Tried & Trusted Vs Exotic Unknown

Would the Toon world be better British?
Would the Toon world be better British?
Newcastle United has had a lot of hits and misses in the transfer market world. Some fans blame our lack of tried and trusted locally developed players for our current and recent relegation fights, however some of out most reliable and productive players down the years have been foreigners. So what looks better on paper?

Below you will find two teams with one thing in common; They are comprised of current or ex-Newcastle United players. One is formed with British and Irish players and the other is a collection of players from across the rest of the Globe. For these teams I have set two selection criteria;

1) Any selected player has to have been a full international at some point during their career.
2 Any selected player has to have appeared for Newcastle United in the last 30 years. (1986 onward).

The team selections are entirely subjective and based on contribution to NUFC, at what stage in their career they played for the Magpies and just personal preference. For example Patrick Kluivert does not make the line up despite being a huge global star – because he played for us so late in his career. The reason for the 30-year rule is because it was so rare for teams to buy foreigners before then.

So for the United Kingdom and Rest of the World I’ve gone for 4-3-3;

First team:Shay Given (GK), Warren Barton (RB), Jonathan Woodgate (CB), Steve Howey (CB), Barry Venison (LB), David Batty (DM), Gary Speed (CM), Paul Gascoigne (AM), Peter Beardsley (STR), Alan Shearer (STR), Craig Bellamy (STR).

Subs: Martin Thomas (GK), Stephen Carr (RB), Aaron Hughes (CB), Rob Lee (CM), David McCreary (MF), Keith Gillespie (RW), Les Ferdinand(STR).

Honorable mentions to John Anderson, Andy O’Brien, Liam O’Brien, Michael Owen, Duncan Ferguson (a favourite of mine), Sol Campbell, Kieron Dyer, Jermaine Jenas.

It was a close call between Hughes and Howey for me. Howey was a great servant to the club but not really an established international. Hughes was versatile and underrated in my opinion but overall Howey contributed more to us. Rob Lee just fell short because with that attacking line-up the midfield needed a general – and there were few better than David Batty. Up front Sir Les lost out to Bellamy because I genuinely believe Bellamy was the better player in his prime and Ferdinand contribute more to Spurs than us.

The Rest of the World has a 4-4-2 formation;

First Team: Pavel Srnicek (GK, Cze), Jonas Gutierrez (LB, Arg), Nikos Dabizas (CB, Gre), Phillipe Albert (CB, Bel), Habib Beye (RB, Sen), Laurent Robert (LW, Fra), Hatem Ben Arfa (AM, Fra), Johan Cabaye (CM, Fra), Nolberto Solano (RW, Per), Loic Remy (STR, Fra), Faustino Asprilla (STR, Col).

Subs: Tim Krul (GK), Fabricio Coloccini (CB), Mathieu Debuchy (RB), David Ginola (LW), Cheick Tiote (CM), Georgino Wijnaldum (AM), Obafemi Martins (STR).

Honorable mentions to: Shaka Hislop (I know he was raised locally), Bjorn Kristensen, Charles Nzogbia, Temuri Ketsbaia, Hugo Viana, Luis Saha, Patrick Kluivert, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Dietmar Hamann.

Some controversial choices you might argue, but Gutierrez could play at left back and down the years we have had very slim pickings in terms of international talent in that position. Olivier Bernard was a personal favorite of mine, but he never won a cap for his Country. Dabizas was underrated and reliable and whilst Coloccini has occasionally oozed class, I believe overall the Greek was the better contributor to our cause. Colo might just be the worst Captain the club has ever had.

Beye was similar to Debuchy in that he could get forward but he pips the Frenchman because he did not treat us as a stepping stone. I honestly don’t think there was a lot of difference between the two in their prime. Robert beats Ginola due to his contribution. He played a lot more and scored a lot more for us. Again, Ginola was more a Spurs contributor than ours. Hamann was a better player than Tiote, but did not feature for us for long. We have not had a wealth of foreign talent in the middle of the park unfortunately. The same can be said up front. Occasional flashes but no long term, stable contributors. Martins shades Cisse to the bench. They both chipped in for us but Martins had excellent celebrations!

