Smash and grab! Bournemouth 0-1 Newcastle

A Rob Elliot inspired Newcastle managed to rob three points from Bournemouth in the early kick-off today.

A rare away victory for United lifts them out of the relegation zone ahead of the international break ensuring that the Toon Army make the long trip home with at least something to show for it.

Just a week after bemoaning the performance of Jack Butland for Stoke it is now us who should be thankful for a goalkeeping masterclass provided by Elliot between the stick who pulled off a number of important saves and generally dealt with anything that was thrown at him. And in fairness there was quite a lot thrown at him.

There have been times where we’ve performed really well as a team but have had to settle for nothing or little from the game but today was a polar opposite of that. In truth we were awful, Bournemouth bossed it by showing tremendous energy and a willingness to attack with pace but they were unable to find the back of the net whilst we did. That was the difference today. Isn’t football a funny old game?

I can’t recall many of the attempts that Bournemouth had, and that’s not me being ignorant it’s more a case of they had so many to choose from.

Meanwhile United struggled to make any real impact in the game with only a well-worked goal from Ayoze Perez after good combination work between Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum gave the Spaniard a sight at goal which is all he needed to put us in front. The other chance of note was a header by Fabricio Coloccini which went narrowly over the bar.

Make no bones about it, we were bad today but you have to give credit to Bournemouth for their hard work which had a hand in us being so bad. They pressed us all game long and despite running out of steam right at the death they made it exceptionally hard for us to find any sort of rhythm or build any sort of move. People will focus on us being bad without giving credit to a side that has cause pretty much everyone they’ve faced so far a hard time.

But the important thing is tree points. During the week the consensus was that we’re playing better but it didn’t really matter as we were getting nothing to show for it. Well today we got the exact opposite, isn’t that what people wanted?

Howay the lads!

  1. Happy for the win Toonsy, and you are spot on B/mouth have pressed everyone like that not just us. Feel very sorry for the cherries as we were in the same position last week and against the scum too.

Stu@132 last thread, you say” we won because Bournemouth couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo!”
Right, that’ll be why Elliot made so many saves then and got MOTM. 🙄

  2. seen us play teams off the pitch and not get 3 points so i dint really care if we played **** today 😆

      (Quote)

  3. Yep happy with the win. May have played badly but not worried about that. We have played ‘well’ most of the season without winning so I know we have it in us to play prettier football when required. The important thing is despite everything Bournemouth threw at us, we dug deep and got 3 points, climbing out of the relegation zone in the process. Job done and things are looking up.

  4. Well i did not get too see the game , were we reallly that bad? I have seen the stats of the game but That does not allways tell the real story , was it good defending by us or were they just poor infront of goal ? Still whatever , we won and this could be the turning point of the season .

  5. Axel – we were horrific mate, even Perez looked bad and he went down very lightly which was a shame to see. Luckily he had a moment of quality to win it for us. Elliot was superb though, and Mbemba and Colo mostly solid.

      (Quote)

  6. But other than that, very happy iwth the three points! 😀 Hopefully will give us some confidence that we can win playing poorly. Sign of a good team right?…

  7. Shocking performance but a win is a win !
Matt Ritchie is 26 years old and has come on a tonne in the last couple of years.
I thought his crossing today was excellent although there was no one to get on the end of them.
Mitrovic could benefit greatly from that kind of service so does anyone on here think the lad would be worth a punt for us ?
He fits the blue print although a certain calorie challenged gentleman never puts his hand in his pocket for British players !

      (Quote)

  8. Axel@4, we were absolutely shocking mate, and could quite easily have conceded 2 or 3. Sissoko, Wijnaldum and Janmaat all dawdled through the game, whilst Anita and Mitrovic were absolutely shocking.
Elliot, Collo, Mbweba and Perez got plus points, the rest were way off the pace..

Still, 3 points is 3 points, and the Saturday night is good for a change !

      (Quote)

  9. We got three point’s that’s good. We deserved to lose and played absolutely terrible but I’m going to enjoy this rare victory none the less.

      (Quote)

  10. Kim – Bournemouth’s strikers were woeful. They missed at least two clear cut chances and didn’t even hit the target with them!

