Newcastle V Brighton – Championship reaction live!

Welcome one and all to Championship match day. Today marks the second tier return to St. James’ Park of Toon Army favorite Chris Hughton, who many will remember as having lead the Magpies to a memorable Championship League win in 2010. In that season Newcastle remained unbeaten at home in all competition and lost only 4 league games. Under Rafa we have already lost two league games this time around – so it goes to show just how well Hughton did with us and for that he should be given a warm welcome.

That said, I’d like all good sentiment to be put aside come kick off, because he has his Brighton side playing some very good football and they are expected to be rivals at the top end of the table. Former Toon target Anthony Knockheart is on fire for the Seagulls, whereas the Magpies do not have a recognised fit left winger. Dwight Gayle and Aleksander Mitrovic are both out injured, so it is difficult to see where our goals will come from today, albeit Ajoze Perez is fresh off a midweek Cup goal scoring double. Today will be a good measure of where Newcastle United are in terms of squad depth and quality for the rigors that the best this league has to offer. Hughton and Brighton certainly represent that.

Newcastle United:

Toon Brighton

Brighton:

Stockdale, Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Knockaert, Kayal, Sidwell, Skalak; Baldock, Murray.

Subs:

Maenpaa (GK), Hunt, Stephens, Norwood, Murphy, LuaLua, Hemed.

Come On You Toon!!!

  1. Think you’re right Sham. Send Sterry on loan. We have enough at that position now. Actually this is the best shape our squad has been in for this level for many a year. As the season goes on I think we’ll dominate and have a nice cup run or two given the depth Rafa is building.

  2. Such a manager Rafa is. It’s a treat to watch him manage a squad after all the duffers we’ve had.

I agree mate. Always said we would tread water around the Top 6 until the squad clicked and then we would run away with it. I thought we would not click u til October but maybe it is beginning g to happen a bit earlier.

  4. Well chuffed with that performance and a great win. We didn’t really look troubled at all. Was worried without Gayle and Mitro but we did well. Onwards and upwards lads and lasses…

  5. Well after a bit of a shaky opening 10mins, I think we dominated that game and was surprised Brighton offered so little to be honest.

I thought Anita was top notch at RB again, and I personally think that’s his best position.
Shelvey ran the middle – why can’t he do that every week?!?!?!!.
Hayden looks a real classy player I think.
Gouffran had a cracking game today & hopefully maintains that form coz we need competition for the wings.

But our head & shoulders player who has hit the ground running is Ritchie – he’s real quality.

  6. Sharpy yeah I agree with all that. Gouffy did well cutting in centrally and helping out defensively.

Hayden is going to be my own cult hero I think. His work rate is top notch. He always covers way more ground than anybody else on the pitch and he offers real presence in the air.

  8. That is the best performance from Newcastle for some time. Passing was excellent. Well done Rafa. If Sissoko is worth £30 million Diame must be worth £40million. He certainly knows how to press the opposition. What’s more he can pass too. No blind alleys from this bloke. Think he will get better as well.

  9. We played very well today. Controlled the game, looked good going forward, looked solid at the back and looked very comfortable in possession. Have to say we do look like we have that real quality in this division but we also have that battling spirit too. More encouraging was we won comfortably without our two main strikers. I hope that’s the difference this season between us and the rest – our squad.

Shame there’s a break now as we had momentum. Hopefully can carry it on against Derby which is another toughie.
