Newcastle United unlikely to pursue £5 million-rated star

Targett

Newcastle United do not hold any interest in signing Matt Targett from Southampton, according to reports from the Chronicle.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is not letting up on his relentless pursuit to improve his squad this summer and signing a new central defender is clearly high on the agenda for the Spanish boss.

In surprise reports recently though, it had been claimed that Benitez was also on the lookout for a new left-back and a £5 million swoop for Southampton youngster Matt Targett had been touted.

Southampton were believed to be struggling to come to terms with a new contract for Targett and as a result, the teenager leaving St. Mary’s Stadium had been seen as a possibility.

However in an update to the transfer story, revelations can be made by the Chronicle that Newcastle hold no interest whatsoever in signing Targett and that recruiting a new left full-back is not a priority for Benitez at the moment.
