Game On! Sunderland v Newcastle

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
You spell it ‘Howay’…
So it’s finally upon us. This game, this contest, this scrap between two factions divided by club colour and heritage. Families split, workplaces divided, this is one fixture that encapsulates a region like no other.

No doubt the nerves are jangling, tensions are rising, passion overflowing. We all have our little routine when it comes to Wear-Tyne derby day and that only ends when the first ball is kicked.

Unfortunately it is hard to get away from the fact that all too often in recent times the bragging rights have been firmly housed on Wearside. But we have to hope that we can stop the rot at the Stadium of Light and take at least a share of the spoils. I mean anything can happen on derby day, right?

The history of the fixture would suggest so as it points out that both sides are pretty much level in terms of wins against the other. You can read that history, injury news, player availability, stats, facts and more in our match preview which you can get to by clicking here.

The game itself is live on Sky Sports so if you’re not one of the lucky 2,800 Newcastle fans present at the Stadium of Light there are other means of watching the game unfold. I’d suggest looking in the ‘comments’ section as you can normally pick up a stream or two courtesy of our very thoughtful regulars.

The same can be said for team, I will publish it as soon as I can but most likely it will be available in the ‘comments’ before I get a chance to get it live on here.

There isn’t much more to say. Are you ready?

Howay the lads!

  1. A shoulder barge is legal only if the defender is playing for the ball. Colo was beat to the ball and changed direction to take the striker clean out. No doubt it’s a penalty and a goal scoring opportunity. It’s a pen and red card and Colo is a mug.

  2. However well we have played let’s not forget how bad Sunderland have been and are. They’re shocking and we couldn’t score. McClaren under real pressure now and rightly so.

  3. Sham – if that happens in the corner and he shielding the ball out of play it’s a goal kick. You can’t deny that happens every single game.

  4. Axel – they’ll grow in confidence and Johnson in particular is always up for this match. We haven’t made it count when we absolutely dominated so don’t see much hope now. At least it’s colo that got sent off and not Mbemba.

  5. Just typical isn’t it. Here we go another 6 points they didn’t deserve and they will probably stay up on g.d. Just makes you sick doesn’t it.

  6. 2 players running in the direction for the ball have got to come together, neither had the ball so where the goal scoring opportunity

  7. I agree Gini should have had a penalty. Not convinced it was a hand ball but definite block with other arm. Stu, when a player is shielding the ball they are still playing the ball. Colo was not shielding the ball or playing the ball. He intentionally took the striker out to stop him scoring. No doubt it’s a penalty but the consistency from the ref let us down. Gini should have had a penalty and if he did, Scum would not have had the break. Bad play by ref and bad play again by Colo. I have had enough of Tiote too. Booked fast again.

  8. Probably the right shout. Go long, hope mitro bosses them and gets a knock down for Perez. At least we didn’t take off one of our strikers.

  9. It appears Sunderland are perfectly within their rights to go in with excess force and there is no problem

      (Quote)

  10. Dare I say it but I think Thauvin might have an impact here. There was plenty of space on the flanks and he could take advantage. The only problem is if we need to replace Colback then we only have one sub left to use between De Jong, Cisse and Thauvin.

    Going completely Lear shaped

  11. I still think we can do ’em. Tiote May as well not be there anyway so it’s carry on like normal.

      (Quote)

  12. Again nothing for Carrermole… Should’ve been 2 yellows… And this a red… How much did the scum pay this ref…

      (Quote)

  13. If we don’t get anything from this game then McClaren can **** off out of the club. Sunderland are absolutely shocking and we couldn’t even beat them with 11 men, it’s another Derby defeat and we have won 1 in 10. Not good enough.

      (Quote)

  14. **** off Johnson you kiddy fiddler. **** off Coloccini back to Argentina. He wasn’t even gonna get the ball, Elliott was.

      (Quote)

  15. Johnson cost them 10 mil, but he’s saved them from relegation for three seasons in a row now, by winning these matches for the *******.

Is there a player with a worse shot than Anita in the PL?

      (Quote)

  16. I believe we are starting to take shape under McC but we made a big mistake not addressing defense in the summer. I think we will survive with McC at the helm but only if we spend some serious dough in January. Colo, willo, Tiote and probably Anita all need upgrades and we also need cover at RB.

      (Quote)

  17. We played well against Chelsea and got 1 point. Played well against City and got dicked, played well against these and get beat (probably). Sorry why should McClaren stay? Where’s the progress? 1 win in 10

      (Quote)

  18. Another day and Mitro has three, Cattermole got sent off…but back up Shamrock on the urgency of CB investment in January.

