Rob Elliot is set for talks over his future with Rafa Benitez but wants to stay at St James Park despite the recent signing of Matz Sels from Gent.
Speaking to News Talk before yesterday’s 6 – 0 win over Bohemians, the goalkeeper remains hopeful that Rafa Benitez has him in mind when he returns from injury:
“I have to say, [Rafa’s] been brilliant with me and he’s kept me involved loads. He brought me over here [for the friendly with Bohemians] with the group which is great for my confidence because I feel like I’m part of his plans when I come back.”
Injured whilst on international duty, Elliot isn’t expected to return before October. With Tim Krul another one to jump ship following relegation, the signing of Sels and emergence of Karl Darlow could have spelt the end for Elliot. However, he said that Benitez had kept him informed of his plans for next season and that he was definitely part of them.
It’s good to see that not only is Rafa looking to strengthen the squad, he is intent of keeping those who remain fully included in all his plans.
