / Attacking Midfield role. That’s 2 sicknotes and a kid. So I would cast a look at Nikolaos Karelis who is 23 and plays as a second striker for Panathinaikos. He would cost about £2.5m and he scored 13 goals last season. Juanmi from Malaga is only 22 would cost £6m but only scored 8.

Also in attacking roles I want wingers. We have Cabella and Marveaux. Maybe McLaren can get a tune out of those two, and we have young Aarons coming through. But this is where we need to spend. On the LW I’d buy Shkelzen Gashi from FC Basel at 26 and £5m he is not cheap, but 26 goals from 39 last season is not to be sniffed at. On the RW I want Domenico Berardi. Now this is my big buy. He’s only 20, left footed right winger, playing for Sassuolo (on loan from Juve) in Italy Serie A he knocked in 15 gaols and 13 assists. A snip at £15m. I’ll take that.

CM we have Tiote & Sissoko who if on their day are actually an excellent pairing. However, we may lose one or both of them which leaves Colback and Abeid which whilst OK does need some support. I’m not convinced that Anita & Bigi provide that. Possibly Leroy Fer & Will Hughes who McLaren will know, but at about £8m each do we need to spend? For me only if we sell in this area first.

Full backs we have Dummett & Haidara on the left and Janmaat on the right. Now I know Micah Richards has been mentioned, but Kieron Tripper at Burnley and Andy Robertson from Hull both had decent seasons and £8m for the pair might be better value than Richards wages.

Which of course leaves CB I think that given that the only one who may make the grade is Lescalles, and he is not the finished article, then we can look at Steven Caulker at QPR and James Chester at Hull. But I like the look of Stefan Mitovic at Frieburg. At £3m he is about the same prices as James Chester whilst Steven Caulker is being talked of at £15m.

So, there are 3 £15m players there, Austin, Calker & Berardi. I’ll happily settle for 2 of those. Then there are another 6 players for a total of £20m Beric, Karelis, Gashi, Tripper, Robertson & Mitrovic. Then if we need some others due to players moving on then there are a few options in there. Now I’m not suggesting for 1 minute that I’m a better scout than Carr, or that the stats that I have accessed for these players means that they are the right players for us, but is shows what is out there. We could have a complete new team. But then Spurs tried that when they sold Bale. And this is Newcastle. Will Ashley put his money where his mouth is?

  15. To be honest Neither are, when we’re signing one of the red hot strikers of European football for £9m It shown how ridiculous the prices are for English players.

    Out of the English strikers we’ve been linked with I liked the idea of Bamford on loan with an option to buy, that way we could see if he could step up. Hes certainly got more to his game than Austin and Deeney and a lot younger.

  16. Kim – that maybe so, but we don’t have to believe it. The lad reminds me a bit of Leon Best, and I certainly don’t think he was a £10m CF. Difficult one I suppose coz Watford will look at Ulloa going for around that price last season and Shane Long. Is he that much different to Rivière?!, I’d sooner try and get him scoring personally.

  18. CC& Sharpy, aye we have a major problem this window imo. We do need a bit more British grit but as you say it’s costly to buy home grown and in the case of Austin and Deeney it’s still a gamble. I do think Austin will continue to play well but not sure he’ll massively increase in value tbh. Time will tell what our ambitions really are I suppose.

  22. Kim – the trouble with the toon is that we can pull off 5 signings in a week, or we can go a whole window signing no sod. I remain hopeful as they have all publicly acknowledged the squad needs strengthening. So my hope is that they are busy beavering away on deals & are just too busy to speak to the press. But I have to be honest, the first signing will be met more with relief than excitement I reckon

  29. They wanted an early signing through the door and that hasn’t happened. They wanted the coaching staff in place by Monday and that hasn’t happened. McClaren wants his signings made by the time the players are back for pre season training and unless we go on a signing feast that’s not going to happen either.

  38. Kim – have you had a look at his goals on Utube – not that I’m using it as a scouting tool. But a lot of his goals are scored as a result of a long ball over the top. He’s a decent finisher but if we get him, we might want to think about keeping Willo – he could get a **** load of assists next season just by clearing the ball 😆

I can see us buying cheap second rate players from the championship and fighting for PL survival. The man has spent 1 million in 8 years and pushing above our weight is probably 10 million. Spending money is something Ashley hates doing. Sissoko, Santon, Pardew and MYM will be the money spent.

  52. If NUFC are planning to sell Cisse they better have a plan B. I think he scored 11 goals last season even with his bad knee and suspensions. Next best was 4. We aren’t going to get very far if we only score 30 goals a season.

    I am trying to remain optimistic but fear the football world have us sussed now. Fatty is always looking for a bargain but at this point there aren’t any bargains. All the money sloshing around has made it a sellers market and the sooner we realise this the better. We will have to overpay, that is the reality of the situation.

    Fatman made his money selling cheap tat to the masses but football is not like that now. You have upstarts like Palace and Swans competing and outbidding us while Charnley takes 6 months to appoint a manager.

    I really hope they have some irons in the fire and that every transfer target that goes to another club is not the sum total of their endeavor. Let’s get a move on boys.

  57. No the transfer window isn’t open, but deals are being done regardless.
    We are quick to off load players when it suits tho.
    As for the transfer budget, who knows.
    I don’t care. It’s quite simple tho if they want fans inside then they have got to bring in some quality players.
    More of the same, will result in more turmoil on Tyneside. Protests boycotts and probably riots.

  58. AMF, Troysta and BrisV should all just get together and have a “settling” party. Carvs and Pards are good enough and what we deserve!!!! We should just accept that we were on a level with Chelsea 10 years ago and now they are light years ahead. Abramovich is a crook but he has promoted their brand to the extent that they are one of the top 5 teams in the world. The only brand we promote is Sports Direct. And we are expected to accept that?

  62. Stuart… That’ll be the same press who quoted the figures of £40m, £50m, £60m etc not one of them knows what it is.

    Window opens 1st of July not…however I’m guessing you can get all the medicals done and contracts signed before that, the only thing you can’t do is register it with the Premier League/FA. The better players or more accurately, more sought after players (Austin for example) will nearly always wait and see which teams will come in for them and who offers the most cash which is why deals for those sort of players often take longer. There’s often nowt a mediocre, mid table team like NUFC can do but play the waiting game for such players and hope that their offer is the best on the table at the end of it (chuckles to himself)

    Regarding the coaches, I was told that all SMs staff at Derby were coming as well. Eric Steele was the one who said as much (according to my sauce). Remember I called the SM appointment waaaaay before the press! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
    So maybe existing contracts are being dealt with?
    Derby may not want to let them go so who knows what the wash up will be?