Reality is we won but we looked like we were playing Barcelona and it was Bournemouth!

    20 shots to our 2…

We take it though and move on.

      (Quote)

  11. Stem – shocking isn’t it, puts their win in perspective. I know we were somewhat robbed, but if we didn’t gift them points like we have every season then they’d have been relegated each feckin season.

Need them to go down this time and just be rid of that bloody fixture.

      (Quote)

  12. Munich – I’ve always said as much mate but i’m tired of us getting dicked by them now, the ref may have done us over (he has done a few times in that fixture like) but our lot just never seem as up for it as the scum, even if they’re much better footballers!

Send them down into oblivion and let the smoggies come up, we might beat them at least 😆

      (Quote)

  13. Undeserved 3 points 😛 sweet…..

Luckily, Elliot didn’t jump ship after we kicked him to the curb 😳

      (Quote)

  14. NEWKIE &MUNICH thanks for the feedback we were ***** then but thats karma we should of won the last 2 games . Who would of thought after 12 games we would-be only 1 point behind Chelsea 😯 before the season started we all would of took that LOL

      (Quote)

  15. I’d be quite happy if I never saw Sunderland in the Prem again. Couldn’t give a flyer for the Derby or “its good for the area” ****.

      (Quote)

  16. Well it looks like its all been said.
played ***** and came away with the 3 points. 😯 😛
Nowt ever makes sense when it comes to NUFC.
But it seems we have too many fair weather players, who dont like the rain.
High praise to Elliott, well deserved.
    Happy days

      (Quote)

  17. The way they’ve behaved the past few years when er’ve gifted the jammey feckers survival, I hope they go down, (ruin Fat Sam’s ‘never relegated’ tag) and that some manager completes the job McMenemy started, so that their derby is against Darlo.

Lucky today, but we were due that after mackems and stoke. Fixtures even out over the next 7 games, after the bad start we had. I think we’re 2-3 points off par so far. Expect us to be on 20-22 points after 19. Will still need a striker, full back and DCM.

      (Quote)

  18. GTE – so you are expecting another 10 – 12 points from the next 7 fixtures 😕
    Leicester
    Palace
    Liverpool
    Spurs
    Villa
    Everton
    West Brom.
How the hell do we get anything from the Leicester game ?
They are scoring goals for fun.
we wont beat palace away and will get nowt from Liverpool or spurs.
should beat villa and Everton and West Brom could go either way.
Be lucky imho if we get 6 or 7 points from those 7 fixtures.
But I do hope you’re right and I’m wrong. lol

      (Quote)

  19. BB: I was thinking 15-18 points by January would probably see us stay up if we get another CB and forward.

You scared of Leicester? Palace aren’t that good at home and you never know what you will see with Everton and Spurs. West Brom will play for a draw. I think we might even get 18-20 points TOTAL before January. But you can never figure out NUFC so we could remain on 10 🙂

      (Quote)

  20. The biggest revelation today was John Carver saying will be spending another £50m next summer. Providing we stay up that is…

      (Quote)

  21. Well I just cannot work out these so called pundits,Chelsea are one point above us and some pundits are still saying they can finish 4th in the PL,yes we were bloody lucky today,I said on the last thread you can play fancy attacking footy all day but if you cannot put the ball in the net you get nowt like we did against Stoke/Scum,our turn for a bit of luck but don’t
want to see another game like that

      (Quote)

  22. Plus there is Villa. Garde will have to be a magician to get anything from that lot. They sold the only player that ever scored for them.

      (Quote)

  23. Football is strange. We batter the Mackems and get beat 3-0. Aliens abducted all of our players today except Elliot, and replaced them with Shola and Amdy Faye clones. And we win. YCMIU.

      (Quote)

  24. Eric – scared of Leicester ?
No. But they are flying right now.
Vardy has scored in 9 matches on the trot. I think the record is 10.
He will be on a mission to equal that if he can.
If we pla like today, I dont fancy wor chances. Do you ?
Hopefully today was an all time low, from which we can only get better.

      (Quote)

  25. That’s what I was saying BB. I don’t know which team will turn up for us – the one that wins when playing ***** or the one that overwhelms the Mackems and gets beat 3 nil.

