Duo Ruled Out For Key Clash

Friday brought confirmation that Newcastle will be without defensive duo Daryl Janmaat and club Captain Fabricio Coloccini for the visit of Swansea on Saturday afternoon. It means that Benitez’s options in defence are limited and once again he will have to cobble together a make-shift back four for a crucial Premiership fixture. United’s failure to sign defensive cover during the January window has left them painfully short as horrendous injury problems have once again crippled the Newcastle squad.

Coloccini has been out since before Benitez arrived at the club and suffered a setback this week to remain side-lined with a calf injury. This means that Mbemba will more than likely partner Lascelles at centre half as Steven Taylor is also ruled out, although his form would have seen him benched anyway.

Benitez does have some decisions to make at full back though. Paul Dummett should start at left back if fit enough although Jack Colback’s return to the squad could see him play in that role. Kevin Mbabu’s return to the squad could see him replace Janmaat at right back but Vernon Anita is more likely to start as Mbabu is still short of match sharpness.

The most intriguing aspect of the game lies in midfield as Jonjo Shelvey lines up against his former club as captain of his current one. It would have been nice for Colo to have played to take the burden of captaincy away from Shelvey who has struggled for form since wearing the armband. But the added responsibility for Shelvey against Swansea could go in Newcastle’s favour as he will have a duty to keep his composure in a fixture filled with emotion. Jack Cork has tried to wind Shelvey up on social media and Swansea will probably try to antagonise the Newcastle captain further throughout the game. Newcastle need Shelvey to handle the situation and have the game of his life. What a story it would be if Shelvey could open his account at Newcastle by scoring the winner against Swansea. He will have dreamt it that way, although I’m sure he’ll settle for the three points, no matter how they come.

  1. Goal difference getting a helping hand here too – 26 now, Scum still -18 though. BUT Norwich are -25

  2. Newks, he’s like a super sub, seems to have a bigger impact when coming on as sub, his brute strength against tiring defenders.

  3. Don’t know what all the fuss was about…

    My prediction still on course!

Thanks Sunderland for helping us out!

Kim I agree he seems to be hungrier and has more impact when he comes on

  5. What a shame we face City and Pool next, could easily kill todays momentum if we get stuffed.

  6. Big Dave: Kim I agree he seems to be hungrier and has more impact when he comes on

    Definitely.
Against stronger apposition I’d start him and try and nick a goal early doors

  7. That’s a bit more like it! Dig in and see what it gets you. What a good set of results (as long as Sunderland don’t win another game).

    Hope again springs eternal.

  8. Well we needed that. Great result. Now we need to stick one on City… Nervous as hell all match though. Thought all our defenders did well. MoM either Lacelles or Townsend for me

  9. 2 – Rafa Benitez became the 2nd Premier League manager to win on his birthday on two occasions, along with Arsene Wenger. Candles.

    😆 😆

  10. Absolutely enormous win. Real effort in there. Anita’s work in the first half against Montero was crucial. Townsend played well. Tiote worked hard. A lot of good performances.

  11. Got a long flight to China tonight so at least I can relax on the flight but I’ll probably miss the City game due to time difference 😕

Lascelles for me, had a very good game and scored too.#gold star

  13. It worked out so well. Tiote and Anita brought stability and even Colback chipped in. That first goal was huge. Lascelles has good instincts around goal. Good to see us score from set pieces for a change. That never happened with Pardew.

  14. Need to keep the pressure up. We were battered v saints and swans looked poor.

City will be tough, so too Pool.

Palace will offer more than Swansea, especially up front

  15. Anyone not mentioning how we actually glad that LB issue is temporarily resolved with Paul Dummett back?

Previously we are raped by team down that side. Anita does job better at RB than LB…

  17. Like I said, this win could well be the catalyst for a revival. Beat City on Tuesday and we’re in our way although I wouldn’t be too disappointed with a point because I think we can get six more points against Palace and Villa. That would give us 35 points. Enough?

Or we could just win our next 3 games and then we’ll be pretty safe I though. 😳

  18. Although I’ve seen that Sunderland play Everton and Watford last two games of the season… If they’re both in the FA cup final they’ll play weakened sides and that won’t be good!

yep, and you can bet that’s the way it’ll pan out the way our season has gone.

  20. So we want a City win against Chelsea don’t we? Don’t want them coming to SJP desperately needing to win to keep 4th spot.

I’m also wondering, if they have a game on Tuesday also will they rest Aguero and a few others with the game following so soon after?

      (Quote)

  21. Well.done lads. Glad to see a good result. Tough fixtures coming up. Fingers crossed we dig in and steal a point or fwo ready for Villa etc.

      (Quote)

  22. I know Kim it’s a complete joke!!! When we were due to play them they’re were getting beat left, right and centre! Just hope they don’t come here on Tuesday with this performance otherwise our goal difference might go backwards….Alrhough they’ve only won 7 all season away. 🙄

      (Quote)

  23. At one point leading 1-0, we nearly bottled it, sat back too deap at let swansea dictate play..probably nerves.

Back four, minus Taylor were great.
Townsend was the pick of the team. start strongly v City we might have a chance but I’d take a draw now

      (Quote)

  24. Lascelles turning into a leader for us. Think he was captain of Forest and easy to see why.

      (Quote)

  25. Contrary to what many think on here I thought Cisse had a good game. His work rate was good. I am still not impressed with Sissoko in spite of him scoring. Is that his first goal of the season? I would agree with the sentiments that Anita was better at RB than Janmaat as he stays close to his man Townsend maybe shaved it for MOM but it was a good team effort with several good performances. Two goals from corners. How many did we get from corners under Pardew?

