  1. the guys never had a chance due to injurys so how can we judge him,i said at the time we bought him he was cheap for the class of player he “was” thought there was a rabbit off there,Carrr sucked in maybe?

  2. Agree, he’s had a terrible problem with his lung, that takes some getting over. Not sure he has the appetite for the second tier myself. There was talk he wasn’t happy back end of last season but that could be because of lack of playing time. That’s not a bad fee if we can get it, but I hate to judge him having not seen enough of him. It does seem an intelligent player with a good touch, how well his style is suited to the championship, who knows.
    thanks for the thread Andy

  3. De Jong has not done one single thing of note for us in 2 years. He’s slow, clumsy, unathletic and the games just pass him by. He had one game as a sub when for 20 minutes he didn’t even touch the ball. He may be intelligent, take up good positions and have a hell of a shot but not here in English football. Get rid!

£6.75 million is a great deal IMO. SELL!

Not seen anything of him to be disappointed if he leaves, and I’ll leave those in the know to decide if he can contribute this season or if the deal offered is worth getting rid.

Disappointed to see Townsend leave mind you, but good to see proven players come in. Leicester have shown what can be done with a solid nucleus sprinkled with some stardust. We’ve been lacking that solid nucleus for years. The likes of Ritchie and Gayle should be able to produce consistently good performances for us. Hoping some other players can too.

  6. At the of the day he has achieved naff all during 2 years with us. It’s not necessarily his fault, as he has had bad luck with injuries – but part of the reason we went down was because we had so many sick, laim and feckless – and he absolutely falls into that catagory one way or the other. Let him go and start fresh.

I really worry that the injury to his lungs will mean he’s going to struggle with the pace of the English game.
Ordinarily I would have said let’s give him a chance to prove himself, but if the £6.75m fee is correct then that is enough to get a very decent replacement.

Alternatively there is still Nick Powell & Hal Robson-Kanu on a free … or Berbatov, which could be the thinking on that one.

Hal Robson-Kanoun will be inundated with offers by now, we won’t get him. Anyway we need defenders first and foremost .

At 33 I reckon Rafa would be bringing him in as a mentor to Mbabu & Sterry.

With Saylor gone & Colo has been told he can sling his hook, it’s proper CBs I want to see in.

He did seem to help gel the team together even though he didn’t have any major impact on the games..

  32. Warnock shares his concerns about Gayle at Newcastle, reveals why he never picked him

    By North-east correspondent Harry Sykes

Neil Warnock is not convinced that Dwight Gayle is the striker to spearhead Newcastle’s return to the Premier League.

The Magpies signed the Crystal Palace forward on Friday morning on a five-year deal for around £10million, as they completed a whirlwind round of new signings that also included £5million goalkeeper Mats Sels and £12million winger Matt Ritchie.

Gayle scored 26 goals in 74 appearances during his three seasons at Palace, but a disappointing second half of the 2015-16 campaign saw the club make an alarming drop down the table and resulted in the striker’s expected departure.

Gayle, who joined Palace in 2013 from Peterborough for a fee of £6million, was managed by Warnock when he was in charge at Selhurst Park.

“He was glad I left because I never picked him,” ex-Palace boss Warnock told the Alan Brazil programme on talkSPORT on Tuesday morning. “I couldn’t find a system for him.

“It’ll be interesting to see what they (Newcastle) do as they’ve spent a lot of money on him, £10million, apparently.”

Benitez has added Gayle to a forward roster that already includes the likes of Papiss Cisse, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez.

  36. Kimtoon: I think Palace were bottom when Warnock was sacked. His level has only ever been Championship and he failed EVERY time he was in the PL. I don’t know why he is having a go at Gayle, you would have thought it would be water under the bridge. It is a very strange statement to say that he didn’t know where to play him. I would have thought he had seen loads of players like Gayle – small, fast with quick feet – I certainly have and could probably name about 100 off the top of my head. I don’t see anything unique in Gayle so I don’t know what Warnock is blabbing about. He was always one of those managers who loved the sound of his own voice and had an opinion on everything – Bigsamitis I think it is called.