      (Quote)

  19. ill discipline has been our scourge so far this season and that’s the coaches job to rectify it. 1 win in 10 with us having been down to ten men for 30% of them games. No progress for me.

      (Quote)

  20. I would say Sunderland look like a Championship team but today they look like a pub team. How do we keep losing to these? Are they gonna sack Big Fat head Sam two games before the next one? 😆

      (Quote)

  21. Stu if he goes, he goes but I think we are playing better football now. 2 stupid decisions undone us today and we all know a lot of the squad is just not good enough. I don’t see Sherwood or Rogers doing a better job and more upheaval on the training pitch is not going to help ai don’t think. We need to invest properly in the squad in the right places and if we do that I believe McC can push us on . The only way I would support sacking him right now is if we secured an actual top class manager. Chances of that happening?

      (Quote)

  22. Do not think Mitrovic has done enough today up to now, he’s not strong enough for the 50 50 balls

      (Quote)

  23. GTE – Another day my ****! On another day we wouldn’t have lost 6 against City, or we would have held on against Chelsea or we wouldn’t have been down to ten men against Arsenal.

Sunderland are so poor it’s incredible, yet we are getting beat by them.

      (Quote)

  24. Sham- Well the summers penny pinching bollocks is just not helping the situation I agree but we just have no character at all. We have up this game at half time.

      (Quote)

  25. Bit harsh Stuart. Referee has handed this to them on a plate and served condiments. Can hardly blame Macca for that when we bossed the first half. Also teams like Manc C have 4-5 world class players. We have 1 plus Sissoko for about 1 in 50 games.

      (Quote)

  26. Also Sham I really don’t see any progress. Defensively were as bad as ever.

How many more games can we be unlucky?

Another 3-0 defeat. Is that OK as long as we’re playing better football?

      (Quote)

  27. True mate but we have had no character for a long time because we have been cheapskates. If it was McC that put the brakes on Colo on leaving and stopped us signing like Abdennour then yes he deserves to go. If it was the board going above his head then we know it’s the same old ***** on a different day and it makes no odds who is in charge of the team. Will we ever find out the answer to that and will McC drop Colo now as he’s a liability? Whose signing was Thauvin? It smells of the same old nonsense from the board to me. If only we could have a new owner…

      (Quote)

  28. The only consolation is that they will likely go down as they’re so poor it’s incredible. However what does that mean for us if we can’t beat them. Don’t forget we couldn’t even score against them with 11 men.

      (Quote)

  29. I don’t blame Steve for this at all, the ref was weak today and Colo was an idiot, both out of SM control. We are by far the better footballing side and the stats from this game will prove it. If Gini had gotten the pen he should of then they don’t get the break away and Colo doesn’t commit that foul. Different game, they will go back to losing next week cause they are *****.

      (Quote)

  30. Beaten by the ref again. Nothing to learn from this game except that refs are bunch of dickheads. Best team on the park by a mile.

      (Quote)

  31. Bloody hell, Macca wanted Charlie Austin and Carr signed Thauvin. Sorry but Carr and Charnley need to go. Plus Ashley.

      (Quote)

  32. Today was the day when we all thought we would win it, Sunderland are so poor, yet we loose 3 – 0, so it’s fair enough to ask questions.
The answer is the same – the whole club is a shambles from Charnley downwards. it really is time to act, we have wasted so much money Carr has to go, Today Gini is the only one that looked up for it, the rest give the appearance of just through the motions, and that includes back room staff etc

      (Quote)

  33. Where are another 34 points going to come from? Really, where?

We have conceded 22 goals in ten games and scored 12 and 6 of them were in one game!

To answer your point about Rogers and Moyes, I think they’re both better coaches than McClaren. He’s lucky to have the job and he’s showing why were his first PL job in 10 years.

Villa have acted, Sunderland acted and we done nothing.

How long can we go on keep picking up 6 points every 9 games?

      (Quote)

  34. Massive ******* dropped not letting Colo go and getting some quality defenders in, Mbemba accepted. Thauvin was a poor buy imo but Carr obviously had a hard on for the guy and was like a dog with a bone to the point of totally ignoring what 100% of the fans could all see we needed. That man has far too much power imo.

      (Quote)

  35. The ref gave us nothing . No Gini penalty, no yellow never mind red for Catermole and every 50/50 decision went to the Scum.

      (Quote)

  36. McClaren went on Radio Newcastle stating the biggest signing of the summer was Colo! Says it all.

      (Quote)

  37. Rogers is not the answer. He’s just not good enough. Poor man manager and can’t organise defense for toffee. Moyers I would be more comfortable with if we had to make a management change but it does not change the fact that we need wholesale changes in the playing squad and at board level. More power has to go to the man charged with getting results.
