  1. Slightly off topic, but I must say that the treat towards Steve Harper is an absolute disgrace!!!.

      (Quote)

  2. Sharpy – agreed, absolutely disgusting from some of our fans. I’d expect it of Mackems like but the amount of abuse he’s got from the toon actually surprised me. He probably won’t even play for them, and if he did, maybe he’s aiming to be our agent on the inside to throw the derby and take them down 😆

      (Quote)

  3. Yes, bit of a shock him turning up there but so what. He was a great servant to us and he has to make a living and he wanted to stay in the area, plus he knows Sam. Look at the way he went over to see Pavs family, he’s a decent guy and the abuse is not called for.

      (Quote)

  4. Didn’t know he was getting abuse. Their will always be a few but it’s safe to say he has the backing of the vast majority of the Toon Army.

Toby, what left back are you on about?

      (Quote)

  5. Wow what a rambling piece of rubbish that article is. It jumps from topic to topic and the connections he tries to make are awful. The generalisations he levels at Toon fans is also shocking. What a short sighted, poor piece of writing.

      (Quote)

  6. He will have got about 20 so called supporters and most likely kids slagging him off on Twitter. Big deal – man up Steve.

      (Quote)

  7. Shamrock – aye, apparently he deleted his twitter account because he had it that much. He is probably one of if not the nicest guys in football, no doubt he expected some stick but I guess you forget how abusive and brave people can get behind a keyboard.

      (Quote)

  8. Jesus that article though….No shock there though, media using anything to blanket us all rather than a slim minority. **** the daily mail seriously.

      (Quote)

  9. Stu:
Man up? The only quote I’ve seen from him has praised the support he’s had from majority of ‘die-hard Newcastle fans’ and he deleted his Twitter account before signing so he wouldn’t receive any abuse.
I think he’s handled himself and the situation with the dignity I’d expect of him, which is the best example of ‘manning up’ in my opinion.

      (Quote)

  10. Harper said he deleted his Twitter before the move was announced because he expected a fair few stupid comments.

      (Quote)

  11. That’s why they call it the Daily Malicious. Idiots who couldn’t write an impartial piece if their lives depended on it.

      (Quote)

  12. Regardless of what others think, I personally think it’s a reasonable price to pay for him. Reckon he’s a good player.

      (Quote)

  13. So do I Stu. Just think it’s not a priority position, but would be give us extra width and improve the squad? Yes he would.

Now we need a good striker and defender then McC has nowhere to hide and has to start getting results.

      (Quote)

  14. He’s an England international with PL experience and he is still cheaper than Thauvin so in my opinion he’s good value.

      (Quote)

  15. Toby – you mentioned a new left back. Who was it? Guerrero?

I really hope this bollocks about Townsend just goes away. He’s poor. If we want a winger go and get Hatem back.

      (Quote)

  16. But it’s still a striker we need. We have struggled in the past to get them “over the line” so lets see…

      (Quote)

  17. I would back Townsend to be less of a complete Bell End in the dressing room than HBA and also perform more than 1 in 7 games.

      (Quote)

  18. Townsend also said: “Two of the biggest positions you can play in football are centre-forward or winger. I could not turn that down”

    Our new striker?

      (Quote)

  19. Yeah, it’s probably about the going rate, still not too fussed on him but beggers can’t be choosers!

Stu – I would not have him anywhere near centre forward though, behind the striker at most. I guess we would be tasty on the break if we had him behind Perez with Sissoko and Gini all rushing on…

      (Quote)

  20. I’ll give Townsend a chance once he pulls on the shirt but he would have been about number 37 I’d want at the club.
Stuart – you buying the bell end stories from Pardew. 10 goals and 3 assists this season. Instead we’re paying £12m for someone who hasn’t been even picked for 2 years.

      (Quote)

  21. Wow, a great fit for the club..a player with a large expectation placed upon him which will ultimately end in disappointment because the player is actually not good enough….been there, seen it, bought the feckin tee shirt! … next… 😕

      (Quote)

  22. Georgio you and I could perform well in Ligue 1! When your team mates don’t want you anywhere near the team then he has a problem.

      (Quote)

  23. Aussie – In reality the only thing that matters is whether he’s better than what we have in his position. The answer to that is undoubtedly yes – so what is wrong with him on that basis?

      (Quote)

  24. To be honest I think if we do get Townsend there will be a few bloggers on here will soon change their minds on him. I think he will a success

      (Quote)

  25. On what foundation is the “undoubtedly yes” answer based on… the guy has barely played in the last few years.. you cannot say he is better than what we have as you have not seen him play…

      (Quote)

  26. Wow that’s a stretch… 😆
Thauvin isn’t getting game time so is Townsend going to replace him on the bench!

      (Quote)

  27. £12m is an awful lot. Stu@629 – I might but I doubt you’re up to it! Colo/ Tiote/Pardew/Carver fell out with HBA. I know who I’d have kept at the club

      (Quote)

  28. There’s a pretty good reason why he’s not getting game time! Or would you rather have Gini playing there instead of no 10?

