As Mitrovic hints at exit, promising youngster speaks regarding Newcastle United future

Adam Armstrong could potentially usurp Aleksandar Mitrović as Newcastle United’s first choice striker next season

Mitrovic has been bit of a disappointment after joining Newcastle United on a £13million deal from Anderlecht last season and while his committed displays have been appreciated by the fans, a number of disciplinary problems as well as lack of goals have certainly not.

Following Newcastle’s relegation into the Championship, Mitrovic has hinted that he might leave St. James’ Park upon learning about the interest from Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon recently.

Speaking regarding the link, Mitrovic said, “I have got four more years of my Newcastle deal and I have not received any official approach. I am very happy in England but it is always good when you see your name linked to a club like Sporting – a big club.

“If something did come up, then they (Sporting or whoever) would have to talk with Newcastle first, then only then with myself and my agent.”

While Newcastle fans would surely not want to see Mitrovic leave, the North East based outfit have a readymade replacement lined up in the form of Adam Armstrong.

Armstrong enjoyed a stunning campaign on loan at Coventry City last season, scoring 20 goals in 40 appearances and is expected to feature heavily for Newcastle in the Championship.

The 19-year-old is looking forward to the prospect of starring for Newcastle next season and has now stated that he will work very hard in order to earn the spot as the first choice striker.

He told the Northern Echo, “Getting on the pitch at St James’ Park was massive for me being from Newcastle. Newcastle is my club at the minute and that’s who I want to play for.

“I want to work really hard in pre-season and try to get into the gaffer’s mind and we’ll see what happens next season.”
