Benitez speaks about prospective Hanley move

Rafael Benitez is refusing to give too much away regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of Grant Hanley.

Newcastle United are currently in talks with Blackburn Rovers over the signing of Grant Hanley but the Magpies already have had two bids of around £3.5 million and £4.5 million rejected.

It is believed that Blackburn value Hanley at around £6 million and Newcastle are now hoping to find a middle ground by recently placing a bid of £5.5 million.

It remains to be seen whether Blackburn will accept Newcastle’s latest bid for Hanley and understandably, manager Rafael Benitez was quizzed regarding the prospective transfer during the Magpies’ pre-season training camp in Ireland.

In response, Benitez hinted that Newcastle were trying their best to land the services of Hanley but insisted that Lee Charnley is in charge of getting the deal done.

The Spaniard told the Shields Gazette, “I think the market was quite slow, but now things are starting to move. We are trying to do what we want to do as soon as possible.

“It is something that I am aware of as I am talking every day with (managing director) Lee Charnley. He’s in charge of the signings and the business. I cannot talk too much about that.”
