Tim Krul has been targeted by Ajax as a replacement for Barcelona-bound Jasper Cillessen, reports the Daily Mail.
The Dutchman is one of five goalkeepers on Newcastle United’s books and with Rafa Benitez keen to trim his squad, the most likely to leave.
In the last year of his contract, Krul is not minded yet to renew. From the club’s point of view, the cruciate knee injury he suffered means they need to be sure he isn’t going to break down again.
The Mail reports that Ajax are struggling to incorporate Krul’s salary of £60,000 per week into their financial structure. It means that a loan deal is more likely for next season, with United subsidising some of his wages.
With Matz Sels performing well at the moment, the Dutchman is by no means certain to regain his first team place when he returns to fitness. At that salary level, he is an expensive substitute.