No doubt I have forgotten some very good players but hey ho.

  1. Gash – which I could live with if they were getting rid of the ****. I’m not saying Tiote or Cisse are our best players, but there are poorer players in our squad to get rid of first I reckon.

  2. So could I but in our situation we just need to buy and sell later. what happens if we cant sell? no buys?

I’m quietly confident we’ll get a midfielder and a striker. SM will save the day!! 😉

Stop your flapping troy! bumping your gums regarding Venners and Clarky.. get a f**king grip man.. 😛

how was Edinburgh Troy? did you go buy email? it was quick..

  3. Back to football. Back to reality. Away from Troysta non-issues.

I read a couple of reports on the Man U game and by all accounts they were very lucky yesterday. I have also watched a few of their games and they have been terrible. If ever there was a time to play Man U it is now. A 3-0 loss it is then 🙂

  4. On a scale of 1 to 10, the chances of Lee Clark being the next NUFC manager are minus infinity. Only Troy would even think it possible.

  5. I’ll be there Eric. Got a ticket off an old mate for the platinum.. I have a feeling we’ll win 😯

  6. Shamrock: sorry to clog the blog with Troy stuff but it has to be pointed out how nonsensical he is sometimes.

  7. Mark: I am going to the Pub to watch it at 2 in the afternoon. Since it is a workday there will probably only be a couple of other NUFC fans there. Luckily the Man U fans have another pub they go to because I don’t want to listen to their blather.

I saw them play Bayern in a pre-season a few years ago in Chicago. They had just won the league and about half their fans had the green and gold scarves on wanting the Glazers out. They don’t know they are born that lot of glory hunters.

  9. The trouble is, I have vision and the victims dont. If you don’t get with text victims agendas they get angry and abusive. It’s a funny old game but I’ve noticed this to be the case. Victims. YKWYA 😉

  10. Psychs
I’ve named a manager that I believe is a realistic swap for McLaren. Wold love to come, would be cheap, has experience.
Can you name a realistic one?
    I won’t hold my breath. 😉

  11. I think a lot of fans can now see that Pardew did do a good job in the circumstances but even he went close in the relegation stakes.
He left in the end because he just couldn’t support it anymore and was first to realize Graham Carr is a load of sh**e !

I think even if Pardew stayed he would have eventually overseen a relegation.
It doesn’t matter who you get in at Newcastle they will have to carry the can for
    Batty man’s fatha’s **** players.
It’s Fatshley’s ridiculous blue print and sweat shop operation which is killing the club !

  13. “Debating” with Troy is like having a fight with a hamster, so there is no need for anger or abuse. Bring in Lee Clark as a short term fix. Now that is true vision. Well, nobody else would have seen that as the solution 🙂

  14. who’s the victims? Does anyone know what Troy is on aboot? 😆

I bet I’m a victim now for writing this..

  15. Yes Troy I can name several:

Klinsmann because the US national team do not have the players to achieve his ambition.

    Moyes
    Favre
    Monk
    Bielsa

  16. Troy says @314:

    “Psychs
I’ve named a manager that I believe is a realistic swap for McLaren. Wold love to come, would be cheap, has experience.”

Has experience of losing and relegation. So that should come in handy.

  17. And to say my managerial targets wouldn’t come because of the current set-up misses the point because if there is one constant on here it is that the current set up is not working and needs to be changed.

  18. The club have even half admitted it by appointing Schteve to the Board although how much say he has I don’t know.

      (Quote)

  19. Just read on Skysports news that City want rid of Bony and going to offer him back to the Swans… He could do a job for us if the price is right. Do you think city would accept 2 months supply of Mrs. Miggins pies for him?

      (Quote)

  20. Watching the Spurs v Leicester game at the moment – 2 really good footballing sides. Both have made numerous changes but neither look weakened.
But Fazio still isn’t getting a game for Spurs & isn’t even on the bench. I reckon he would be a good option for us at CB.

