With Benitez staying, 30-year-old decides to remain at Newcastle United

Newcastle United have been handed a huge boost with the news that Papiss Cisse will be staying put at the club

Despite Newcastle United’s relegation into the Championship, manager Rafael Benitez has agreed to continue on as manager at the club and surely as a consequence, a number of players have pledged their allegiance to the Magpies.

The likes of Ayoze Perez, Tim Krul, Vurnon Anita and Kevin Mbabu are all eyeing a stay at Newcastle and while Siem De Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum have been dropping hints regarding a potential exit, majority of the current crop look likely to stay put.

Now in another boost for the Magpies, striker Papiss Cisse has gone on to reveal that he is also willing to remain at St. James’ Park this summer.

Cisse had been consistently linked with a move away from Newcastle even when the Magpies were in the Premier League and it was expected that the 30-year-old would surely be looking for an exit following the club’s relegation.

Surprisingly though, Cisse has gone on to reveal that he is open to seeing out his contract at Newcastle and is keen on helping the club earn promotion back into the Premier League.

The Senegalese international said, “We’re not a small team, I have a year left on my contract and I will stay put. Newcastle are a big club and can rise again overnight. All the players know this and we will take the club back up.”

Cisse has struggled for goals over the last few seasons and his relationship with the fans is not the strongest at the moment. Nonetheless, the striker would have endeared himself to the club faithful following his latest admission and he will surely want to play a big part next season.

  1. Cheers Nick. Please post a link in the bottom of the last thread under the comments so people know a new article is up.

I imagine Cisse saying this has more to do with not being able to match his wages elsewhere but who knows. I don’t think he will be any good in the Championship. Poor touch and not physical enough to make up for a lack of intelligence. Would rather see him go tbh.

  2. Guys is there no way to put the links to old and new articles UNDER the comments like it used to be? It makes more sense that way because most readers press refresh and are automatically taken straight to the last comment – so they won’t know that a new article is up.

Also, the latest comments on the site used to appear under the league table. Where have they gone?

How come this article is not on the homepage? I know Andy was talking about not putting the ‘OK magazine’ articles on the homepage but this one is not speculative trash – it’s a quote from one of our players on their future.

SHAM I agree on both your points 1 need a note at end of the last thread,Cissie will get nowt in the ccc move him on Imo or will Rafa keep him with Mitro missing the first four games but I think Rafa will bring in another striker hopefully someone that has a good touch, can hold the ball up and has a bit of pace, and can stay on side all which Cissie cannot do

  6. Thanks Nicky, I have always been a Cisse fan but he has definitely gone off the boil of late, without his wonder goals there isn’t really much else on offer really. I don’t buy the always offside thing either and a long while back I put up the stats to show he was offside much less than some of the PL so called top strikers. I am not sure he’ll cut it in the championship though and maybe he would be better off moving on with our thanks for some lovely goals. However Rafa does seem to like him so maybe he sees something worth keeping when he trains? I do want to see Arma get a fair crack of the whip in this league.

Sham, good job you put up thread link as I been in and out all this week and have been stuck on what I thought was a quiet thread once or twice.

Hey Andy – to be a pain. Any story where you get a quote from a player or staff member at the club is obviously not speculative per se, so it should be on the homepage.

Transfer rumours with no obvious source or quote from the people concerned themselves are obviously just cheap ‘hit’ generators – if that makes sense?

Is it not possible to put the links to old and new threads under the last comment instead of on top? Or if not, flip the comments so the newest appears at the top?

And what happened to the latest comments being under the league table?

  18. We have to remember Rafa is rebuilding the entire club. Don’t expect miracles straight away. We need to stick with this for several seasons. So no moaning after the first loss!!!

  19. Ta Shamrock. We can’t afford to get sentimental about this. The younger players have to come first now.

  20. G2 I do expect automatic promotion, but would have expected that no matter who the manager was. What I am cautious about is talk of setting new records etc. I’m not convinced we will match the points tally we had during our last Fizzy Pop league jaunt and do not expect us to be a PL top 10 club inside 3 years. Just going back up, a couple of half decent cup runs and comfortably avoiding relegation battles would be success for me. Anything else is not really good enough though. Rafa asked for total control. The price he pays for that is bringing enough results to provide meaningful stability and sustainability.

