Reports in the Daily Star are linking Newcastle with a move to sign Manchester United striker James Wilson.
The 20 year-old has been omitted from Jose Mourinho’s International Champions Cup matches in China over the next fortnight and Newcastle are one of a dozen clubs to show an interest in landing the youngster on a season-long loan.
Wilson played for Brighton & Hove Albion in last season’s Championship but doesn’t seem to have set the division on fire with just 5 goals in 25 appearances. I am all for Rafa Benitez giving youth a chance and for them to have the opportunity to learn their trade in the first XI.
But if we’re going to sign players on loan, they need to be ones who are going to add to the squad’s depth and provide competition for places. Wilson may do that but it’s a huge risk to take him on. He has a consistent record of a goal every five games for United and Brighton; surely we can find better than that?
