Ex-Newcastle star says this player is an upgrade to Moussa Sissoko

Olivier Bernard has stated that Newcastle United possess an upgrade to Moussa Sissoko in the form of Mohamed Diame.

Newcastle sold Moussa Sissoko to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee believed to be around £30 million and while the Magpies did receive a lot of money for the French international, they admittedly lost a very good player.

Nonetheless, former Newcastle defender Olivier Bernard does not seem to be too worried by the departure of Sissoko and has stated that the Magpies already possess a quality replacement for the 27-year-old in the form of Mohamed Diame.

Writing in his column for the Chronicle, Bernard explained that Diame is a similar player to Sissoko and added that the Senegalese international may perhaps even be a bit better due to his consistency.

The former full-back wrote, “One acceleration from Sissoko can change a game; but United have replaced like for like too by bringing in Mo Diame because he is a very similar player in that sense and he can be a matchwinner.

“If anything, he’s more consistent as well. Newcastle had to sell Sissoko in my opinion, but they did exactly the right thing by replacing him with Diame.

“That saga is over now – and hopefully we can see the best of Diame throughout the rest of the Championship campaign so he can fill the void in the side left by Sissoko’s departure.”

Diame proved his quality by guiding Hull City to the Premier League last season and Newcastle fans will be hoping that the midfielder will be able to do the same at St. James’ Park as well during the current campaign.
