Game On! Sunderland v Newcastle

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
You spell it ‘Howay’…
So it’s finally upon us. This game, this contest, this scrap between two factions divided by club colour and heritage. Families split, workplaces divided, this is one fixture that encapsulates a region like no other.

No doubt the nerves are jangling, tensions are rising, passion overflowing. We all have our little routine when it comes to Wear-Tyne derby day and that only ends when the first ball is kicked.

Unfortunately it is hard to get away from the fact that all too often in recent times the bragging rights have been firmly housed on Wearside. But we have to hope that we can stop the rot at the Stadium of Light and take at least a share of the spoils. I mean anything can happen on derby day, right?

The history of the fixture would suggest so as it points out that both sides are pretty much level in terms of wins against the other. You can read that history, injury news, player availability, stats, facts and more in our match preview which you can get to by clicking here.

The game itself is live on Sky Sports so if you’re not one of the lucky 2,800 Newcastle fans present at the Stadium of Light there are other means of watching the game unfold. I’d suggest looking in the ‘comments’ section as you can normally pick up a stream or two courtesy of our very thoughtful regulars.

The same can be said for team, I will publish it as soon as I can but most likely it will be available in the ‘comments’ before I get a chance to get it live on here.

There isn’t much more to say. Are you ready?

Howay the lads!

  1. Ash, we had more possession, more attempts on goal and more corners too. You can’t seriously say we were ****, we were playing them off the park first half and the pen changed everything. Gini should have got one first and Catts as Sham points out should of walked. Ref was the 12th man today for them, they got lucky end of.

      (Quote)

  2. Stats really are amazing aren’t they. They got no yellow cards. We get a red for a shoulder charge and Colback’s yellow was for complaining. Cattermole alone should have had 3 yellows.

      (Quote)

  3. Sham – We need organisation now. We can’t keep conceding all these goals. Moyes would do that but I fear Villa will move for him.

      (Quote)

  4. Hopefully McClaren realised that Colo is too slow. He needs to be replaced NOW not in 2 years. O’Shea is exactly the same, he had to sprint with Mitro (who is not very quick) and his legs went.

      (Quote)

  5. Colo messed up for me. looked the better team up to then.

Thauvin is poor. gives the ball away too much and doesnt want to get it back

    Pressure on SM now

      (Quote)

  6. Sham, I agree I would hate to see Rogers come in. Moyes is another I’m uncertain about. In the end we need a different owner, it’s that simple.

      (Quote)

  7. Clattenberg gets the Manchester Derby we get some muppet, and the rest is now in the record books, we never get Clattenberg or Oliver

      (Quote)

  8. Why is everybody forgetting that for the first 44 minutes we couldn’t score against the worst Sunderland side we have played in the last 5 years? Sunderland could not have been that bad again in the second half so it makes it even more stupid and poor that we failed to score when we completely bossed the game.

Defensively were so pathetic that we need a decent coach who can organise a team. McClaren isn’t that coach. His recent record tells us that.

      (Quote)

  9. Ashley needs to go. we’ll get no-where with him in charge. Wrong buys and not enough signings in the right positions

Horse and cart patter looks embarrassing now.

      (Quote)

  10. What can you say about that ?
It is a s**t way to lose a game because up until the sending off there was only going to be one winner there today.
Yet again it is the decisions of this so called “Football Bored” that is costing this club time and time again !

McClaren was wanting a new Centre-Half brought in and they chose to overrule him in favour of that f**kin’ useless clown Colliccini.
He should never kick a ball for this club ever again and should have been back heeled three years ago.
The man is an accident waiting to happen and the only reason he is hanging around is to do those houses up !

      (Quote)

  11. Kim the only thing that matters is the score at the end. Sunderland were very poor and even up to the time Colo was sent off, yes we had more possession etc but had not managed to score, and that’s all that matters, you do not points for anything else other than the final score.

      (Quote)

  12. Is anyone trying tell me that this squad is so poor that we should have only 6 points after 10 games and conceded 22 goals?

      (Quote)

  13. Yes. We only have 2 decent defenders. We have 1 average CM and 1 good one. We have 1 decent winger if you play Sissoko on the right. We have Mbabu and Aaron’s with promise only at this stage. Big question mark over Aaron’s’ stamina for me. We have 2 decent strikers. The rest of the squad is simply not good enough. Thanks Carr, Charnley and Ashley.

      (Quote)

  14. Schteve has had the “best” window in yonks without any key performers going and bringing in a shedload of quality – Mbemba our best defenderi n years. He has been backed and has not performed. If things carry on Sissoko or Perez will go in Jan and we’ll be relegated.

      (Quote)

  15. Sham – You really think 1 win in 10 is acceptable for these players? Janmaat, Mbemba, Sissiko, Gini, Mitro, Perez, Cisse, De Jong, Colback and Tiote. They should be in the bottom 3 with 6 points?