      (Quote)

  21. Excellent points Shamrock. I would say to get up into the top 6 in the Prem is a five year project given the shambles the club is in right now. If people start moaning straight away Rafa will get fed up and leave.

  22. Cisse is the flakiest player at the toon….? There are a whole bunch of flakes impersonating footballers at the toon. Cisse, Wijnaldum and Sissoko included.
They should all be forced to stay at the toon and get us back into the premier league… Janmaat included.

Having said that, without Cisses goals over the last years we would have been in big trouble. Obviously it will take a manager of the stature of Rafa, including his back-room entourage, to get things turned around.
Whoever came up with the brilliant idea of placing McLaren and his A-Team of Carr, Moncur and Beardsley amongst others in charge of the toon really does need there heeds examined. The again we now have Rafa…the same culprit perhaps.

Mr Mike Ashley really must be an absolutely immense boss to his middle and senior managers. He really is loyal to them, no matter how much they muff it he sticks with them. An honourable trait in a gazillionaire I say. I hope Rafa realises what he has….plus an absolutely adoring Geordie public…

  23. To establsh the Toon as a regular top 12 team in the EPL will take he duration of Rafa’s first 3 year contracts.
I agree with Shamrock though, anything other than promotion first time round will be a massive shock and failure….pretty much along the lines of our relegation..

  24. If we do end up keeping Cisse I would only use him for 15 minutes at the end of some matches. He’s just not a good enough all round player. I won’t even get into Riviere. He just has to go.

  25. Good discussion going on here. I’m not as harsh about promotion. If it takes 2 seasons instead of 1 but we are a much stronger squad I would accept it with no complaints. I want to see us top 8 in the first season though based on the money and player depth we should have.

      (Quote)

  26. G2 I fear for this club if we don’t go up first time. There is a massive drop in income during 2nd and 3rd years in the Championship. We can’t keep a quality squad if we don’t go up first time.

      (Quote)

  27. I would like to see McCormack in to replace Cisse. We should be able to play a strong attacking side with two up front in the Champs. I would pair McCormack with Armstrong in the pre-season and put Mitro with Perez. Have a look at different strike partnerships. I’m sure Rafa will do something along those lines but probably much more nuanced.

  28. It’s dangerous to build expectations too high though Shamrock mate. We’ve taken a hammering for several seasons now. That’s why I would prefer to see Charnley out the door with Carr. They’re part of the cause of the mess we’re in. And add a few others to that list including Beardsley. If we’re going to start fresh we should start fresh properly. Leaving dead wood around in important positions is dangerous as we’ve seen over and over again.

  30. I’m not fussed about Carr and Charnley now. Carr won’t be making any decisions, he will just be concentrating on organising the scouting assignments set out by the manager – like he always should have been doing. Charnley will just be setting budgets and negotiating deals. It will be Rafa making the football decisions.

One year in the Championship does not see the club lose too much money or lose too much ground on the competition but 2 years or more is disaster because of the ground we would lose commercially and in squad quality and depth. Say we spend 3 years in the fizzy – We would earn a total of 90 million and will have shed almost all of our most talented players by then. Meanwhile, Sunderland would have taken 300 million, have a far stronger squad and probably have a bigger worldwide pull than us. It just can’t happen. Every time we get promoted, we would go back down again. It has to be a first time strike – but I’m confident it will be.

  31. Oh, oh, there go those expectations. This worries me a bit when good bloggers are so set on an immediate return. What happens if we lose out in the playoffs for example but otherwise have an excellent year with young players developing well? I say support Rafa through thick and thin for the entire 3 seasons. As for the mackems, who says they’re going to stay up even next season Shamrock mate? I see them being relegated soon. Dafoe is aging and they really aren’t building anything. Sam will be gone as soon as they have a bad run next season.

The Mackems was an example. There are 19 other PL teams we would lose vast ground to as well. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect promotion at the first attempt. Rafa would agree or he would not be here. We are the biggest team in the Championship and will be favourites to get promoted. On top of that Rafa will be allowed to keep who he wants and even make signings on top of that. No way we should be setting the bar so dangerously low.

I reckon Carr bit off more than he could chew and took his eye off the ball. He lost sight of what he was good at and forgot where his talents lie.