      (Quote)

  29. There are no reasons Stuart, there are excuses… let me guess, its everyone else’s fault that he is not getting game time… typical of modern society nowadays…

      (Quote)

  30. He hasn’t played well enough. In fact he has offered nothing at all when he has played. It is clear he needs time to adjust to the league but we don’t have that time I am afraid.

unless you think he’s played well and should be in the team?

      (Quote)

  31. Well the way I look at the signing if it happens is weather you like the signing or not it’s another player in the pool and the PL is all about being able to rotate players squad size is all important to cover injurys. etc ect we are now imo well covered in midfield just wish I could say the same for the defence and striker dept, find it strange fans twisting about players coming in,it’s about shifting the ***** out we have in squad

      (Quote)

  32. You can’t compare a players stats in league 1 to the PL. Let’s not forget Benny also fell out with Hull, where he should have been a stand out star. Bad attitude.

I say welcome to Townsend and I wish him well. Now lets get a bloody striker and defender!

      (Quote)

  33. Well said Ice. Far too much dead wood in the squad that should have been shifted a long time ago.

No, Aussie – we’re talking about Thauvin not getting game time. It was you who mentioned it – so you need to keep up… Looks like too much low alcohol beer on Australia day… 😆

      (Quote)

  35. Sham I think the problem the club have had in getting rid of the dead wood is that they are too dead for the clubs that could pay the wages the dead wood would want.
As for people arguing about the prices being paid or asked to pay , I cant understand why the fans worry so much about us paying too much, as I have always said Jabba has accountants to look after his money so we the fans dont need to worry about it.
I just hope and pray we get a striker in as we need goals to win games

      (Quote)

  36. We cannot blame jabba to much at least for the last six as he has spent money imo Penfold and Carr ( past it) have made a bloody mess of it with poor signings and appointments, the club has imo always lacked a football man in the club

      (Quote)

  37. The question is, where has this money come from? Ashley must be putting his own money in as we certainly didn’t have nearly £100m in the bank did we?

      (Quote)

  38. We should have shifted them on frees in the summer. Somebody would have taken them, even if we had to pay a percentage of wages. At least it would have freed up wages and squad places for better players to come in. If they did that, we would not be in a relegation fight and a short term loss would be a long term investment.

      (Quote)

  39. He’s better than what we have in that position, but is he good enough to get in a talented first 11, particularly the front 4/5? Gini and Sissoko have to play, and I would definitely be playing Perez. So does this make him at the expense of Mitrovic?

I don’t see Schteve dropping a Colback or Saviet in order to accomodate him, so it’s either Mitro or Perez.

      (Quote)

  40. He also has something to prove, Newkie which makes a pretty big difference I think. He will also want to get to the Euros like Shelvey – another big plus. But most of all, he knows what the PL is all about which means he doesn’t need any settling in period.

      (Quote)

  41. Perez should not be dropped imo he’s the only one likely to score plus don’t upset the kid to much or he will be off, there’s plenty who would snap him up

      (Quote)

  42. Ice @ 646 but who was it that had the bright /cheap idea of promoting the club secretary with no idea about footie to chairman ? 😉 for me there is only one man to blame for that.

      (Quote)

  43. Newkie, I said that last night, I think he’ll drop Perez not Mitro. He’ll be hoping Townsend can supply Mitro better. I know you don’t agree but I still think Perez is carrying an injury or just spent as he has been nowhere near as mobile as previously imo. I’m sure that’s why he’s been used sparingly.

      (Quote)

  44. I think Perez looked jaded against West Ham – Even though he scored he offered very little in the 2nd half and looked f*cked! Also to be fair, he’s not exactly a prolific goalscorer either. Although he is very skillfull.

      (Quote)

  45. DAVE let’s not forget jabba knows sweet fanny Adams about football and he trusts very few if Penfold talks the talk he might have fell for it as with smoking joe and the poisoned dwarf sucked him in my point is now he has opened his wallet he has dummys in place to stuff it up

      (Quote)

  46. Stu, Don’t know if it’s too much game time and expectation caught up with the lad or whether he’s carrying an injury but imo he’s defo not fully fit at the moment.

      (Quote)

  47. KIM. yes I thought Perez was not the live wire he was I thought it was just me that thought that there is one or two not right even Elloit is not as agile as he was but we know he’s carrying a thigh strain

      (Quote)

  48. Stuart – true, he actually seems to enjoy playing for England so maybe that will have an impact.

Kim – I agree, I think he will drop Perez. And you’re right again, I don’t agree at all with that decision. Perez has a huge amount of talent and I’ve heard nothing about him being injured – if he is then Schteve needs to get it sorted, as if it is bad enough to affect him it is worthing sorting out. I don’t actually think he is injured, or if he is, playing that badly – most of our players aren’t at their best, which is something he also needs to work on.