      (Quote)

  21. Ha ha Sharpy, I would too but he may need to fork out a full years supply of pies for Aguero and that might just be too much for the fat man to pay.
Im also watching the Spurs game. Very good game so far. That Demerai Grey looks a canny buy!. 😯

      (Quote)

  22. Dubai – yeah he’s a young lad making his debut and looks full of confidence – £3.75m on a buy out clause. Good business from Leicester there.
Their big CB that scored looks more like he should be in Game of Thrones though 😆

  23. Napoli are top of Serie A and we are 3rd bottom of the PL. There are stories in the papers that we have bid for 2 of their players. Is this a joke?

  24. What a good game of football that Spurs v Leicester game was!!. Great advert for the FA Cup & PL football.

  25. Eric – Leicester were robbed with that one mate. Don’t rate him as a ref at all. No way was that a pen for me like.

  26. Well done to Bmouth as well. Signed Benik Afobe for £12m today. The kid looks like he can score goals, and Bmouth show that deals can be done in a short period of time IF you don’t **** about.
Puts our lot to fucking shame that’s for sure!!!.

  27. Gashley
    Of course you’re a victim.
As soon as I remind you, Psychs and others of theit wish to rid us of Pardew despite my protestations you crawl up in a a ball and play the victim 😀
I love watching it happen before my eyes. 😀
It waS ok for you and others to repeatedly remind me how foolish I was when defending when he was here. That was ok then. But now, itS a scramble for the tissues if I mention it. 😀 victim 😀

      (Quote)

  28. Moyes, Klinsmann ? 😀
    YCMIU 😀
And I asked for a realistic replacement. ;-D
You’ve excelled Psychs woo hoo hoo 😀

      (Quote)

  29. Psychs
Lee Clark is far more realistic to fit into Ashleys remit than Klinsmann. Believe me. 😉
    YCMIU

      (Quote)

  30. I also explained why Klinsmann might consider the job. Because the US National team do not have the players to be successful. Their 3 best players are retired or old – Dempsey, Donovan and Howard. The problem would be getting him away from Southern California.

Moyes might take it if given more control and Charnley might just give up some control if we are in the bottom 3 in February. Questionable, but he might do it to save his job. Remember Fat Man has sacked quite a few of his friends before so nobody is really safe.

      (Quote)

  31. Troy: just give up. You are arguing a case where there is no case. Lee Clark has no chance of being hired by NUFC. What is the next name you are going to pull out of your ****?

Pearson is also available and has connections to NUFC. Would be a much better option than Clark.

      (Quote)

  32. lol Troy, honestly mate, I havent the foggiest what youre on about.

I’m certainly not a victim and cant remember curling up into a ball.. 😕 has someone hit a nerve with you? you seem very sensitive of late. was it because nobody supports your choice in managers?

But obviously you see things that others dont.. 😀 like Big Ron or Hoddle saving us 😆

I’m glad your bumboy has gone. he was full of ****. constantly making lies up to protect his job. He was part of the problem… I’d rather be **** in the short term then suffer long term with the likes of Pardew. Plus youre making out he was like Fergy.. his record was very poor at times

      (Quote)

  33. Psychs
I know you explained. That doesn’t male it any more realistic. Nothing is going to change with Ashleys remit therefore your suggestions are totally unrealistic.
    FTSOTB Klinsmann 😀

  35. Troy: I don’t think you scared AMF off, I think he might have got sick of explaining everything to you 1000 times and it still not sinking in 🙂 I shouldn’t speak for him but that’s my guess.

      (Quote)

  36. Troy – you may have cleared this up previous, but didn’t you say if we got beat off Leicester, that it was time for Pardew to go?

      (Quote)

  37. We know about your guesses Psychs. Your guessing Ashley might consider appointing Klinsmann 😆
Is this a wind up 😀 Klinsmann
    FTSOTB
Aussie couldn’t take criticism. I’m just suggesting Gashley is turning like him. 😉

      (Quote)

  38. Let’s just accept for a second that my suggestions are unrealistic. That still doesn’t explain why someone else would suggest as serial managerial failure to replace another serial managerial failure. You may as well suggest Ant and Dec as they have ties to The Toon as well.

