It’s surprising it took this long but Dwight Gayle has realised that Newcastle United is a big club.
33,000 season ticket holders can’t be wrong but it took one man running onto the Bohemians pitch for him to realise what we all know: this is a very big club.
ChronicleLive reports that Gayle said after the 6 – 0 win:
“It was nice and to get it in front of the travelling support was good too.
“The fans make you realise just what a big club this is.
“It’s just great to get a goal and a run out.”
Getting a goal in pre-season will boost his confidence ahead of the next nine months but keeping that run going is crucial. If Gayle can go into the season with his shooting boots on, Mitrovic’s absence may not be so keenly felt in the first four games of the season.
Rafa Benitez confirmed that the Serb was withdrawn during the match for a minor knock on the ankle.
