Memory lane: Newcastle edge out Palace in final day thriller in 1995

As a bit of filler before the mayhem of ‘silly season’ takes place, we thought we’d look back at a few classic matches down at the Toon over the years.

Whilst Aston Villa have had the pleasure of relegating us a couple of times now as the seasons have wore on, 1995 was a year when we actually got to relegate a team!

On May 14th 1995, Palace travelled to St James’ Park knowing they needed all three points to stand any chance of staying up in the Premiership.

In a thrilling game on the final day of the 1994/1995 campaign, goals from Ruel Fox, Rob Lee and a cracker from Keith Gillespie put us into an early 3-0 lead.

Despite a late Palace comeback which saw the Eagles net two goals in the second half, it wasn’t enough to stop ‘Castle taking all three points and sending their opponents down to the old 1st Division.

FA Cup finalists Crystal Palace who are now sponsored by MansionCasino – a company who own casino.com are certainly a side on the up despite their 2-1 extra time defeat to United on Saturday. With the Magpies finishing 6th that season and narrowly missing out on European football, it just shows the direction in which both clubs have gone with Newcastle set to have dodgy pay day loan lender Wonga on their shirt for another season at least.

But the most ironic thing about this curious game was that our 3-2 victory helped a struggling Aston Villa side finish 18th in the table and thus avoid the drop zone (there was 22 teams in the Premiership back then).

The Midlands club were counting on a Newcastle win to help get them out of the mire that day and we duly delivered – shame they couldn’t do the same for us over ten years later!

Have a look at the highlights of this game below and should you wish to go into nostalgia mode and discuss some classic matches of years gone by, make some suggestions on the comments section below and we’ll happily feature them in the coming weeks.

  1. So far all I have seen that is factual is that the while squad has been given today off. There is a photo of Townsend on a plane – could be any plane but somebody reckons it’s Lisbon bound. No official word from anwhere to say he is in talks with Lisbon. He could be going on a plane anywhere for any reason. If he does go abroad, maybe it will be a permanent deal but probably on loan would be my guess. 😐

  2. Townsend to Lisbon??? – I don’t see that one personally.
Not after proving himself in the PL with us last season. All of the money is in the PL this season. He could get an Everton, Southampton, West Ham – even Liverpool maybe and his wages with any of those clubs would be double what he’d get at Sporting.

I just don’t see it personally.

  3. Whatever happens with Townsend, his arrival at the club just highlights how important it is to have quality in those wide positions.

It’s definitely an area that I think we need to build on. The forwards we have can probably cope with the Championship – especially if they have quality on the width.
