Coloccini’s red rightly overturned, but the FA still baffle….

Madley's madness
Madley’s madness
So the good news is that Fabricio Coloccini has had the red card that was shown to him on Sunday overturned.

Common sense has prevailed regarding a decision that was quite frankly ludicrous.

Whether or not it was a penalty for a forceful shoulder charge is debatable, but a red card offence? Never…

Of course it won’t change the result even though the feeling among many including myself was that it would probably have ended differently had we maintained eleven men on the pitch. It’s all irrelevant now anyway. But I’m glad that common sense has been used. There are moves underway to get rid of the so called “triple penalty” for instances such as this for next season with a new, more common sense approach, being favoured.

It’s long been argued that conceding a penalty is, by its name, a penalty anyway. But this is where the common sense should come into force. Was it a dangerous challenge? Not in this case. Was it an obvious goalscoring opportunity? The FA seem to think it wasn’t.

Anyway I guess it’s all down to interpretation of each rule but it’s the punishment that needs looking at. Had this appeal failed we’ve conceded a penalty anyway, had a man sent off and also had him banned for, in this case, an additional game. It’s over the top and should be looked at not just because of this but also throughout football.

What doesn’t sit well with me is that the FA have now charged us for failing to control the players in the aftermath of what has proved to be a wrong decision. So how dies that work? Do the FA not understand that the players may have felt a sense of injustice at an incorrect decision? Are they not allowed to even vent their frustration or argue their point?

It seems not and it appears that players should just accept what a referee says – no matter how wrong it may be.

  1. I was shocked and horrified Eric mate @75. Penalty yes, sending off, no. I demand a replay. I demand satisfaction from Sunderland. I will challenge them to a duel. Crisp lettuce leaves at 10 paces. They will pay. 👿

  2. Sorry G2: I should have been more specific. Was that you, the John Gibson lookalike with a limp?

  3. Has anyone ever tried a 1-6-3 formation in the Prem? Overwhelm them in midfield. Mbemba as rover. Complete confidence in attack. We’re never actually in our own half so nothing to worry aboot there.

  4. STUART the standard of refs in the PL is a disgrace the sackless sods are full time now on a canny screw, sure they were better when part time the better ones got what the FA thought were the the better games while the others tried to up their standards there all on the wage bill now so its a lucky dip

  5. I’ve aged better than Mel Eric mate. I take a much better mugshot than him. As for that 9-0-1 formation I’m against it! It’s a little too defensive even for us. Surely 2-7-1 would be better. We play for a quick lead and then hang on.

  6. G2: I will introduce you to my mate @74 and his mates. They specialize in mugshots especially at the end of the season.

  7. Does anyone want to take the bet that Palace will not finish above 9th? 50 quid? And that includes you Troysta. If I lose I will send the money to the SBR Foundation.

  8. So, if we assume there is a top six of:

    Man City
    ****
    Man U
    Spurs
    Chelsea
    Liverpool

Then judging by the current table there is:

    West Ham
    Palace
    Swansea
    Southampton
    Everton

Competing for the 2 remaining top 8 places. If Pardew is so FKin fantastic he must be able to get one of those spots? 50 quid Troysta. Put your money where your mouth is.

  9. why the shock G2 ?
He would be perfect for them, that is the level he is at.
I actually thought he would do a good job at Leeds, but that never came off.
He’s actually not that bad a defender, but struggles when pressed.
He gives 100% but he’s just not premiership class. Not his fault the feckless Percy kept picking him.

  10. The FA are a joke. Nothing new I know, but to overturn and then being upset with our players after getting a game changing decision wrong….Obviously refs should still be shown respect on the pitch, but did we really have 9 players surrounding, screaming and swearing at the ref like say, Manchester United or Chelsea do (which is rarely ever punished on or off field?).

Football really does my head in.

  11. So Colback is looking likely to be out for months rather than weeks…

Interesting January coming up. In my opinion we need a striker, centre half and a good centre midfielder who can at least defend.

      (Quote)

  12. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< they changed the rules at the start of the season you could only have 1 or 2 players talk to the ref im not sure which but i think its 2 we had more than that round the ref so a fine is standard for that

  13. got to respect the ref 🙄 even when he has made a right balls up of a **** decsion 😯

  14. I watched the Man Utd v Boro game last night. Boro played really well, but I really liked the look of Jesse Lingaard for Man U. I think we were trying to loan him in the summer, I’d defo go for him in Jan though if Utd would let him go.

