It seems all the paper talk regarding Dwight Gayle’s move to Newcastle United has come to fruition with the 25-year-old reportedly close to agreeing terms with the Magpies.
After a frustrating season at Crystal Palace, it seems the winger has traded a life of substitute appearances under Alan Pardew in the Premier League for seemingly a first team berth in the Championship with Rafa Benitez.
With other potential deals coming thick and fast and the rumours hotting up, this summer could prove to be one of the busiest yet for Newcastle United.
The question is, how will he fit into Rafa and the club’s long term plan? Was he simply signed on the pretence of getting us back up to the football league summit OR assuming we get there, does Benitez believe he can kick on in the North East and be one of the main men to help get us back to where we belong?
Have your say in the comments section below.
G2: I am sure that Sels has been promised a fair crack at number 1 keeper. I have said a few times that I am not sold on Darlow as his positional sense is off sometimes and he flaps at crosses.

When your own supporters start calling you “Colo the Clown” I think your time is up.

If the reports that Liverpool want Sissoko for 12 million are correct I would say that is fairly cheap. They just paid 34 million for Mane who is a similar type of player – great on his day, but goes missing too often.
Sissoko was beginning to find some form and consistency under Rafa so I think he might be a bargain. Can you really imagine playing for Pards, Carver and Schteve during your NUFC career and actually having a clue what you are expected to do?
Eric Sykes(Quote)
ERIC thanks for that link but as soon as I see any article by Ryder I cringe I wouldn’t give him a job emptying wheelie bins mate,he’s a right ******
Icedog(Quote)
Toon say they want 20 mil for Siko and Gino each, and Rafa has had a meeting with agents of both and told them when you find a club that will pay that come back
Icedog(Quote)
Ice: even though we know Sissiko blows hot and cold we also know he is capable of taking a team apart. He has 40 caps for France, yes 40. Considering the market, 20 million sounds about right. We are paying 12 million for Ritchie who has 1 PL season and 30 million seems to be the going rate for anyone with a pulse at the Euros who is not out of contract.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
I liked the article by the ex Chelsea on Rafa saying he’s brutal and great coach he likes to play with two banks of four but is not just about defence it’s team work, after games he would ask players how did you think you played did you make any mistakes if you said I made no mistakes he would quickly show you 3 or 4 mistakes you made
Icedog(Quote)
Mind that E.Howe must be a canny judge of players he brought quite a few cheap player and brought them up to PL standard,he only gave half a mil for Richie
Icedog(Quote)
Portugal are really poor this tournament, very suspect
Kimtoon(Quote)
Has it been confirmed Colo is off to san Lorenzo or is it the mag regurgitating Argy press gossip. We have been here before with Colo so say off to San Lorenzo.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Ryder the clown has confirmed he’s going/gone mate
Icedog(Quote)
Kimtoon: when Ronaldo was lining up that 35 yard free kick the commentators here said he had taken 40 in major tournaments before this without scoring.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Ice: I was wary of quoting Ryder, but he seems pretty certain Colo is leaving.
I think he must have been on holiday because he hadn’t written much lately and the interns’ writing skills put him to shame 🙂
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Richie has landed at Newcastle airport, medical t/morrow
ERIC aye your right on Ryder