  37. I am happy that Colocinni has left “by mutual consent” although I have to admit that I am surprised he left so much money on the table. That shows the extent of his homesickness, I think. He was a good player, but in retrospect his contract should never have been extended. That wasn’t his fault and who among us would turn down another 7 million quid? We can mock Charnley but I think he thought Colo had a couple of years left as centre halfs play until their mid-30s sometimes. However, when they lose it they really lose it. Just look at John Terry this year and Sol Campbell when he was with us. I am sure the plan was for him to mentor our young centre halfs who were raw or new to the league but had a lot of talent. However, I doubt if he was the right man for that job as he doesn’t seem the type to be able to put his arm around their should or communicate in his second language. That the plan didn’t work out didn’t mean it didn’t have a certain merit or logic.

I think we all knew on here that there wasn’t much left in Colo whan his contract was extended but he was playing with Taylor and Williamson so that didn’t help. If the plan to bring the young players along was to work Colo really needed a tall and quick experienced player next to him to do his running. He was still a good footballer, but having lost that yard of pace he was always going to be exposed in the PL where the players get quicker every year.

I once saw a TV profile of Colo. They portrayed him as the ultimate professional who would be first to training. About the only insight they gave was that he would start his day with a cup of Argentine tea. The pictures of him were by himself in the dressing room and he didn’t give an interview, not even in Spanish to be translated. I got, and still have, the impression of someone not qute comfortable at NUFC but still quite an honourable man. I think that was backed up by his willingness to let go of such a lucrative contract.

Lastly, when Colo signed his extension he still had a year left on his deal. Leaving like this is like the extension never happened so we should not have any animosity to him. Charnley and Carr are still at fault for not getting in the correct player to be along side him and that was true for many years before last year.

Love that. I always felt that the guy wanted to play from us as he never seemed to go missing in games and he could have had a much cushier life in Spain. Also I do have sympathy with the pull between playing for our great club and spending time with his family. Anyone criticising his desire to play for his home team and be with his kids is just ice cold. Alan Shearer rejected a bigger club and greater chances of winning trophies to play for his hometown club, so why would we slate Colo for wanting the same?

Good luck Colo. Always welcome back in Newcastle from my perspective.

I know where your coming from mate, few years back I went to a few places in Wales to judge music bands, they would at times start speaking Welsh when it came to certain points, was also offered bribes to give some bands good marks I told them where to shuff their bribes, sorry but dislike the welsh

  41. Sham: you might just have bumped into a few bad uns. I lived in Cardiff briefly and they were alright. For every Gary Speed there is a Craig Bellamy or Robbie Savage.

I quite liked Bellamy when he played for us because he wound the other team up and did Shearer’s running. However, he could be a ****. One of the stories I remember was from his Cov days when they were coming back on a coach from a game. He got so annoying that the other players trapped him in the toilet and wouldn’t let him out.

I have lived in the USA for 26 years and I still occasionally get homesick and want to see friends and family from home. I don’t have kids either but I can understand him wanting to be with them.

It must have been difficult for him to see the way the club was dicking his best mate Jonas round. Hard to stay loyal & professional to a club doing that to someone you are so close to & who was suffering in such a way.

Good luck to Colo back home. Hopeless captain but an honest player who give us some good years.

i think he showed great loyality when we went down and could have got a good deal elsewhere so he must be praised for that he must also be praised for having to put a double shift in trying to do his job and cover up taylor or willo at the same time no wonder hes mentally stuffed also with his family being away,i have worked in a number of places over the world the pull from home gets at you a lot

New start for all involved and I wish him well.

