Stat Attack! Is Sissoko really worth £35m?

Prior to Euro 2016 Newcastle were reported to be asking for somewhere in the region of £20m – £25m for Moussa Sissoko. The player appeared to put in a series of good performances on the European stage, resulting in the new quoted asking price being in the region of £35m. This has only served to inflate an already massive ego and the Frenchman has taken every opportunity he can to declare his love and desire to play for a more ‘exclusive’ club. So far he has linked himself to Manchester United, Paris St.Germain, Real Madrid, Arsenal and one or two other clubs – without a hint of a bid having been made. The question is, is he really as good as he likes to believe – and is his price tag realistic?

The talent of the likes David Silva, Eden Hazard, Mezut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey is not in question – that’s why they ply their trade amongst the ‘established’ top 4. For that reason, with the talent that surrounds those players, it is unfair at this time to directly compare Sissoko to those players. However, there are several attacking midfielders of note currently with sides outside the established Top 4 that appear ready to make the step up to the ‘Big Time’. Players like Christian Eriksen of Tottenham Hotspur, Phillipe Coutinho of Liverpool, Gini Wijnaldum and Gylfi Sigurdsson of Swansea. Wijanaldum has recently been snapped up by Liverpool for £25m, but all of these players have failed to attract the interest of the world’s elite sides. If Sissoko can out-point these players in a direct comparison, then it’s fair to say he is the legitimate ‘next in line’ to make the step up to a truly ‘exclusive’ side – earning Newcastle the exclusive fee that goes with that type of signing.

As usual the players will be directly compared against each other in a number of fields. 10 points for 1st place, 7 points for 2nd, 5 points for 3rd, 3 points for 4th and zero points for 5th. The totls then get added up and we see who contributes more throughout the season, All of these players ply their trade from a similar position and all played approximately 3,000 minutes in the EPL last season, with the exception of Coutinho, who carried a couple of injuries and played only 2,000 minutes. He will lose a few points because of that. I considered bringing his averages up, but decided not to because part of a player’s value surely has to be actually being available throughout the season.

Fouls Committed:
How many times did these players gift the opposition possession? Coutinho only committed 9 fouls, Eriksen was 2nd with 13, 3rd goes to Wijnadulm with 16, Sigurdsson claims 4th with 25 and bringing up the rear is Sissoko with a staggering 50 fouls committed.

Fouls suffered:
Who won the most free kicks for their side? Gini Wijnaldum takes 10 points with 51, 7 points for Sissoko with 30, 5 points for Coutinho with 29, 3 points for Sigurdsson with 23 and zero points for Eriksen with 17.

% won – Aerial Duels:
Who gives extra influence in the air? Surprisingly Sissoko tops the charts with 48.15%. Next up is Wijnaldum with 36.76%, in third place is Eriksen with 35.42%, in 4th place is Sigurdsson with 13.33% and in last is Coutinho with 11.54%.

Successful Take-On’s – percentages:
Zero points for Sissoko this time with only 46.67%. In 4th place is Eriksen with 53.03%, in third is Sigurdsson with 54.55%, 2nd for Coutinho with 59.76% and top spot for Wijnaldum on 60.24%.

Pass Completion:
Bottom of the pile for Sissoko with 76%. First place for Wijnadlum on 85%, joint 3rd for Sigurdsson and Coutinho on 79% and 2nd place for Eriksen with 82%.

Key Passes:
This means goal scoring chances created for teammates. Wijnaldum only managed 43. Coutinho came in with 44, Sissoko chipped in with 49, Sigurdsson lined up 54 but Eriksen blew everybody out of the water with a mighty 101!

Assists:
As you might expect, Eriksen tops the chart again with 13. Sissoko claims 2nd spot with 7, joint 3rd place goes to Wijnaldum and Coutinho with 5 and last place falls to Sigurssdon with only 2.