For my money, Perez is demotivated at outperforming Mitro or Siem De Jong and still being on the bench regularly. He’s going to be even more in the huff if Townsend replaces him.

      (Quote)

  49. Think Perez could do with a consistent run of starts myself.
If we are playing a 3-5-2 then there’s no need to drop either Mitro or Perez to accommodate Townsend, as he can play the left wing back position and leave Perez up top with Mitro.
One of the things I’ve noticed Spurs fans saying as a positive of AT’s play is his willingness and ability in tracking back when needed. That’s probably not lost on Macca and what might make him be viewed as an ideal player for the system he’s trying to instill.
If the unbelievable happens and we also buy a striker, then that leaves us options for rotating the front 2 as games dictate. 4 options in fact in it’s true Cisse is due back for West Brom next week.

      (Quote)

  50. I know how we can save our season!!! Let’s sign andros Townsend. He hasn’t played a single game this season so he must be good!! Hope I end up eating my words but Townsend and saivet seem like weak signings for a club in need of survival. I just don’t understand the goings on in football sometimes…I quite like ramires (the chelski one on his way to China) and I reckon could have been a help with his experience and yet we probably didn’t even raise an eyebrow when he was made available.
Whatever, I’m no football manager (only in virtualland) so I won’t try and understand. Only hope that I’m not stuck watching fizzy pop league football next season.

      (Quote)

  51. YouYew- would you trust townsend at left wing back though? Brave, he might be stronger and work harder than Rolando but I certainly wouldn’t fancy it. Doesn’t give poor Colo enough protection 😆

Petey – We’re also surprised by the amount of money Ashley is throwing around, but 25 million on Ramires would never have been on the cards pal!

      (Quote)

  52. Yea your not wrong Newkie…

Main point though I fear its both too little too late. Even if we end up signing a mystery striker. With Colo at the back we will still lose at least every other game

      (Quote)

  53. I don’t know, I feel the cost was inflated cus chelsea knew they would pay it. But in saying that his wages would be sky high as well no doubt.

I’m not sure it was a good example but I still dream of the day we sign someone and I think “whoa, that’s a quality signing”….haven’t had that feeling in a while. Although last time that ended up being Michael Owen, so that shows what I know ?

      (Quote)

  54. I am very interested in the fact that we have spent circa £77m since the summer and we don’t have a squad capable of being out of the bottom 3 according to some on the blog. Is that not a worry?

How much more money do we have available? If the other clubs strengthen next season (providing we stay up) are we going to be in the same position this time next season, as I am assuming there won’t be too much money left in the kitty.

      (Quote)

  55. £27m of that has only played 2 games Stuart and another £10m was wasted on Thauvin. It’ll be 2017 before we have a team that gels.

Still don’t have a good feeling about Townsend.

      (Quote)

  56. STUART don’t worry about the money spent mate,we know jabba will sell some of our better players in the summer for big money and the the roundabout starts again with no thoughts about improving the club to top six/eight club we have been here before

      (Quote)

  57. Stu you can’t include the Townsend, Shelvey and Saivet purchases in the amount spent this season so far and use it to criticise McC. Townsend is not here get whikstvthe other two have only just arrived!

In reality up until last week Schteve had 50m spent on the squad, which he has had 6 months to work with. From that, Mitro has not been the prolific goalscorer we had hoped for and Thauvin has been as good as a complete waste of dosh. So on reflection the squad was only really improved with £20m worth of signings in Gini and Mbemba.

Meanwhile, let’s not forget 2 things:

    1) Teams around us improved their squads in the off season too.

    2) Dont read too much too much I to how much dosh is spent on players. It’s about having the right player in the right position, regardless of cost.

Perez cost nowt and is class. Thauvin cost £14m and is gash.

Finally, the summer signings were not Scteves. The general understanding is these winter signings are his. If we get a striker and maybe a defender, then he has nowhere to hide and at that stage we can justify laying complete blame at his door and accepting the board has actually listened and delivered for a change.

Until then, although Scteve is not my choice, we would do well to remember he is 6 months into a job managing a squad of players that are not his and he has loads of dead wood with a losing mentality to shift. That’s not a quick fix.

Up until these winter signings, the consensus was our squad was still a bottom 5 team. Now that Shelvey and Townsend are coming in and if we get a class striker, the consensus will be that we should avoid relegation easily. Fingers crossed.

  58. loving watching ash splashing his cash in a desperate attempt to stay in the premier so he can get has fat little fingers on the mega millions next season.

nothing for the sake of the fans or wanting the club to win something going on here.