We are so bad at the back, why don’t we try and sure it up and play more conservatively to try and be difficult to beat?

      (Quote)

  16. @Stuart79

Mitro has only played a handful of games, De Jong a couple, Tiote is just back.

Some players are new, finding their feet… the lack of investment for key areas are to blame and some poor signings

SM is **** but the blame is firmly at Charnley, carrs and Ashleys door

      (Quote)

  17. We tried negative footy last season and not only did we lose all the time, but I fell asleep watching us. I’m not really fussed if we change manager as never wanted McC anyway – but I do believe improvements have been made and that we will get results under him. Ultimately though, the playing squad is just not good enough. Sissoko blows hot and cold and always has done. Tiote is a liability. Colback is average, nothing special. Cisse is not interested.

We only have Gini and Perez that I would class as above average PL class. Mitro and Mbemba both have a lot of potential but have only just stepped up to the PL and we should not be expecting them to carry the team just yet. They are very young. We lack quality and PL experience in the squad and that’s not McC’s fault. Replacing him with another average manager will only unsettle the training regime. We need investment , serious investment and we need to give much more power to the manager. Charnley and Carr need to go otherwise we can expect the same old same old. There is an 8 or 9 year pattern here. Will it always be the managers fault even though he gets no say on transfers?

      (Quote)

  18. I’m at work with a **** load of Mackems being text by a **** load of Mackems!!
Why didn’t I just stick with swimming as a kid!!

      (Quote)

  19. Totally agree Shamrock. The problem is, Ashley is just spending on ‘investment’ type players, some of whom he hopes to make a big profit on. Plus stay in the league for the TV money. It’s okay for him, he can fly off in his helicopter to his mansion in Surrey to stuff his fat face on Sunday dinner. We the fans have to face the stick on Monday morning and for the next five months.

      (Quote)

  20. I agree that the past transfer windows are coming home to roost but Jesus, surely were better than this? We have added 4 good players to the squad since last season and we have got worse! How?!

      (Quote)

  21. McClaren says we’re making progress even though we have a terrible defensive record. He goes on to blame the ref for the result. Didn’t mention the fact we didn’t score in the first 44 mins playing against the worst Sunderland side in years.

      (Quote)

  22. McClaren complained that the ref wasn’t experienced enough because “in big games you need experience” so why do we keep buying young kids?

      (Quote)

  23. Because the ref dubiously gave a penalty is no reason for some of the venom expressed against Colo. Alright, he is not the player he was but that is not an excuse for vilifying him for something that happened in a split second. Blame him if you like for other shortcomings, and I agree he needs replacing, but don’t let bias cloud your judgment. Save your venom for the ref.

      (Quote)

  24. that has got to be the worst mackem side i can remember seeing.

oh ****! they just beat us 3 zip 😯

if 6 points from the first 10 games is not a sacking offence then i don’t know what is 🙁

the plonker has got to go sooner rather than later 😐

      (Quote)

  25. Villa and Sunderland made changes to their management but yet we continue down the same road. I maintain we can do better than McClaren and his appointment was a weak, ambitiousless and down right uninspiring choice.

We’re playing exactly like that too.

      (Quote)

  26. Stu – West Ham as well, and Sam was doing as he always does with them, they were never really in much bother. Just shows how important getting the right man is. Pardew was not the right man, but given the restraints he did pretty much what I’d have expected, as did Hughton.

Carver was a car crash, and Schteve is following in his footsteps. I’ll hold my hand up and say I never wanted him so maybe there is some bias, but I don’t see see much from him to be cheerful about. He seems to have zero confidence, just looking at him 20 minutes in and he had a half smile which seemed to be hiding the fact that he thought we’d **** it up. And we did.

      (Quote)

  27. Groucho, The useless f**k should never have put himself in that position in the first instance and makes no attempt other than barging into Fletcher.
The man is a joke and has been for some considerable time.
Although Williamson is a joke also Colliccini always gets a pass because Willo was the scapegoat.
Now Willo is not in the starting line up you can see how bad Colliccini is and most of the goals we concede come through his mistakes and non existent positioning.

He should have been booted out this summer at the very least but Penfold and Co couldn’t be bothered as usual to do the right thing !

      (Quote)

  28. @181 – I do agree with that, Colo has not just magically become poor, he’s been poor for a while but he was always given the benefit of the doubt because of his partner, usually Willo taking the flack.

Now we have Mbemba, a guy with 0 PL experience who’s only recently turned 21 showing Colo up every week. And Colo’s “leadership” qualities only seem to be deteriorating. Hopefully his absence will allow us to form up a real partnership, because he cost us big time today.