Total Shots on target:
Who is getting into the right positions and testing the goalkeeper? Bottom for this one is Sissoko with only 17 for the season. He is way, way below everybody else on this vital stat. Wijnaldum managed 38 to earn himself 3 points. 5 points for Coutinho with 49 shots on target. 2nd spot for Sigurdsson with 50 and first place for Eriksen, who tested the goalkeeper 55 times.

Goals:
If you want to be considered a world class attacking midfielder, worthy of an exclusive club, then you need to show you can score a goal. Sissoko did just that last season. Literally. 1 goal. Eriksen takes 4th spot with 6. In third place is Coutinho with 8 goals, whilst Wijnaldum and Sigurdsson share the crown in this field with 11 goals each.

Total Points:

1st Place on 60 points: Gini Wijnaldum.
2nd Place on 55 points: Christian Eriksen.
3rd Place on 45 points: Phillipe Coutinho.
4th Place on 43 points: Gylfi Sigurdsson.
5th Place on 29 points: Moussa Sissoko.

I must admit, I’m shocked here. I knew Sissoko was not as good as he likes to think he is, but this is ridiculous! Sissoko is well adrift of the pack. On top of that, Wijnaldum absolutely battered him – and last season was Gini’s first in the Premier League. Sissoko does not score enough, is rubbish at taking players on (and having a positive outcome) and gives away way too many fouls. On the bright side, he can win a header and his assists record is not too bad. Is he an ‘exclusive’ player that deserves an ‘exclusive’ club? Is he heck.

Interestingly, trasnsfrmrkt.com valued Sissoko at a maximum of £12.75m when he was a Premier League player. Coutinho is valued at £29.75, Sigurdsson at £14.45m, Eriksen at £26.35and obviously Wijnaldum has just gone for £25m. I’d say that evaluation is about right for Sissoko, but if he’s in demand, then Newcastle are within their rights to demand a premium for his services. But 3 times his actual value? I don’t think so. If I were Real Madrid, PSG or Arsenal – I’d be looking to invest my 30 odd million pounds on a more capable player. More fool them if they let his big talk convince them he is some kind of special player – because the stats say otherwise.

  1. Anybody believing these Insigne rumours? In Naples they’re claiming Rafa’s offered him 100,000 euros a week

  2. Sharpy , Aye, obviously he knows better than us, trouble is Rafa must realise the guy has lost the backing of most fans for all his lack of commitment and endless get me out of here interviews. How and can he put him in the squad now?, Some will argue that whilst he is getting wages he has a duty to play but will he give it 100% ? I’m glad I’m not in Rafa’s shoes, it’s a helluva call to make imo, the guy could get booed by his own fans ffs such has he alienated himself from us now.

Kim – I’d play him. I understand the flip side of the argument, but I just think he’s a toon player til he leaves – what if he doesn’t go this window? – he has to face the wraith sometime.
Playing him could put him in the shop window & allow him to showcase to those interested clubs – equally if he spits the dummy and doesn’t play, then he’s going to put those clubs off – he won’t want to do that you’d have thought. So play him before the window closes – let the boo boys have their vent, coz hopefully Sissoko is too bothered about playing well for the move that they won’t effect him.

Georgio – yeah I’ve read we’ve offered him a £4.3m (per year) wage package – that equates to around 82-83k pw. We’ve got rid of some big wages this summer and over the last few seasons – but that’s massive by our usual standards and huge for a EFL club.
That aside though mate, I reckon Napoli will want something like £30m for the lad and I’m not sure we have that kind of money to through around – unless Sissoko goes for £35m that is.

Terry – I’m not saying we should, but the club certainly seem to want to.

  9. What is Sissoko doing that is any worse than Tiote? Tiote actually stayed in the middle east to negotiate his exit and had a meeting in China for the same reason. He is getting a free pass and some fans have turned on Sissoko for running his mouth. I would take 30 million for him in a heartbeat but I doubt we will get an offer like that until nearer the transfer deadline, if at all.

