Ex-boss says Newcastle United are ‘buying’ promotion into the Premier League

Chris Hughton

Ex-Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton believes that his former club are looking to buy success in the Championship.

It goes without saying that Newcastle United are one of the most financially strong teams in the Championship at the moment and the Magpies have displayed their financial muscle in full force by splashing the cash to secure the services of Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie, Matz Sels and Jesus Gamez so far.

The signing of the aforementioned players has significantly strengthened the Newcastle squad and many now believe that the Magpies will be able to coast their way to promotion during the upcoming Championship campaign.

However, former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton does not believe that Newcastle can afford to get complacent in the unforgiving nature of the English second division and has warned that the Tyneside based outfit will find it difficult.

Hughton, who guided Newcastle into the Premier League during their previous spell in the Championship, told the Argus, “I think they will find it hard because the league is hard. Ritchie and Gayle are two Premier League players but they know the Championship as well.

“The impression I get straight away from their purchases is they are buying to get promotion from the Championship. They have bought two very good players.

“Because of the financial clout they have I expect them to buy well for the Championship and how ever hard they find it one thing is guaranteed, it will be a tough place to go. I expect them to have a good season.”