      (Quote)

  29. McLaren clearly isn’t the answer. I would go after Brendan Rodgers immediately. The sending off was ridiculous. We dominated the first half with possession but a lot of it was just knocking it around the back four and back and forward between the midfielders. Sunderland are an extremely poor side yet we lost 3-0 to them under McLaren. Time for him to go or down we go. Spot on Stuart @179.

      (Quote)

  30. Dummett is a poor LB as well. We need a LB, CB, and experienced striker straight away in January.

      (Quote)

  31. Well I don’t see Klopp pulling up many trees at Liverpool, would he really of been our saviour had he come here?

      (Quote)

  32. We need to beat either Stoke or Bournemouth in the next 2 matches (or preferably both) or McLaren should be sacked. Personally I would sack him now and go for Rodgers.

      (Quote)

  33. Not a Rodgers fan Kimtoon lass? 😆 Who could we get that would be better though? I think he works well with young players and would get us sorted as a mid table side. If we stick with McLaren and don’t make some big signings in January we would have to be one of the favourites to go down.

      (Quote)

  34. Personally I would go for Moyes. He can build clubs, gets teams organised and did a great job at Everton under similar circumstances to ours.

Problem is he won’t come and work for a transfer committee that picks the players. McClaren wanted one player this summer – Austin – he got Toney instead. The others were already on the clubs short list.

      (Quote)

  35. I get amazed or I did. Reading the naivety of the bloggers. YKWYA.
Get used to the situation. Ashley is clueless. He appoints casino managers or solicitors or secretary’s to run a multi million pound company that is unique and far removed from the field these people specialise in.
I’ve said it since 2008. Why don’t you listen? Hmm? 🙄

      (Quote)

  36. I said I thought the 4 matches including Norwich, Sunderland, Stoke, and Bournemouth would decide it for McLaren and I’m sticking to that. Anything less than 6 points in those 4 games and he’s gone. So he has to win one of the next two. It’s as simple as that. After that it’s Leicester, Palace, Liverpool and Spurs and we may be done by then. As in relegated before the halfway mark of the season.

      (Quote)

  37. Totally agree that Ashley is clueless Troy mate. But McLaren is not going to work for us. We have a woeful defense and should have upgraded it years ago. Yet McLaren is on the board now isn’t he? So he should have known the season was going to be a disaster. Instead he must have been part to the decision to give Colo a contract extension. What a joke.

      (Quote)

  38. If Lascelles can keep a calm head and be decent with the ball, I think that’s all he needs as he is not quick but Coloccini makes him look fast and he is taller and stronger. Collo can actually head the ball when he can be bothered, but that is in games against Chelsea and Sunderland and that is it. He doesn’t want to get hurt in most games and just goes through the motions! Tho is an opportunity for someone to stake a claim now, to partner M’Bemba. They are still young, like Perez and Mitrovic are, but someone has to be given a chance. Mbemba is a million miles better than the other three now and shows what we have been missing.

      (Quote)

  39. We are a disaster as usual under Ashley and his flunkeys. Six points from 10 games! ? ? You couldn’t make it up. Absolute rubbish. The Colo sending off was a poor decision but our team fell apart under pressure again.

      (Quote)

  40. Troy – I blame McClaren that we have won only 1 in 10 and have conceded 22 goals in 10 games. We have a better squad and first team than last year but we are worse – if that’s even possible! That has to be the coaches fault.

      (Quote)

  41. G2 – McClaren himself told a caller on Radio Newcastle that the best signing was the re-signing of Collocini. That says everything!

      (Quote)

  42. It should be fun to watch the drivel pour out of Charnley’s mouth. Something like:
“We acknowledge mistakes have been made. But with Steve McLaren and his coaches we know we have a strong base to build on…..Blah, blah, blah…..”

      (Quote)

  43. Yep that does tell the story Stuart mate. Colo was done and should have been gone last season. Now it’s this season and 2 more! What a joke. I would rather see Lascelles out there getting experience or better still a top CB in January.

      (Quote)

  44. Collo looks classy with the ball and can play football but if you watch carefully, what does he actually do with it? He’s actually quite slow with it and slows the game down before passing to the LB or the other centre back. He also comes charging out and leaves a gap at the back often. Lascelles can pass the ball sideways and do what Collo does. But he can maybe score from a corner, or head the ball away from a corner at the other end. We need a CB to just be a CB. Collo gives an illusion of class, but how many goal have we actually conceded?

      (Quote)

  45. As it stands now we look like a team that could finish the season with less than 30 points. How do we avoid relegation with that?

      (Quote)

  46. By the way, it’s horrible watching our club captain and best defender over the past 5 years playing so badly and getting so much stick. I really hope the club bring in a defender in January so we can take him out of the firing line. He’s not good enough to be our regular centre half now but he certainly doesn’t deserve the stick he’s getting. He’s been too good a player for that to happen. I actually blame the club for this. They’ve let it get to this point with their **** poor penny pinching.