      (Quote)

  39. Sharpy
Don’t bring Pardew up!!!!!! The victims go mad. 😀
I mentioned him once but think I got away with it. 😉

      (Quote)

  40. @Troy. you havent criticised me though ?

are you referring to my view on SM to stay unless we find a better manager?

can’t remember you criticising me, just doing my head in with the same questions over and over again. 😀 . thats fine though, I sometimes think you have alzheimer’s so I get on with it..

      (Quote)

  41. I think they will have to bolt a whole new railway carriage to the reality train to put Troy on until he talks some sense.

      (Quote)

  42. Psychs
I can’t accept your suggestion to appoint Klinsmann for a second. I can’t get it out of my mind. 😀 hilarious.
Lee Clarks record at Birmingham and Blackpool should not even be taken into account. He was a young manager at Huddersfield and had them playing attractive football. He didn’t get them promoted but he was popular with the fans.
He couldn’t do any worse than McLaren imo

      (Quote)

  43. Troy: I am suggesting managers that have proven themselves to be better than McClaren. It is up to Ashley and his minions to change tack and get them given their total failure so far. You are suggesting someone who has failed in every managerial job, whatever the excuses are.

Clark would actually have to do a good job somewhere before I would even consider him. I showed you his record and doing OK at Huddersfield and then being sacked is hardly a ringing endorsement.

      (Quote)

  44. Troy: I think you have finally lost what few marbles you had. It was not enough to make the same point for 2 years over, and over, and over again but now you are defending a ridiculous opinion.

      (Quote)

  45. Who was managing Birmingham and Blackpool then when one was 1 point from the relegation zone and the other was relegated? Lee Clarks, older and dumber brother? Father Christmas? The Tooth Fairy?

      (Quote)

  46. Eric – I’m not sure Troy has lost his marbles mate. You have at least twice said that Troy is fishing or is on the wind up – Mark I think called him a WUM within the last 24hrs as well. Yet you are both still arguing your points with him 😆

      (Quote)

  47. Psychs
If you believe Klinsmann would be considered by our club as a realistic choice then I will formally announce youre neurologically a dud. 😉
    Klinsmann 😀

      (Quote)

  48. Troy – I must have pretty good vision too mate, coz I can see what you’re up to a mile off 😆 with pretty good success too I might add

      (Quote)

  49. Sharpy: it was Shamrock who called Troy a WUM after Troy did his usual attention seeking insult. I am still not sure if Troy is on a wind up because I think he might be deranged enough to suggest that Clark would get the job.

      (Quote)

  50. Sharpie called Troy out on wanting Pardew sacked and Troy avoided the question. Hilarious.

Eric stop biting he’s full of a%%t. Can’t even hold a civil relationship with his own brother on a blog so how’s anyone here got any chance?! 😆

Troy any more victim nonsense after you being well and truly found out and you’ll find yourself spitting words onto this forum you have always wanted to say, but never had the guts to 😉

      (Quote)

  51. Sharpy: why would Troy waste his time on a 5 hour wind up? I know he has better things to do, he said he was off to Edinburgh. If this is some elaborate wind up then I feel even more sorry for him than I do for him suggesting Lee Clark in the first place.

      (Quote)

  52. @Sharpy. So are you saying Troy is on a wind-up with sign Clarky idea?

I think youre letting him off too easy there mate.

      (Quote)

  53. Shamrock: I just don’t see the point of a wind-up. I can’t get my head around somebody wasting so much time on it.

      (Quote)

  54. Eric – it’s Troy!! of course he’d go on a 5hr wind up – as long as he’s getting the bites, yeah I reckon he would.
But say you’re right. Say it’s not a wind up. You are then trying to reason with or debate your point with someone who you think is bat **** crazy 😆

      (Quote)

  55. @Eric. troy isnt winding you up. this is him in all his glory 😆

If he is winding you up, its a **** wind-up lol

Aussie use to own Troy 90% of the time. I remember Troy stamping his feet and running off in a huff to .com only to write Toonsy a begging letter of forgiveness hahah that was epic..