      (Quote)

  51. Yeah Sharpy: how the f can Jose see so clearly what we already knew about Rooney? And how can Van Gaal and especially Mr. Roy not see it. It was obviously a massive risk playing Rooney in midfield but as soon as he had one decent half his Pals in the press were making him out to be Pirlo or Xabi Alonso. Of course, when the pressure was on Rooney reverted to type and couldn’t make a 10 yard pass.

I loved the bit from Jose saying that he (Jose) could make a 50 yard pass with no pressure 🙂 I think that it will end in tears and I am looking forward to it. I don’t particularly dislike Rooney but I hate the press making excuses for him and he really is past it but they won’t admit it.

  52. Just watched Roger Speed being interviewed on BBC breakfast, he’s over with his grandsons to watch the match. The guy was emotional but very proud of Gary’s legacy, his wife couldn’t attend as finds it still too upsetting still. He said the fans in the square were chanting his name last night.

Sham, you are right, the Welsh can be really abrasive at times, Hazel was once lost while on the road in Wales, she stopped to ask directions very late at night whilst driving over there. She said the guy she asked was almost affronted that she’d dare ask directions and couldn’t believe how rude he was. On the other hand she knows people from Wales who are really nice folk, just depends who you come across I suppose. I wish them well tonight for Speedos memory if nowt else.

      (Quote)

  53. Kim – I think Speed should be acknowledged, but I think Wales success goes back to the likes of Toshack who oversaw that transition. He was the bloke who had to drop the old guard & national treasures for the young unknowns at the time. He was loosing games all over the place, but building vital experience & putting together a group of players forming a bond that has got them where they are now.
Toshack was moved on coz the masses thought he was nuts for not selecting the older more experienced players – but Speed came in and agreed with Tosh. Speed was & still is loved by the Welsh so if he backed that idea then they were happy to go with it.
It was just starting to bare fruits when Speed left us.
Coleman then had the courage to continue the blueprint & the players have continued to buy into it and work their socks off.

We have a young group of players in that squad who could achieve the same – with the right guidance that is.

      (Quote)

  54. I can’t say I’m keen on this Norwegian lad we are supposedly after. He had a stinker at Saints & hasn’t played high level football since.
We’ve lost Saylor, Willo & Colo from that position – our experience. Leaving only Mbemba & Lascelles as our CBs. This area of our squad has always been weak & now is light on numbers too.
We desperately need strong experienced players in that position – not taking risks like Vorren.

  55. We are being heavily linked to some Spanish right back called Jesus Gamez now. Never heard of him, but apparently he covers left back too. He only played 10 league games last season for Athletico, but I guess they are a good side. He has no significant injury history and has just turned 31.

  56. Guys, if you’re trying to compare Geordie hospitality to hospitality in other areas (i.e. Wales), then Geordie hospitality will always win. It’s not a fair contest!

I’ve been a Toon fan for over 20 years now, despite not being from Newcastle, but when I lived there about 12 years ago, I experienced the hospitality first hand.

My favourite story was when looking to buy a house. I couldn’t find the place I was supposed to be viewing (before the days of smartphones and SatNavs) so I stopped on a nearby street and asked this random guy who was washing his car. He stopped what he was doing and invited me into his house. He insisted I sat down and asked me if I had time for a tea or coffee, when I politely refused because I didn’t want to disturb them any more than necessary, he told me his wife was logging onto the computer to print out a map to where I needed to go and it was no trouble at all. Sitting in a complete stranger’s house with a cup of coffee while his wife printed out a map to the house I wanted to view! Brilliant. I’ve never experienced anything else like that in my whole life. I don’t sound like a Geordie, I wasn’t wearing a Toon shirt. I was just some (southern sounding) bloke who was lost. Love it.

  57. Nice story TDS. I was hitch hiking in South France one night with a male friend when a lone female stopped and picked us up (this was in the middle of nowhere). She took us to her house and introduced us to her husband. They then fed us, got us drunk on wine from their vineyard and played instruments for us – then dropped us off. Tip top!
