This morning’s Daily Telegraph reports that Liverpool are set to make a £20m offer for Georginio Wijnaldum.
With Tottenham opening talks with Marseille for their winger, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, it seemed Everton were the only club having a genuine interest in the Dutchman. Whilst the Newcastle board have deliberately set Moussa Sissoko’s fee at a level which will deter almost all offers, Wijnaldum’s £27m seems to have more flexibility.
He’s made it abundantly clear he wants to leave Tyneside and if Liverpool do bid for him, I’d urge the the board to open talks with a view to completing the move quickly.
The same report notes that Liverpool leave for their USA pre-season tour this week so any deal would most likely be completed quickly or leave Wijnaldum hanging around St James Park until they return. That can’t be good for the Newcastle squad, to have that uncertainty in the air, and if he’s leaving, the sooner the better.