      (Quote)

  15. Georgio: so you had to go to Italy to find a teenage keeper. Who is he and is he playing in an emergency? There are sometimes prodigies who break the mold but it doesn’t happen often. Even Jack Butland, who is the England heir apparent was loaned out for most of his career so far to get experience. He started this year at age 22. He started a couple of games in an emergency in the PL in his early 20’s and then was loaned out again.

I stand by my statement that teenage goalies do not play in the PL except under extraordinary circumstances. Maybe Elliot being **** will be one of these 🙂 They did think enough of him to extend his contract in the summer though.

      (Quote)

  16. Just for the hell of it I added up Thauvin’s minutes played in the PL. It comes to 292 (excluding extra time because I couldn’t find those stats). I really have no idea if he is any good or not, but he has played just over 3 games for us and people are writing him off already.

      (Quote)

  17. Stuart: I think they sent Colback to a specialist for a second scan so that doesn’t sound good. Hopefully it is not the same one they keep sending Steven Taylor to.

      (Quote)

  18. Eric – regarding keepers, do you reckon we go with who we have or do we bring Valdes in if he’s an option?

      (Quote)

  19. Sharpy: I have seen Darlow for 1 half in Milwaukee and he is out for another month. I have never even seen Woodman I just know that teenage ‘keepers are only used in extreme emergencies in the PL. If we can loan Valdes for 6 months I say do it as he is very experienced and Woodman may even learn from him.

I am not stuck on the ‘keeper situation, it just seems we did not learn from last year. However, it is unusual to have your two first choice keepers laid up with long term injuries.

      (Quote)

  20. Eric – I think that’s my biggest issue at the moment – I haven’t seen enough of Darlow or Woodman to be confident they are good enough. But I do know I don’t have a great deal of confidence in Elliott. So on that basis I think Valdes could be a good option – however he seems like a bit of a prima Donna so it would depend on where his heads at.

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy I wrote this on Monday before the Star predictor

“I’ve still got faith it’ll come right for two reasons. I’m actually enjoying the games these days which I haven’t done for 3 years, particularly the last 4 games. There’s definite improvements there.
Secondly I think we’re better than at least 5 teams and eventually that will show. Personally I think a very low points total will keep us up. 32 maybe.”

Maybe their man reads the blog!

      (Quote)

  22. Georgio – I’m enjoying the football too mate, it’s the best we’ve played in a long long time, but the results have to start coming. If you and the predictor are right then that will be a really freak season to survive with only 30 odd points.
I still want to see some decent investment in Jan though, even if that means loan deals too.

      (Quote)

  23. Sharpy – we need two players that will really make a difference. Both strong dominant guys at CB and DM – have no idea who they’d be though. And no sticking to the under 26 stupidity.

      (Quote)

  24. Georgio – I would love to see either Joel Matip or Nicolas N’Koulou come in for CB. Midfield is a difficult one, but I like Leroy Fer and Lewis Holtby personally. But it depends on what their ideas are going forward. I’d love to see us playing a 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1 type formation. I’d also look to bring in someone like Nathan Redmond, Andros Townsend or Jesse Lingard in as well – 3 players in now and then sort a contract to bring Austin in the summer.

      (Quote)

  25. I remember some on here slagging Swansea off under Rogers because they played really good football but never scored!

Surely results are more important than performance? If Pardew had started the season with these results he’d be lynched and he never had £50m to spend either. The football should be better with the new players brought in!

      (Quote)

  26. So Williamson has gone on loan to Wolves and we proabably wont see him back . Maybe the start of shifting the deadwood too make way for a couple of january signings? Bigi next followed by Gouffran maybe. These players are not getting a look in under McClaren.

      (Quote)

  27. Stuart: Pardew would have been lynched because he had a history of playing **** football at NUFC. I want to give McClaren a chance but occasionally get fed up contemplating yet another relegation battle. The football is better though and I think we have had a lot of bad luck (Pards and Carver did as well mind). Maybe we are cursed?

      (Quote)

  28. For the record, I don’t think anybody wishes Williamson anything but good luck at Wolves. Just wish it had happened 2 years earlier 🙂 Can you believe he made over 170 appearances for NUFC? I haven’t looked but I bet that is more than Gazza and more than Tony Green.

