The Shields Gazette is reporting that Ciaran Clark is on Tyneside for a medical.
The Northern Ireland international’s release clause was triggered by Newcastle United yesterday and the defender has held talks with the club over a move away from Villa Park.
Earlier in the week, Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo commented that he hoped Clark’s future remained in Birmingham but it seems Clark’s head was turned by the opportunity of a move to St James Park.
There has been some debate among both sets of fans as to who was getting the better deal. Like any player he has his critics but Villa fans seem genuinely split over his departure.
That he is leaving for a promotion rival sends a message that The Magpies are seen as a better bet for a quick return to the Premier League.