The Telegraph have reported the details of the Ritchie deal. Just to keep the Chronicle straight, because they love to inflate transfer fees as I said before, it is 10 million up front with 2 mil in add-ons. I expect it is similar to Gayle which is 8.5 million up front and 1 mil for 20 goals and 1 mil if promoted.
So that is 18.5 million up front. NOT the 25 million The Chronicle reported this morning (which did not include Sels). I suppose that is what you get when your chief sports writer is Ryder.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Only at NUFC could a Championship game against Huddersfield be a 52,000 sell out.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Cheers ice
Eric, Is that true about the free kicks 😯
Kimtoon(Quote)
And that’s why it’s a crying shame we were relegated mate. Sky sports must be gutted we went down, they never had a half empty stadia on camera when we played unlike some clubs I could mention. The fans have turned up in numbers throughout all the lean times, I can think of plenty of so called big clubs who’s fan base would of fallen through the floor if they had to endure the ***** we’ve put up with.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Kimtoon: it was British commentators who gave the Ronaldo stat. One was Stuart Robson, I forget the other.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
John Champion is the one that gave the Ronaldo stat.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
What the hell has happened to Christiano in this tournament? He has been so **** you might think Mr. Roy had been coaching him.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Eric, a touch of humility will do him wonders mate.
Kimtoon(Quote)
KImtoon: I know it won’t happen, but it would be hilarious for Ronaldo to face Iceland again. He would learn not to disparage and rile up the Vikings.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Isn’t “The Mountain” from Game of Thrones from Iceland? Maybe they could draft him into the team next time they play Portugal?
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Yup, from Wikipedia:
“Hafþór Júlíus “Thor” Björnsson (Icelandic pronunciation: born November 26, 1988) is an Icelandic professional strongman, actor, and former professional basketball player. He is also known for his role as Ser Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane in the HBO series Game of Thrones.”
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Golden opportunity for Ronaldo to win it. His body language has been appalling today. Any time his teammates have made an error he is acting like it is a personal affront to him and yet he has made more mistakes than anybody.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Dwight Gayle’s stats are impressive for a player who obviously disliked by Pardew.
He and Ritchie have Championship experience and ability to play in Premiership of we go up.
More interestingly is both are British. Seems Rafa wants a more British outfield.
funkyjesus(Quote)
Some cracking pens up to then
Kimtoon(Quote)
Portugal through then
Kimtoon(Quote)
Yup. They have done better than I thought they would. Fair play to them. Pepe is playing really well I think.
Shamrock(Quote)
I was out on a day sesh yesterday so am catching up this morning.
So Townsend having a medical at Palace then – shame coz I think he might have shown more loyalty than that – I mean where were Palace when he was at Spurs?!.
But if that’s where he wants to be then good luck to the kid. But he won’t develop with Pardew as he would have with Rafa IMO.
Sharpy17(Quote)
If Pards has another death spiral he may well end up in a relegated team come may.
Kimtoon(Quote)
So we confirm Gayle & Palace confirm Townsend.
To be fair, if it was going to happen I’m pleased it happened early in the window rather than hanging over us for months.
I think he’s settled for the first club to show an interest personally. I think he could have got a better club, but maybe the fact they are London based played a big part.
I’m disappointed, but good luck to the lad.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Kim – it’s very possible. They only finished a few points ahead of us last season.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Sharpy, I wish him well but I am very disappointed, he was going nowhere until we threw him a lifeline. I could stomach it more if it were Everton or West Ham for instance but Palace, REALLY.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Hope we are busy working on defenders now, that area has been neglected far too long.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Disappointed it is Palace that Townsend has left for but eh ho. Hopefully we will finish above them in the seasons to come.
Definite sea change at the club under Rafa and good to see the club backing him. Pretty sure Krul, Sissoko, Gini and Janmaat will leave also but if we can replace them we will be better equipped without them.

Aussie Magpie Fan(Quote)
Now Palace have Townsend and are reported to be in for Benteke at 30 mil, you just know it will make no difference anyway. Pardew will contrive to screw it up somehow. This is the man who had Tevez and Mascerano and didn’t play them and was sacked when West Ham were bottom of the league.
Welcome to your brave new world Andros, hope you like playing right back.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
What sticks in my throat is Townsend is only 24 so has the best years in front of him which will be ruined by Pardew.
Two defenders will arrive in the next week, with no release clauses in contracts reading between the lines Penfold has had his fingers slapped of Rafa for including such a clause, which Rafa won’t allow in the future ❗
Icedog(Quote)
Who the fook is Townsend anyway? He could not even get into the worst England team in the last 20 years!
He is not one of us anymore so I say don’t give him another seconds thought. We have the new Bellamy and Ritchie is coming in. Sorted ?
Shamrock(Quote)
SHAM that’s the way to look at it mate onwards and upwards, two defenders in shortly,up to now net spend is 3.7 mil so it will also keep jabba happy
Icedog(Quote)
At least the new guys will keep our long list of absolute tossers off the field. It’s hard to believe the club have signed so many poor players. There’s a list of about 10-12 who just need showing the door. Thanks Mr Carr!
Georgio(Quote)
Thanks for the goals I guess Andros, maybe if we’d actually gotten rid of Steve when we should have done then you’d have helped save us, but as is you had a decent couple of months and will probably consign your career to oblivion at palace.
Shame though, plenty of others I’d have rather seen shown the door first!
Newkie(Quote)
I’m not going to hate on Townsend. The kid came in & tried his hardest to keep us up. I hoped for more from him but he obviously has his reasons – karma can be a ***** & I think it’s a decision that will likely bite him on the ****.
But I’m grateful to him for the effort he put in while he was with us – more than some have shown.