      (Quote)

  26. I think we were going to go on to beat the mackems, Eric, but the ref put an end to that.
Can’t legislate for gash refereeing unfortunately.

      (Quote)

  27. Anyhow, I think we can take something positive from todays debarcle and move forwards. To start with, Elliott isn’t as bad as some would like to make out. And the team spirit is still good.
Leicester at home will be very interesting. Bring it on.

      (Quote)

  28. Don’t really fancy our chances against Leicester, they’ve beaten much better sides than us and we won’t be as lucky as today if we play at the same level…Our point against Chelsea is also looking less and less impressive by the week! If we’d just held that bloody lead..

      (Quote)

  29. Vardy has scored in 10 games and needs to score in one more to break the record from Van Nistelroy. *** if Macca stops him from scoring against us and we get another 1-0 I think I will cry tears of laughter and joy. God bless.Macca and Simpson.

      (Quote)

  30. It is 9 games with a penalty today. Shearer never complained about his penalties though 🙂

We don’t get fckin penalties anymore. I think we have had one in 2 years.

      (Quote)

  31. Troysta: so your predictions were a loss today and at Scum and England to win the Euros. Mark your words or mock your words 🙂

      (Quote)

  32. ERIC SYKES
so why cant we win the euros bud you seem to be mocking englands chances ? 😯

      (Quote)

  33. Also TAE: I was using Troy’s words to mock him. He is the one that says mark his words or mock his words.

      (Quote)

  34. I hope we can beat Palace. My sole aim is to finish above them. 🙂

Troy’s middle-aged manlove for his Percy has replaced my hatred for Sunderland to Palace 😛

      (Quote)

  35. In some matches (probably the majority) we need to abandon the two defensive midfielders. It just doesn’t work. If there number one job is to protect the back four they are failing miserably. We have conceded a shed load of goals and yesterday our goalie was man of the match.

If we play one of the three I would choose a fit Tiote he always has and always will be a better player than Anita or Colback.

Who we bring in would be a toss up between Thauvin and Aarrons but with youngster out for six weeks the it has to Thauvin.

      (Quote)

  36. TLR
imagine how many goals we’d concede if we didn’t have 6 defenders 😯

Agree about the two defensive midfielders but I think SM knows we’re vulnerable at the back

      (Quote)

  37. TLR@41 – all three mentioned defensive midfielders are average at best, whereas Tiote is slow, has a poor passing range, and is in fact a liability.

      (Quote)

  38. I actually thought Tiote had a decent game yesterday. He looks fit again after 2 years off. 1 of only 4 though, the rest were dreadful especially the front 4. Can’t understand how they can look so good in the last few then disappear totally. Full backs were poor too. It’s possible Mbabu is better than them both!

      (Quote)

  39. Can’t see Janmaat being around much longer. The bloke has the same body language as Sissoko, just not interested… Both of them are going through the motions…

      (Quote)

  40. mm, I agree on the attitude thing. yesterday too many failed to put in a shift, sissoko drives me nuts in particular. It’s a shame because we do have some very good players but they really need to be more consistent if we are going to help ourselves. The two previous games we looked far tighter and our passing and creativity much better albeit we didn’t get rewarded for it. We have to reinforce our back line in January and I would like a creative MF player like Cabaye we need a good crosser of the ball too if Mitro is to be effective.

      (Quote)

  41. Agree about the Cabaye type Kim – been saying it for a long time. It’s exactly what we’re missing.
I wonder about yesterday. Was the weather affecting them. You know, bloody foreigners, can’t stand the rain and wind. It left bloody Gosling running the midfield!
As for bigger clubs coming in for our “stars” – just send them a tape of yesterdays game.

      (Quote)

  42. Georgio, if they are effected by a drop of wind and rain then god help them when the north east winter really starts to bite.

      (Quote)

  43. So Siko demands £100,000 a week to stay at toon he’s only into second yr of six yr contract,I know what I would tell him bye bye,he’s only a bit part player, he only plays when “he” fancys it

      (Quote)

  44. ERIC SYKES
the best team dont allways win thought ya would of learned that over the last 3 games 😯

      (Quote)

  45. Yes TAE: and England have not won a major tournament since 1966. And France, Germany and Spain have won how many? And France are playing at home and Germany just won the last World Cup and Spain won the one before and The Euros before that.