      (Quote)

  29. Jimmy Smith, 124 league appearances + 5 as Sub. It is absolutely amazing that these players that I remember so fondly from my youth played so few games compared to a plank like Willo. But good luck to him and hopefully his move will be made permanent.

      (Quote)

  30. I certainly wish Willo luck at Wolves, and hope this opportunity allows him to find a decent Championship club in the summer. The bloke always tried his best for us, he wasn’t the best but he never hid – not his fault and I appreciate a player that respects the shirt and tries.

      (Quote)

  31. Sharpy: it is quite nice that nobody really bears any animosity to Williamson and just realises his limitations. It is a pity the managers and board did not see what the fans saw and replaced him earlier. His situation was not helped by that free kick routine that was used over and over and NEVER worked.

      (Quote)

  32. Good luck to you Willo. You played some good games for us (and some terrible ones). You should have been a stopgap for a season or two but our management were clueless. Even Pardew finally clued in to the fact you weren’t good enough.

      (Quote)

  33. I highly recommend Willo as set piece target man for Wolves if they don’t want to score any goals as Eric says. 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Georgio: they just happen to be replaying the Milan game and that ‘keeper is a manchild. I am not saying it negates your point about a teenager playing for one of Europe’s top clubs. But the kid is about 6-7 and 16 stone

      (Quote)

  35. I certainly have no animosity towards Willo hè was a limited but honest player who played with pride , i just wish that Some of our other players would take notice of his mindset and copy his professional approach . Imagine if Sissoko , Collo ,Cisse ,Tiote and a few others had the same mindset and pride for the shirt , we would be a lot futher forward than we are now.

      (Quote)

  36. Axel – couldnt have put it better myself mate 😉

Stu – and he goes unpunished for it!!. He’ll be seen as a hero over there as well, getting the turncoat!. No wonder we couldn’t control our players with thugs like that kicking lumps out of them and going totally unpunished

      (Quote)

  37. I would like to see us loan Victor Valdes in Jan along with either Jesse Lingard or Andros Townsend.
The I want to see us buying either Joel Matip or Nicolas N’Koulou in defence and buy Leroy Fer or Ever Banega for our midfield.
If we can get 4 in in Jan then that would confirm to me that the club still have ambition and continue to back McClaren.

      (Quote)

  38. SHARPY Leroy Fer would be a great buy hè played with Gini when they were both at Feyenoord and hè has premiership experience with both Norwich and Qpr . My feeling is we need to bring in more EPL expirenced players in the next window and certainly no more French players from their own competion .

      (Quote)

  39. Axel – I’m a big fan of Fers to be honest mate. I think he’s a midfielder who’s good on the tackle, can pass the ball with both feet and can be a real threat going forward. I think Banega ticks all those boxes as well mind but you’re right, Fer has the experience to go straight in there.

      (Quote)

  40. SHARPY i agree about Fer him and Gini were seen as the future of Feyenoord when they both broke through from the youth ranks , but with Feyenoord in financial problems at the time both were moved on . I honestly think they would be brilliant played together and would give us a new dimension through the middle of the park.

      (Quote)

  41. Anyone who actually knows anything about football, can tell that we’re playing better under the current set up than under the last with Pardew, Carver etc. Players like Williamson and Gouffran are not getting a look in, they were both Pardew favorites, those who know nowt and point to the result on their phone, wearing a cape in the Irish Centre and fantasising over a manager of the month award, are clueless about the transformation we are undergoing, and will not admit they were wrong when things turn around. You just watch and mark my words. YCMIU.

      (Quote)

  42. Axel – I wonder if we could give QPR £15m for both Austin & Fer in Jan. I know what you’re saying about PL experience, but I see Matip & N’Koulou as top quality CBs. I think Townsend or Lingard would be ideal at rightside forward with Perez on the left side. Something resembling this –

    ——————— Valdes —————–
    Janmaat – Mbemba – Matip – Mbabu
    —— Sissoko —- Gini —- Fer ——-
    Lingard ————————– Perez
    ——————– Mitrovic —————–

It could be Townsend for Lingard or N’Koulou for Matip. But that’s my hope for the team going forward anyway.

      (Quote)

  43. Open letter from McClaren I see. We’ve had more letter San de-mails this season than we have points…

      (Quote)

  44. So Stevie Mc has guaranteed us 3 points this weekend … spoiler alert!! I think I know how this one ends 🙄

      (Quote)

  45. Sharpy – I’m not a fan of either Lingard or Townshend and with that team who’s the DM type? Fer isn’t it. We need someone far more dominant than that.

