  1. The Asics blue star shirt for me. I loved the away kit as well – that blue one.
I was around 12-13 at the time and it was the beginning of something truly great. It was a cracking team that just kept getting better under KK.

  2. To be honest I quite liked all the strips from the past really did like the grandad one, since Wonga appeared on the shirts it has quickly gone down the pan, sales must have gone down on them with adults it just kids I think buying the Wonga one as they don’t really have much idea on the logo

  3. All this talk about a few clubs wanting Townsend is just that talk, there has been no clubs enquire about him as yet

  4. Ice I liked the blue star & brown ale sponsorship coz it felt local to Newcastle as well.
I didn’t really like the Northern Rock logo – but I think that’s coz my grandad lost a small fortune thanks to the ***** way they were run.

I hate the puma strips as well. Very poor quality & just looks very cheap IMO – the Wonga sponsorship really does help either.

  6. Cheers Shola’s ghost, nice article.
My all time favourite is the 95-97 granddad collar shirt and I still have it. I do like the 12-13 virgin strip too.

  7. I see the Welsh are taking the Micky out of Henderson being unable to cross a ball, and they are dead right

  8. I hope we play the tougher teams personally. They don’t deserve an easy ride & actually, they don’t really turn up against weaker sides either. It’s all well and good beating the smaller nationals in the pre tournament qualifiers, but they need to turn up now!!.
I just don’t see any urgency to destroy a team – to turn them over 4-5 nil.

  9. Sharpy: the papers are going over the top, they always do. I suppose that is what sells papers or get you clicks. At least they haven’t superimposed Mr. Roy’s head on a turnip – yet!

We haven’t played badly, but failed to finish. There just seems to be a feel of inevitability about it. We were given the easiest group in the tournament and failed to grasp the opportunity of a path to the semi-finals. Now we will face the favourites in the cauldron of their capital city. Yes, France are still favourites and this is the way it usually works. That there is so much pressure on the home side that they sputter to begin with, but if they are one of the traditional powers they at least make the semi-finals and usually the final.

Remember also, that France had not played any competitive football in 2 years so are just getting back into the swing of things. The only saving grace is that they banned Benzema.

  10. Ice: I see Henderson is getting good reviews but I don’t see what he did that was any good and he can’t take a corner to save his life.

  11. Fact is, we can say that teams sit back and defend against us but Wales easily dispatched Russia and put 2 past the Slovaks and so nearly held us to a draw. That makes them better than us at doing the job of dispatching the opposition. Roy has to thank the Lord that we got the late winner v Wales or we’d look even bigger failures today.

  12. You know you can get some of the retro shirts online for a fraction of the Wonga monstrosity? I got the blue star one on sale for about $20. It was either kitbag or worldsoccershop. They occasionally have sales so you should wait and the quality is quite good.

  13. If Townsend goes then given NUFC has rescued his career he should not press for the £10.5M buyout clause so that NUFC is at least rewarded with a decent price. Hope he stays though and helps to take the club forward. He could become a cult figure here rather than an also ran elsewhere, not assured of a starting place.

  14. Well Northern Ireland set their stall out to defend in numbers but Germany have scored, hit the woodwork twice and have about 6 shots on target.they will score a couple more. That’s the difference between a good side and England. They see to their business.

  15. Credit to N.I this 2nd half, they are having a go for what it’s worth. May even progress to next round with 3 points.

  16. My mate has been in the German bar in Leeds watching the N.ireland game & they had a promo on – a free shot for every goal Germany scored against Ireland. He now hates Michael McGovern 😆

Well done to them & fingers crossed they get to play another game.

  17. Yes it would be a fairytale for them Sharpy. I reckon they have a good chance. their keeper was deservedly man of the match.

  18. I have been thinking about it and meeting the French in the Quarter Finals would not be a bad thing. That’s as far as I expected us to go and would be one of the games of the Tournament whatever the result. We all want to see England play one of the favourites and have a good showing. It would be better than going out with a whimper to Hungary or Croatia.

If we lose, it will be as expected. If by some chance we win then there would be some real excitement for the first time in ages.

  19. That Spanish strip is minging man, from a distance it looks like someone has puked over their shoulder.

  20. I have been looking at Group F and it is very unlikely that England will get Portugal. The only way that Portugal can finish 2nd is if there are 2 draws. It is possible, but 3 of these teams have still not claimed their places so they won’t be playing for draws. Hungary are the only team that will be playing for a draw.

  21. Man City are just about to sign Nolito and Liverpool are saying they have no interest in Townsend. Who makes this stuff up. In my opinion, there are only 4 teams I think he would go to – West Ham, Leceister, Southampton and Everton. The first 3 are likely to lose a winger so I think we will not be keeping Townsend.

  22. Get in Northern Ireland.

Well done Croatia . There are a few dark horses in this year’s tournament. Perhaps England have a chance because Spain have shown if you push higher up the pitch, they will struggle. Germany won today but we’re wasteful again.

Wales though have done really well. Ramsey, Bale and Williams on fire and the while squad fighting for each other. They might just suprise themselves yet.

  23. Eric I hope Townsend stays. We accept Sissy, Gini and Janmaat going but Townsend would be a step too far. We would not have any genuine stars left and the while thing would feel flat again.

Sham – I think we might see Sissoko staying as well to be honest mate – unless a huge bid comes in for him, but I don’t see that happening.
I see a big bid coming in for Gini & expect him to leave for £20m plus.
I expect Janmaat to leave but expect that to be for more round what we paid for him.
I think & hope Colo leaves but that one depends on compo money.
I suspect Tiote & Cisse will leave along with a number of fringe players like Gouffran & Riviere.

The rest I think stay & he adds maybe 5-6 newbies to the squad.

  25. Very weird second half with Spain and Croatia. On the penalty, the keeper was 3 yards off his line when the kick was taken. Why bother having any rules at all? Spain were far too timid. Croatia earned the win but what a poor effort on the penalty. Who picked Ramos?

  26. Sham: I just think we will see Mahrez, Payet and Mane all leave and Townsend is an obvious replacement.

  27. Some strange managerial decisions in the tournament. Roy making 6 changes after a win, del Bosque leaving Iniesta in there today and letting Ramos take the penalty. What are those boys thinking? I mean really….

  28. Payet will be in huge demand after this tournament. Can see several top clubs being after him. Tremendous playmaker and shot taker. What a combination.

G2 – you might be right mate, but do you see the WH pornbrokers letting him go for anything other than record breaking money?.
I don’t, they aren’t skint and don’t need or want to sell. They’ve just moved into the bigger stadium & will want the likes of Payet selling it out week in week out.
I think there are only a handful of clubs in the World who could afford what WH will accept – and they won’t sell him to an English club.
Of the rest, i only see PSG maybe being interested.