      (Quote)

  47. Ten games is enough to assess the team. I would give us a failing grade. Three or four out of ten. Abysmal in defense, inconsistent in the midfield, and inexperienced in attack. We do have promising players in Wij, Perez, and Mitro but it’s not nearly enough. I thought you said you need 10 games Troy mate? Well what’s your judgment?

      (Quote)

  48. <<<<<<<<<<<<< did not think it was a pen and shoulder to shoulder competeing for the space is not a foul also, the ref needs sacking if he dont know the rules of the game, wonder how much he got payed cause he looked like he had been bought off to me,how many fouls that clattermore make and still did not book him wonder why

      (Quote)

  49. Spot on Stuart @202. I used to really enjoy watching Colo at the top of his game. Good positional sense, excellent ball control and passing. Now he’s too slow and because he isn’t big enough either he just flat out gets beaten far too often.

      (Quote)

  50. I have noticed a distinct lack of comments by Lionel and TDS since the first game of the season. Is it coincidence?

      (Quote)

  51. The lack of at least a yellow card for Catermole was shocking as well TAE mate. That ref should never have been chosen for a crucial derby.

      (Quote)

  52. I think TDS got tired of people telling him the team was rubbish under Ashley Stuart mate. But I think we are right in saying it. The team and the club are rubbish under Ashley.

      (Quote)

  53. Here we are arguing the merits of a match between what was a 19th and 20th place team. Absolute drivel. And Ashley bears the blame entirely.

      (Quote)

  54. We had lots of possession TAE mate @210. But I didn’t notice any goals going in against a shocking defensive side.

      (Quote)

  55. we played good footie til the ref intervention only a matter of time before we scored and no way would we have lost that

      (Quote)

  56. I mean the amount of smegma that was collecting on the pitch today was horrific. Get rid of Dummett, Colo, Obertan, Willo, and Saylor. Bring in 2 decent CB’s a LB, a striker, a decent holding midfielder and start over again Ashley.

      (Quote)

  57. But we did lose TAE mate. 3-0 I believe the score was. No amount of imaginary football will bring us points in the table sadly. Otherwise I would imagine us an undefeated season. Simple as that.

      (Quote)

  58. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< did not see obertan willianson and taylor on the pitch meself maybe i got something wrong with me eyes 😯

      (Quote)

  59. Oh and clean the smegma out from between your ears as well Ashley. You’re a pathetic man who thinks Wonga is a decent business partner for the club. Hopefully you eventually slip and fall into a pool of your own sh*te Mike.

      (Quote)

  60. Nope the smegma on the pitch today did not include Obertan, Willo and Saylor TAE. But I still want them out of the squad. They should have been gone years ago. They are part of the reason we are a very poor side with little or no future in the Prem under Mike.

      (Quote)

  61. Colo needs a good spell on the bench. I’d play dummetts and Mbemba with haidara coming in. Not great but what choices do we have. No fit left backs, Lascelles doesn’t look ready…may we see Willo back in the team 😳

      (Quote)

  62. STUART79
maybe hes embassed about collo after giveing his 1 year extension the thumbs up 😆 😆 😆 id also be keeping a low profile if i was him after watching some of collos pityfull efforts of what he calls defending 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  63. What a **** season! We just watch them disappear under Ashley every year.
Decent players wondering why they ever signed here.
Every year we sign potentials and expect them to blend with our 2nd raters. Makes me sick how Ashley runs us

      (Quote)

  64. Well that’s about it for me today. I was disturbed by the poor refereeing as much as anybody but we lost today and saying we played well defies logic. We had the majority of the possession in the first half. That’s all. We didn’t use it to take the lead and when the ref lost his mind we buckled under the pressure and lost by 3. That ain’t no silk purse mates, it’s a sow’s ear.

      (Quote)

  65. Why doesn’t Ashley just say “**** it, I’m going to make an appointment of a top class manager”? Why not just go all out for a Moyes or a De Boer? Surely it’s time to make a proper appointment for the most important person at the club!?

      (Quote)

  66. Decent managers are ambitious Stu. We only sign manager who are privileged to be here and will accept anything Ashley throws at them

      (Quote)

  67. an absolute powder puff team who are dropping like flies. Outmuscled and outthought by one of the worst Sunderland teams in years…

Extending Collocinis contract was a disaster.

As for Thauvin, the bloke responsible for chasing him for 2 years despite the fact that everyone in France knows he’s pish AND paying so much money for him wants there heeds looking at !! How to go from Hatem Ben Arfa, via Cabella to Thauvin…what an absolute cluster fuk of decision making !…