The best teams don’t always win but England have a lot to beat next year.

      (Quote)

  46. ERIC SYKES
past history has nothing to do with it,anything can happen in the knockout stages,we prob sending the best team to a torney that we have sent for a long time now 😉

      (Quote)

  47. TAE: past history has nothing to do with what? Germany has won 5 world cups. Spain won the last 2 Euros and the world cup before Germany. Germany scored 7 against Brazil in the semi-final a year and a bit ago. THAT IS RECENT HISTORY.

I really would like to see England win but the best player from our shores is Welsh (Bale).

Who was the Premier League’s player of the year last year? Hazard. And before that? Aguero or Suarez?

Woy will play Rooney as centre forward so we are guaranteed no goals.

      (Quote)

  48. STUART @55 I agree mate we need to put 100% in every game not a player that plays 1 game in 10 if your lucky, out in Jan imo we might also see a improvement in other players when they see the effort put in by a m/f player

      (Quote)

  49. TAE: do you remember the South Africa World Cup? I had a party when the US played England in the group stage. I bought a 47 inch TV and had beer and sandwiches and everything. At about 70 minutes I was saying that England are not usually that bad and Rooney is not really that **** either. I was wrong, England are that bad and Rooney is ***** in big games.

      (Quote)

  50. Oh, and TAE: I will put a bet on with you and Troysta that England do not win the Euro. I will give you 5 to 1. How about that? Minimum bet for you 2 is 100 pounds.

      (Quote)

  51. 7 to 1. I think I am not even worried with those odds since I have Germany, France and Spain and you have fcking England 🙂

      (Quote)

  52. BB @21, my points (min vs max) from next 7:

    Leicester
    Palace
between these two games, I’d expect us to get 2-3 points, could be one good game, one disaster, or a couple of sterile draws

    Liverpool 1 or even 3
Not convinced by the Klopp revolution

Spurs 0 – can’t see owt here, unless Elliot emulates Krul again

    Villa
    Everton
    West Brom
i think we’ll get five or six points from this group of three games, Villa at home being a must win, Everton could turn up and do us, but could go the other way, and I’d epext us to compete with WBA away

So that’s a range of 8-12 points from the 7 games. I’d be happy enough with 10. We still blow hot and cold, so in one crazy scenario could see us beating Liverpool and Everton and losing to West Brom, Leicester and Palace, but the home form (Watford apart, when Mitro not suspended and we’d have scored more) hasn’t been terribly bad.

      (Quote)

  53. Of course, England have defeated Germany (Hitler), France (Napoleon) and Spain (the Armada) in wars but we are not as good as them at football at the minute.

      (Quote)

  54. Kim@48 – so what’s your theory about the acute drop off in performance yesterday? I’m at a loss.

      (Quote)

  55. Georgio, Not a clue to be honest mate, the only consistency with the Toon is our inconsistency . 🙄

      (Quote)

  56. One thing though, it’s been said before they tend to raise their game for the bigger teams and think they only have to turn up for lesser ones.

      (Quote)

  57. Full marks to Garde having the guts in his first match to make six changes. Steve needs to do a bit of that with our so called top players. Players like Sissoko need a wake up call. Nobody should have an automatic right to be on our team sheet. Wish we had got Garde.

      (Quote)

  58. BB if you are about – we are facing off in the fantasy H2H league. Level on points more or less heading into the Arsenal Spurs game. You have backed Arsenal in your line up and I have backed Spurs. Should make an interesting couple of hours!

      (Quote)

  59. ERIC SYKES
only a fool would put a bet on with some1 sat half way round the world i aint no fool are u bud 😯

      (Quote)

  60. It’s the quality to finish the chances that makes the difference. i.e Geni and Ayoze. Blackpool tried to bring their attacking gung ho football to the Premier League and now they’re just in the history books. Same thing will happen to Bournemouth and Howe in my opinion. They will get picked off at this level, as has happened in the last five games.

      (Quote)

  61. Eric – On the flight down to Bournemouth I was opposite your mate Carver and on the way back I was near you’re other mate Lee Ryder. What message would you have wanted me to give them?