      (Quote)

  26. Wasn’t surprised Anita did well at RB, he’s played there before for us and always done well. Dare I say he stuck to his task better than Janmaat. I would stick with Anita at RB, Janmaat isn’t sticking around after the season ends anyhow if reports are true./

      (Quote)

  27. Kim – Anita defended better than Janmaat has all season!

I reckon we can expect more changes for Tuesday. Rafa picks the players depending on who we are playing not on past performances or results. I like that.

      (Quote)

  28. I laugh at this situation. Lascelles is overlooked by McClaren. He gets the odd game or sub appearance but on the whole is rejected. Rafa then comes in and he is still overlooked even when he impresses on his odd appearance.

He then, as a 21 year old new to the team and league, publicly rips the squad in a recorded interview as being ******* and then plays well and scores next game.

He threw down a punk card on everyone and got a response. The sort of thing Nolan and Barton used to do without the scouse accents and cigars in the eye.

  29. I’ve seen it all now. Sports Direct advertising hitting a all time low! Signs in Chinese going round the ground! 🙁

  30. I still remember the experts after York City in preseason, (I was at that game in the home end as couldn’t get a ticket for sold out away end). ‘Lascelles will never be good enough for premier league’. After his first appearance in preseason he was written off by some, and don’t deny it now, you know who you were. Perhaps because I saw him mainly in the second half, I had a different opinion. But anyway, bwahaha you were wrong! I said it at the time. I say it again now, the kid is strong in the air, reasonably quick and is now showing it in big games after criminally being dropped for useless hasbeen Taylor. Don’t want to gloat but I was right again. 😯

      (Quote)

  31. First of all he tells his teammates to get there arses in gear. Then he scores a header to get us on the way to victory. Yep he is definitely not good enough a defender as Steven Taylor or Mike Williamson. Get rid!! Get Colo back now!! Taylor & Collo will keep us up! ( Relegation 08/09)

      (Quote)

  32. Let’s not hype Lascelles up too much boys n girls ? he had a good game today and will probably be a decent player but there wasn’t much threat today until Gomis came on.

I’ve seen Lascelles turned a few times but he’s got a bit of fight in his belly and showing his worth ATM but he hasn’t got much competition from others in our squad.

Let’s see how he does against City

      (Quote)

  33. Erm second goal this season from how many games?? How many has Taylor or £80k a week captain got?? Quit now while you are ahead lads. 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Like I said, the competition is fierce. Saylor or Lascelles ?

Not knocking the kid but one good display v Swansea doesn’t justify “I told you so’s” ?

      (Quote)

  35. One good game does not justify “I told you so”?

How many minutes combined did he get before being written off compared to Taylor and Colo, who seem immune to criticism from management?

No wonder players never want to stay here when their own “fans” are waiting for failure.

You’d never feel wanted at this club. Christ knows why Jonas likes the place so much.

      (Quote)

  36. There are a lot of people manically inclined to say ‘I told you so’. I think Troy started that particular trend with his chronic need to appear knowledgeable and to reinforce his self-worth (which is also the reason he wears that superhero outfit – still can’t believe he wore it at the pub!).

What a good football weekend it has been. From Brisbane’s wonderful 2 late goals on Friday to beat the Melbourne retards, to Norwich’s loss and Newcastle’s win. Pity Gateshead didn’t win, and no doubt my fantasy team will lose by one point again, but for now I’m enjoying the world again.

And summer is over. Geddin, man! The temperature has finally plummeted to the mid-20s. Can’t be happier. Even Anita looks good. And Sissoko.

the smart peeps know jonas dint love the club, most know why he wernt played, but he used his cancer to fill his bank account, had 1 decent game in the last 10 dont make him a blooming hero 😳 ,what about the 9 **** games he had 😆

  38. any1 with any brains will tell ya the only player to phone him and congratelate him on his court 1 was our gutless captain whos also filling his back account to the tune of 80k a week 💡

I predicted all this. I spoke to Grandma Baba Vanga who advised me of the turmoil ahead.
Fortunately she left her crystal ball to me when she died.
Rafa comes very close to saving us but defeats at Man City and Liverpool make the task too much of an ask.
The board left it it too late to sack McLaren. They dithered. Like many ditherers did on here.
Anyway, cometh the end of the season I can and will say, ” I told you so”.
If only you had listened. Mind, we must have looked funny sitting in the Star pub, me in my cape and trunks and you in your tutu and ballet shoes. 😀

steady on lad, thats a bit dramatic

so a couple of people on a blog ask whether he’s good enough after some poor displays and now all the fans are waiting for players to fail?

after 1 decent display v Swansea some the same fans are getting into a frenzy doing backflips telling the world he’s on the plane to the Euro’s 😆 … ne pressure than on Lascelles

every club is subject to the same audience. Some criticise quickly, some accept **** players for years without uttering a word… look at Shola 😀

  42. So Sissoko has said they tried really hard in training after the debacle at Southampton. He now believes we can do it….hope its not too late

For the wages players get a bit of determination and fire in their bellies should be the first thing they give back to the club and its fans

What a disgrace our club is adverts all over the place this is a family club what a load of ****,my son came from Malta with his wife a one month old child to go to the game we are in the Plat club, hold on says the club you not bought a ticket for that one month old child in arms cost 40pounds which I thought was a bit rough, then to be told if you bye the ticket we don’t have anywhere to change your child if it needs it,family club my ****,rip off swines

  44. It staggers me when players talk about trying in training as if it is something new. A new technique.
    WTF.
Why hasn’t sissoko been trying beforehand. That is the minimum you expect from a pro footballer earning £50k a week.
Fair play if the skill isn’t there but they try. Many toon players have won over a critical crowd by trying and showing they care even when their ability has not lived up to expectation.
I wish they would keep their gobs shut and simply try!