Sharpy, I would keep Janmaat but the rest can leave and I doubt we will get much for them so they really don’t matter. It looks like Krul will leave in January as teams are looking at him to prove his fitness. We have already bought Timmy’s replacement and I would like to see Selz and Elliot compete for the job. I am still not completely sold on Darlow.

  10. Count me as among those concerned about Perez’s progress to date. He seems to come and go in matches. Has he got the drive to truly succeed in the Championship? Still not sure. Rafa won’t be able to wait long for him. Points are vital and getting goals and wins at home will be the top priority. Hope we see Diame against Huddersfield.

  11. Nobody ever mentions the parachute payments. I assume Ashley will use them as operating funds for the club through the season. I think we’ll receive 25M pounds for the first season. If you look at our potential income in the Championship it doesn’t look good which means we had better get top dollar for our remaining players to be sold. The club will likely take a 60 or 70M pound drop in income this season. I can only see about 60 M coming in including the para.

Eric – I think the difference is that Tiote was negotiating with clubs that had bid for him, or that we had allowed him to talk to before a fee was agreed.
Sissoko is mouthing off about Madrid like they are chasing him – well if they were I think we’d know about it. We did when they were after Bale and there is no secret in the pursuit of De Gea – so if Madrid wanted Sissoko, I reckon we’d know.
Sissoko has ran his move about a move away most windows – in fact most international breaks he lets the French media know he wants out. I don’t remember Tiote doing that, but if he has it’s far less frequent than Sissoko.

      (Quote)

  13. G2: the first parachute payment is about 40 million. We will take a hit but a lot of the big earners have left/are leaving. I know that they were making arrangements for a bank overdraft but anything left over from a Sissoko sale will probably see the books almost balanced. Now, if we don’t go back up at the first attempt then we will be screwed.

      (Quote)

  14. Sharpy Correct mate, that’s the big difference, we haven’t heard much if anything from Tiote and he was given permission to talk to interested clubs. Same with Gini and Townsend. It’s the utter disrespect which Sissy has shown to the club and fans. That interview with the French media just hours after we lost to Fulham was totally classless imo and it upset the club too. He is lucky the club didn’t fine him for that.

I think Krul would leave under the right circumstances (not a shirker it’s just time). And we need to move De Jong on. And Riviere. Whatever they make in wages is too much for what they have provided. I’m casting a leery eye at Shelvey as well. Not worth that huge wage so far but we’re stuck with it.

Georgio – he’s back at Chelsea mate. I suggested him the other week coz I agree, he could do a good job on that left wing. I think a double swoop for him & Bamford wouldn’t be bad – on paper Bamford has a good EFL record, but it puzzles me that nobody has snapped him up yet. Many are still concerned about our depth or lack of at striker. I wouldn’t disagree although 1 match isn’t nearly enough to judge it completely. If we get overmatched physically again against Huddersfield I would be very surprised as I think there will be 3 or 4 changes from the starting lineup against Fulham. I just can’t understand the logic in even ‘hoping’ for automatic promotion.
This squad is no where near ready, physically or mentally for the rigours of this season.
The performance against Fulham is where we are right now. We need to see a 1000 times more effort, desire, enterprise and skill, to come anywhere near the play-off spots.
We seem far too lightweight (physically) in the midfield and forward positions. Pushed over and dispossessed way too easily. Very worrying.
No Colback for me today please.
We MUST keep possession of the ball for more than 3 passes before ‘giving’ it away so easily this week. Plus I want to see movement off the ball instead of the game of statues we saw last weekend.
Hoping for the win, obviously, but not convinced it will be as easy as some seem to think.

It could well take the introduction of Mitro in 3 games time before we get any joy up front as we look pretty lightweight up top, or we did last weekend. Diame may well be the difference today if he starts but I feel that’s wishful thinking. Need to be much faster in the attack, we were far too laborious last week which was unnerving considering this has been our problem for a few seasons now and I had hoped we would of got on top of that problem. This league has gotten quicker and the skill levels better since our last time in it and we need to wake up sharpish as a collective if we are to progress.