I’m not confident against Stoke. Chelsea couldn’t get past them. They have about 5 who’ll kick lumps out of us like Clattermole and some real skill in Shaqiri and Bojan. They say teams resemble their managers . . .

      (Quote)

  46. Georgio – I’d personally favour Lingard if we could get him in. I think he’s as good as Nathan Redmond at Norwich, he’s just at a club when he’s limited in his chances. I think him & Perez could link up really well behind/alongside Mitrovic.
As for Fer, I accept he’s not your traditional defensive midfielder, but I can’t think of many teams that have that player anymore. The trio of Sissoko/Gini/Fer for me gives us 3 players who can all tackle, pass/create, run at players and score goals. They would need to come to an understanding in terms of when one or two go forward, who sits in and who goes and when – but they are 3 top quality players who should have no problem finding that quickly.

      (Quote)

  47. Georgio – I think what I want to see from the ‘new look’ Newcastle is that we arent dependant on one player anymore. As in when Tiote is injured our midfield looks vulnerable or when Cisse is out we struggle to score.
I would love to see a midfield 3 who are capable of defending as a unit, but each of them possess an individual attacking threat.

      (Quote)

  48. My team to face Stoke would be

    ———————- Krul ——————-
Janmaat- Mbemba – Colo – Dummett
    ——- Anita —— Tiote —– Gini ——-
    Sissoko ————————– Perez
    —————— Mitrovic ——————

      (Quote)

  49. I see Krul’s back already!

    ———————- Elliott ——————-
Janmaat- Mbemba – Colo – Mbabu
    Sissoko —- Anita
    Perez ————– Gini——– Aarons
    —————— Mitrovic ——————

      (Quote)

  50. Georgio – 😳 force of habit I think there mate. Is Aarons fit?

If he is I’d swap Sissoko for Anita and play Aarons in that front 3 instead.

      (Quote)

  51. Sharpy: I think Aarons is fit. I think we will start with your team apart from Krul but could easily end the match with Georgio’s (maybe Haidara instead of MBabu as he has more experience, but MBabu played better).

MBabu should be cover for Janmaat now? He was only drafted in as an emergency left back.

      (Quote)

  52. Anita is too small for the Prem. Nothing can change that. We have even more defensive problems now with Colback and Krul out. Not sure about Tiote. He gets far too many cards, that’s obvious. How good he can be at this point remains an open question.

      (Quote)

  53. When was the last time we were out of the bottom 5? It must be November or early December of last year. So poor for so long. Well done Ashley.

      (Quote)

  54. I’d rather see some points on the board than make all these predictions about how good we are DJG mate @133. So far we are good enough to be 19th. That’s all. We have shipped 22 goals already and have a poor, poor defense. As far as I can tell we might be able to crawl up above 18th in a month or so but that’s about it. Anything else has to be proven on the pitch.

      (Quote)

  55. GEORDIETWO your bang on That our defence is very poor and i cant believe collo is still in it , but als hè is our captain hè seems undropable . Here is a thought Lets play him als the DM hè Has played their for Argentina , Lets face it Tiote has been poor the last 2 seasons ,Colback is injured so would it not be worth a try . From That position maybe hè could be more of a leader too and do the armband proud , maybe this line up if everyone is fit could do a job .

    ————————Eliott———————
    Janmaat—-Mbemba–Dummett–Mbabu
    ———————-collo———————-
    —————Sissoko—-Gini————-
    Perez————Mitro————Aarons

If Aarons is not ready thenThauvin and Haidara for Mbabu .Collo’s lack of pace would be possibly less of a hinderence with Players with pace infront and behind him, Collo is a better passer than Tiote and Will look too get the team moving forward instemde of sideways and back passes.

      (Quote)

  56. It’s worth thinking about Axel mate @147 but Colo is slowing down with age. The right side of your lineup is a worry as well (and has caused us problems many times this season so I’m not criticizing you mate). Sissoko doesn’t track back enough and Janmaat gets caught upfield too often on fast breaks against us. I like Dummett better at CB than LB but it’s still a very weak defense. Horrible choices really. Look at our goals against record Ashley. Twenty two against us in 10 games. Sell up.

      (Quote)

  57. Colback being out tomorrow will hopefully bring about a change in style. Tiote should be the only defensive midfielder. I think SMc might go with De Jong although I would prefer to see Aarrons
