Pre-season is a tricky time for supporters. The players have clearly defined goals: match sharpness, understanding new tactics, building new partnerships.
But what of supporters? Our role is to support the team, get behind the lads. And to not get upset when we lose. Or worried with defensive lapses.
Should we be concerned by the sloppiness displayed last night at the Keepmoat?
For a new player, a goalkeeper in particular, he has to not just build partnerships with the defence but fill them with confidence. If he shouts “Keeper’s ball!”, they want to know he’s going to get there. When he calls for a back pass, they have to be sure his touch is good. Matz Sels’ wasn’t last night.
The time for genuine concern is not yet upon us but little setbacks like that can have a negative impact. Hopefully Sels and the back four will gain confidence in training sessions, ready for the new season.
